Dear Parent, CLAREMONT SCHOOL Weekly Newsletter Monday 14th May 2018 Claremont School GCSE Results 2017: 31% A*/A A Level Results 2017: 34% A*/A Our Saturday Open Morning was not quite as dry as we had hoped, but this did nothing to dampen our spirits, or put off prospective parents, and it was a busy and energetic day. The maypole dancers, in particular, were impressively indefatigable, dancing cheerfully in the rain watched by an admiring group of existing and prospective parents. The maypole dancers were not the only pupils to impress; I had countless parents praising their tour guides for the polite and informative way in which they had shown our guests around the school. Words like mature, articulate, natural and charming were showered on our children. I felt very proud of the way in which they conducted themselves and am very grateful to all of those pupils who took part. We are looking forward to the Afternoon Tea concert tomorrow, where we will hear from a range of our talented soloists, as well as the Flute Ensemble and Brass Ensemble. Children from a range of year groups will be performing, including some of our youngest pupils and those for whom this will be their first formal performance in front of an audience. I never cease to be amazed at the high standard of musicianship at Claremont and I am looking forward to an enjoyable concert. The Year 7s returned from St Omer on Saturday afternoon, looking tired, but happy. They had enjoyed a busy itinerary and could not decide whether bowling, or the planetarium or, simply, playing games at the house had been the highlight of the trip. This was the last trip to la Maison Claremont this academic year; the Year 8s will be going to the south of France for their two-centre PGL adventures after their Common Entrance examinations next month. The inaugural Compton Cup saw sixteen girls cricket teams from a variety of local prep schools compete against each other. The Claremont teams played well, but ultimately Dulwich won the Compton Cup and Skippers Hill won the Compton Shield. Claremont is delighted to support and encourage girls participation in cricket and we will now run this event on an annual basis. Looking ahead, Sports Day will be taking place on 25 th May. Parents are welcome to bring a picnic, and FOCS will be providing light refreshments throughout the day. It is always such an enjoyable occasion, full of good sportsmanship and fun, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you there. 4 7B at la Maison Claremont Bonjour! 7B pupils returned safe and sound from France on Saturday 28 April after 3 brilliant days packed with visits and French learning in Saint Omer. Well done to all for being such an inspiring group, full of enthusiasm and fun. Here are some photographs and the itinerary to sum up this wonderful trip. Many thanks to Mr Constable for driving the minibus and for helping Mme Hood to organise this residential visit to la Maison Claremont. Mr Constable has been great on two of our Year 7 trips with 7A and Mme Osborne and this week he is on his third visit with Miss Jackson and 7AL We are thinking of Mr Wood who has recently done his 51st trip to St Omer and thank him for passing on tips and knowledge on to Mr Constable. Please, see below Year 7 itinerary for the French trips. Thank you to all Year 7 parents who have supported these trips. Daisy-Mae: It was great fun and I wish that we were still there! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A BRILLIANT FRENCH TRIP!!!!!!!!!!

Year 4 had a brilliant trip to the PGL Centre at Windmill on Friday 4th May. The weather was glorious and the children really rose to the challenges set them... from dark muddy underground tunnels, giant swings, zip wires to archery. The PGL leaders were very complimentary about the politeness, enthusiasm and energy shown by our pupils.

Years 7 & 8 Swimming Gala Claremont Bethany The senior squads swam at Bethany on Tuesday evening and they swam fantastically well. Two scoring swimmers per event to score. We competed over 25m and 50m races. We were very strong in all the races and came out on top in most of them. We won all the freestyle and medley relays. Our Year 7 girls and boys squads are carrying on their excellent progress in the pool as they again proved how strong they are with some stand out performances. They are certainly up there with the strongest group of swimmers we have had in many a year. The Year 8's have gone from strength to strength, although not always having a consistent team out each gala, they rally together and have been very competitive this year. A breakdown of the results are below have been separated boys and girls. Well done to all of our swimmers. CL BTH Girls Boys 36 33

U8 Girls Cricket v Dulwich Prep: The Year 3 girls started the cricket season with a win away at Dulwich this week. Claremont batted first and showed some good decision-making. Maya and Ella were the strongest batting pair scoring a total of 20 runs. When fielding, Ava and Olive were the most prolific duo, even taking two wickets with some quick stumping from Ava. All the girls attempted a full bowling technique and it s great to see the progress they are all making. Final score: Dulwich 27 runs. Claremont 54 runs. U9/8 Cricket v Dulwich Prep This was the first game of the season for the Y3/4 girls. I was really impressed with their bowling and batting. Claremont were the the slightly stronger team on the day. My POM was Ella M who demonstrated a good all round performance.

U11 Girls Claremont Cricket Festival Over 100 pupils participated in the U11 girls Claremont cricket festival on Wednesday afternoon. There were 16 teams involved from local prep schools including Bedes, St Andrews, Bricklehurst, Sacred Hart, Skippers Hill and Dulwich. The main aim of the festival was for all the girls taking part to have fun and play lots of cricket. To build enthusiasm for the game, each team nominated a different icon player every match who scored double points. It was a pleasure to have the senior school sports leaders umpire and score all the matches. Congratulations to Dulwich who won the Compton cricket cup and to Skippers Hill who won the Compton shield. Every girl involved received a medal. Well done to everyone who took part. Thank you to FOC s for providing refreshments.

Riding club in the sunshine! Mask making in craft club! A wet afternoon in Forest School.

Freddie was named on Team on the Season for Pass n Move Sporting Club. They took one player from each year group and presented them with a Fifa 18 style badge with their name, photo and rating on. Freddie was overjoyed with this! Maths and IT in Year 2. 2F badge winner of the week was Isla! Morning work in 2B.

This week RW have been learning the 'oi' sound in phonics and they all really enjoyed making words using the sound bibs. They have also been on a bug hunt in the Jubilee Garden. They found many different species of insects From snails and slugs to centipedes and earwigs. They put some into a magnifying pot to examine them before putting them back where they found them.

Super tens and units from 1L this week!

This week we have been partitioning 2 digit numbers to show tens and units. We selected a number and using the dienes or pencils and cubes, we worked out how many tens and units each number had. In Geography we have been looking at the seven continents and we found some information about Europe with a focus on France and the Eiffel Tower. In D&T we created our own version on the Eiffel Tower. Tres Bien!

Elizabeth, Mollie and Mollie rescued two injured baby birds. Well done girls! The new FOCS board... what we do! Mrs Luff s phonics group did amazingly well learning about the magic e

RN have been out exploring the woodlands this week on a hunt for minibeasts. We have searched high and low trying to complete the mini-beast bingo board. The children identified the features of different minibeasts and their habitats. They had so much fun exploring the great outdoors and learning some wonderful facts. Did you know a butterfly tastes food with their feet? RN do!

Ducklings & Butterflies This week both the Ducklings and Butterflies have been enjoying the lovely weather by making dens in the garden, sand and pasta play with our friends in Robins and lots of bubble and water play both inside and outside in the playground.

Robins This week in Robins we have made the most of the glorious sunshine and played with a range of toys and activities outside. We also really got stuck in with making some lovely chocolate pirate cakes to take home.

Hedgehogs This week we have been focusing on Transport. The children talked about all bikes they had seen and heard on Monday. We have made some artwork using the wheels of the cars to paint with. Some of the children made a bus using the chairs, we then went on to make tickets for the passengers.

Badgers & Foxes This week in Badgers and Foxes, we have been looking at different mathematical concepts. We have been reinforcing our learning on patters by finding different resources in the classroom and putting them in a patterned order. We have then been looking at differences in size. Thinking about what vocabulary we could use to describe the size of different objects. The children had a turn to cut out different sized shapes and order them by size after. We have also created some paper dolls for the classroom and given them two names which rhyme, its safe to say the children love to rhyme as some even have five names.

Squirrels After talking about the Bank Holiday weekend, the children have been decorating ice cream scoops for our summer display based on their favourite flavour ice cream. Following last week s mini beast hunt, the children have been using handprints to make spiders on webs. They have really enjoyed playing with the dried rice to cook cakes for our friends and making fans outside in the hot weather.

Kingfishers This week the Kingfishers have been looking after the plants in the Jubilee Garden, and planted some more seeds. Everyone took it in turns to water the plants and make sure they were growing well. We have also been looking at the numbers 1-5 and comparing quantities using the number sponges to make print pictures.
