CLAREMONT SCHOOL Weekly Newsletter Monday 19th June 2017 RATED OUTSTANDING IN ALL AREAS BY OFSTED INSIDE THIS ISSUE Claremont School GCSE Results 2016: 47% A*/A Dear Parent, We were delighted to welcome Mrs Smalldon back to tell us all about her trek on the Great Wall of China, in aid of CHECT. While we learnt that the Wall is 12,000 miles long, happily Mrs Smalldon did not have to trek the entire distance, and there were some breath-taking photographs of vertiginous stairways up to remote guard posts, and some parts of the wall that are 2,700 years old. Mrs Smalldon raised a significant sum and the school is really pleased to continue to support her charity, the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust. The Wacky Fun Run is the brainchild of Matthew Brand, and together with the Year 7 organising team, they have all been very busy. In support of the Head of Drama, Alex Jackson, they are raising money for Cancer Research on the last day of term. On their JustGiving page, it states: Our beloved Ms Jackson is a positive, exuberant person with a real zest for life, so it is fitting that each participant will wear a suitably colourful and, hopefully, eccentric outfit. You are invited to sponsor a pupil (or teacher!) who is participating in the event. For more information, please go to: claremontwackyrun. The Year 8 pupils have returned from their nine day trip to the South of France full of smiles and exciting anecdotes. It really seems that all the children really enjoyed themselves which was evident in the daily photographs and updates, courtesy of Michael Cook. A huge thank you to Mr Cook for organising the trip, and to the other members of staff, who accompanied the children: it was certainly an extremely active and memorable holiday. In other important news, the Year 8s will receive their Common Entrance results today. Last Friday, we appointed our first group of Peer Listeners, a new responsibility role for next year s Year 8 pupils, which will see them attached to a year group to support our pupils. Amelie Spurway-Bishop, Lucinda Barber, Tami Akindele, James Bourne, Xander Samuel and Elliot Wilson have all been appointed to this important role. Elsewhere in the school, our inaugural Shakespeare Week has seen the Year 6 pupils returning to Elizabethan and Jacobean England in all of their lessons. We have been learning what an exciting and subversive place the theatre was in Shakespeare s time. On Wednesday, we are celebrating the Badgers, Foxes & Kingfishers Graduation followed by drinks and nibbles for our 2017 Reception starters. The week concludes with Speech Day, which I am hoping will be a little cooler than today! I look forward to seeing many of you there, on Saturday morning. 2 We have appointed our prefects for next year. All the children went through a selection process whereby they had a job description and person specification and the pupils had to provide referees, as well as a cover letter and application form. As a result, the pupils were able to learn some important life skills during the application process. We will not appoint our Head and Deputy Head Boys and Girls until the new academic year, when we have had the opportunity to assess how the prefects are approaching their roles. A reminder to all parents that there is still unclaimed money from the sale of uniform from the last 2-3 terms. Please would you collect from the following sites as soon as possible: Aubrey and Honor were models for a current photographic exhibition inspired by Fairy Stories called Not so Grimm Tales. These tales from the 19th century have been brought up to date through the use of photography and digital artistry. For Prep School Uniform Sales From the uniform shop either on Monday or Tuesday mornings between 8:15 9:15. For Senior School Uniform Sales An has been sent out to relevant parents requesting that either they or their children attend the Senior School office to collect & sign for the payment. We will be announcing when the school shop will be opening during the summer before the end of term. Year 5 during exam week, working hard. Moxy Child, a professional studio photographer and digital artist has created images with her own interpretation of these well-known tales. This selling exhibition is part of the South East Open Studio Scheme and is open from Friday 9th June until Saturday 24th June 2017 (including Sundays), Monday to Friday 10:30am 5pm and Saturdays 10:30am 1pm. There will be photography demonstrations on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Prices of works start at 3 for cards. The exhibition will be held in the studio created in the 19 th century barns of Vinehall Farm in Unit 52, Vinehall Business Centre, Vinehall Road, Mountfield, Robertsbridge, East Sussex, TN32 5JW. Galina was awarded 3 golds and 4 silvers at the 1066 Swimming Club awards night at the weekend. The awards are for fastest times in the age group. A study carried out by an anti-bullying charity found that 57% of the young people it surveyed had experienced bullying online when playing games. In addition, 22% said they had stopped playing a game as a result. Ditch the Label surveyed around 2,500 young members of the virtual hotel platform Habbo, aged between 12 and 25. Chief executive Liam Hackett said his charity was launching a global campaign to try to tackle the problem. "Bullying within online gaming environments is a real issue," he said. The report also found: * 47% of those surveyed said they had been threatened in an online game * 38% said they had been hacked within a game * 74% said they would like the issue to be taken more seriously * 29% said bullying and trolling did not affect their enjoyment of online games BBC News

Athletics Years 3, 4, & 5 Athletics Competition at Dulwich Prep School Some of our youngest athletes, in the main school, went and competed at Dulwich Prep School, in what proved a really fun afternoon. Dulwich, St Ronan s, Schools at Somerhill and Claremont battled it out on the track. Our runners gave a tremendous amount of effort throughout. Those selected were chosen from their standout performances on Sports Day, in events ranging from 800m, 300m, 60m, 80m, 100m and 200m races and Relays. Special mention goes to Harvey Wheeler who won both his 80m and 200m race. Also to Amelia Barrett who came 2nd in the 100m sprint and 3rd in the 200m race. The most exciting races, however, had to be the Year 3 and 4 relays where they ran 60m or 80m depending on the age group, towards their partner with a baton. We were the only school throughout every relay event that not to drop the baton at the changeover! An outstanding effort amongst the next level of competition. Some of our Year 4 & 5s will be going to Hurstpierpoint and we wish them the best of luck, along with our Year 6, 7, & 8 athletes who compete at Crawley. Swimming Dicker Shield Swimming Gala The annual Dicker Shield swimming gala took place over at Bede s Senior on Thursday afternoon. We were lacking our Year 8s due to the leavers trip and unfortunately a few of our Year 7s. Which meant our Year 6s, along with Cohen L and Natalia R, represented the school to such a high standard of swimming. Cohen and Natalia swam 2 individual events each brilliantly over 2 lengths. They swam any stroke without fuss and did a tremendous job for the school. Our Year 6 pupils have been dominating in the pool all season, and had it just been a year 6 competition would have won overall, however, it was scored across all 3 age groups. We were never quite in contention for the overall award as we couldn't field a Year 8 team and had a depleted Year 7 team! Our Year 6 girls who have been fantastic all season with Evie S, Hattie H, Eve S, Saffron A and Tarran B-D easily matched or outmatched their opponents this year. Evie S winning the 25m Breaststroke, Hattie came 2nd in the 25m Freestyle, Saffron A 2nd in the 25m Backstroke and Eve S 2nd in the 25m Butterfly. The girls also finished 2nd in both the Medley and Freestyle relays. The boys can proudly say they have been undefeated once again all year! James G, Freddie S, Barney M and Charlie G winning both the Freestyle and Medley relays! Before then we were very impressive in the individual races, Freddie came 1st in his 25m Freestyle, James came 1st in the 25m Backstroke, Charlie 1st in the 25m Breaststoke and Barney 2nd in the 25m Butterfly! Huge credit to all our Year 6 who have made the school proud with their efforts this year. Mr Catt. Rounders All of the U9 girls combined to play against Bricklehurst this week. It was such a super match, watched on by a field of sheep and one horse who were no doubt amused by the excitement. At the end of the first innings Claremont trailed by 2.5 to 4 the second batting innings from Claremont was excellent. Full rounders were scored by Aboorva, Tabitha and Fife and was added to by numerous half rounders as we set Bricklehurst a target of 10. I was really impressed by how the girls kept things tight in the field, restricting scoring opportunities. Bricklehurst eventually reached out total with 3 balls remaining. This led to a very exciting finish, with everything to play for. I am pleased to say that we held our nerve and earned a well deserved draw. POM - Olivia (bowler) Top scorer - Tabitha (2) Claremont won the loudest 3 cheers competition! Bricklehurst captain congratulates POM Olivia (a bit of work on handshakes needed girls!)

Cricket Claremont Colts A v 98-5 Ashford Prep Colts A It has been another good week for the Colts As, making in 3 wins on the bounce, and carries on the good work the boys have been doing in practice. The main reason for our decent run of late, is the maturity that we are showing with the bat. As a team, each man is coming in and playing some really well timed shots. Ashford went into bat first and scored 98 runs; our bowling and fielding was good throughout, like it has been most of the season. Charlie G, Ben R, James G, Austin R, and Barney M (a run out) picking up the wickets. 98 was a score that with sensible batting and calling, we would hope to get in 20 overs. Arjun and James went in at 1 & 2 respectively and batted very well. Arjun K picking up 11 runs and James G retiring on 33! Charlie G came in and picked up a further 11 runs, before Alfie S and Barney M saw us over the line with some excellent batting with 5 & 13 not out in 13 overs. We won the game by 9 wickets. Well done, boys! Mr Catt Claremont Colts B 56-3 v Ashford Prep Colts Ashford went into bat first and picked up 55 runs. Our bowling and fielding was excellent throughout. Giving away only a handful of wides and no balls in the process and picking up 10 wickets within 15 overs! Wickets taken by William B(2), Orlando S (2), Charlie W (2), Javier G with a couple of run outs too. The fielding was particularly pleasing as the backing up and alertness on the field was really good to see. Daniel G was first into bat and picked up six 4s on the way to scoring 26 runs. Jake S, Rufus B, and Charlie W came in to get the remainder of the runs by the 6th over. Well done to all the boys for a really solid all-round performance! Mr Williams U9 Cricket Claremont U9As Rose Hill As Its been a really good week for Cricket at Claremont as our As carried on their impressive run to add another good win against a fast bowling Rose Hill side. Our batting wasn't as strong as it has been in previous weeks and a score of 58 runs with 5 wickets down meant our bowling and fielding had to be on point. However our bowling and fielding was sharp throughout, and we made good decisions on the field. We managed to keep Rose Hill to a lot of singles and kept our wides and no balls down to a minimum. Will S (2), Luca R (2), Bob C, Harvey W, and Orlando S picking up the wickets. Mr Catt Claremont U9Bs Rose Hill Our Bs, which are made up of a lot of Year 3s, played a fantastic game of cricket. The batting was excellent, as all the boys pitched in with runs. Fourteen 4s were scored and a even a 6 from Oli H. Thomas W got five 4s too! We've done a lot of work on our bowling and encouraging the bowler to follow through with their action. This certainly proved the case as they picked up 4 wickets. Our fielding was good throughout as we made several good stops to save the 4s. Well done to all the U9 boys who played. Mr Williams U12s Triangular with Moira House and Dulwich Prep School Claremont Moira House Claremont Dulwich prep school The U12s played a fun triangular cricket tournament against Dulwich and Moira House on a wonderful sunny Wednesday afternoon. Natalia and Rachel made super catches in the field. Olivia was also on top form in the field, attacking the ball at speed and stumping someone out. In to bat, Amelie, Lyra and Elizabeth all hit some great shots scoring lots of runs. Well done, girls. Miss Compton. U11B Kwik Cricket v Ashford School The U11B cricket team had an action-packed match against Ashford School this week. There was some excellent batting and fielding skills on display from both teams, but Claremont proved too strong for their opposition and we won the game The girls played well as a team and demonstrated excellent communication skills. Sapphire must be congratulated on taking two wickets. Sapphire and her partner Evie also scored the highest number of runs. Ania and Ella scored an impressive number of fours in their innings. Lizzie and Chantalle had our hearts racing as they sped between the wickets determined to increase our lead, and Hattie and Eadie were impressive in the field. A special mention must go to our captain for the day, Chantalle, who was voted Player of the Match. Thank you to the parents for their continued support and to Charlotte for our delicious match teas. Ms Heidi Smith U11C Cricket v Ashford Prep The U11C girls faced two separate Ashford teams on Wednesday and had two incredibly tight results. I was really impressed by the progress these girls are making each week. Unlike Ashford, all of our girls had the confidence to bowl overarm. Saffron and Nancy deserve a special mention for clean bowling two Ashford girls. Saffron in fact only conceded one run from her over. The highlights from our batting was a Six from Izzy Z alongside a number of Fours. Top batting Pair - Tarran and Hattie (1st game) 12 runs off 6 balls. Izzy and Daisy (2nd game) 14 runs off 6 balls. POM Batter - Izzy for her impressive Six. POM Bowler - Saffron 1 for 1 off 1 over. (Only one wide bowled too). Miss Holmes.

Melanie has passed her Grade 2 Wing Chun Kung Fu exam and is now a Yellow/White belt. Well done Melanie. Thank you to Finlay for being our volunteer opponent! Varnika with her 10 metre swimming certificate. All Stars Cricket - another session - we have more fun each week! We are so excited to wear our new shirts. Thanks again to Mr Patel and his team. have planned and created fantastic natural sculptures in the style of the artist Andy Goldsworthy. We went to the woods to find our natural materials and then organised them into a pattern for our sculptures.

In Super Science we talked about air and gasses. We watched and felt gasses working as we blew up balloons. We then used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to make carbon dioxide to propel a foam rocket from its launch pad. We also used carbon dioxide generated by fermenting yeast, to expand a balloon on top of a bottle. The Foxes made cakes using yoghurt pots to measure most of the ingredients. The cracking of eggs and the incorporating ingredients was done largely independently now they re such great whizzes at baking! The children prepared rose petals for making fairy coronets in the woods during our Peter Pan themed day. The children who will be transferring to Claremont Reception began their transition visits which they are enjoying enormously. This week Kingfishers had a lot of fun outside: we had a very exciting day on Wednesday where we watched Peter Pan and spent the afternoon doing craft in the woods. We continued to make the most of the beautiful weather by going on a rainbow scavenger hunt. We found all sorts of wonderful things; we were very excited to find two toads under a log! We also enjoyed playing a game with dice and bricks to see who could add the most bricks to their tower before it fell down. This has been an exciting week in the Badgers class with our 'Fun Day' taking place on Thursday. We were lucky enough to watch a production of Peter Pan, enjoy a wonderful workshop with Peter Pan himself, as well as a picnic and lots of exciting activities in the woods. In addition to this, we have been doing some clay modelling and there have been some fantastic creations, they are drying; waiting to be taken home! Jolene Smith, one of our lovely staff members from Nursery, married her partner of many years, Paul Reid. Congratulations to them both.

This week the Hedgehogs have been in very busy making Fathers Day cards. We celebrated the birth of Freddie s baby with a little treat. And we have enjoyed the weather with water play activities and watering the plants outside. This week in Robins we have carried on making lots of creative items for the Robins Summer display board. We also got creative making our Fathers Day cards, it was lots of fun. We are also looking at the beach for our topic in Robins; we are asking very nicely if any Robins can bring some items in such as, shells, stones, seaweed or netting.

This week the Butterflies and Ducklings have enjoyed playing with the shells and sea animals in the fish tank which Butterflies made last week. The Butterflies have been busy painting large cardboard boxes in the garden which we had great fun making into boats and singing nursery rhymes in. Both rooms have enjoyed mark making in the playground using paint brushes, Lego, sand and water, which made some lovely patterns. The Ducklings have been busy bubble painting and making jelly fish for their beautiful display. We would like to say a big welcome to Halo and Arwyn who have started in Ducklings. This week we have been enjoying the sunshine with water play, gardening and playing outside. We have created beautiful cards for Father's Day.

Claremont's 24 Hour Annual Workout Claremont s 24 hour annual workout defied soaring temperatures to raise funds for Pestalozzi. Following the success of last year's workout, nearly 40 students from Claremont Senior School and Pestalozzi dug deep and toughed it out over 24 consecutive hours of physical and mental activity on Monday, 26 May, to raise funds for Pestalozzi International Village. Starting at 9am, students were put through a demanding and varied schedule of sports and team exercises, starting with Mr Patel's gruelling circuit training and ending with the traditionally epic game of Benchball at 9am the following day. There was something, during the 24 hours, for everyone, from yoga to swimming to boxercise to mindfulness. The physical demands of the sports involved were made all the tougher as temperatures soared to 28 0 C and the students' fitness and mental reserves were certainly tested as they battled to stay hydrated. Moving the 24 hour workout to the summer term meant we could take advantage of the extra hours of daylight and we spent a balmy evening after supper playing cricket, Sardines and Manhunt (won spectacularly by Harrison Wells, whose shock-and-awe strategy of leaping most unexpectedly out of a bush right at the end saw him crowned the undisputed winner!) This was followed by basketball and football on the all-new Astroturf as the last light finally faded. Activities continued through the night in the gymnasium, including old favourites of netball and volleyball, plus some interesting new alternatives for the less sporty, such as poi spinning, musical chairs (courtesy of Michael Jackson) and the toe-curlingly hilarious 'Spudball' (explanations near-impossible but available on request). As ever, the highlight was greeting the sunrise on a dawn walk down to Bodiam Castle. We were rewarded with a spectacular display of pink light on the castle walls as mist rose from the lake and sleepy ducks waddled ahead of us looking for breakfast. Thanks go to all the students and staff who took part, raised money, lead activities, supported each other and ultimately survived the stiff legs and exhaustion to make the event a success yet again. The deadline for donations and for fundraisers to get their money in is next week, but it is not too late to make an online donation at We are delighted to continue to support Pestalozzi in this way and the money raised will go directly to funding a life-changing opportunity for gifted students from developing countries to study here in the UK. Mrs McNally, Psychology Teacher

Glastonbury? Latitude? No ClaremontFEST is the buzz word of the summer festival scene! Here at Claremont Senior School the music rooms are a hive of activity. We are gearing up for our annual ClaremontFEST- an 'open mic, open air' style occasion on Tuesday, 27 June. Performers will come from Year 9 through to some highlyanticipated final performances from Year 13s. Everyone is invited to come along to check out this benchmark occasion. The music starts at 6pm (with an approximate end of 8pm). There is free entry and the event will be suitable for all ages. The sun will be shining (I've checked!). Bring a crowd (your neighbour, best friend, worst enemy) and picnics are welcome. FOCS will be running a bar and it has been rumoured there might even be the appearance of an ice-cream van! Don't miss out on a chance to support some of our best performers before they move on to the big lights! Look forward to seeing you there. Mrs Bartle, Head of Music Match Reports U15 Cricket vs Bethany (A) Tuesday, 13 June 2017 The U15 squad started the match having lost only one game this season. Claremont won the toss and batted first, which was a first for the squad this season. Matt Constable and Bruno Dickie opened the bowling and built pressure on the Bethany batsman. Hollie Pooke came on at the first change and took the first wicket, helped by a diving catch from Dan Chapman. The pressure continued to mount when Ollie Constable bowled from the other end and picked up a second wicket. Ben Oaten bowled with good control and pace before picking up the third wicket of the innings. Bethany finished on 76 for 4. The squad decided to alter its normal batting line up, to give the rest of the team a chance to have some valuable time in the middle. Disappointingly, the chase started poorly as Claremont lost a wicket with the first ball of the innings. Even though Bethany s run rate was healthy throughout the innings, Claremont got over the line with five overs to spare with Matt Constable hitting a six to win the game. Charles Dunton was the top scorer with 34. Rak Patel, Director of Sport Don't miss out on a chance to support some of our best performers before they move on to the big lights! Look forward to seeing you there. Mrs Bartle, Head of Music Please remember to RSVP for the Sports Dinner on Wednesday 28th June as soon as possible (today), if you have not already done so.

Success for Claremont Brothers at Sussex Schools Athletics Championships Well done to Tom Pitts for winning the Sussex Schools Boys Intermediate 400m hurdles race and also to his brother, Ivo Pitts, for winning the Year 9 javelin. Both competed at the Sussex Track and Field Championships, which was held in Crawley on 10 June. Both boys train extremely hard for their events and it is great to see their hard work paying off. Congratulations. Rak Patel, Director of Sport Year 11 Art The fantastic year 11 Art students exhibited two units of work each for their moderation on Monday 12th June. Their coursework was based on the self portrait theme of 'identity' and their OCR set task was a choice from a selection of themes including; illusion, dancers, celebration and stretched.
