CLAREMONT SCHOOL Weekly Newsletter Monday 25th September 2017 RATED OUTSTANDING IN ALL AREAS BY OFSTED INSIDE THIS ISSUE Prep News... 2 Claremont School GCSE Results 2017: 31% A*/A Dear Parent, Today we have the final Cheese and Wine evening of this half term. It has been a wonderful opportunity for new and existing parents to meet each other, and for the staff to speak informally to parents. This evening we will be welcoming the parents of Pre-Prep and pre-school children and I look forward to seeing many of you there from 7pm. We are excited about Tuesday s European Day of Languages, which we are celebrating this year. Madame/Señora Osborne has organised a wide range of activities and European treats for the children. Pupils are encouraged to wear a European country / flag colour-themed accessory. For example, a small flag badge, an appropriately-coloured hair tie, a beret for example to represent France, or a Spanish fan for Spain. Years 7 and 8 are invited to a Languages at Work workshop / drop in information session to find out how they can use languages in the future. Continuing on the linguistic theme, 5H are going off to la Maison Claremont on Thursday morning, returning on Saturday afternoon. Madame Hood has organised an exciting programme, including a visit to Nausicaá, a trip to a typical French market and a bowling evening. I am sure that the pupils will enjoy the opportunities they will have to speak French, particularly when they go to the boulangerie to buy breakfast: nothing encourages fluency quite as much as the sight of freshly-baked French pastries, still warm from the oven! 5S will be visiting St Omer a week later. We are looking forward to holding our Open Mornings on Friday 6 th and Saturday 7 th October. Many thanks, in advance, to all of the pupils who support the school so wholeheartedly. 2 5H really enjoyed dressing up for Roald Dahl Dahlicious Dress Up day! Tom and Xander part of the Under 14s Heathfield Park Cricket Club were awarded under 14s Champions in the East Sussex Area Cricket Association League. Faced with the above question, Year 5 made presentations to the rest of the class about the difference between solids, liquids and gases. Year 5 will use this knowledge to help them understand about changing states of matter.

Here are just some things to look out for and in which to take part: Try to find your European cadeau around the school. Complete the language quiz on google classrooms for a chance to win a prize. Enjoy the special European themed lunch menu. Try to speak as many different languages as possible, even if it is Hello. A European Day of Languages form time. Year 7s and 8s are invited to a Languages at Work workshop / drop in information session to find out how you can use your languages in the future with Mme / Señora Osborne. Your form tutor will confirm timings / room. French café break time treats for pupils and staff. Wear a European Country themed coloured accessory for the day (School uniform must still be worn!) Enjoy!

Freddie took part in the Petley Wood NSEA school show jumping. Freddie was the only pupil from the Prep school who took part. Well done Freddie. After the original session was postponed, the Year 7 Bushcraft bonding session took place this week. Pupils worked in teams to 'rescue' each other from floods, break out of jail and much more...the pupils strengthened friendships and got to know others' they had never spoken to before. The fire building was particularly popular as was the food cooked on the camp fire.

Myself and the rest of the FOCS Committee are pleased to inform you, The Senior School have just installed a new Projector in their theatre which has been funded by FOCS. I am sure all the students will greatly benefit from this for years to come. Tricia Iversen Chair Year 8 pupils carried out an eye dissection this week. They have been studying the refraction of light through matter of different densities. Several pupils have aspirations to be doctors, vets and paramedics and wanted to find out how light travels through the eye. The Senior School Uniform Shop will be open every Monday afternoon from 4:30-5:30pm Woodland Friendship Bracelets Stalking Games Rope Course Year 3 enjoying Forest School. Home for Badger!

U11As Hockey v Ashford Prep The U11As had a great start to the season with victory over Ashford Prep School. Despite going behind to an early goal in the first 10 minutes of the game, Claremont showed great determination and fought back to take a 3-2 lead at half time thanks to goals from Emma P (2) and Rosie B. Claremont dominated in the second half and produced some great hockey. Emma P slotted home her third goal of the game to complete her hat-trick and Lizzie S scored in the final few minutes securing a 5-2 win for Claremont. Well played girls, a great result! Player of the Match ( chosen by Ashford ): Emma P. Player of the Match ( chosen by Miss. Hurst ): Lilli H. 1st XI Football Claremont 1-3 Dulwich The first team had their first game last week, against a very strong Dulwich side. Early in the game neither side took control of the game as both sides worked tirelessly to get the ball back. However, Claremont went 1-0 down after 10 mins. Just before half time Ander L-G scored the equaliser with a well taken first time shot. Second half Claremont started brightly and had a goal ruled out for off-side. Claremont stood firm with Man of the Match Freddie S making several top saves. Then with time almost up, two late goals were conceded, however the boys played with great effort and determination. Lots of positives and a good platform to work from. Colts Vs St Andrews Colts A performed well in a 6-4 win over St Andrews. We created a lot of chances, Samie H became the first player to score a hatrick this term, Shanazar scored a brace and Luca Rose finished from close range. We did allow them to score 4 successive goals, so we need to tighten up defensively and resolve our frailties. Shanazar was the man of the match. Colts B played some excellent football on a small pitch. The boys passed and moved the ball well we were only prevented from scoring more goals by an outstanding performance from the St Andrews keeper. Gonzalo and Louis were our goal scorers in a 2-1 win. U13 Football House Matches Corinth 4-0 Athens Corinth started brightly as they scored 2 goals before half time through a Cohen L header and Marley N weaving through to score. Freddie S tried hard in goal and Athens were missing a few key players. However 2 further goals from Oguzhan and Artem against a valiant effort from Athens. Athens 0-4 Sparta Sparta inflicted more misery on Athens with the exact same score line. Goals scored from Alfie S and James B before half time. However Athens tried to play football and got into some good scoring opportunities only to be thwarted time and again by a strong Sparta defence. Again though they were stretched at the back and Ogom U scoring a further 2 goals. Sparta 4-0 Corinth The winners of this game would go on to be crowed House Champions 2017 and Sparta came out fully determined for the win as Frank T, Ned P, Barney M, and Ogom U all got on the scoresheet. Corinth tried hard, being driven forward by Will de Wilde but couldn't quite break through. Player for Athens - Freddie Saunders Player for Corinth - Will de Wilde Player for Sparta - Lucas de Oliveira Well done to everyone involved who made it an enjoyable afternoon where they all took it very seriously and some excellent football was played throughout. U9 Netball v St. Andrew s The U9's played a closely contested game against St. Andrew s to kick off the netball season. Claremont took an early lead and had most of the possession in the first quarter. St. Andrew s fought back and had a one goal lead going into the final quarter. There was little to separate the two teams but Claremont unfortunately missed a couple of good scoring opportunities allowing St. Andrew s to maintain their narrow lead. An encouraging start from all the girls involved. Final score: Claremont 6; St. Andrew s 8. Player of the Match: Esme P.

Y3 Netball v St Andrew s The Y3 girls were all in action this week playing in their first ever netball match in the Claremont colours. They did themselves and the school proud, playing some lovely netball at times. We made up two teams and I am delighted to report that they both won. (3-0 and 1-0) The 'best bit' was of course the sausage and chips match tea! (Pictured) Miss Holmes Swimming Report - Years 5, 6, 7 & 8 Girls Claremont Bedes First gala of the term saw our Year 5, 6, 7 & 8 go over to Bede s, and what a fantastic gala it was. It was very exciting throughout. The Year 5's got the better of their Bedes counterparts. Amelie F swimming up from Year 4 winning all her races. Tess R, Olivia W, Liberty B-M, and Georgia C making up a really strong squad. The Year 6's were low in numbers with only Galina B and Emma P representing the team and swimming more races than normal. The Year 7's look like having a strong year in the pool as they came out on top with Eve S, Saffron A, Tarran B-D, Issy W, Nancy M, and Issy W making up a solid group of swimmers. Ella F, who has joined the team this year, also looks like a great addition to the squads. Finally the Year 8's have a strong quartet of swimmers with Issy M, Tallulah S and newly appointed Natalia R and Olivia H. Breakdown of the results were as follows: CL BE Year Year Year Year

Year 2 enjoying Dahlicious Dress Up Day! Mollie, in Year 2, did some extra homework. Reception Newton enjoying Dahlicious Dress Up Day! Penny s underwater landscape. Edward completed the 'beach clean' this weekend - and picked up 251 pieces of litter! Year 2 drew themselves as Victorian children. Iona and Edward S are starting to form beautiful cursive writing. Get well soon Kira, who broke her arm at the weekend.

Monday: Foxes really love joining in with Badgers for PE with Miss Flanigan - they all loved creating different movements around the hall such as running, jumping, crawling and skipping. Tuesday: All the Foxes really enjoyed creating their very own drawing using a 'Bee Bot'...We loved buzzing all over the page. Wednesday: We loved our trip to Forest School; We were on the hunt for a Bog Baby; if you see one could someone please let Miss Greenfields know, thank you. Thursday: All our lovely Foxes really enjoyed baking their very own bog baby muffin (Blueberry Muffin)... There was a lot of mixing to be done! Friday: Foxes enjoyed our jungle drum walk today - they all loved banging on anything and everything they could touch and see... We made so much noise, we had our own jungle band! We loved dancing to the music we made. The Badgers have had great fun this week, extending off last weeks idea of colour mixing; using a salad spinner to help us mix colours together. In addition to this we have also been exploring many different subjects through the story 'The Bog Baby' which has become a new class favourite! We have made some scrumptious blueberry cupcakes, created our own Bog Babies and been on a 'Bog Baby Hunt', its safe to say we have gone Bog Baby mad!

The Hedgehogs have shown lots of kindness towards their friends. They have enjoyed games of sharing and taking turns, looking at books and playing as a group. We have done lots of art work so look out for child's work around the room. This week in Robins we have been looking at the colour green and have made some lovely creative pictures to display in our room. We have also loved playing in our new mud kitchen outside. Later this week we will be making some lovely cheese and chive swirls. Robins also had a lovely time playing with the small world farm set, they especially had fun putting all the animals in the barn and did so well working together to achieve this.

This week, the Ducklings have been busy wellie boot printing and making spider webs for their Incy, Wincy display. They have also enjoyed oat play and going for a nature walk with the Butterflies. The Butterflies have had lots of fun, pine-cone printing and using the leaves from our walk, to make their hedgehogs. We have also enjoyed outdoor play with the sand and on the soft play. Please could all the Butterfly children bring in photos of their family/pets for our family board? Thank you. This week we have been looking at harvest and the changing weather. The children have created beautiful raindrop pictures, happy scarecrows for our farm display and created music that sounds like the wind and leaves falling.

The first game of the season, for the U14 girls, saw them travel to Eastbourne College. This was the first time many of the girls have played on a full size astro, which is almost three times the length they have been used to at their Prep schools. Apart from the technical elements, we have been working on team tactics; when we have the ball and when we do not. The team could not have responded any better than the way they did. At times they played some free flowing hockey by passing the ball from one end to the other. A debut for Amelia C, in goal, who kept a clean sheet and made a valuable save at 0-0. The match was a tight affair but the dead lock was broken by Cathryn G with a roll shot at goal. The second was a team goal with Elizabeth D, winning the ball before passing to Tippi W, who moved the ball to Jemmima L and a brake from midfield, finishing with a shot at goal before Maryisa D guided the ball home past the goal keeper. The girls took the game 2-0 and Julia M was voted player of the match. The victory was a team performance and should give the girls confidence going into next weeks match. Well done. Mr Patel The first game of the season was welcomed by the squad, who have worked hard in the first few weeks. Battle Abbey came with a small squad but a very competitive one. The boy s found their feet early and stuck to the game-plan, but their early chances did not come to fruition. However, at half time the boys were up by six points, once they started making their shots. Going into the last quarter the team was up by twelve points and beginning to put the plans into action that we had worked on in training. However, complacency set in and this let Battle come within five points of Claremont. A time was called and a stern team talk was given to the boys, they responded very well and went back to the game plan to come away with a victory. Well done.
