Also make sure your child s items are labeled with their name so they don t get lost. Thank You The Boosters would like to thank everyone who donated cookies for the Christmas Teas and a special thanks to those who worked during this busy time of year. If you feel that your child may qualify under any of the above categories please contact Paul Sheffield Superintendent, Exeter-Milligan Public School District #01, Exeter, NE First Grade News Miss Lincoln First Graders learned about Outer Space and the Planets in Science. They created their own constellations with toilet paper rolls and black paper. After constellations they learned about moon phases. For a month the students looked at the moon each night and colored it in. They each saw the 8 different moon phases we have each month. After moon phases, First Graders learned about planets. They mapped out the distance each planet is from the sun with toilet paper squares. They truly enjoyed this activity. To see the pictures please visit my website or check out #emwolves on Twitter. Second Grade News - Mrs. Weber Grade 2 students have been busy learning about weather during science time. Students have studied the different types of clouds and charted what clouds they saw each day. Using this information, they predicted what the weather might be like on the next day. Second grade excitedly welcomed Miss Scott, our student teacher from Peru State College, to join us this quarter at EM. Miss Scott is a native of Geneva, Nebraska. 6th Grade News Mr. Ceverny It s hard to believe that the first semester of school is already over! We have had a lot of fun in the sixth grade classroom these past few months. It has been very cool to see each student s unique interests and personalities. I have been very impressed with how hard these students have worked and I hope this only continues to improve as the year goes on. During the second semester we will be learning a lot of new material as well as working on becoming more independent and responsible. This will be crucial as these students will soon be entering junior high in the near future. I hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday! JUNIOR PARENTS There will be a Post Prom meeting on January 17 between the Girls and Boys Varsity games, so about 7:30pm. This meeting will be held in the Community Classroom. 2

3 4 th Grade News- Mrs. Mueller We have been learning about the pioneers moving across the Nebraska and traveling on the Oregon Trail. Nebraska has not become a state yet, but we are close. We measured out how big a covered wagon would have been and talked about the popularity of beaver pelts in Europe while I wore my coonskin hat. The 3rd and 4th graders enjoyed watching Kimberly Doubek from The Durham Museum via livestream and learning about different Holiday traditions. Interesting fact, we learned that in German they hide a pickle in the tree, and whoever finds the pickle gets an extra gift. 4 The Bill of Rights and You On December 19 the Milligan Public Library will host a new pop-up exhibition from thenational Archives, The Bill of Rights and You, commemorating the 225th anniversary of the ratification of this landmark document. The Bill of Rights and You spotlights one of the most remarkable periods in American history, explores the origins of the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution (collectively known as the Bill of Rights), illustrates how each amendment protects U.S. citizens, and looks at how Americans exercise the rights outlined in the amendments. The Bill of Rights and You invites visitors to connect directly with the people, places, and events that mark this historic document s evolution. This exhibit runs through February 28, The Bill of Rights and You co-curator Jennifer Johnson states: "The Bill of Rights represents the Founder's vision that it would be the people, through votes, that could change the Constitution with enough consensus. And when the people desired a Bill of Rights, our first ten amendments were added to our governing charter." We invite all organizations and school groups to come view this exhibit. This can be during the library s open hours that are Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 and Saturday from9:30 to 11:30 or you may schedule a time for your convenience by calling Shirley Brunkow at or the Milligan Library at during their open hours. Any group wishing to schedule a program based on the Bill of Rights may schedule a time and do so at the library. The Bill of Rights and You is organized by the National Archives and Records Administration, and traveled by the National Archives Traveling Exhibits Service (NATES). This exhibition was developed in collaboration with the National Archives National Outreach Initiative to commemorate the 225 th Anniversary of the Bill of Rights. The exhibition is presented in part by AT&T, Seedlings Foundation, and the National Archives Foundation. This exhibit is brought to you in collaboration with the Nebraska Humanities and the Federation of State Humanities Councils. Exeter-Milligan Basketball Ready To Begin Season By Hailey Luzum November 29, 2016 The boys and girls Exeter- Milligan basketball teams will play their first game of the season on Thursday, December 1st at Deshler High School. The Dragons and the Timberwolves will battle it out to see who will bring home their first win that night. The two teams met the same way last year. The Lady Timberwolves took down the The Exeter-Milligan girl s basketball team.

7 dragons last year, but the Exeter-Milligan boy s team fell to the dragons in a tight game. The two matches will be good ones to watch, considering how they went last year. First EM basketball game to be played on Thursday By Trystan Brandt December 1st marks the first game of the season for the EM basketball teams. They will be opening the season on the road in Deshler. The games will start at 6:15 with the girls Varsity followed by the boys Varsity at 8:00. E-M only lost two seniors last year. E-M will have three seniors this year. The E-M team this year will have good experience due to a good number of juniors and seniors. Be sure to check out the action in Deshler Thursday night!

Following the introduction, the boy scouts brought the flags in, and started the pledge of Allegiance. Right after, the senior high girls, sang the star spangle banner. The Exeter-Milligan School, had a guest speaker come and talk about veterans day, and the meaning behind it. After the guest speaker the junior high choir sang a song, afterwards, the senior high choir joined the junior high choir and they all sang a song together. Following the choir, came the 7-12 band, which played two wonderful pieces. Samantha Horne gave the closing speech and thanked everyone for his or her time and safe travels home.

9 Nebraska Family Alliance - Human Trafficking By: Haylee Sheffield On Tuesday, November 22nd, a representative of Nebraska Family Alliance gave a speech and presentation on Human Trafficking to the students, teachers, and parents at Exeter-Milligan High Public Schools. The representative gave a presentation and speech informing all the attendees of how common human trafficking is. We might not realize how common this issue is and how close we are to it. Human Trafficking is the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. Human Trafficking is one of the many things that Nebraska Family Alliance helps people with. The presentation has helped the students, teachers, and parents better understand what human trafficking is and how close to home it might be. Dazzling Christmas Concert By Samantha Horne Get ready to hear the most amazing music at the Exeter-Milligan Junior High and High School Christmas Concert. The band will play and the choir will sing. They will perform on Monday December 19 at the Exeter High School gym. The Junior High and High School band will be playing Sleigh Ride, Cantique de Noel, and Christmas Sing-a-Long. They have been working on Christmas music since early November.

10 VIEW FROM THE FRONT OFFICE It s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go Hard to believe it is that time of the year already. It s also the time of year to look back and give thanks for what we have and to lend a helping hand to those who are not as fortunate as we. During this time of the year, we all need to step back and take a look at our lives. Are we happy with what we have? Are we grateful for the blessings we have been given? Or are we wishing our lives away, wishing we had more money, more things, more time? Much too often we look at what others have and wish we had that too. We probably need to do just the opposite. We should celebrate what we DO have! If we spend our time always looking somewhere else and wishing we had what they have, we never truly see what we have ourselves. We never celebrate our uniqueness, our own accomplishments, our own treasures. The grass always looks greener on the other side, but once you get there, it s usually no different (or at times even worse) than what you already had. Many of you may be aware, but we are looking into our options for volleyball for the 2017 season. It is very possible we will have only eight (8) volleyball players. Each of the options we have discussed has pros and cons. Outlined below are the options being considered: Option 1 Stay on our own and take a chance with no injuries, etc Pro s everyone would have the opportunity to play, still be in Crossroads Conference, maintain our own program Con s 1 or 2 injuries away from a rough season, difficult to practice/emulate game situations, younger players possibly put into a situation not ready for Option 2 Co-op with a Friend Pro s possible to field a full team including a JV and varsity Con s playing time for E-M students not guaranteed, not guaranteed to be in the Crossroads Conference, working out co-op specifics (practice, games, colors, etc), may have less participate due to the co-op

11 Option 3 Co-op with Fillmore Central Pro s field a full team (JV and Varsity), already have a working relationship due to softball co-op Con s playing time for E-M students not guaranteed, will not be in the Crossroads Conference, working out co-op specifics (practice, games, colors, etc), may have less participate due to the co-op This will be discussed (with a possible decision) at the January school board meeting. We value input, so please feel free to contact a board member or myself about which option you believe would be the best for our students. We always need to keep our options open for other opportunities that may come our way our dance card is always open. The focus needs to be on the success of the students and the opportunities that can be provided. The common goal must be to provide the best opportunities for the students of Exeter-Milligan. Sometimes, those opportunities may not be readily available here. Change is never easy. Having a routine and keeping things the status quo is safe we know what to expect. On the other hand, could there be something that we miss when we don t venture out? My inspiration for this article has been my in-laws. Ten years ago this past week, they made a huge change in their lives and stepped out of their comfort zone they moved from Minnesota to Arizona. They had lived in the same community for over 45 years (and in only two houses during that time). Leaving what they had always known was a HUGE step for them. Not once in ten years have they ever regretted this decision. If they could take this giant leap, can t we all take a small one? Take a little time this holiday season to celebrate the blessings each of us has been given. Celebrating life s little successes along the way is something we should cherish. If we go through life wishing all the time, how will we ever know if our wishes came true? Just a little food for thought have a safe and happy holiday season. ENJOY!
