1 The Talon April 21, 2017 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 56, Number 8 Rondal Hughes More than a Superintendent Rondal Hughes was more than just the superintendent at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools. He was a friend to the students, teachers, and staff members. He was also the biggest fan of the Eagles. In my time working at BF-DC I personally saw Mr. Hughes help gravel the parking lot, cook burgers at a football game, mow the school lawn, and help the people around him in hundreds of different ways. He will be missed by each and every person that he called friend and family. Ron was born on November 13, 1965, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, to Richard and Bonnie Sue (Rutledge) Hughes and passed from this earth on Sunday, April 2, 2017, after a hard fought battle against cancer. He was always a fighter and very stubborn. He never gave up on a team when he played or coached ball, and he fought cancer until the very day that it took him from all of us. Ron was raised in Alex, Oklahoma, where he attended Alex Public Schools. He was a mighty Longhorn and played football, basketball, and baseball (basically all of the sports offered by the school). He was also the team captain for each of those sports. He loved to play ball, any kind of ball. I played catch with him many times in the vacant lot between our homes. He was an All-District Quarterback and Eight Man All Star his senior year. His basketball team went 19 and 9 his senior year and made it to the Area Tournament. He also was the football escort his junior year. Ron was voted the Most Likely to Succeed his senior class and was a Who s Who Among American High School Students. He was active in Future Homemakers of America, was the sophomore class student council representative, and his junior class president. He attended the First Baptist Church on Main Street, and I will always cherish the memories of riding the church bus with Ron and his younger brother Ricky, while his dad Richard drove. Ron graduated from high school in 1984 (I have that year on great authority from Mrs. Hileman who graduated the same year from a different school). He started college the following fall at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) in Chickasha and went from being called Rondal to Ron. He majored in Health, Physical Education and Recreation with a minor in history. He was the coordinator of the intramural program for two years and on the winning softball intramural team Lawson Hall Wolf Dogs. (The Trend, August 3, 1988) Ron graduated from USAO with his bachelors in August of Ron became Coach Hughes and started teaching and coaching at Chickasha Public Schools. He moved from Chickasha to Merritt Public Schools. While coaching in Merritt, he luckily coached the brother of Kandii Sanders. A year after Kandii graduated from high school, she was sent to pick up her brother Chris from football. She honked her horn to signal her arrival. The new to Merritt Schools Coach Hughes, didn t approve, but Kandii didn t back down and honked the next time too. When the two, Coach Hughes and sister of the player, Kandii finally met they laughed about the horn honking and immediately hit it off. Ron the budget friendly guy took her on their first date to Sonic for a cheeseburger, on his lunch period. Three months later on Ron s spring break they were married. They celebrated twenty-five years together March 7, 2017 at the hospital in OKC. They moved from Merritt Schools to Sperry Schools for one year. Kandii found out she was pregnant and the young couple s first daughter Jordan was born. They then all moved back home to be closer to family. Ron returned to Merritt Schools and continued to coach. He also worked at Elk City Public Schools, attended SWOSU where he received a Masters in Education Administration, and had daughter number two, Lorsa. He came to Burns Flat-Dill City Schools and became Principal Hughes. During this time Ron was officiating basketball games. Several coaches have spoken about what a great job Ron did as an official and about how he was always about the players and what was best for the players. Kandii, Ron, and the girls stayed busy camping and spending time at the lake. He loved the outdoors and loved nothing more than taking his youngest daughter Lorsa hunting and fishing whenever he could. Ron continued to coach but now he was coaching his oldest daughter Jordan in her various sporting endeavors. He also loved helping Jordan and Lorsa with their History Day projects and traveling with his girls, Mrs. Lyles, Mrs. Ledbetter, and the other students to the National History Day in Washington D.C. He moved from the principal s office to the superintendent s office becoming Superintendent Ron Hughes. He officially retired this year after thirty years in education. His job as a superintendent was just another way he could support the school, the kids, and the community. He was never just a superintendent; he always helped out in so many other ways; from cooking at the games to building History Day display boards. Ron Hughes, the man was always about supporting the kids in whatever they needed to be successful. Ron was a member of the Sayre First Baptist Church and had also been attending the Burns Flat First Baptist Church. He was a member and served on the appeals board of the OSSAA and also was a member of the Southwest School Officials, OSSBA, Carol Maynard Scholarship Board, Carla Black Scholarship Board, Burns Flat-Dill City Education Foundation, and the cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administrators He is survived by his wife Kandii, two daughters, Jordan and Lorsa; his father Richard Hughes and his wife Betty; brother Rick Hughes and his wife Melea; halfsister Jan McKinney; mother -in-law Gail Skipworth and husband J.W.; brother-in-law Chris Sanders wife Amy; and sister--in-law Jennifer Cleveland and husband Jason. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Hunter, Rylee, Mavrick, Kristen, Allison, Jadyn, and Cooper as well as numerous other family members and friends. Ron s wife Kandii and his daughters Jordan and Lorsa wanted to express their eternal gratitude for all the community support and love that has been shown to them. Kandii also wanted everyone to know that the BF-DC Education Foundation has put in place a memorial scholarship in Ron s name. Anyone that would like to honor Ron may do so by making a donation to the scholarship. The first scholarship will be given to a senior graduating this school year. Whenever one of us, the teacher or staff member, would go to Mr. Hughes with a problem he was always there for us. Lonnie Boone told me about how Mr. Hughes and the office staff Sherry and Beverly prayed for her when they feared she might have cancer. Other teachers told similar stories. The teachers and staff also prayed for Mr. Hughes every morning holding hands and praying for what was best for Ron. Everyone that knew him knew that he was a Christian and that when he left this earth he would be going to a better place but like Mr. McCown shared at Ron s Memorial Services, Ron may be better off but we are not. We all miss him every day, every moment. It will be a long time before I will be able to adjust to the fact that he will not walk through my library door again and that he won t be teasing me about being tougher than him playing football. Good bye good friend, you will be missed for a long time to come. 3 April 21, 2017 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 56 Number 8 Page 3 March Star Students Students Make Wildflower Seed Bombs The Will Rogers elementary students celebrated Earth Day Thursday, April 20th. Earth Day is actually April 22, but the little Eagles got a head start! Earlier in the week, the entire student population made wildflower seed bombs to be used to create a wildflower sanctuary. The walking track west of the elementary school needed a little sprucing up. After a dedication ceremony, the students threw their wildflower seed bombs on the center of the walking track. Wildflowers will beautify as well as bring in butterflies and honey bees. Honey bees help pollinate many various plants and trees and have been declining in number. The wildflowers will be very beneficial to bees in the honey-making process. Pumpkin seeds will be planted at a later date. In honor of Superintendent Mr. Ron Hughes, who passed away recently, the classes planted trees adorned with purple ribbons representing esophageal and pancreatic cancers. Early childhood classes planted an apple in their playground area, and each grade planted either an apple, peach, or dogwood at the walking track. Students enjoyed an Earth Day Celebration in the gym with videos about our planet's exquisite wildlife and recycling along with activities in their classrooms. Afterwards, older students joined in a schoolwide community/town-wide trash clean-up. During the day, students had an opportunity to play on two blowup toys set up in the gym. A "Garden Grant" donated by the Pattersons, former educators, was used to purchase the fruit trees and pumpkin seeds. Other vegetable seeds to be planted in the fall were also purchased through this grant. March Star Students at Will Rogers Elementary were honored Monday, April 3 at Eagle Time. To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every digit from 1 to 9 must appear in each of the nine vertical columns, in each of the nine boxes. Book Review With the recent coming out of the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, I believe a review of the book itself is in order. The book sounds more like a conversation between a main character Hannah Baker, a recently deceased teen who left cassette tapes to inform the people she left behind the reasons she s no longer with them, and teen Clay Jensen. The book is mostly from the perspective of Clay but is about the life of Hannah. On these cassette tapes Hannah has left behind are the 13 reasons why she decided to commit suicide, Clay Jensen being one of them along with many others, her friends, her enemies, even a teacher. I believe this book is very compelling and a hard book to put down. Although some people believe that this book is a hard book to enjoy, which I can understand, but I think this book has captured a certain feeling. I feel a lot of people believe Hannah s suicide was selfish and that she wasn t realistically suicidal because people look for clear cut reasons. I think this book shows that each weight can be a little more crushing. I think this book shows the importance of taking responsibility for your actions. I would give the book 5 out of 5 stars. Mikaela Porterfield BF-DC Student Movie Review Logan is a movie that is apart of the X-Men franchise and depicts the Wolverine as an old man that is slowly dying from the metal that is coated on his bones. Everything changes perspective whenever a young girl appears and turns out to be his daughter with the same special abilities as his. Now he must take her and the rest of the children that are the last of the mutants to a safe haven and attempt to preserve the mutant genes in which they hold. This movie is a tear jerker and very emotional. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. Max Blankenship Yearbook On Sale NOW! Counselor Corner The state test will continue until April 28 th.
