1 D E C E M B E R A Newsletter for the Panhandle Gems Getting together in the Inland Northwest Volume #14, Issue #8 Arizona Christmas at the Pratts C-h-r-i-s-t-m-a-s! Are you ready for it? As it s just around the corner, you d better be close! I cheated. Yep. Due to going south before Christmas for the first time, we purchased mostly gift cards for those we buy gifts for. Hey, don t judge. Haha! What are you doing this year? Putting your talents into home - made items? Gift cards? Baking your specialties? Did you draw names from a hat for a Secret Santa gift giving? Whatever you did, I m sure it was done with the hopes that the receiver will enjoy whatever you chose. And I am sure that will be the result! In this issue New Year 2017 As another year comes to a close, we tend to reflect more on the past. I ve come to realize that my Grandmother was right. She said, The older you get, the faster time goes. I didn t understand then, but I certainly do now! Where has this year gone? And didn t I just retire a couple of years ago? We tend to galavant through the days without a second thought when we need to remind ourselves to relish the here and now. Especially as we get older. Yesterday is the past. Today is a present we give ourselves. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. May your 2017 be more wonderful than you ever could have hoped! Hugs to you all!! Rallys pg. 2 Reminder, Recipe, & RV info pg. 3 Miscellaneous pg. 4 Trivia time pg. 5 Message from Kathie Balogh pg. 6

3 Reminders, Recipes, RV Info THE LOREM IPSUMS WINTER 2016 Dues Reminder! Don t Forget! The annual membership dues of $20.00 are due on January 1, 2017! Please mail your check, payable to The Panhandle Gems, to our treasurer: Karen Pratt E. 55 th St. Yuma, AZ Winterizing Trick I recently saw this on-line and thought it was a great idea! Let sunshine in & keep winter wind out! On roadlesstraveled.com are several ideas for beating the cold, but the trick of shrink-wrapping your screen door to keep the winter winds out sold me! (Tip #6 at link below) You ll need: A pair of scissors, a razor blade (box cutter or sharp knife), a hair dryer, & a Window Shrink Film Kit. Doing both sides (in & out) works best! The kit comes with double-sided tape. All you have to do is outline the door with the tape, remove the backing, press the plastic onto the tape, trim off the excess, then heat it up with the blow dryer to make the plastic shrink. It s best to clean the doorframe with alcohol or film remover first so the tape adheres well. Detailed instructions here: This recipe was from a customer that gave it to me over 30 years ago! One of Ken s favorites! Thank you Mrs. Anderson! Loretta Molasses Ginger Cookies 1 c. shortening or butter 1 c. sugar 1 egg ¼ c. molasses 2 c. flour ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. ginger ½ tsp. cloves 1 tsp. baking soda Cream shortening & sugar. Add egg & molasses. Beat well. Add spices, salt, & soda. Add flour a little at a time. Roll into marbles, then into granulated sugar. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350 degrees for about minutes depending on if you want soft or crunchy cookies & your oven. NOTES: I use Brer Rabbit Green Label Molasses. 3
4 THE LOREM IPSUMS WINTER 2016!! Needed!! Hosts & Co-Hosts for July! You may think you can t do it, but you CAN!! Do you have an idea for a rally? Perhaps a favorite place you like to go? Turn it into a rally reality! If you ve never hosted a Rally before, ask a veteran to be your co-hosts. They can guide you though what needs to be done. C mon. Give it a try! July would be a great month to host!! Winter Luncheon in Spokane! When Wednesday, December 28th at 11:30 Where Maxx s at the Mirabeau Hotel, I-90 & Sullivan Rd. R.S.V.P. As soon as possible to Gloria & Nolan so they can make reservations! A Message from our Gems President Seasonal Greetings to All! I hope everyone is having fun wherever you are this winter season. I received a letter from FMCA indicating that they have reviewed the Chapter Bylaws and they are in compliance with FMCA requirements. They did make a few suggestions that we may want to consider at our meeting in I have been advised by Kathie Balogh that we, the Panhandle Gems Chapter, will be celebrating our 15 th anniversary on May 19, 2017! She would like to be able to attend our May 2017 Rally to present the Chapter with the certificate from FMCA. I see we still need a Host and location for the July 2017 Rally, too! Let me know if you ever have any questions or recommendations that can be answered or addressed. Art Gemmrig President Panhandle Gems - FMCA 4

6 THE LOREM IPSUMS WINTER 2016 A message from our FMCA N.W. President Merry Christmas and Happy New Year We have just returned from working at the RVIA Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky and now it is time to get serious about the quickly approaching Christmas Season, as well as, the busy winter travels. The Northwest Area Team is working diligently on our upcoming Rally BLAST FROM THE PAST to be held at the Cowlitz County Event Center in Longview, WA from June 22-25, Rally Master Andy Balogh, Assistant Rally Master Don Schleuse, all the Captains and Volunteers are working very hard to make this truly a blast! We are working on some out of the box ideas to make your rally experience a great one. Put us on your calendar and bring your friends & family along in any self-contained RV for a wonderful time. For those of you that are considering attending FMCA s 95 th International Convention, RALLY IN THE VALLEY to be held in Chandler, AZ, March 7 to 10, 2017 and would like to volunteer to help put on this event, contact FMCA at the National Office ( ). The 96 th International Convention, CROSSROADS OF AMERICA will be held in Indianapolis, IN from July 12 15, After the convention, I have reserved some of the RV spots at FMCA s campground in Cincinnati for a small rally for those of us from the Northwest. Available on a first come, first served basis by ing me. I know many of you will be in Indio, California this year for the Western Area Rally; stop by the chapter fair tables and say Hi! We will be having a Northwest Area Gathering on Thursday, January 12, 2017, in the Queen s Gallery immediately following the parade. Of course, there will be some snacks, just what the Northwest is famous for.food and friendship! We will also be heading over to Quartzite for the Big Tent and RV Show and doing some chapter visits in the area. Let us know if you are nearby and let s plan on getting together. Thank you for allowing me to represent you at the Area and National level. Send me any suggestions you may have and I will take your comments and ideas to the National Office. We all want to keep this great association on the right path to prosperity. Together we have accomplished so much over the past few years; with your continued support and suggestions, I know the Northwest Area will continue to lead at all levels of FMCA. Take the time to remember in your thoughts and prayers those we have lost, those that are abroad and cannot be with their families. Give thanks to all those that have given up so much so that we can enjoy our freedom. A big THANK YOU to your Northwest Area Team; Don & Barbara Schleuse, Bobbi Radford, Judie & Jerry Lehenbauer, Dennis & Martie Martin, Bill & Dana Chambers, and my husband, Andy, for continuing to support me by visiting chapters and most of all, keeping me on the straight and narrow. To all of you that I have spoken to during our visits, thank you for your kind words and support, you are what make the Northwest Area a great area. I want to once again thank our webmaster, Sandie Blakley, for making our website, one of the best. Please visit it often for the latest information on rallies and other interesting items. Andy and I hope your holidays are happy and safe no matter where you may be. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a very Happy New Year to all! Kathie
