1 The Pitsford Post 30th October - 10th November 2017 Welcome This half term has started with a bang; we ve had firework safety first aid for J4, the Shakespeare for Schools performance at the Royal & Derngate, Remembrance services, Roman day and a fire engine visit to name just a few of the last fortnight s big events! These past two weeks really have demonstrated the commitment that our staff and pupils have to the school - including Mrs Ross generously spending hours making Shakespeare costumes for our entire Year 8, our J3 pupils crafting some magnificent shields for Roman day and the sign ups still coming through for the 24 hour cyclothon taking place next week. A big thank you to those who continue to show so much support and passion for Pitsford School. 2 Year 9 French and History Trip Year 9 travelled to France on Monday 9 th October to practise their French and immerse themselves in French culture as well as visit some of the key World War I sites. After crossing the Channel on board the Eurotunnel we arrived at Le Moulin aux Draps in Desvres in Northern France, not far from Boulogne, which was our base for the week. The 3 star accommodation met all expectations and we were well catered for and looked after by François and his dog Winston. François organised daily activities for us all in French, from team building to Bingo! The staff there did not really speak English or rather pretended not to be able to, as some of us suspected, and we had to recall what we had seen in class, with variable success, when we wanted to get extra food or drinks. Speaking of food, Mr Vié decided that it would not be a real French trip if we did not get the opportunity to try snails, which in fact were not as bad as we expected and were more like some kind of chewy garlic butter snacks. Not something we would order again, but worth the try! The visits were both informative and enjoyable; from learning how to make sweets, to exploring the oceans at the Nausicaa sea-life centre, complete with penguins and sea lions. We also had the opportunity to do a bit of shopping in Boulogne town centre and visited the Collège de l Europe in Ardres where we met our pen pals. We were lucky as our visit coincided with an exhibition in Ardres on how the British forces settled and interacted with the local population during the First World War. The guided tour of the trenches at Vimy Ridge was one of the highlights of the trip together with Wellington Quarry where more than British troops hid underground for several weeks before the battle of Arras in April We finally came back to Pitsford on Friday 13 th October with plenty of good memories, and we hope younger year groups will enjoy it as much as we did.

3 J3 Roman Day On Thursday 2nd November J3 took part in a Roman Day to bring to life their current topic. The whole class dressed as Roman soldiers and used their Roman shields, which were constructed as a homework task, to take part in some battle drills and simulations to experience life in the Roman infantry. They also had a chance to bake some Roman bread using a traditional recipe and finally enjoy a Roman feast. Junior Wake Charity Day Just before half term, the pupils of Wake House in the Junior School held their Charity Day in aid of The Faraway Children's Charity. 266 raised The Faraway Children s charity is a local charity in Wellingborough which raises money for disadvantaged children in the local area. Our J6 Wake pupils wrote and delivered a special assembly, all junior school pupils came to school in mufti, held a cake sale and had the opportunity to take part in a colouring competition. They raised 266 which will go to the charity's Christmas appeal, providing Christmas presents to children who otherwise would not receive them. Great work Wake! If found please return to the school office. Thank you House Lunches Throughout last week, we saw in the new half term with our house lunches. This was a great opportunity for our Senior pupils to meet different year groups and of course to hand out the house badges to all our new starters. It was great to see such team spirit and unity amongst Robinson, Hesketh and Wake.

5 Netball U13 V Welland Park On the 1st November the U13s played their second match against Welland Park this year. They started off playing half of Welland s A Team and half of their B team. At half time the A team players went off and the rest of the B team came on. At least half of their B team. The final score was 14-3 to Welland and the Player of the Match was Hannah GS. Wanted - Newspapers Our art department is desperately seeking newspapers! If any of our parents are able to donate any read papers, we would be very appreciative. Please hand in any donations to the school office.

6 Rugby U18 s v Bloxham 3 rd XV The Under 18s travelled to Bloxham School near Banbury on Tuesday to take on their 3 rd XV. The squad, somewhat rocked by last week s injuries, was rallied and pulled together well by the Captain and Vice-Captain (Connor B and Sam N) which orchestrated the perfect response to last week s defeat. Pitsford started as they meant to go on, immediately igniting the spark in their performance with crunching tackles and barnstorming carries which rose the game to what would go on to be a titanic clash of two even sides. The rain moved from drizzle to monsoon (contrary to Mr Lewis s predictions) and neither team appeared to notice. There seemed to be a mutual respect growing between both sides as tackles went flying in and the intensity rose. Soon it was Pitsford hammering the line inside Bloxham s 22, they declined the opportunity to kick an early penalty and went for the jugular in trying to gain that critical first try. It wasn t to be - resolute defence from Bloxham and some attack errors close to the line meant that Pitsford couldn t quite cross the whitewash. Pitsford didn t let up this pressure though and it then seemed every single clearance kick from Bloxham was magnetically attracted to full back Freddie B who was perfectly position on every occasion and returning each kick with interest making for his best personal performance to date. As the first half closed Pitsford were now under pressure which excellent defence held out for a sustained period before unfortunately for Pitsford one single error resulted in a try for Bloxham, also converted. The half time team talk was very positive the team knew they had returned to a highly spirited and strong performance and they were eager to get stuck in and hopefully turn the game into a victory. Bloxham s performance rose again in the second half and a thrilling encounter ensued but neither side was really able to gain a field position which would allow them to strike. Eventually with Pitsford pushing to draw level this allowed now a well-supported Bloxham to grab another well-earned score. Pitsford weren t done yet and spent the final 8 minutes desperately pushing to get one back but it wasn t to be. An excellent performance the kind where singling out one performer for a man of the match performance wouldn t be easy or maybe even right with the whole team at their best and several top performers including Sam G, Tobias W, Joe C, Talhah H and of course Freddie B. For this one though I will, despite the above notion! After a huge contribution to everything in the game this week, it goes to Ryan M, who was phenomenal - putting in his best ever performance in a Pitsford shirt.
