1 PRESIDENT S CORNER Fay Burgeson, President, Unit 2 Homeowners Association (On behalf of your Homeowners Board) Happy New Year! A brand, new year,.time to restart that project, assess our lives, count our blessings, re-dedicate ourselves to the important things in life. WOW! That can be a huge list. Yes, I need to drop a few pounds, balance my checkbook, and get more exercise. Sometimes it can be exhausting just thinking about it. Not that I am an expert, but I ve been told to take one thing at a time. So, that s what I will try to do. Hope it works this time. We ve had a great year here in Unit 2. We replaced one of the air-conditioners in the clubhouse and put in a new heat pump at the pool which not only heats the pool, but cools it in the summer! We hired new people to care for our grass and they are doing a great job. If you haven t noticed, we have a large sink in the back of the clubhouse just outside the kitchen door. Now, it won t be such a chore to wash some of those huge pots and pans that are used in our dinner events. For the future, we have some new club officers with new ideas and new energy, a list of items for consideration to improve our lives and expect to get our sidewalks and gutters repaired in the very near future. As always, we need your help. Think about volunteering this next year if you haven t done so in the past. Thank you for your support this past year and in the next! Best Wishes as we begin 2017 together! MEN S CLUB PANCAKE BREAKFAST SATURDAY JANUARY 7 th Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday, January 7 th. Plain & Blueberry Pancakes from 8:00-10:00 a.m. for a $ 3.50 donation. MEN S CLUB MEETING is on Tuesday, January 3 rd dinner at 6:00 p.m. with meeting to follow. CHINESE NEW YEAR S DINNER SATURDAY JANUARY 28 th The Social Club will hold a Chinese Dinner to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Saturday, January 28 th at 5:00 p.m. Every Chinese New Year starts a new animal's zodiac year is the year of the Rooster. (Chinese zodiac years: A very old custom is to name the years by one of 12 animals in their zodiac cycle.) This year s event will be catered by Zom Hee Chinese Restaurant. Sandi Stamper will chair the event and will be looking for volunteers to assist with making the evening a success. The cost of the dinner will be $10.00 per person - tickets are available from Sandi at (727) NOTE: The Calendar of Events for all of the Mainlands Units is now available on channel 732 if you have a digital ready TV you would tune in to station 98.1 See all of the Mainlands Units newsletters online at: 1

2 GOLF CART PARADE A SUCCESS Charlie Hemeon Chairman Charlie Hemeon, Chairman, presented the 1 st place trophy to Sally Kruse On Sunday December 11 th Unit 2 once again held its annual Golf Cart Parade. We had 25 decorated golf carts that paraded around Mainlands Blvd. and despite a light rain everyone seemed to enjoy the parade. There were people at each clubhouse that cheered for their favorite golf cart as the parade passed. A special thank you to Bob Whitlock for arranging a very large fire engine to lead the parade. It certainly added a great deal to the parade. After the parade we had over 75 people at the clubhouse for refreshments and an award presentation. Sally Kruse and Gerry McCloskey won first prize and they will be the first winners to be recognized on our beautiful John Brigham trophy. A formal trophy presentation will take place in January. Thank you to all the many people who stepped forward to make everything run smoothly. Start drawing up your designs for next year. 2

8 Geri Piver is that rare person that everyone considers their friend. Her positive attitude, her sparkling smile and willingness to help anyone that needs help is what makes her so special. Geri moved to Pinellas Park in 1970 had six children and was widowed with four children still at home. She was a travel agent for 20 years and after the children were grown did extensive traveling. In 2005 Gerri moved to Mainlands Unit 2 and hasn t stopped volunteering since then. She shares her time and talents with multiple agencies in Pinellas County. She was the coordinator for St. Vincent s DePaul for several years and now the coordinator for His Heart Society (collecting and distributing food for those that are in need), volunteers at Hospice, member of Sacred Heart Church where she has done everything from driving a bus, teaching, serving as an usher, lector and Eucharistic Minister. Gerri recently received the St. Jude Award for (The St. Jude the Apostle Medal is awarded to a lay member of a parish for distinguished and outstanding service to their parish and community.) Since moving to Unit 2, she has volunteered for the Women s Club, Bingo, and recently performed in the Annual Charity Party in the memorable roles of the monkey and the pious nun. Those two roles describe Geri to a T - a fun loving monkey and an ever pious nun. Geri loves to ride her bike and swim so if you re out walking or swimming and see her, smile and she will smile back and if you get a chance pat her on the back. She deserves it. *********************************************************************** 8

10 RULES - DO YOU REMEMBER THIS ONE? PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG! We know that many of you have small dogs, but their leavings still create a mess on your shoes! Absolutely no pets should be in the pool area. Your dog needs to be on a leash at all times. You may know your dog well enough to let him/her walk beside you, but another dog can be a great distraction causing a situation that could create a panic for someone. Do not forget those that just like to walk and do not necessarily want your dog walking with them or jumping on them. Please be a good neighbor and be respectful where your dog is concerned. Our pets will be better appreciated when they are well-behaved and following the rules. KAFFEE KLATCH We need volunteers for serving behind the counter and cleaning up after. Please sign up on the bulletin board. This is an important part of Kaffee Klatch and I hope that we will see more names on the signup sheet for the coming months. If you plan to sponsor a Kaffee Klatch for a special event, please notify Millie Cole at (727) as far in advance as possible so that she can be prepared. CRIME PATROL FOR UNIT 2 The crime patrol needs more volunteers. Wouldn t you like to volunteer? You only have to look and listen if you see something suspicious call Pinellas Park Police (727) If you are interested, call Peter Whyte at (603) Please help to keep our Unit 2 safe. STAY OFF OF THE ROOF All of our roofs are tile and might break if someone walks on them. Also, if you have your trees trimmed, be sure the tree trimmers are aware of where the limbs will fall and make sure the debris does not fall on the roof. ******************************************************************************************* 10
