1 NARIMASU HIGH SCHOOL, TOKYO JAPAN CLASS OF 1965 ~ 45TH REUNION HONOLULU, HI JUNE 3-5, 2010 Celebrating Hawaiian Style! On Thursday, June 3, 1965, at 1930 hours, Narimasu High School s Class of 65 began the processional in Grant Height Chapel to begin graduation excercises. Exactly 45 years later on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in Cafe Hula Girl in Honolulu, Hawaii, Peggy Niess Rhodes led 20 other classmates in singing the Narimasu Alma Mater. So began a special 45th reunion celebration! HULA DANCING! After a hula by Ellen Sayama Arakawa to keep your eyes on the hands, Lynnette Nishioka gracefully performed Hoo welcoming all to the island. Mr. and Miss Narimasu, Bob Gelwicks and Cathy VanNatta Sacasas performed Hukilau, a hula Bob actually remembered dancing at Drake Jr. High School! With the need for more hula dancers, Jan Oglesby Schiller and Jan Hillman Bowen gamely swung their hips too! Still looking good -- the Class of 1965 Kneeling: Ellen Sayama Arakawa, Candy Clawson Gans, Lynnette Nishioka Sakamoto, 2nd row: Pam Tuck Mullis, Lillian Higuchi Fesler, Jan Oglesby Schiller, Pat Cavaco Kessinger, Marsha Koeber Thrall, Helena Hu Zimmerman, Lauri Gill Bennett. 3rd row: Stan Yamamoto, Bob Seelos, Cecil Andrews, Bob Gelwicks, Karen Lipsey Ioffredo, Jan Hillman Bowen, Peggy Niess Rhodes, Cathy VanNatta Sacasas. Missing; Michele Donald Schlough who attended the reunion but was unable to make the banquet. Ellen, Cathy, Bob and Lynnette wait for the ama ama fish to swim to them. The two Jans -- Jan Oglesby Schiller and Jan Hillman Bowen cast their nets out into the sea. Reconnecting and making new friends -- Jeff Livingston talks to Karen Sorensen Singleton while Lillian Higuchi Fesler meets Cheryl Seelos, Bob s wife.
2 Friday, June 4th -- Off to Pearl Harbor, Golfing and Picnic An early morning start with a 7:30 am tee time for golfers Stan Yamamoto, Jeff Livingston and Karen & Ted Singleton. An 8 am departure by many to the USS Arizona Memorial still resulted in long wait times, but gave all the chance to sit around and catch up. Actual footage of the Dec. 7 attack and a shuttle boat ride to the ship which eerily still emits oil reminded us of the sacrifices made by many. USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL Ed and Jan Schiller, Bob Gelwicks and Robbin Livingson at the anchors When the group arrived at Ala Moana Beach Park, they were met with pupus (appetizers) and yakitori grilled by Stan and Myron, Ellen s husband. A mini Hawaiian luau of poi, kalua pig, chicken long rice, pineapple, rice, haupia, lomi salmon and a cake which showed the Class of 65 sign hung between two coconut trees. After viewing two spectacular fireworks shows, the group packed into Lynnette s and Ellen s room where they watched a DVD, Brats: Our Journey Home sent by Royal Peggy Rhodes and Lauri Bennett wait to board the shuttle to the Arizona. Kennedy Rogers. Bob Gelwicks who had already seen the documentary earlier commented that it was even more special this time viewing it with all who could relate to the stories shown. It elicited spontaneous laughter, sighs, and even tears as all remembered the joys, adventure and rigors of being a military brat who learned to follow orders and lived on so many bases. More pictures of the picnic and DVD showing on the following page SUNSET PICNIC AT ALA MOANA BEACH PARK Our Own Yakitori Men: Stan Yamamoto and Myron Arakawa Quick -- Take the picture before we lose the ligh! 4 Saturday, June 5th: Iolani Palace, Chinatown and the BIG NIGHT! A visit to the only authentic palace in the U.S. started the tour of the State capitol, statutes of King Kamehameha, Queen Liliuokalani, and Father Damien and ended with a lunch in Chinatown. Even with a heavier than expected lunch for some, all were ready for the wonderful Seafood Buffet at the Hawaii Waikiki Prince Hotel. All were lei-ed -- the alums received a white orchid lei with a blue ribbon while the spouses and guests received purple orchid leis. In keeping with the Pacific-Asian- American theme, Lynnette, Stan and Ellen greeted everyone. They were followed by Student Council President Jeff Livingston who remembered classmates, Jim Jernigan, Mike Miller, Rod Baber, and Greg Clapper who left us all too soon. Then the party began! Myron had an icebreaker (for the class that didn t need an icebreaker by now) and had Helena, Karen, Pam and Peggy show everyone how to dance the Mashed Potato, Jerk, Watusi, Monkey, Twist, etc. They still had the moves! The group waits for the docent to start the tour. After dinner, omiyage (souvenirs) were presented to all. Cecil Andrews won the Dragon T-shirt and Lillian Fesler won the Dragon bag. Then it was time for dancing to the oldies but goodies. All too soon, it was time to say Sayonara or Aloha, but not before enough pictures were taken to IOLANI PALACE Michele and Charles Schlough slip on booties for the Iolani Palace Tour fill the albums in the welcome bags (decorated by the Dragon drawn on the Sensu by Jan Bowen in 65). Perhaps, the reunion is best summed up by the saying in the fortune cookie presented as favors, Imua (forward) Class of 65, Mata oai shimasho (Let s meet again)! THE PACIFIC-ASIAN-60 S BLAST! Eating 100% Laughing 100% Drinking 75% Dancing 66% Lynnette: Aloha, E Komo Mai Stan: Minasama, Konbanwa, Yokoto Ellen: Welcome Myron tells Helena, Karen, Pam and Peggy to show em how to dance! (More pictures on the following page) Winning Prizes 100% Reminiscing 80% Chairing the 50th Karen!
