EXETER-MILLIGAN STUDENTS SHARE THEIR ARTWORK WITH THE WORLD! Tyler Hinton, the school's Art Teacher, has teamed up with Artsonia, -- the world's largest online kid's art museum -- to display the students' artwork. Anyone can view the school gallery online at: Visitors can browse the artwork in the school gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits. Exeter-Milligan students join thousands of students from over 130 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia. "This program is a wonderful way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Education," said Tyler Hinton. All of Artsonia's artwork (20 million and counting!) are viewable online, and any teacher or parent can create an online art gallery for their child or school. Artsonia provides several online features such as fan clubs and personal guestbooks, as a way for families to encourage the creativity and imaginations of their young artists. In addition, family members can purchase keepsakes imprinted with the child's artwork, with Artsonia donating 20 percent of their annual product revenue back to school art programs. Headquartered in Gurnee, Ill., Artsonia was established in 2000 as an online kid's art museum providing free, educational resources for kids, families and schools to create art projects. Since its inception, Artsonia continues to integrate technology in the classroom, develop multi-cultural understanding through art and increase family involvement in children's education. To find out more, visit E-M BOOSTERS ANNUAL BASKET RAFFLE The Booster annual basket raffle will be held again this year during the basketball season. 5 On Thursday, September 5, the Freshman Class attended a day-long Respect Retreat at Milford High School. This ESU6 sponsored program was designed to help the students respect themselves and others. It also encouraged them to be aware of bullying and other disrespectful behavior they see at school, and to stand up for those who are being targeted. Shared below, are some of the responses received in our post-retreat survey. All of the survey responses will be posted on the School website under Mrs. Wahl s site link. Bailey: My favorite part was playing the game where you had to pull someone up on the opposite side of the room and of the different gender. The message that stuck to me the most is respect others and stand up for them. You don t know what they re going through or how bad they feel. As a class we need to work on not judging each other. Being nicer and standing up for other people. Joan: My favorite part was listening to Debra G sing. The message that stuck with me is even though you are on the top you still have to follow the rules. We should work on as a class the picking on and name calling. Sydney: My favorite part was when we had to run across the floor and pull somebody up from the opposite gender. The message that stuck in my head was when you re on top you still have to be nice and follow the rules. We should work on not calling people names and be nice to everybody even if you don t like them. Trevor: My favorite part of the Respect Retreat was the fun games we played, especially the one where we ran across and grabbed someone of opposite sex. The message that sticks with me is treat others the way you want to be treated. Our class should try to work on respecting the teacher better. Evan Harre: My favorite part of the retreat was when we had to grab the hand of somebody across the ring and take their place. Then they had to run and find someone else. Something that sticks with me is to respect people. Our class should work on being nicer to people. Trystan: My favorite part of the retreat was the game where we had to run to the other side and grab a person and take their place. The message that stuck with me most is to not let things get to you. The thing we should work on as a class is being more respectful to all of our teachers. 5

The exhibit will be available daily from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM and also from 6:00-7:00 PM Monday thru Thursday. The public is encouraged to attend. If these times do not work for you call the school and talk to Mr. Sheffield or Mr. Schlueter. VIEW FROM THE FRONT OFFICE Have you ever wondered why certain ideas and concepts tend to stick? Why do some tend to thrive while others die? How do we improve the chances of worthy ideas? Letʼs take a short little quiz to demonstrate this concept of stickiness. Below are some commercial jingles and/or one-liners what product is being advertised? A little dabʼll do ya, How do you spell relief?, Like a good neighbor, _?_, Ancient Chinese secret, huh?, Mr. Whipple, please donʼt squeeze the _?_!, Silly rabbit, _?_ are for kids., Plop, plop, fizz, fizz oh what a relief it is., Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you donʼt, He likes it, hey Mikey!, This is a good place for a _?_. How well did these phrases stick? The answers to the quiz will come a little later in the article. As you read through the 10 phrases, did you find yourself singing the tune, seeing the commercial, remembering the sights and sounds? What makes these so special that we remember them and what they advertise even though we havenʼt seen nor heard them in such a long time? What made these stick? This idea of stickiness is explored in the book, Made to Stick, by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. The authors describe six key principals as to why some ideas win and also explain how we can apply these rules to make our own messages stick. As teachers and parents, this is exactly what we try to do everyday. The first concept pertaining to stickiness is simplicity - the more simple and profound, the better. This goes along with the KISS method not the band KISS but rather Keep It Simple Stupid. If a concept can be condensed to one little phrase, we have a better chance of remembering it. The USA Today newspaper was based on this premise keep the articles short, sweet, and to the point and provide charts, graphs and easy to read statistics. Another concept of stickiness is unexpectedness. What better way to generate curiosity and interest than making it something totally unexpected and a surprise. This will help generate the interest and also help hold ones attention. This can also be described as the shock value. The Velcro theory of learning helps describe another concept, concreteness. The more hooks in the idea, the better. This will help people understand the concept, but also help make it tangible and real. It brings the idea home and also makes it something we can sink our teeth into. 8

9 As we watch commercials, do we tend to believe the people we are famliar with or some unknown actor? In most cases, we are going to trust the person we know this lends to their credibility. We want to believe that person is the authority and will trust what they say or do. This also harkens to those late night infomercials. Usually, the pitchman has the credibility for us to believe the product will work. Appealing to someoneʼs emotional side is another step to stickiness. Making people care utilizes the power of association. Think about the commercials such as Save a Child and animal shelters they all play on our emotions and push us to step up to the cause. By appealing to our emotions, it creates self-interest and also appeals to our identity. It helps drive the point home by appealing to our human side. The last, but definitely not least, is using stories. We communicate with each other by telling stories to get our point across. Stories simulate the situation and help us gauge how we should act in a certain situation. We are, in essence, role-playing. We go through the motions, acting it out, in hopes that if a person is ever in a certain situation, they will know what to do because they have done it before (practiced). Another way to think about the use of stories is how parables are used. We all remember certain stories The Good Samaritan and Daniel and the Lionʼs Den for example. We remember these stories and the moral behind them. If we were just told to be nice to strangers, would that get the message across as well as telling the story of the Good Samaritan? Stories help us see the action, personalize the situation, and draw our own conclusions. Making our ideas stick follows a process. The ones that stick tend to follow the six concepts of stickiness simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional and stories. Using these six concepts just might help the next time we want our ideas, thoughts, or actions to have a lasting effect. Maybe, just maybe, when we least expect it someone will say, Wow, I should have had a _?_ OK, now for the quiz answers. There were so many more phrases I wanted to use, but I ran out of room (and time - Jackie was getting a little impatient with me since I was late with my article). #1 Brylcream (this dates me, but itʼs a good one), #2 ROLAIDS, #3 State Farm, #4 Calgon, #5 Charmin, #6 Trix, #7 Alka Seltzer, #8 Almond Joy and Mounds, #9 Life Cereal, and #10 Stick-ups deodorizer. Thought for the month Ze plane! Ze plane! Smiles, everyone smiles. My dear guests, I am Mr. Roarke, your host. Welcome to _?_! 9
