1 Waverley School and Nursery Communication Week ending 27th January 2012 We are eagerly anticipating our Open Day tomorrow and the school is looking splendid ready to receive our visitors. Intensive training has taken place and we have a crack team of tour guides ready to show the school off at its very best, along with a host of volunteers to play and sing whilst parents and visitors chat and have coffee in the hall. If you will be attending the morning coffee session in the hall between 11 and 11:30a.m please do feel free to chat to prospective parents. As a family school, I think prospective parents will really benefit from the complete picture from our pupils, staff and parents. In assembly, we thought about whether we wanted to be the kind of people who hunger and thirst for righteousness as we continued our look at the Beatitudes. We looked at the UN council s declaration on the rights of the child and reflected on how fortunate we are to be able to experience a lot of things that other children will never have. The children were particularly moved by the thought of some children not having opportunity to play, a small thing that we can often take for granted. Lastly, this week, our warm congratulations go to Elizabeth for her dancing, Jacob and Maddie for their skating and to James who has done exceptionally well in his Reading Course. 2 Reminders for Week Beginning 30th January Monday 30 th Swimming Lessons # 4 Tuesday 31 st Eagle House Maths Challenge Friday 27 th Year 1 Class Assembly - 9am Parents Evening The times for the appointments on our two Parents Evenings have been changed and therefore differ from those previously published. The times are now as detailed below: Tuesday 6th March - 3:45pm to 6pm Thursday 8 th March - 6pm to 8:30pm Match Reports Netball Waverley U10/U11 v Holme Grange. A very closely contested match for the first half, the score being 2-2 at half time. Some great passing sequences performed by both teams and some excellent defending by Anna, Josie and Ashleen. We increased the pace in the second half, with some great attacking play from Jemima and Kathyrn and accurate shooting by Sophie and Dionne the final score being 19-7 with Dionne player of the match. Captain was Ashleen. (Alison Serjeant) Rugby U11s Rugby vs. Hawley Place Although the result didn t go our way the boys from years 5 and 6 and 2 from year 4 had a great match against Hawley Place. The match was their first experience of contact rugby this year and they all performed very well. They all tackled well and dealt with some tough opposition to come out with a good result. The match has put them in good stead for the U11s tag rugby match against Oaklands School next Wednesday. I would like to thank all the boys for their excellent behaviour whilst travelling to and from Hawley Place and whilst at the match. Man of the match: Ben Blaker We are looking to make a list of parents who would be able to help us transport children to and from away matches on a Wednesday afternoon. This would be a list we would look to use once or twice a term rather than a weekly arrangement. We would aim to leave Waverley between 1:30pm and 2:00pm and return to school between 4:00pm and 4:30pm. If you are able and willing to help please the school at info@wavelreyschool.co.uk. 3 Main Gate Could we please ask parents to ensure that the pedestrian entry/exit gate closes behind them? On occasions the gate is pushed back to a point which causes the hydraulic closure to stick and prevent the gate from closing automatically. This affects the security of the school and the safety of the children. Thank you for your co-operation. Waverley Early Years Nursery This week we went for a walk in the woods. The Cuddly Cubs got very messy with some paint and the Bouncing Bears had fun doing some artwork for our new Birthday Board. Pre-Prep 1 The Cheeky Chimps have changed their creative board; we painted our hands and feet with bright colours and printed them on paper. We have been practising putting on our coats to go out to play, started learning new songs in French and we did some cooking and made play dough too. Pre-Prep 2 On Monday we celebrated the Chinese New Year by making a very large Chinese Dragon. Clarissa one of the children brought in a beautiful Chinese Lion along with some cymbals and a drum, so we were able to do a Lion and Dragon dance accompanied by some great percussion. Then at snack time we all tried eating rice using chopsticks. The children decided it was much easier to use a spoon or a fork! The rest of the week we continued with the theme of Ourselves looking this week at Babies. The children brought in photographs of themselves as babies and we were able to compare how they looked as babies and how they look now. We were also very lucky to have a visit from Mrs Thomas who brought in her baby Elisa. She talked about what a baby needs and brought in some baby clothes of various sizes as well as baby toys, blankets and rattles for the children to look at. Mrs Rees thinks Elisa enjoyed meeting the children just as much as they enjoyed meeting her.

4 Spotlight on Cookery Clubs The KS1 children have enjoyed rolling out pastry to make jam tarts and they have learned how to rub fat into flour to make breadcrumb mix for cheese scones. This week we squeezed lemons and limes and mixed with mascarpone cheese to go on our biscuit base cheesecakes. We are looking forward to making crispy vegetable pancakes with filo pastry next week. (Suzanne Whitcher and Sarah Dingle) The KS2 children enjoy a class each week given by Kitchen Capers, in their first class they learned about Indian food, tasting poppadums and dips, mixing spices and making an Indian yoghurt drink. This week they enjoyed learning about Robert Burns, Burns night celebrations and traditional Scottish dishes such as Haggis, tatties and neeps which they all enjoyed eating. They made a Scottish dessert to take home called Cranachan using cream raspberries, vanilla essence and toaster rolled oats. Delicious! Next week its Chinese food!

5 RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch All you need is a pen, some scrap paper (or, a printout of the handy RSPB bird ID sheet), and an hour to spend watching the birds in your garden, or local park, on either Saturday 28, or Sunday 29 January Simply make a note of the highest number of each bird species seen on the ground (not flying over) at any one time, and tell the RSPB what you saw. Further details can be found at Waverley Friends Association Disco Party Thank you to everyone who helped to make the disco another great WFA event. Date for Your Diary - Saturday 21 st April We have managed to secure tickets for Waverley pupils, family and friends to attend the Reading vs. Crystal Palace game at the Madjeski Stadium on Saturday 21 st April.
