President s Report Written by Jillian Dwyer, President NJCA With the new season 2017/2018 fast approaching we take this opportunity to look back at what the NJCA has achieved in the last 12 months. T20 Blast: This cricketing experience is in its 2nd season and is aimed at the U8's to U10 s. It sees multiple games played at the one venue with music and skills zones. Whilst our centres at Harker Oval and No.1 Sportsground maintained numbers from the 1st season, unfortunately our other centres did not fare so well and overall our numbers dropped from 48 teams in the first season to 43 in the second. Further work needs to be done at these centres to ensure that T20 Blast continues to grow. Under 11 CA Formats: This possibly our biggest achievement in 2016/17. Newcastle took the initiative to adopt the new CA format as a pilot. Whilst other associations adopted the recommended CA rules, Newcastle also introduced 5 bonus runs for wickets taken. A record 34 teams participated in the trial that involved teams of 7 players, shorter wicket lengths and smaller boundaries. Cricket NSW went to great lengths to monitor game results and survey participants, parents and coaches. The results showed significantly less no balls and wides, more runs scored, more boundaries and overall more enjoyment from players, coaches and parents. One of the main benefits from hosting the pilot was that the NJCA had some input into the final rules to be adopted by Cricket Australia with the final rules adopting the 4 bonus runs for wickets and increasing wicket lengths from the initial 15 metres to 16 metres. It is hoped that the new Under 11 CA formats will both increase the number of players to the game in future years and help retain players for many years beyond Under 11 s. Girls Sixers League: This was a ew competition introduced for girls aged 10 to 13. We had 4 teams participate in an 8 week competition at Smith Park of a Friday evening prior to Christmas and a further 4 teams in a shortened competent after Christmas. Cricket NSW invested heavily in promoting this competition and it is hoped that the NJCA can grow on this with the addition of an Under 16 competition in the upcoming season. 5

Womens Cricket: The NJCA played a major role in the introduction of Newcastle s first ever women s cricket competition. Initially hoping for an 8 team competition, we were eventually forced to cap entries at a massive 20 teams. As a participant in this competition itself I can vouch for its success and recommend all other women to join in this season. Representative Cricket: More recently changes have been made to our representative program to ensure more professionalism with selections, coaching appointments and coaching programs. This has been achieved through the involvement of Cricket NSW Academy coaches and will hopefully will result in greater transparency and consistency in the years ahead. Smith Park Nets: Four years of negotiations and fundraising finally saw the successful completion of our 5 lane nets at Smith Park. A huge thank you to Sharyn Beck, Jason McKendry, Michael O Sullivan and everyone else involved for their determination and perseverance to provide our representative players and the cricketing community with such a quality facility. A big thank you to the committee members of the NJCA for their tireless efforts in ensuring that all members have an enjoyable experience in whatever format they play. In particular, I would like to thank the retiring Jason McKendry for his significant contribution to junior cricket over the last 8 seasons. Thank you also to Sharyn Beck, our NJCA Administrator, for her dedication not only to our committee but to all the clubs and players. Her support is paramount to the success of junior cricket in the Newcastle region. 6

Administrator s Report Season was another successful year for junior cricket in Newcastle due the enthusiastic players, parents and amazing club volunteers that contribute so much of their time and energy. Without committee members, coaches, managers, scorers, umpires, and parents it would not be possible to have such a fantastic competition. The NJCA is committed to providing the best junior competition possible and there have been some really special highlights and opportunities this year that I would like to mention: Newcastle s Festival of Cricket January 2017 was a very busy month of cricket in Newcastle! Aptly named, the Festival of Cricket, (sponsored by Newcastle City Council), over 1000 junior cricketers converged on Newcastle to participate in the U11 Ron Arendts Memorial Shield, NDCA T20 Competition, U14 Graeme Malcolm Shield and the Bradman Cup. U11 Ron Arendts Memorial Shield - The Newcastle Junior Cricket Association hosted the U11 Ron Arendts Memorial Shield from the 3 rd until the 6 th January, The carnival commenced in January 2007 with 4 teams participating in its initial year, and now in its 11 th year, the popular carnival attracted 16 teams (including an all-girl team) from across Hunter Valley, Central Coast, Illawarra, and metropolitan Sydney. Nearly 200 very excited young cricketers started the carnival on Monday by competing in two T20 matches with some very close results, followed by a 40 over match on Tuesday. Wednesday saw the teams participate in semi-finals based on pool results, with teams contending the finals and play-off games on Thursday. For the first time in 11 years, the grand final match was played on a turf wicket at the beautiful No 1 Sportsground, a facility that has hosted numerous Sheffield Shield and international matches in the past. The grand final was contested between North Shore and Hornsby Ku-ring-gai with North Shore winning the toss and choosing to bat first, posting a score of 9/125. Hornsby Ku-ring-gai were unsuccessful in their run chase and were all out for 90 after 34 overs. Once again, there some great displays of sportsmanship throughout the week and some fantastic individual performances. The individual award winners were as follows: Batter of the Carnival - Nikhil Thokala (Blacktown) Bowler of the Carnival - Zane Leadbitter (Illawarra) Fielder of the Carnival - Jordon Baylis (Newcastle All Stars) Player of the Carnival - Andrew Salian (Camden) U11 Winners: North Shore DCA U14 Graeme Malcolm Shield - Two weeks later, a record 14 teams participated in the U14 Graeme Malcolm Shield from the 15 th until the 19 th January, Now in its 36 th year, teams travelled from all over NSW to participate in the carnival which is played completely on turf wickets. Teams were scheduled to play three rounds of 50 over matches from Sunday to Tuesday with semi-finals played on Wednesday based on pool results, and the grand-final and play-offs were contested on Thursday. This year Newcastle faced soaring temperatures, forcing the decision to reduce matches to 30 overs for player safety on Tuesday and Wednesday, a decision that was welcomed by the majority of players and families who took the opportunity to explore Newcastle s beaches! Fortunately, temperatures settled on Thursday allowing play to return to normal for finals. 7

Results between the winners of each pool were incredibly close, separated only by quotients, with the eventual grand finalists being Mid North Coast and Manly Warringah. In a nail-biting match at Passmore Oval, Mid North Coast had Manly Warringah all out for 102 after 46 overs, and chased the total down in 32 overs losing only 5 wickets. Again, there were some excellent displays of sportsmanship between teams and outstanding personal performances. The individual awards were as follows: U14 Winners: Mid North Coast pictured with NJCA s Jim Brennan, Sharyn Beck and Jillian Dwyer. Batter of the Carnival Jordan Watson (Penrith) Bowler of the Carnival Flynn Caston (Penrith) Fielder of the Carnival Mitchell Crayn (North Shore) and Jordan Heil (Central Coast) Player of the Carnival Mitchell Korn (Mid North Coast) and Lachlan Soles (Hornsby Ku-ring-gai) Ground Improvements Each season the NJCA commits $10,000 to assist clubs with wicket and practice net upgrades for their grounds. In addition, the NJCA were successful in obtaining additional grants from Newcastle City Council of $2450 to assist with repairing and replacing synthetic coverings. The NJCA contributed to the following projects in season : Newcastle City repairs and upgrades to Empire Park cricket nets; Newcastle City / NJCA Representative repairs to synthetic at Smith Park 1; Western Suburbs full synthetic replacement at Kentish Oval 2; Wallsend RSL Diggers half synthetic replacement at Federal Park 2; NJCA spare ground full synthetic replacement at Cook Park. Smith Park Cricket Net Facility Newcastle Junior Cricket Association Life Members Brent Niszczot and Jason McKendry had a vision for a cricket net training facility at Smith Park, the home of junior representative cricket, and in 2010 they were responsible for designing and drafting the initial plans. Finally, seven years later their vision was fulfilled when a state of the art, five lane cricket net facility, was officially opened on Friday, 9 th December, 2017 at Smith Park by Mr Tim Crakanthorp MP, State Member for Newcastle. Costing $120,000, the facilities were only made possible by grants received from the Community Building Partnership ($35,000), and the Cricket NSW and McDonald s Facility Grant Program ($20,000). The Newcastle Junior Cricket Association contributed the remaining $65,000 for the benefit of not only local junior cricketers, but the community of Newcastle. The NJCA have been working with Newcastle City Council since 2012 to try to build the cricket net facility. We were faced with many challenges along the way and on many occasions, it appeared that 8

we would have to abandon the project. The NJCA had to address the issues of tree removal, drainage, and car parking and we are exceptionally grateful to Michael O Sullivan who was responsible for preparing a comprehensive Development Application to meet Newcastle City Council s criteria. There is no question that if we did not have the assistance of Michael we would not have been able to complete the project. We were fortunate that our grant providers shared our vision for the facility and were willing to extend our deadline for acquittal of the funds. We are very proud of the achievement and look forward to the cricketing community benefiting from the facility for many years to come. Thank you - I would like to say thank you to the club volunteers whom I work with on a regular basis. Thank you for making the junior cricket community vibrant and friendly. I would also like to thank the NJCA Management Committee for your support and trust. I am very much looking forward to Season and the exciting times ahead for Newcastle. 10 Game Development Review: Hunter Region Executive Summary Cricket NSW Game Development Department continues to support the strong growth of cricket across NSW. Implementing Cricket NSW Strategic Plan Pillar 3, we aim to increase substantially and inspire the next generation of cricket players, fans and volunteers. This report provides a summary of Game Development initiatives delivered in the Hunter Region which encompasses Newcastle Zone and the Hunter Valley Cricket Council Associations during Our Game Development priorities working with Associations, Clubs and the community are very clear with a strategic focus on: - Cricket aiming to be No.1 for men and women, boys and girls, therefore growing the base of female players and fans is vital. Implementing customer-friendly formats at all levels of the Australian Cricket Pathway. Integrating BBL and WBBL in the participation pathway to leverage the success these competitions have in attracting fans and promoting cricket participation. Highlights There were two strategies implemented during that shone the national spotlight on the Hunter Region and at the forefront of driving game development initiatives. The willingness of Newcastle and Singleton Junior Associations to adopt a Cricket Australia pilot of playing formats in their competitions to field test changes to the way junior cricket is played was visionary. The formats challenged traditional thinking and involved hundreds of man-hours in making presentations, delivering coach education sessions, collecting match data, surveys and resource support and I commend volunteers in both associations for their commitment and support. Results of feedback and match data collected during the pilot have been used to make changes to formats with a national rollout in The other outstanding highlight was female participation with eight teams of under 13 s participating in the Sixers Girls Cricket League and over two hundred women in the social media-driven open age Sixers Social Women s League in Newcastle with teams drawn together on Facebook participating in six rounds of cricket on Sunday afternoons. The presentation evening was an outstanding success with Newcastle s own WNCL player Corinne Hall attending and my thanks are extended to Newcastle Administrator Sharyn Beck for her vision and to the team of volunteers who set-up venues and managed matches throughout the competition. 10

Our core Game Development work again focused on schools, clubs and the community with strong results achieved. Here s a brief snapshot: - Schools Cricket continues to enjoy a strong relationship with Hunter schools with a suite of programs to suit all stages including: - School Ambassador Programs Sporting Schools MILO in2cricket Skills MILO T20 Blast School Cup events T20 Blast School Cup events provide an ideal recruitment tool for clubs with boys and girls playing the same game format on a school days as they would for their club. Singleton exercised best-practice in hosting their first school cup event which attracted 350 students from surrounding schools by operating a canteen and promoting registration opportunities for Entry Level Programs and junior cricket competition. Selected schools in the region piloted a Mascot Challenge Program in Term 1 aimed at K-2 students with very positive results. The program will be rolled out nationally later in Teachers were encouraged to sign on as School Ambassadors presenting in-school cricket programs for students in both primary and secondary schools. In all, 4518 students participated in in2cricket Skills Programs, 788 were involved in Sporting Schools clinics while 5305 students attended T20 Blast School Cup events. Clubs & Associations It was exciting to see several women play leading roles in administering their associations including an all-female Executive in Newcastle and others serving in key-positions in other associations. Traditional Cricket administration cannot survive in the increasingly competitive sport and leisure market which demands strong governance, innovative thinking, diverse skill-sets and professional delivery. Associations need to be clearly focused on their purpose and strategy to support the expected lift in participation which will benefit them. This includes increasing cricket s footprint in several housing developments under construction across the region. Entry Level Programs MILO in2cricket and MILO T20 Blast continue to attract new players to cricket however there is room for clubs and associations to build capacity further by expanding the number of MILO T20 Blast centres and increasing participation in existing MILO in2cricket centres. 65 coaches completed the Community Coach Course (Level 1) designed to provide coaches with the tools to run vibrant and engaging training sessions the Australian Way for young players. Coaches play a pivotal role in a player s enjoyment of the game through skill acquisition and opportunity and coach education should be supported and encouraged. The Growing Girls Cricket Fund Grants were made available for the first time to support the development of female playing opportunities. Several associations received funding with the standout competition in Newcastle where eight teams participated in twilight games before and after Christmas. 11

The Australian Cricket Club and Association Framework has been released with a strategic planning template available for volunteers to use to align their club and association aims and objectives under five pillars:- Players, People, Places, Partnerships and Promotion. Strategic plans are a regular feature in presentations to local government and potential sponsors and it was great to work with Singleton, Newcastle and Maitland to adopt plans for their associations. The McDonalds-CNSW Community Grants were again made available to clubs and associations to support upgrades or establish new facilities. The number of submissions received was less than anticipated however the national facility audit undertaken in February should provide a clear list of priorities to support future applications. For more information on running healthy associations and clubs, go to Community Once again there were several community engagements and activations designed to promote cricket in the Hunter during the season that included: - Sixers Beach Blast A Sport for All Seminars Sixers Holiday Clinics CNSW Winter Development Squads All-Ability Clinics Toyota Country Blitz NSW player visits Plan B Regional Bash matches Lend Lease NSW Breakers school visits During the season, it was pleasing to provide a small token of appreciation to a number of volunteers who had made significant contributions to the growth and appeal of Cricket in the Hunter over the past twelve months. In a first for the region, Cricket NSW partnered with Singleton association to recognize local mums who commit a huge amount of their time to junior cricket through administration, coaching, scoring and managing teams. We thank all volunteers who assisted in facilitating cricket during and we d like to see all associations recognizing their volunteers without whom, we would not have a game. In conclusion, I thank everyone who supported Cricket NSW development initiatives to grow cricket during We look forward to exciting times ahead for Cricket through the expansion of professional delivery models, increasing female participation and implementing Junior Formats and the Australian Cricket Pathway that will grow sustainable participation and ensure a strong future in the seasons ahead. 13 Representative Cricket U11 DEVELOPMENT SQUAD Written by Luke Harradine, Manager, U11 Development Squad Under 11 Development Squad Members: Joe Harrison, Jordan Pitt, Alex Frith, Jared Galvin, Harrison Sharples, Nathan Mills, Thomas Karnaghan, Thor Harradine, Isaac Cruckshank, Duncan Brown, Nathan Hunton, William Devine, Jack Hogan, Declan Hawkins-Power, Alexander Scott, Bailey Fisher, Jamie Farthing, Riley Petrie, Tom Borrow. Coach: Darren Castle. Manager: Luke Harradine. It was a season full of learning for the boys in the under 11 IDCA team this year. From the first trial game against a strong Illawarra outfit, our boys started their education about what it is to play representative cricket. The intensity was well above what any of them had expected and it was fair to say that they were like a deer in the headlights. It did give us a strong starting point and something that we reflected on all season Remember how we felt against those guys? Well, that is how we need to be in the field so that the next team feels the same way when they are in bat. That mantra carried us through into the first round against Sutherland. Our focus in the field was upping the intensity and reducing the amount of extras bowled. We did that quite well in game 1, bowling only 21 sundries whilst dismissing Sutherland for 84. Tom Borrow, Alex Frith and Joe Harrison all reached double figures to ensure the win. Our first foray to Sydney also proved fruitful for the boys. We won the toss and batted against a strong Canterbury West team. Tom Borrow, Tom Karnaghan, Declan Hawkins-Power and Joe Harrison reached double figures whilst Jared Galvin played a wonderful innings of 42 runs. Outstanding fielding resulting in 2 run outs and miserly bowling from Alex Frith saw Newcastle come away with 2 wins from 2 games and the boys had a firm belief in their abilities and our coming together nicely as a team. In the last round before the Ron Arendts carnival, Newcastle played Blacktown. We lost a few early wickets and were restricted in runs until Jordan Pitt came to the crease. He dismantled the Blacktown attack, blasting 58 runs including 8 fours and a 6 in a destructive innings. Unfortunately it was in vain as Blacktown got the runs with 12 balls to spare. Nathan Hunton was the pick of our bowlers with 3 for 19 from 6 overs. The Ron Arendts carnival was some fantastic fun. The only thing better than playing 1 game in a week is playing 5! We started strongly defeating Penrith comfortably in game 1. Jared Galvin and Joe Harrison scored 20 odd each as we reached the victory total of 84 with 3 overs to spare. Game 2 of the carnival saw us come up against the eventual finalists Hornsby Ku-ring-gai. We batted first and Thor Harradine top scored with a well put together 25, ably supported by Jordy Pitt (18) and Riley 13

Petrie (16) to reach 91 runs. The game seemed to be getting away from Newcastle until Jack Hogan was injected into the attack. He took 2 wickets in the final over and the match was tied! An incredible result and one which the boys were extremely proud of. Round 3 saw Newcastle play Central Coast. A low scoring affair for us, getting rolled for 48. Central Coast cruised past our score for the loss of only 3 wickets. It was a disappointing result, but the boys were still full of pep and ready for the next game. In the final game of the carnival, Newcastle came up against the Newcastle All Stars. We found our bats again with Jared Galvin (29), Joe Harrison (41) and Jamie Farthing (19) contributing to the total of 137. The All Stars gave chase but had trouble negotiating some accurate bowling from Nathan Hunton, Jared Galvin and Joe Harrison who all took 2 wickets each. Our grand final game was against a fired up Many Warringah team. We lost early wickets but a middle order resurgence led by Thor Harradine (18) and lower order destroyer Jack Hogan (14) saw us post a competitive total of run outs in the opening 8 overs saw Manly having to work hard to score runs. Eventually though, Manly proved too strong and reached the total with 12 overs to spare, but 6 down. A tough game, but one in which the boys held strong. After the carnival break, Newcastle resumed the Colin Cooper Cup against North Shore. Slow scoring from us batting first saw us struggle early. Wickets fell regularly until some lower order hitting from Jack Hogan and Duncan Brown (15 each) saw us post 88. Belief was high in our bowling and with accurate bowling from Alex Frith (2 for 10) and Bailey Fisher (4 for 16) backed up with outstanding fielding, another close game went our way as we bowled North Shore out for 87! In round 6 we travelled to Hornsby to play Hornsby Red. Newcastle lost the toss and Hornsby scored runs early, only our fielding keeping us in the contest. Late bowling from Nathan Mills, Jordy Pitt and Bailey Fisher (2 wickets each) saw us restrict Hornsby to 119 runs. Our boys had a good feeling about the pitch and went into bat with a good attitude. Nathan Mills saw them well early scoring 37 and some power hitting from Thor Harradine (41) saw us cruise to victory with 3 overs to spare. A wonderful victory with the Hornsby coach full of praise for our boys. In the final game of the season, we took on the NWS Hurricanes. Bowling first, Newcastle were unable to make inroads but our fielding kept us in the match. Wickets were eventually shared around and we kept the opposition to a total of 96. Our batting was on point though and the top 3 batsmen Riley Petrie (19), Jamie Farthing (24) and Alex Scott (23) helped us to victory with 9 overs to spare. It was the end of a wonderful season. Many thanks go to coach Darren Castle for his planning and knowledge over the course of the season. Also to the wonderful parents who transported the kids all over the place and prepared wonderful lunches for the teams who visited. 14

Written by Steve Durrant, Coach U11 All Stars It certainly was a rewarding experience on many fronts to coach this wonderful team. From the very beginning, this group of admirable young people showed strength and character, commitment and enthusiasm. Every player had a vital role on the team and contributed great skills, sportsmanship or attitude that is to be highly commended. We started forming some great combinations and we had some big chases in only 20 overs, but the boys showed strength and determination. It was a great pleasure to coach such a young bunch of kids in such a short space of time. From the outset this great bunch of boys never let me down. Jordan Baylsis had never captained a side before, and showed determination and motivation in his role. The passion at training, and the dedicated shown was very pleasing to see from such a great bunch of boys. Thank you to Chris Dickson and Mike Makenzie for their valuable contribution during the carnival, warming up the boys and assisting with umpiring. Also, Kim for bringing some lovely tea for everyone. Thank you to Dave Woods and Lisa Hardy for scoring each game, and Kylie Woods for photos. I really appreciated all your assistance. Lastly thank you to all the parents bringing the boys each week, for the wonderful food they brought each game, and for being part of the team. This was one of the best groups I ve had the pleasure to be part of in such short space of time. 19

Written by Scott Lennox, Coach U12 Presidents U12 PRESIDENTS TEAM U12 Presidents Team Members: Tim Hayes, Zac Lennox, Samuel Guy, Sam Mellor-Engin, Wil Mortimer, Bailey Robards, Patrick Webber, Kurt Fraser, Will Mortimer, Edward Andrews, Jackson Kendall, Cameron Claridge, Jimmy Skelly, Cael Mowbray, Dominic Smith, Matthew Lyons. Coach: Scott Lennox. Manager: Clare Mortimer. Firstly a massive thanks to all of the parents for their efforts in getting the kids to training, games and the Lismore carnival which involved a lot of travel. Secondly all the parents who scored, helped with lunches and all the odd jobs that need to be done so the kids can enjoy their cricket. A special thank you to Claire Mortimer who did a superb job as manager and Glenn Skelly as assistant coach who was everywhere I couldn't be. Our IDCA season was quite successful with 5 wins from 7 matches. We had one close loss which could have gone either way and a cricket lesson from a very good North Shore team on a very hot day. Lismore was a bit tougher running into some good DCA sides however we managed to get a win there as well. We had many fantastic individual performances over the season, but my main goal for the boys was to learn cricket is truly a team sport were everybody tries to contribute individually to produce the best result for their team. I look forward to seeing all the kids grow and keep improving their skills and most importantly playing for their team with their teams interests for most in their mind. 20

IDCA Season Report, written by Ankur Sarawal, Coach U13 IDCA season was a very successful one for the U13 Presidents team. Most of the players had played together the year before which helped with teamwork and team bonding, making the season very enjoyable as well. We played 3 games before the holidays and carnival and we had good wins in all 3 games. After a few weeks of training and a couple of trial games, we played our first game versus Sutherland. Although there were several good performances, one that deserves a mention is from Joel Van Haren. In his 8 overs spell he bowled 7 maidens, gave only 2 runs and took 6 wickets including a hat-trick. We chased 140 with 5 wickets down and 10 overs remaining. The second game was against Northern Districts which we won by 86 runs after scoring 250. Our top order batted very well and amongst the runs were Sam Bollipo, Nixon Stanbridge, Dan Redpath and Cooper Lack. Third game was against Georges River St George and we won that by 43 runs. Batting first we scored 173 and Sam Bollipo, Dom Stanbridge and Dan Redpath batted well. We got St George all out for 130 and the pick of the bowlers was Zac Stanbridge taking 3 wickets and Regan Birks bowling 4 maidens and 1 wicket in his spell. We then had a Christmas break and carnival at Ballina. Unfortunately, I couldn t go to the carnival in Ballina so Paul Hillier coached the team in my absence. After the carnival we were scheduled for 3 round games and the last game was positioning game. The first game back (round 4) was against Central Coast where we batted first and scored 126 after losing 4 early wickets. Jack Hillier played a brilliant knock of 41 and was supported by Alex Nicholson who scored 21. We bowled and fielded very well defending a small total and at one stage we had Central Coast 8 down for 89. The pick of the bowlers were Regan Birks taking 4 wickets and Zac Stanbridge taking 3 wickets. We couldn t get them all out and Central Coast ended up winning by 1 wicket. The next game was against Hornsby where we batted first and ended up winning by a margin of 6 runs. We scored 159 and were all out in the 40th over. We bowled and fielded very well and got 4 runouts to restrict Hornsby to 153. Round 6 against Manly was cancelled due to extreme weather and we finished 3rd on the ladder. After first 6 round games we had won 4 games, lost 1 and drew 1. The last game was against Illawarra which we lost by 4 wickets after scoring 145. It was a great experience for the players as we got to play on a turf pitch at Townsend Oval. I would like to thank Phil and Dave Stanbridge for organising the ground and providing a great experience to the players. A special mention to Jack Hillier for his outstanding performance as the captain of the team. He displayed great leadership and kept getting better and more confident as the season progressed. Overall we had a very successful season and the players had a lot of fun along the way. I would like to thank all the parents for their support and their commitment. Special thanks to Julie and Simon Lack for managing the team and Simon was also a great help during training sessions. We were very lucky to have the support of Hillier family throughout the season. The players really enjoyed having Nathan around for training sessions and learned a lot from him. Paul and Nathan also looked after the team at the carnival. Phil and David Stanbridge were very supportive and helpful as well. Also huge thanks to other parents who helped out in many different ways such as scoring, umpiring, organising home games. It was a great honour and pleasure coaching this team and I would like to thank the association for giving me this opportunity. 24

However, as it turned out the weather gods were kind, with some night time rain and the odd light shower only having a minor effect - on days 4 and 5. Day 1 Monday v- Brisbane SW Metro, 50 overs Monday 2nd January, 2017 Newcastle Presidents 149 def by Metropolitan South West 2/150 (J Van Haren 2/12) A very tough gig to start things off, the op position at DCA strength having been selected from around 100 boys at the start of the season. Winning the toss on a placid turf wicket, we reached a respectable 149 all out off 47 overs. Dan Redpath dug in early with 12 and Cooper Lack a stylish 10, before the gallant efforts of the tail - Alex Nicholson (11), Josh Noy (13), Curtis Skinner (16) and Joel Van Haren with an accomplished 19. Joel was soon back in the action with an early wicket, but as hard as the team tried in the field and Dan Redpath, Sam Bollipo and Jack Hillier stuck to their task with the ball, some fine batting from the Queenslanders saw them home with 4 overs to spare. 25

Day 2 Tuesday v- Central Coast, 45 overs Tuesday 3rd January, 2017 Newcastle Presidents 9/83 def by Central Coast 5/85 (J Van Haren 3/9) A slightly disappointing batting performance and a slow outfield saw us all out for 83 from our overs. Only Dan Redpath (11), Sam Bollipo (19) and Elijah Smith (11 not out) really looked like prospering against a DCA quality attack. However, all negative thoughts were soon put to one side, with a wicket first ball to Joel Van Haren, one to Cooper Lack (1 for 10 off 6 overs) and a run out reducing out opponents to 3 for 31. Good tight bowling by Jack Hillier, Regan Birks and Curtis Skinner kept the pressure on, but Haba and Toohey stood firm with 18 and 29 not out respectively to see their team home, despite two late strikes by the impressive Van Haren (3 for 9 of 7 overs). Day 3 Wednesday v- North Shore, 50 overs Wednesday 4 th January, 2017 Newcastle Presidents 71 (E Smith 20) def by North Shore 9/161 (R Birks 2/16, C skinner 2/22) Playing blue ribbon U13 DCA opponents on a damp turf wicket was always going to be a challenge, but the boys stuck to their task admirably. Bowling first in oppressive, humid conditions, our medium pace bowlers, led by Dan Redpath (ultimately 1 for 15 from 8 overs) hit great areas, taking a wicket each to reduce the much fancied opposition to 4 for 13. Rhys Harvey kept up the pressure with his leg breaks, returning 1 for 11 from 5 overs and was supported well by fellow spinners Dom Stanbridge, Elijah Smith (1 for 9 from 5 overs) and Josh Noy. Regan Birks excelled at the death, ending with 2 for 16 from his 7 overs. North Shore ended up with 161 from their 50 overs, the first time they had been restricted to under 200 runs when batting first this season quite an achievement. Against some genuine pace we found life hard, being reduced to 4 for 5 after 7 overs. But Elijah Smith with 20 showed great courage and found allies in Dan Redpath, Regan Birks and Curtis Skinner to frustrate the opposition (and their coach!) in their quest for an early afternoon return to their motel. Gutsy cricket, and a few extras along the way saw us reach 71 all out from 40 overs. Day 4 Thursday v- Mid North Coast, reduced to 29 overs due to rain PLAY OFF SEMI FINAL - Thursday 5 th January, 2017 Newcastle Presidents 6/75 (D Redpath 31no) def Mid North Coast 68 (R Birks 3/7, R Harvey 3/14) The proud resistance from the day before and a chance to play against better matched opposition seemed to energise our boys. Despite a stop start innings due to rain delays, a very intelligent 31 not out by Dan Redpath and a scampering cameo from Alex Nicholson saw us reach 6 for 75 from our 29 overs. Cooper Lack turned in a miserly opening spell into a strong wind and this was well supported by fine spells of spin bowling by Josh Noy (1 for 11 from 3 overs), Rhys Harvey (3 for 14 off 5 overs) and Jack Hillier (1 for 12 from 4 overs). The boys ground fielding and catching remained solid and two run outs put us in the box seat. It was left to Regan Birks (3 for 7 off 5 overs) to hold his nerve to close things out as we eventually sealed the win by 8 runs. Cue much delight from both playing and parent groups! Day 5 v- Armidale, T20 PLAY OFF FINAL - Friday 6 th January, 2017 Newcastle Presidents 1/51 def Armidale DCA 8/50 (J Noy 2/3) 26

With heavy rain forecast for late morning / afternoon, a T20 was agreed. Batting first Armidale could only amass 8 for 50 from their 20 overs on a slow outfield. Sam Bollipo opened the bowling with his canny off spinners, returning 1 for 4 from his 3 overs, and was backed well by Curtis Skinner (1 for 6 from 3 overs). Dom Stanbridge (1 for 3 from 3 overs) and Joel Van Haren (1 for 1 from 3 overs) kept up the pressure, before Josh Noy struck with 2 quick wickets (2 for 3 from 2 overs). Elijah Smith (23 not out) and Cooper Lack (20 not out) saw the boys home with 6 overs to spare, playing some lovely shots around the wicket to round off a great week in a perfect way. The acting coach would like to acknowledge all of the players and parents for a fun and rewarding week. The support of the parents was invaluable. The boys put in a fantastic effort all week, and particularly showed some impressive resolve against very strong opposition during the early part of the week. Well done to Alex Nicholson and Dom Stanbridge who kept wicket so admirably in hot conditions during the carnival, and to Jack Hillier, who showed maturity beyond his 12 years in steering the team around the paddock on all 5 days a tough job and always with the team and team mates in mind! Finally, to the teams fitness and hydration officer, Nathan Hillier, who so unselfishly gave his time and passed on useful tips and encouragement to all. Written by Andrew Standing, Coach U13 DCA, U13 DCA U13 DCA Team Members: Cooper Southam, Tomas Conaghan, Wil Anson, Matthew Gilmour, Patrick Holding, Orlando Hemara, Ben Plowman, Edward Williams, Daniel Wiliams, Flynn Guest, Ben Standing Callum Stalling. Coach: Andrew Standing. Manager: Alex Myers. After the previous winless season, the Under 13 DCA team set themselves several goals in order to achieve a win in at least one game for the season. The goals included batting out 50 overs and bowling our best 50 overs. To achieve this goal, the team worked hard in the off-season. They trained regularly and indoors when required, to ensure they were well prepared for Season 2015/16. Our first game was against Hawkesbury. They batted first and at 2/143 were in a strong position to post a score in excess of 200. Our bowlers fought back well and limited Hawkesbury to 9/174. This was a total we could chase, but we lost wickets at regular intervals and poor shot selection contributed resulted in being bowled out for 153 in 45 overs. This was a disappointing result as we were scoring at the required run-rate, but could not bat out the overs. Our second game was against eventual competition winners, North Shore. We won the toss and elected to bat. Despite a slow start and against a quality bowling outfit we batted out our 50 overs scoring 9/124. Our bowling could not penetrate the strong North Shore line up and they proceeded to win by 8 wickets with 14 overs to go. Our batters learned some good lessons watching the North Shore players rotate the strike and work out areas where they could score easily to get off strike. Our third game was against Hornsby Ku-ring-gai. Hornsby won the toss and batted. An excellent catch from Orlando in the gully saw us get a couple of early breakthroughs. Some excellent spells of bowling restricted the run rate throughout the innings. Hornsby consolidated the loss of 2 early wickets and at 2/139 was well placed for a late assault. Excellent death bowling restricted the score to 5/166 at the close. The chase began in unsteady fashion to be 3/20 before an excellent partnership got us back into the game. A superb 67 from Cooper got us close, and he deserved to hit the winning runs. However, a late order collapse made the game closer than it should have been. Plenty of nail biting from the stands but the boys held on for their first win with 1 wicket and 1 over to spare. 27

Our fourth game was against St George in really awful hot and windy conditions. After suffering a disappointing loss the previous season, we went into the game with definite plans on how to win. Our bowlers bowled good line and length all game and were rewarded by taking regular wickets and dismissing St George for 114 inside 30 overs. Our batting plan was to limit the penetration of their spin bowlers. The previous season their spinners took the majority of our wickets. At this point in the current season they had the leading wicket taker. Our plan was simple and the boys implemented it very well - limit the number of wickets they took. Their spinners bowled a combined spell of 20 overs 2/47. We finished 4/115 off 44 overs. An excellent result for the boys and 2 wins on the trot. Our last game saw us playing for a spot in the quarter finals against Bankstown. We lost the toss and were sent in by Bankstown and batted out our overs to finish 9/151. This was the fourth game in a row that we had managed to bat out our overs and a marked improvement on the previous season where we did not do it once. Our bowling effort started promising and we had Bankstown 4/35. A steady partnership then put us behind the 8-ball and we were always 2 wickets behind where we needed to be. Bankstown passed our total 8 down with 3 overs to go. The regular season saw us finish with 2 wins and 3 losses. Our preseason goals were achieved. Bat out our overs, bowl our best 50 overs and win at least 1 game. After Christmas the team travelled to Ballina for the carnival. Before the carnival, some of the parents made it clear they wanted all the players to participate equally. We easily won our first two games against Lismore and Hornsby-Ku-ring-gai. Our third game against Tamworth for was a spot in the semifinals. We put in our worst batting display for some time and lost. We then lost our fourth game to Manly before convincingly beating arch nemesis Hawkesbury in the final game to finish 6 th. This result was a little disappointing, but all the players had an enjoyable week of cricket. 30 U13 GIRLS REPRESENTATIVE TEAM Written by Dominic Eve, Manager U13 New Coasters / Mollie Dive Girls Representative Team The U13 New Coasters Team was made up of a combination of girls from the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association and the Central Coast Cricket Association. This season was always going to be a challenge given that the entire roster of the all-conquering team last year moved on to the U15 Margaret Peden competition. Most of the girls had never played rep cricket before and just quietly it was the first rep experience for the coach and manager as well!!!! Despite this however, the girls worked really hard and gelled as a team very quickly and were very supportive of one-another. During October and November the girls played in the U13 Mollie Dive competition against girls from the greater Sydney area and even included a weekend trip to not-so-sunny Canberra! The girls gave every match their all and competed really heard, with each and every one of them seeing significant improvement in their cricketing ability throughout the competition. Whilst they were in with a chance in every game, they couldn t quite crack it for a win unfortunately. It was fantastic to see that the results never dampened their enthusiasm nor their enjoyment of the game. Great life lessons learnt along the way!! During January most of the girls backed-up to play the U11 Ron Arendts boys carnival in Newcastle. A number of the girls were unavailable due to family holiday commitments, so the team was joined by some additional players from last year s team that were still eligible to play. This was a great experience for the girls to be playing alongside girls with a lot more cricketing experience. It was a very enjoyable week and there was immense joy when they won their last two games of the tournament which was fantastic reward for the effort and spirit they have shown throughout the whole season. 33 Written by Cameron Hainsworth, Coach U14 DCA U14 DCA U14 DCA Team Members: Jake Hainsworth, Angus McTaggart, Matthew White, Lachlan Claridge, Caleb Bonomini, Ethan McLachlan, Jeremy Nunan, Jack Hartigan, Jarrod Pitt, Ellis Reynolds, Joshua Mills, Taj Annan. Coach: Cameron Hainsworth. At the start of our season I had high hopes for our team that we would not only be competitive but we would make the finals. Being our 3 rd year in DCA and learning from narrow losses in the previous years it was time for us to deliver. Unfortunately it wasn t the case which was shown by the fact we won only one of our five games. As coach I take full responsibility in our performances and not fulfilling the potential that I know this team has. Once again, which had been the case in the 2 previous seasons our batting individually and in partnerships was terrible and not of a representative level. We had 2 trial games against Inner West Harbour and Illawarra, losing both, therefore our confidence was down. This unfortunately was taken into the competition with our team losing crucial moments in games. As competitive as were able to show in all games, when grinding out when it mattered most we failed to deliver which resulted in us losing the game. We became happy to compete but didn t have a winning at all costs mentality and being happy to lose. Individually this team have some naturally gifted players who underperformed and didn t stand up. I feel this rubbed off on the remainder of the team who not only looked up to them but thought it was acceptable to not apply yourself and dig in when the team needed them to. What has become our strength - bowling the allround performances - was what gave the team the opportunity to win games. Bowlers unselfishly stuck to the game plan even if they didn t agree all the time but consistently bowled to their field restricting the opposition batsmen. In no way do I want to portray a negative report for our team only an honest assessment from a disappointed coach. I have had the pleasure of living the dream with this beautiful group of boys for 3 years. The bonds and spirit that they have formed with each other has united them as one of the greatest teams I have ever been involved with. This is not only a credit to them but more so their parents. Unfortunately it doesn t win games. 34 Higher representative honours were achieved by some of the boys in gaining selection in the Kookaburra Cup side and also the State Challenge. The standard of cricket played at both of those carnivals allowed our boys to compete against teams at a higher level than the DCA competition. They should all be proud of the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field. With the results of the DCA season the team decided they would make amends in the Graeme Malcolm Shield hosted in their home town Newcastle. Unfortunately due to CNSW restrictions players that were selected for the State Challenge were not allowed to play in their hometown carnival. Despite to their disappointment they accepted the decision admirably. Thanks to Sharyn Beck and the NJCA committee who suggested that the available places in the team be taken by representatives from our talented Newcastle girls team. A successful cricket side coached by Tom Anderson and Lyle McGuigan. We brought in 6 girls in - Jasmine Goode, Alison McGrath, Jordan Anderson, Maddison McGugan, Milah Riley, Jessica Hjort and Madeline Case. We also had IDCA train-on player Jonah Murphy come into the team as well. The side performed admirably throughout the carnival, albeit without luck at times. They will all be better for the experience in their cricketing development. U14 DCA were joined by Alethea Graham, Jasmine Goode, Alison McGrath, Jordan Anderson, Maddison McGuigan, Milah Riley, Jessica Hjort, Madeline Case and Jonah Murphy. I would like to thank all the parents, your much appreciated help from providing the wonderful lunches at home games to scoring and everything in between makes my job so much easier. To the unknown commander for his knowledge and warming up the boys each game. Also Tommy and Lyle for helping out with the Graeme Malcolm Shield and the 7 players who came into the team. 34

Credit to the boys - they were able to again play high quality, consistent cricket which resulted in Newcastle winning the U/15 DCA title undefeated. This NSWDCA age group is a very strong competition and the boys are to be congratulated on their outstanding performances during the season. Each player contributed during the year, accepted responsibility and stood up when required. Our plan was to play aggressive, confident cricket with real intent and put our opposition under pressure and the boys did this all season. The boys thrived playing on turf, adapted to different pitches very well and displayed cricket maturity beyond their years. It is very pleasing to see the growth and development in their game management and awareness. This group of young men have great belief in themselves and with each other. Their never give in attitude and mentality stands them well to continue to succeed in the future. Beating Parramatta away in the final (whom hadn t been beaten in the last 2 seasons) was a massive achievement as the boys showed their dominance. There behaviour and sportsmanship on and off the field is outstanding and they represent Newcastle Cricket with pride and respect. 36

Coach: Russel Fowler. Manager: Yusuf Badat. The representative season for the U16s was an extremely successful one; culminating in a convincing grand final win in the U16 CS Watson Shield against the favourites Northern District. The core of this team had played together since the U10 Development squad and they developed a good understanding over the years. This was evident in improvement in the results each year and finally in winning the CS Watson Shield in their final year of DCA cricket. While there were outstanding individual performances in some of the games; everyone contributed at different times when needed. This was a truly magnificent all round team effort: from the players; to the coaching team; to the parents a perfect example of synergism.
