S P R I N G T E R M - I S S U E 3 W/E 25TH JANUARY 2019 HOLIDAY CLUB Please don t forget to send your booking form in for the holiday club before next Friday, 1st February. A Lego & Star Wars workshop will be running on Tuesday 19th February.
Reception have been tasting different lots of bread. Bagels, panini s, fruit bread, pitta, tortilla and brioche. The brioche was a favourite. Michaela from Lion Learners came in to Nursery on Wednesday and brought with her some very special visitors. The children were really fascinated by the unusual animals that came along. There was Rose the tarantula, Claude the bearded dragon, Jack the tortoise and Snap the giant hissing cockroach. The children were very sensible and brave when asked to hold the animals. There were some furrier visitors too in the form of Harry the lion head lop rabbit and Barney the Guinea pig. The children had a great time finding out about what they eat, why some have long ears, where they live and how fast a bearded dragon can run along the carpet! Reception have been busy designers this week. First we designed and made a sock puppet, looking closely at our design to make sure we included everything on our sock. We then made a peg doll like the ones children used to make a long time ago. We used a dolly peg and materials from the creative area. It was lots of fun. Also in Nursery the letter this week was 'g' and we did some lovely pictures of our Grannies and Grandads! We read the story of the Gingerbread Man and made some ginger biscuits to go with the story. We also read and retold The Three Billy Goats Gruff story then challenged the children to make some bridges of their own, testing the different construction kits to see which are the best.
Pre-Nursery went on a nature walk on Friday to see what wildlife they could find. The saw squirrels, crows and even a raven that sounded like a duck! ASHDOWN INFMATION BOARD Eleanor McKone will be returning to see us again next week with the launch of her next book which is about her travels in Canada. Just like her last book, it will be available to buy and will be signed by the author herself. Watch out for the e mail with details. The fluoride team are in school to sign Nursery and Reception children up to the scheme on 30th. Don't worry if you don't manage to be in school to do this, your dentist can apply the fluoride just as easily. They should be around at drop off time both in the morning and at the beginning of the afternoon session. Year One enjoyed playing the role of a monarch this week as they took part in their very own mock coronations! We have been thinking about the role of a monarch and will be finding out more about some significant queens both past and present. Year 2 have been on a Florence Nightingale fact hunt. With a partner they had to search around the classroom for the answers to a number of questions. Some of the questions were... When was Florence Nightingale born? What was the name of one of the men who asked for her hand in marriage? Where did Florence Nightingale train to be a nurse? They worked well together - taking turns and helping each other read and write.
Last Friday saw (and smelt) the spectacle that was Year 3 mummification. The children thoroughly enjoyed performing the mummification process on real fish. Whilst there is still quite a fishy smell lingering around the building, we believe it was truly worth it to give the children such an in depth experience! In their Bush Craft session this week Year 4 have been learning about how to spot the signs of someone suffering from hypothermia. They tested out one of the techniques for helping a person exhibiting these symptoms. Can you recognise the two peas in a 'sleeping bag' pod from 4S?
In maths this week, some of the children in Year 5 have been attempting to find the combination to a locked box! The children had to work collaboratively to solve a series of maths problems, which revealed some 4-digit combinations. Three combinations had to be accurately submitted before the groups could attempt the final problem and crack the code for the lock on the box! STEM Club were given the challenge to make a model of a communications tower using a scale of 1:100 and using straws, spaghetti and marshmallows to represent steel girders and brackets. They also had to work out the total cost of all their materials including a satellite dish (petri dish in our model) which was a pricey 5000! A very tricky challenge but some of the children succeeded as you can see!
On Friday 18th January the U10A Netball team had their first match of 2019, playing away against Richmond House. Everybody played really well with some good passing and good goals from our team, but most importantly great teamwork! Richmond House were a strong team and we ended the match 14/6 to Richmond House. I enjoyed this game and the opportunity to be Captain. Thank you to Mrs Couzens for being an amazing coach and to all the girls of Bronte House. My lady of the match is Daisy, who I thought had a good energy and played really well. By Aurelia The U9 football team travelled to Lady Lane School on Tuesday to test their skills with the round ball, in an eagerly anticipated fixture. In two exciting encounters both A and B teams won comfortably, scoring 13 goals between them. The skill and enjoyment levels were incredibly high which was no surprise considering the level of ability in this talented year group. Well done to everyone who played. The U8 netball team played their third fixture of the year against Ghyll Royd on Tuesday. They got off to a great start in the first quarter and continued to play well for the whole match. There was some confident shooting from Anya and Emily and some excellent interceptions from the defence. The final score was 12 0 to Bronte House. Well done girls! AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS There will be no Year 3 & 4 Cross Country next Tuesday due to the U8 & U9 football fixture at Aysgarth.
