1 Odyssey O M S Newspaper December 2013 FCCLA FCCLA (Family Career Community Leaders of America) does service projects and hosts events to help our community become stronger. To join FCCLA as an eighth grader, all you have to do is fill out an application form and have it approved by two teachers. If you are interested, you should check out the after school meetings from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., that are held once a month. Some upcoming events are the December after school meeting from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. sometime this week. Further information will soon be on the announcements. Anyone in grades 6 8 can join us; we have fun activities and games planned! Also, recently FCCLA put together care packages to sent over-seas to the soldiers for Christmas. Included were letters from students at OMS as well as treats and personal care items to hopefully brighten their holiday! Leah Gombosch CAVS Career Day On Wednesday, December 4 th, Mrs. Klaus s Careers and Money Class along with the FCCLA went and participated in career day. We toured John Carroll University and listened to our guide talk about all of the things that her college offers. We then went to the Cavs Stadium and listened to people talk about their jobs and how they are an important role in running the games that take place there. One of the jobs was a running the jumbo-tron. This person was in charge of all of the animations that appear after the plays. They were also in charge of shooting the fire during the introduction of the players. We also heard about Impact Teen Driving. This is teaching kids about the importance of paying attention when on the road. The speaker talked about all of the lives lost when texting while driving and giving their attention to anything else besides the road when behind the wheel. After all of the speakers, we watched the Cavs face the Denver Nuggets. Leah Gombosch Student Council Student council is a group of students that help better the community and bring all students of OMS together through hosting fun activities. The Ontario Middle School Student Council unites together every two weeks during the school
2 year to discuss activities they are going to host. To join, your peers have vote for you. At the beginning of the school year, the teachers pass out questionnaires to students who are interested in becoming a Student Council member to see what they have done in the past to assist others. You then have to return the completed form to Mrs. Turnbaugh or Mrs. Wendling and then decide how you are going to campaign for votes. You may make posters, pass out candy, etc. Voting machines are brought in for the OMS students who then vote for 7 candidates of their choice in their grade level. Listen carefully as the results are presented during the announcements that afternoon or the next morning. Fun nights, a talent show, and bake sales are just a few of the activities Student Council members host to raise money. Their biggest project is during Christmas time where they spend the money they have raised on children in need. On their own time, Student Council members go to Wal-Mart to purchase gifts for children who aren t as lucky as some of you may be. On Friday, December 13 th all Student Council members traveled to Crossroads Community Church where they greeted the needy families with warm, fresh cookies and coffee and distributed the gifts they purchased. The gift of giving is one of the greatest experiences one will ever have. The OMS Student Council members include the following: 6 th Grade- Cameron Todd, Alaina Reed, Alex Reed, Ty Spencer, Maddie Mangan Maria Caporini, and Kyle Woods 7th Grade- Bailey Hall, Andrew Cacchio, Parker VanArsdalen, Owen Hall, Anna Gregg, Sylvia Rathburn, and Jordyn Sims. 8 th Grade-, Madi Mueller, Tony Sansalone, Collin Kroll, Trey Thompson, Gretl Bay, and Emma Ruhe. Bailey Hall Eighth Grade Poets Shocked Shocked is like a blue lightening bolt It happens when you touch a live wire Crack and buzz Shocked Jeff Howell Jr. Happy Happy is as green as the grass Happy when surrounded by loved ones Happy sounds like a beautiful song that I can hear Happy Taylor Hoskins Puzzled Is as blue as the ocean When I m stuck upon a problem Puzzled sounds like a bubble popping Puzzled Tony Sansalone

The team is hopeful to bounce back this Thursday to pull of a W vs. the Tiffin Tornadoes. This season, we have a roster of 15 players and so far, we have faced some of the toughest teams in the NOL. We work hard day by day and getting in the gym Wednesday mornings for early bird has been making us better as a group. We took on Tiffin Columbian last Thursday ( ) at OMS at 5:00 tipoff. Tuesday, ( ) our game vs. the Loudonville Redbirds has been canceled and postponed to sometime in January. Parker VanArsdalen had 2 outstanding games so far with a score of 14 in both games vs. Sandusky and Shelby. Avery Fisher and Andrew Cacchio have been getting to the rack this season with a score of 8 vs. the Bellevue Redmen. Isaac Baldridge had a nice game vs. Shelby Monday night with a score of 6. Go Warriors!! Avery Fisher 8 th Grade Boys Basketball Our eighth grade boys basketball team is coached by Andy Kurtz. This warrior basketball season started 2-0. Our next game against Shelby would be the hardest game all season. We unfortunately lost and our record became 2-1. We are keeping our heads up and looking forward to the rest of the season, and getting our revenge on the Shelby Whippets. One of our next games is on December 18 th against Norwalk at Norwalk. Our team is hoping to crush the Truckers and come home with another victory. Make sure you mark your schedule to see one of our games, you won t regret it. On our team we have three captains. These players are Kaden Vavra, Logan Jones, and Sid Caudill. These players are counted on to be leaders and supporters of the team. Our team is full of talented players and we hope to show on the court. Luke Smith Wrestling The 7 th and 8 th grade wrestling team is being coached this year by former Ontario wrestlers; Chad Campbell, Zac Pittman, and Wes Turnbaugh. The Warrior s season is off to a good start, recently the Warriors traveled to Upper Sandusky, where, six wrestlers finished second while two other warriors finished third. The team is planning to take this winning attitude on to future tournaments and tri meets this winter. Come visit your Warriors at their home tri meet in the OHS gymnasium on January 15 th. The Warriors will be ready to take down opponents from Madison and Crestline. Good Job Warrior Wrestling. Noah Creed Austin Ivy Collin Kroll
