Many of us have been vacationing with friends and family. Brenda and I just returned from a vacation to the Riviera* with our children and grandchildren. We had a great time but are glad to be home. The next six weeks will be busy for all us shaggers. Meet Me In The Middle is next weekend, end of summer Pig Pickin at the end of the month, then the pre-sos party and SOS are right on its heels. Don t forget to tune up your shaggin shoes. Safety should always be first. The last Junior Shag workshop of the summer will be held at the Phoenix on August 13 th from 6:30 to 7:30. Juniors are welcome to dance and practice until 9:00. Our DJ will start at 7:30 that evening. Thanks to Greta and the Phoenix. Come out and bring the kids. Jeff and Dede, Steve and Jill, Danny and Susan and Rick and Eleanor served as instructors for the beginning dancers who competed at the Shaggin on Augusta event on July 30 th. CSC members also helped in the planning of the event and CSC was listed as one of the sponsors. Thanks to all of you for being ambassadors to the community for our club. Our major event of the year, Meet Me In The Middle, is coming up the first weekend in August. Steve says single day tickets will be sold at the door. 7 Junior Shaggers Take the Floor Again at RunWay Café Hot weather moves dancing indoors for lessons and practice. Approximately 25 young shaggers, parents and relatives came to Greenville from all across the region on Saturday afternoon, July 9 th to learn intermediate shag steps, practice their lessons and take time to socialize with their friends. Perennial music favorites, Bob (Beach Bob) Ross and Kathy Cole played their selection of beach music. A series of shag steps were taught by Jeff and Dede Ward. Beach Bob and Kathy helping out with the music selection as students and adults practiced the lessons. The session lasted approximately one hour. After practice, numerous attendees stayed over at the RunWay Café s dining area to enjoy food and drinks, stay out of the heat and listen to Beach Bob and Kathy s music. Junior Shaggers have gathered here since May 2016 for these sessions. The next series for the juniors is planned for next spring. More details will be forthcoming. Dot received the honor of being inducted into the National Living Legends of Dance to be held November 11th & 12th in Virginia Beach. The National Living Legends of Dance was founded in Virginia for the purpose of giving recognition to all styles of dance across the United States. These inductees are nominated by an advisory board that considered their contribution and influence in their particular dance style. Inductees come from across the United States. Dances include the progeny of Lindy Hop, including West Coast Swing, Texas Push and Whip, Carolina Shag, D.C. Hand Dance, and Florida Beach Bop. Dot said she was completely surprised by being selected to be honored as a Living Legend of Dance. I ve been doing this for 29 years but I had no idea I d be selected to receive this honor. Each nominee should be at least 55 years of age, but this may be waived at the discretion of the Board. All of those proposed will be reviewed and voted on by the Board of Directors. 8
9 Beachin Finale in Mauldin Mauldin, S.C. Mauldin s Beachin Friday s Beachin Finale event kicked off with a bang Saturday evening, July 2nd as attendees enjoyed music, food, and of course, fireworks at the Mauldin Cultural Center. The Beachin Fridays summer concert series began on Friday, June 3 and became a huge success. On June 3 rd, officials estimated that over 300 people danced the night away at the first concert featuring Carolina Coast Band. The events, hosted each Friday night by Beach Bob Ross and Kathy Cole, also featured free shag lessons for everyone during the band s set break. Beachin Fridays were the only known beach music summer concert series in the Upstate. Beachin Fridays features live beach music every Friday night in June with music starting at 7:00 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheater. Concerts were free to attend. Beach Bob Ross (left) and Jeff Ward show off their patriotic pants at Beachin Finale. Photo by Skip Watkins Numerous Carolina Shag Club members attended the Friday night series to enjoy the food, drink and entertainment. Additionally, free beginner shag lessons were taught by club members Jeff and Dede Ward. It was estimated that lesson participants ranged from 30 to 60 persons each Friday night. Before the Beachin Finale began, Mauldin s mayor Dennis Raines addressed the crowd. He praised all of the city staff and performers for their efforts and said "Next year we plan to make it an even bigger event," A dazzling display of pyrotechnics began after dark, much to the delight of onlookers. "Oohs" and "Aahs" could be heard from adults and children alike as they took in the bright colors of the fireworks.
