Students have their medical and excursion permission forms to return ASAP. I invite those in our College community to contact me directly with ideas they may have regarding the educational component of the tour. Of course, the significance of such an important place to Indigenous Australians is something that has been very well planned for the tour at this point but in saying so suggestions are always welcome. Congratulations to Mrs Wetherbee and the boys involved in the Herald Sun Country Cup match last Wednesday night here in Euroa. The team, very capably led by Ryan Jennings, were able to pinch a last gasp win off the boot of Luke Malloch. This puts the school into the next round against Goulburn Valley Grammar and Nathalia Secondary College. These games will again take place in Euroa (Memorial Oval) from 4pm through to 6:30pm on Tuesday 18 th June. Families and school community members are encouraged to get along and support the team.
2 Our uniform blitz this week has, as its main purpose, to help families bring their attention to the College Uniform Policy and the requirement of each student to be in school uniform at all times. Families are able to be supported here by contacting our College Assistant Principal, Mr Kevin Bott, or the relevant Year Level Coordinator, and outlining their current challenges/circumstances. Year 7 Laura Gregory gregory.laura.l@edumail.vic.gov.au Year 8 Kim Saxon saxon.kimberley.r@edumail.vic.gov.au Year 9 Paul Murray murray.paul.d@edumail.vic.gov.au Year 10 Phil Smith smith.philip.j@edumail.vic.gov.au Year 11/12 Marion Wetherbee wetherbee.marion.g@edumail.vic.gov.au As stated previously, we have in place, due to the fantastic help of a couple of our parents (Mrs Gayle Van Den Berghe and Mrs Claire Douglas), a second hand uniform facility whereby uniform can be given to the College by families willing to donate clothing from students who have graduated or left the College or indeed have grown out of their clothes. If you are in this position with unwanted, yet functional school uniform, sitting in the cupboard please do not hesitate to hand it in at the General Office. Many families in our community will thank you. Well done to the Creighton team in winning annual House Cross Country last week. This event, around the Apex walking track here in Euroa, involved many students on what was indeed a perfect day for an enjoyable run! Mrs Mackrell and Mr Schultz ought to be congratulated for their organization here with many students already having bought back their permission forms for the interschool event next week. I invite your feedback watson.scott.a@edumail.vic.gov.au Scott Watson Principal Year 8 SAM (Shepparton Art Museum) Excursion On Thursday 23 rd May, students from 8K, 8C and Year8 L.O.T.E. class attended the SAM (Shepparton Art Museum). The exhibition was on The Golden Age of Colour prints. This exhibition was about Japanese wood-block prints which were made during 18 th century, when Japan almost completely closed the country to the rest of world. When we arrived, we split into two groups. One group attended a calligraphy workshop while the others looked at the prints. The main types of prints were of actors and beautiful women. At the calligraphy workshop, we wrote some Japanese letters using a special brush and ink. The exhibition was great and we learnt lots of different things about Japanese history and art of wood-block prints.year 8 Sarah Nolan and Allana Welsh Uniform Order forms may be left at the office at any time with payment, an orders cannot be processed without payment. 3 CROSS COUNTRY The ESC Cross Country was held last Tuesday in what turned out to be a glorious day for running, or strolling around the Apex Track. 200 students from year 7 to 12 signed up for the event and ventured down to the track straight after recess. The students waited patiently for their age group s race to begin, performing last minute stretches and shoe tying rituals. Mr Watson was on the start line and set the 13 and 14 year old girls off for the first event on the morning. The year 7 s have been familiarising themselves with the track over the past few weeks in PE, and keen to set a frantic pace. Jake Penman, Nick Panuccio, Remy Brew, Andrew Crosbie and John Bennett were first on the scene at the Rockies, but it became a two horse race back up the hill to the Caravan Park with A. Crosbie getting over the line two seconds ahead of J. Penman. Tamara Smith had opened up a large gap by the time her race reached the bridge. But an incorrect right turn at Albuquerque saw her end up way off course and Julia Finnigan closed the gap and beat her to the line by 1 second! Kayne Davidson was in the zone and was giving Kirkland a handy advantage, as Jack Downie, David Simonis and Andrew Dowling competed for the remaining places on the podium. K. Davidson cruised in 13:14 for the second fastest time of the day. Long Distance specialist Britney White again coasted through this first round completing her 3km journey in just over 15 minutes and easily took out first place for Forlonge for the 14 year old girls. She finished ahead of her teammates Grace Arnold and Ralee Jagar whom earned much needed points for yellow in their quest for Cross Country Mantle. In the closest contested race of the day the 15 year old boys jostled for prime position as they crossed the one lane bridge. Oliver Aitken, Jack Broughton, Tom Burke, Zac Clarke, Curtis Hoare, Cam Kirby and Jack McKernan were all in the mix and set off up the hill for the return journey. The Creighton team of Burke, Aitken, Broughton, McKernan and Hoare were using strategies usually reserved for the Tour de France and sprinted home together to claim the 5 top positions respectively. Tanneile Rodger has dominated the 15 year old girls 3km for the last couple of years, but the arrival Mahony Fothergill at the start of the year has put a stop to that. Mahony has gone three for three in each of these House Team events after excellent results in the Athletics and Swimming Carnivals. Brooke Wells has been just as successful and did the job easily in the 16 year old girls. The 16 to 20 year old boys needed to cover 5000m in order to qualify themselves a spot on the school team, although some did have the option to run 3km. Being the last to go meant that they focused on chasing down the age groups that had left 5 minutes prior to themselves. By the time they reached the Rockies Bridge, they had already passed the walkers from the 14 and 15 year old age groups, but such was the competitiveness of these runners, only 30 seconds separated the top 8 runners at this point. Felix Arnold found his feet had grown since he purchased new runners and decided to remove them for the remainder of the journey, while fellow 17 year old Jake Smith found that running in pants was getting to be too hot. Luckily he kept them on, and decided to run faster with 16 year old Kyle Andrews believing that running for a shorter time would be beneficial to him. The strategy worked and he came home in 18:40min, behind Kyle s 18:28. Jacob Hogg wasn t far off the pace finishing a further 30 seconds back.
4 HERALD SUN CUP FOOTBALL Last Wednesday the First Round of the Herald Sun Cup took place at the Memorial Oval under lights. Coach Dimmer Wetherbee and Team Manager Bott were the personnel on the sidelines as the Pies took to the field. The boys were hard at the ball early, but the greasy conditions made controlling the ball very difficult. Euroa were turning the ball over regularly and the Dowell boys were working overtime in defence trying to stop the Broadford team from scoring. Eventually, the onslaught opened a gap in the Pies defence and Broadford kicked the first goal of the game. Euroa won the next clearance, but the ball made it back into their back line for Broadford s second. Alex Duff was taking chances running the ball out of defence giving the forwards an opportunity. Late in the term, Euroa Captain Ryan Jennings pegged one back and went into the quarter time break down to Coach Dimmer gave the boys a rev up and her Team Manger made some subtle changes to the line up. The effects were immediate with Euroa winning plenty of the ball. Again their skills in the damp and slippery conditions were their undoing and Broadford were getting plenty of shots at goal. Jarryd Shepherd was fearless up forward and Luke Malloch was creating plenty of run with Jarmyn Tremellen in great support. Euroa finally were rewarded for their hard work, and Curtis Hobbs snagged a goal to bring the difference back to a point. But with a minute to go before half time Broadford broke clear and ran into an easy goal to extend their lead to 7 points at the main break. Euroa Broadford The Broadford boys jumped out of the blocks at the start of the third and kicked the first goal. The Euroa team were tackling like wolves and started to create turnovers left right and centre. Luke Birch was right in the thick of things picking up 4 disposals in 60 seconds of play. Pete McKay was deadly on his left foot hitting up targets. Curtis Hobbs was doing a number on his defender and soon Euroa were rewarded for their efforts and a goal was produced. Moments later Euroa won a free kick 10m out on a slight angle and C. Hobbs put through his second. All of a sudden the Pies were just a point down. Euroa won the ball out of the centre and R. Jennings took a mark 80m from home out on the wing. With not much on, he took on the man on the mark, but with defenders closing in quickly, Jendo hit the deck trying to dodge them on the slippery surface. The ball rebounded down the other end and Broadford s big full forward drilled home a goal from 50m. A win out of the centre and three quick running passes left other Broadford player running into and open goal to create the biggest margin of the night as the three quarter siren rang. Euroa , Broadford Team Manager Bott was pulling some final moves on the whiteboard at three quarter time huddle and a Coach Wetherbee reminded the boys to keep their heads and take their time in pegging back the deficit. Captain Jennings stepped up early and was a working well with the other year 12 s of P. McKay, Linc McKernan, Alex Duff, and Nick Brodie as they hit up targets as they worked the ball into attack which resulted in a much needed first goal for Euroa. Ryley Bjorksten was chopping off deliveries at half back and the Pies were looking dangerous once more. Just as Euroa were moving the pill around looking for an avenue to score, the ball slipped out and Broadford kicked long into attack, trying to create room for a scrumming goal. Pat Dowell was too quick for that, but the ball got trapped in Broadford s forward line dangerously close to goal, but they were unable to capitalise. The pies launched the ball out of defence and Captain Jennings took a grab 30m out on a 45 degree angle. He had no trouble slotting it through the big sticks to get Euroa back within two. Euroa again won the ball out of the centre and worked the ball down the wing into a flood of Broadford bodies. A quick transfer across the middle opened up some space for L. Malloch who used a well timed shepherd from Tom Birch and his unmatched speed to get by a couple of defenders and floated the ball through for 6 points. With a little under a minute remaining, some clean possessions from Cam Frost and R. Jennings ran the time off the clock. A great come from behind win by the Euroa Boys who celebrated with the Richmond tune. The next Round is scheduled on Tuesday the 18 th of June with 3 matches programmed to begin at 4pm. We look forward to some spectators dropping by to help cheer on the Pies against Nathalia and Shepparton and enjoy in sausage sizzle. FINAL SCORES Euroa Broadford
