1 Nor thern Nevada Chapter America Sewing Guild Reno, Nevada April June 2012 Volume 13 - Issue 2 Happy Summer everyone! We ve had another successful garage sale. I think we re close to breaking the record. I thank everyone who helped make this a successful event. My cats were very intrigued with all the piles of fabric for them to explore. Sammy found a very comfortable place to take a nap. Have no fear if you missed this one or missed donating to this one. We ll most likely be having one in the fall. National Conference is rapidly approaching in August. It will be held in Houston, TX. If you plan on going and need a roommate check with me first, please. We had a great turn out at the Diane Ericson workshop last month. Again, thanks to everyone who helped with the event. I believe everyone had a great time and learned some new things. Diane Boone has some wonderful things planned for us the rest of the year, I m sure you will find more information further in the newsletter. Candace Andrews will be heading up a stuffed animal project and I ll be hosting a couple of sit n sews for the Christmas stockings for the Children s Cabinet. If you have a community service project you would like to head -up please don t hesitate to contact me. Maybe we could tentatively schedule her for January Chapter Library Newsletter request I am asking the membership what direction they would like to take with the library. There has been little to no interest to check out books so I need your input. 1. Do you want to keep the Library? 2. Do we want to sell the books at a garage sale and not have a library? 3. Is there someone who has ideas on how to spark interest in our library or a passion for being the librarian? 4. Please come to our July meeting with your thoughts. Thank you, Jan Beck janicebeck@charter.net. Page 4
5 Nevada Textile Museum Tour Hi All, Hope you are enjoying summer! Our visit to the Textile Museum in Carson is all set. We will meet in the Franktown Corners parking lot on Wednesday, July 25, at 3:00. If you would be willing to drive, taking some gals with you, please let me know. Our tour is 4:00-6:00 p.m.. If there is enough interest, I would be willing to arrange a no-host dinner at the Eagles restaurant in Carson after the tour so we can share our impressions and favorite pieces from the collections. The donation/fee for the tour is $10 per person. I ve asked the ASG CAB to fund this expense (a great suggestion made by Jean Green), but have not heard from them as yet. The space in the museum is quite limited, so Jan (Curator) limits the size of the group to 22. Your spot will be reserved for you if you are in the first 22 to signed up. Please note that the Textile Museum is not open to the public, so this tour is a special opportunity available to our local ASG chapter members. Thank you & I hope you can join us. Please or call ( ) if you have any questions. Diane Tips & Tricks: a new section for the newsletter My submissions for this issue: (1) Use a little dab of Fray Check to keep your embroidery trims from unraveling later. Apply to the back of the embroidery and then iron them dry. This keeps the fray check from being hard and scratchy against your skin. (2) Use pinking shears to trim away your excess embroidery backing. This helps keep the backing from showing through to the front side. Julie Hilsabeck Tip: Is the waist on your pants too tight? And if you buy a larger size the hips and thighs are waaaaay too big? I have used Kathy Ruddy's Elastic Waist expander (a six inch wedge shaped piece of elastic). Simply separate side seams at the waist (how far depends on the width you want to add). Sew in the Elastic Wedge and viola! -a larger waist on the pants. Jean Green Volume 13 - Issue 2 Page 5
6 2012 Annual Garage Sale June 9 th, By: Jean Green, Garage Sale Chair Another great Garage Sale. The weather co-operated no rain, not too much wind. It still amazes me how we gather so much fabric every year. We had everything from knits, to designer fabrics, home decor, cottons, wools, fleece, and on and on. I would venture a guess that we have more garment fabric that JoAnne Fabrics or Hancock fabrics. It took two -3/4 ton trucks, one full sized pick-up and four SUV s to move the goods from the storage shed to Laurie Bray s home (she kindly hosted the event again this year). The trucks were courtesy of Jackie Joy s husband; Verla Jackson s gentleman friend; Julie Hilsabecks husband; and Nancy Stevens gentleman friend. Those vehicles moved in with precision, within half an hour they were loaded and gone!. Laurie s home makes a nice location plenty of room to set-up tables in the driveway, we also use the garage itself, and a nice courtyard to put notions so they don t blow away. And most important, a nice shady patio in her back yard to use to for breaks and lunch. Volunteers also provided an excellent lunch both days, we always eat well. 17 ASG volunteers showed up Friday to help open boxes, sort and mark the fabric. We even had a ½ volunteer in Marian, Kerstin Stanley s daughter. Marian was a very energized worker, and seemed to have a love of fabric and right attitude Mom, I want this fabric!. I just love future shoppers. Notions were organized, patterns were sorted by type; and somehow we collected a whole new supply of books and magazines. We had books and magazines on Garment Sewing, Pattern Making, General Sewing, Fashion, Quilting, Machine Embroidery, Hand Embroidery, Costumes, Beading, Weaving, Lace Making, Dying, and many other miscellaneous subjects. Matter of fact, book sales were very brisk, some buyers sat on the ground going through books for hours. 11 of these dedicated volunteers showed up again Saturday to work the sale and repack everything to return to the storage shed. It was nice to see familiar faces among the shoppers and meet new people. Plus our gross sales were $2,190.36! That s $ more than last year. (I was really hoping for $3000. Well there s always next year!) Thank you, thank you, thank you - to all of you who volunteered (including the friends and family members that you coerced into helping). The event would not be possible without dedicated members like you. And of course, a thank you to all of you who shopped $ Sammy (Laurie s kitty) found the knits a great place to take a nap! 7 Camp Sew-n-Sew Verla Jackson, Chair Our 7 th annual Camp Sew-n-Sew was held March 23 rd 25 th at St. Mary s Art Center in Virginia City. We had 15 attendees, some of whom were new to our event. We had many new items that we held drawings for and a gift bag waiting for each guest in their room. We started at 10 am on Friday instead of our usual after 1 pm, so a few extra hours were added on. Many of the ladies were able to finish many of their projects they brought to work on and really appreciated the ability to arrive earlier than normal to begin the weekend. As always, we had lots of great food for meals and snacks we shared! Our weather this year was better with only one of our members unable to attend due to concerns about the weather and getting over Donner Pass. Next year we have reserved April 5 th -7 th, 2013 to hopefully allay any weather concerns for attendees. If you have never attended or it s been some time since you last attended Camp SNS, please consider joining us next year! We have lots of fun, lots of time for your sewing/craft/quilting projects (yes, you can work in your pajamas if you want) and the camaraderie is wonderful!!!! St. Mary s Arts Center is a beautiful and comfortable place to stay even though your knees get a work-out from all the stairs! (Can you identify these camp attendees?) For a grand baby to be: Whew! I finally got the top put together: Volume 13 - Issue 2 Page 7
