Red Ribbon Week Exeter-Milligan celebrated Red Ribbon Week Oct The week began with DeMoine Adams talking to the 7-12 graders about good choices. The theme of the week was "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" The 7-12 grade essay winners were Braden Capek, Brianna Capek, Jaiden Papik, and Brock Steuben. Teacher door decorating winners were Anita Mueller, Brooke Soukup, and Melanie Papik. The FCCLA did a great job of explaining Red Ribbon Week to the elementary. They were at both sites doing many Red Ribbon Week activities. Cold Weather Information Please be sure your child comes to school dressed for the cold temperatures. Students should come to school with winter coats, hats, gloves, and boots when it begins to snow. This is very important especially for the elementary students because if the weather permits they will have recess outside. Also make sure your child s items are labeled with their name so they don t get lost. School Closing Info... All notification of weather related late starts or school closing will be announced only at these media sites. Please tune in these stations to receive information updates: -Television Station KLKN in Lincoln -- Channel 8 -Television Station KOLN-KGIN in Lincoln -- Channel 10/11 Announcements are also made through the ADT alert system that is sponsored by Generations Bank in Exeter. After School Practice Just a reminder that in order for 7-12 grade students to be able to practice or participate in any extra curricular activities, the student must be in attendance for ½ day of school. One-half day of school is four (4) full periods. Attendance Policy Notice! The district has an attendance policy which is aimed at reducing critically-high absenteeism. Under normal conditions, the policy limits absences to 10 days per semester, with exceptions for special circumstances. The details of the policy are outlined in the student handbook which each student and parent received in August. Students/Parents When your absences reach over 10 for any period you will need to make up the absences before you will be allowed to participate in any co-curricular activities, which includes practices. After School Program If a student is failing a class(es) they will be REQUIRED to attend the after school program until they are passing all their classes. 2

Student Absences We are again asking that you notify the school by 8:30 AM if your child will be absent or late from school. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, please send a note with your child prior to the absence. This is the most effective way for the school to monitor your child s attendance. If you do not know in advance or if your child is not in school by 8:45 AM we will make an effort to contact you as to the whereabouts of your child. When your child is absent if we do not speak to you personally or if you do not send a note your child will be considered UNEXCUSED. Exeter-Milligan High School was awarded a plaque at the Nebraska Music Educator s Association convention on Friday, November 17, in Lincoln, Nebraska. The plaque reads For excellence in the areas of student involvement, course curricula offerings, and recruitment/retention, the Nebraska Music Education Association proudly recognizes Exeter-Milligan High School for outstanding High School Participation. Exeter-Milligan received level 3 noteworthy recognition for having 58% of the high school participate in band and choir. This is the third year in a row that E-M has earned this award. Pictured above are most of the high school students who participate in music at Exeter-Milligan.

22 High school art students took a trip to the Jackson Dinsdale art Center on November 14. After taking a tour of the facility we sat in on a visiting artist demonstration in their state of the art glass blowing studio. This is one of the largest and best studios in the world. The students learned quickly that patience, time and hard work goes into this art form to get results. We were not even able to stay long enough to see the results. The afternoon was spent listening to a printmaking demonstration. Thanks to Hastings College for arranging this visit for us. You can see what the students have been working on if you view our artsonia site or visit the hallways of the activity entrance or the high school library. We will also have art on display during the Winter Concerts.

December NEWS Leave your mark! And that they did! And boy was it magical! It's so much easier for me to put thoughts into words when I'm writing poems or revamping songs or Christmas stories, but when it comes to completely pouring your heart and soul into how you feel about a group of girls and coaching partners.putting pen to paper just doesn't seem to do it justice! Wow! Talk about all the years in which to tell your story! It's only December and I couldn't even begin to have written a better script! Last spring..march to be exact..i remember finishing up at an emotional school board meeting where visiting towns had come to vie for our partnership in volleyball. Both districts were extremely interested in co-oping so as to make their programs stronger. All I could think about was the meeting with our EM girls a few days before that and how they expressed their desire to continue on as Exeter-Milligan. I was so proud to be a part of such a strong tradition and even more proud to see those girls wanting to fight for a program they knew full well was not built overnight. I remember leaving that school board meeting, standing outside the community classroom and looking at Coach White eye to eye.well, sort of.and her saying, Ok, here we go, this better work. I remember my reply being, Just wait. People will poop themselves (pardon the expression) when we win state with just seven girls on the team! Well, we started and ended the season with ten, and yes, it worked! This team won state! They left their mark! And boy was it magical! You would think that would be a good way to end this letter, but I have more to say about this group! So please bear with me and keep reading! After the game was over. After the infamous Kate Jansky block, It was almost like there was some kind of lapse.lapse in memory.lapse in presence..lapse in time.lapse in something. I remember standing on the baseline of the court waiting to be announced as the D2 state champs and thinking we just swept the top seeded team. A team with a 29 and 1 record. A team that deserved to be in that championship game. A team that we watched kick butt the day before. A team that really did not suck (pardon the expression). We just swept them. I remember thinking to myself what the heck just happened. Then Darcy looked at me eye to eye..well, sort of.and asked, What the heck just happened? All I remember saying is, We won! and it was magical!

Next came the TV interviews. I was lucky enough to be present in the room to hear Coach White, Tara, and KK being interviewed. I could feel the magnitude of the entire year welling up inside me. I began to replay everything from the school board meeting in March, to the conditioning sessions in June and July, to the beginning practices in August and now to this final game. Tara was asked a question, and I m not even sure what the question was. I just remember her response. She said, choking back her tears, We ended last school year not even knowing if were were going to have enough girls to have a team and here we are state champs. Insert full fledge bawling emojis here, because that was me! It s unfortunate that there was not time for each one of the girls to be interviewed. Each of these ten young ladies played an extremely valuable role on this team! Without each one of them, the team would not have been nearly as successful. Rewind just a bit to the end of September, when this team left their mark in Johnson County.literally. and they decided after the JCC tournament that the remainder of the season was all about leaving their mark. Having only lost one game after that tournament, I d say they definitely did just that. And what better place to leave your final mark of the season than at the Bob!! And it was magical! I can t end this newsletter without acknowledging Coach Smith, who has been a real hoot to coach with, and to truly and genuinely thank Coach White. I could not ask for a better friend, mentor and coaching partner through the years than Darcy! I feel completely honored to have been a part of the culture in which she has created at our great school. I cannot walk into the gym and look up at the banners that hang there without remembering each year and every player that helped form the traditions that continue on at EM! It really is magical! Coach Kroll

VIEW FROM THE FRONT OFFICE What do you see in the figure above? Take a moment to describe what you see? What do you notice first? The rectangle? The white space within the rectangle? The black circle? Most people will notice the black circle first. Keep this thought in mind as it will come in handy later on in the article. WOW! That s the only way to explain the recent volleyball championship play by the Lady Timberwolves. It is still so surreal the team won the D2 State Championship, the fifth championship in the past nine years. They ALL stepped up to the challenge this past year and played the most exciting championship match. I tip my hat not only to the players, but also to head coach Darcy White and assistants Laura Kroll and Katherine Smith. This group worked together and epitomized what it means to work as a team. Congratulations ladies and thanks for letting this guy tag along on such a wonderful journey! It s hard to believe Thanksgiving is here and Christmas is just around the corner. Seems like we were just taking Haylee to college at Ft. Hays and now we are planning our Christmas trip to visit Karla s family in Arizona. It has been an interesting adjustment to an empty nest, but honestly, much easier than I thought it would be. Having the daily contact with the school students has definitely helped my transition.

Let s turn our focus back to the figure. What did you notice first and focus on? Most people will have noticed and focused on the little black circle. But did anyone notice what is around that black circle? Did anyone notice all the white space? In life, as in the figure above, we have the tendency to focus on the negative more than the positive. We tend to find the black instead of the white. As you look at the figure and notice the black (the negative) look at how much we are missing. Look at all the positive we are missing (the white area) simply because we are focusing on the little black circle (the negative). Think about the positives in life, the good in people, the strengths that we have. Think about the good we could do if we focused more on the positives, the strengths in others, the white space. It is time to focus our attention and be thankful for what we have, to celebrate our positives, our successes. As the holiday season begins, we each need to celebrate the blessings each of us has been given. Are we happy with what we have? Are we grateful for the blessings we have been given? Or are we wishing our lives away, wishing we had more money, more things, more time? Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for what we have. Much too often we look at what others have and wish we had that too. We probably need to do just the opposite. We should celebrate what we DO have! If we spend our time always looking somewhere else and wishing we had what they have, we never truly see what we have ourselves. We never celebrate our uniqueness, our own accomplishments, our own treasures. Focusing our attention on the positives keeps us moving in a positive direction. We have a broader vision of what is possible and can focus on each other s strengths. This helps us all to move in the same positive direction one that will help all involved. Celebrating life s little successes along the way is something we should cherish. Take time this holiday season to focus on that white space the positives. Take a chance and shine a light on what is right. Make it a point to give unexpectedly a random act of kindness. After all, isn t that what the holiday season is for? Thought for the month: A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but also the parent of all other virtues. Cicero
