Please enjoy the read. TEN WAYS TO BUILD YOUR CHILD'S SELF-ESTEEM Nurturing your child's self-esteem may seem like a hefty responsibility. After all, a feeling of self-worth lays the foundation for your child's future as he sets out to try new things on his own. Self-esteem comes from having a sense of belonging, believing that we're capable, and knowing our contributions are valued and worthwhile. Your goal as a parent is to ensure that your child develops pride and self-respectin himself and in his cultural roots as well as faith in his ability to handle life's challenges. Here are ten simple strategies to help boost your child's self-esteem: Give unconditional love. A child's self-esteem flourishes with the kind of nostrings-attached devotion that says, "I love you, no matter who you are or what you do." Pay attention. Carve out time to give your child your undivided attention. Teach limits. Establish a few reasonable, consistent rules for your child. Support healthy risks. Encourage your child to explore something new, such as trying a different food, making a new friend, or riding a skateboard. So let your child safely experiment, and resist the urge to intervene. Let mistakes happen. The flip side, of course, of having choices and taking risks is that sometimes your child is bound to make mistakes. These are valuable lessons for your child's confidence. Celebrate the positive. Everyone responds well to encouragement, Listen well. If your child needs to talk, stop and listen to what she has to say. Resist comparisons. Comparisons just remind your child of where he struggles in a way that fosters shame. Offer empathy and redirect inaccurate beliefs. If your child compares himself unfavourably to his siblings or peers, show him empathy and then emphasize one of his strengths. Provide encouragement. Every child needs the kind of support from loved ones that signals, "I believe in you. I see your effort. Keep going!"
2 R o c k a r o u n d t h e W o r l d At our recent Pre-preparatory School Concert, our Little Glens travelled around the world, visiting different countries as part of the Rock around the World theme. The costumes and stage were spectacular, and the children loved performing to some old and new hits. We held our International Food Evening in the gardens at the NG Church hall, and the weather and atmosphere around the food stalls was enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone for their assistance and support in making this evening out of this world. G r a d e 1 M C e l e b r a t i n g P i n k C i v v i e s D a y i n S t y l e

5 N i c k e l o d e o n G e n i u s On 20 October a team composed of Derick Hill (Grade 9), Nicole van Helsdingen (Grade 6) and her brother, Matthew van Helsdingen (Grade 8, York High), took part in the regional finals of Nickelodeon Genius, a Maths and science quiz for year olds. The team won a R ABSA MegaU bank account as well as a donation from Cambridge Publishing of R worth of books for their schools. The quiz was held at the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town and 19 competing teams took part. The team progressed through the competition where they had to face up against G r a d e 8 E n v i r o S p r i n g D a y

T h e G K C S o n g T h e G W H b a n d It is that time of the year again and the Grade 10s are preparing to go on an adventure they will never forget. While on the GKC in 2015, Aubrey Marais, Julia Kohler and Jayden Maree wrote a song that captured what the GKC meant to them. The GWH band decided to record this song to get everyone into the spirit of the GKC. We hope you love it as much as we do! Mr C Boshoff

8 S p o r t R e s u l t s CRICKET U15 Stand tall The u15 cricket team played in the u15 Super League and won two of their three opening matches. We played against York, and what good sportsmanship was shown by both schools! In the first match Glenwood won by 4 wickets against a determined Bridgton HUB team from Oudtshoorn. York hosted the game, won the toss and elected to bat first. They quickly reached 134/2 after 25 overs and a well-deserved drinks break. After the break, wickets tumbled quickly and they were all out for 181. After lunch it was Glenwood s turn to face the bowling. The batting impressed with a partnership of 140 runs, and a first six ever from Callie Swanevelder who scored 69 runs and Brett Wagner with 42 runs. Glenwood won the game with 5 wickets. Congratulations are in order to these rising stars of Glenwood cricket. 1 st Team Glenwood 1st Cricket Team had a convincing win over York the weekend of 15 October with Ruan Moolman who achieved 100 runs, supported by Jean du Plessis, that also celebrated yet another 50. GOLF Jasmine Furstenburg took part in the SA Kids Golf tournament in Cape Town and achieved a first place. In the boys and girls U9-10 division she was able to beat the rest of the field by 20 shots! SAILING Three of our young sailors took part in the Eastern Cape Provincial championships. James Vonk achieved an 8 th place and Sean Vonk achieved a 13 th place in the Oppie class. Marc Franklin achieved a 9 th place in the Terra Sport class. Georgou Divaris competed at the Northern Provincial Grand Slam at the Vaal Dam on the 17/18 September. He participated against SA Olympian Stefan Marcia and came first. What an achievement, Georgou!
9 S p o r t R e s u l t s ( c o n t. ) SWIMMING These Glenwood House swimmers achieved exceptional results at the recent Eden short course champs. They are Hannah Murray, Luard Elstadt, Taylin Lincow and Tammy Greenwood, who was also the Junior Victrix Ludorum at this gala. Naledi Manyube was also invited to an International training camp in Mauritius. She reached the semifinals and achieved a 3 rd place overall. In the doubles she teamed up with a player from Nigeria to win this title! TENNIS (cont.) Cuan Western and his tennis playing partner, Ile Lategan won the mixed doubles U10 in the Boland TSA series. Cuan also placed 2 nd in the Rondebosch tournament, boys U10 doubles. TENNIS Our brilliant young tennis star, Naledi Manyube has again achieved amazing results on the tennis court. She participated in the TSA Masters in Stellenbosch, to which the top 16 players in the country for each age group were invited. Naledi reached the finals and became the runner up in the U12 division. Damien Nezar competed at the SA Junior Tennis Masters in Strand from 6-9 October 2016 an invitation-only event which sees the Top 16 juniors in South Africa per age group (u12, u14, u16, u18) compete for Tennis South Africa s biggest title. In the Boys u14, Damien knocked out the no. 2 seed (from Gauteng) in straight sets in the semi-finals. In the finals Damien faced the no. 1 seed (also from Gauteng) losing narrowly in a nail-biting 3 hour final amongst an excited crowd of spectators, coaches and players from across the country. The final was a proud occasion for Glenwood, Eden Province, and both Damien and Naledi s tennis coach Tielman (Totally Tennis Academy), as Naledi Manyube (gr.6) reached the girls u12 final and was playing on the court next to Damien. Naledi also came close to taking the title but eventually lost in a very closely contested 3 set final against the number 3 seed (from Boland).
10 S p o r t R e s u l t s ( c o n t. ) WATERPOLO Glenwood House is proud of our young water polo players who were selected to represent SWD at the National tournament in Durban during December. They are Jake Mentz, Markos Divaris, Richard Leach, Travis Skorpen, Oliver Hurt and Hannah Murray. The Glenwood House under 19 boys water polo team attended the annual Pearson High School Stayers Tournament from October Thursday 13 October consisted of a one-day knockout event. Glenwood House won the Plate final. Stirling High School won the Cup final against Grey College 1sts. Results for Thursday were as follows: Pearson Stayers Day 1 Knockout Beat Queens College 9-0 Lost against Pearson 1 st 2-9 Beat Pearson 2nds 8-2 Beat Woodridge 7-4 Beat Grey College Bloemfontein 5-5 (6-5 on penalties) Friday and Saturday sixteen teams competed in the Stayers Tournament. Glenwood House had the following results in the Pool D. Stayers Tournament Day 2 Pool matches: Bt Woodridge 2-8 Bt Grey bloem 2nd. 9-4 Pearson 1st Lost 1-10 (0-5 halftime) Playoffs: Bt Pearson 2nds. 8-2 Lost to St Andrews College 1st 3-10 quarter finals at 20:00 on Friday evening Lost to Grey 1sts 3-4 (HT 1-2) Drew vs Grey College 2nds 4-4 and won on penalties to end 7th overall behind schools such as SAC, Sterling, Selborne, Pearson. Kingswood College finished 9th and York 12th. St Andrews beat Stirling 8-6 in the final, while our final tally was 8 wins out of 12 matches for the weekend. Congratulations to, Áedán Cumming, Rick Marriott-Dodington and Reece Crankshaw for earning man of the match awards during the tournament. Special thanks to coach Guy Bird for sacrificing his voice due to enthusiastic instructions shouted from the side lines all weekend. The Senior Water Polo girls travelled to East London over the weekend 13 to 16 October to take part in the Clarendon Stayers Tournament. Congratulations to the girls who finished 6 th out of 10, despite having 5 juniors in the side. Our U13 water polo team travelled to Cape Town to participate in the Cannons Creek tournament. This is the biggest U13 tournament in the Western Cape and therefore the polo played here is of a very high standard. As it was our first time to participate we were placed in pool B. After a nervous start our players soon found their rhythm and due to the high standard upped their own game. Our boys worked very hard to reach the finals and came up against a regional club team with much talent and skill. We were absolutely delighted with our silver medals and it was just reward for two days of intense polo. Furthermore, our team was also delighted with the performance of our keeper, Adriaan Hiemstra who was awarded the best keeper for our section. Richard Leach, our captain lead from the front and scored an amazing 32 goals in the tournament! We keenly look forward to this tournament next year and are excited about the growth of this dynamic sport.
