THE NEWSLETTER OF POLWHELE HOUSE Dear Parents. We are now close to half-term and a welcome break for everyone. I hope that you can have a pause in your schedules and a chance to recharge the batteries. It has been an incredibly busy six weeks and I am learning more and more about Polwhele daily. It is encouraging to see so many children representing the School in sports fixtures and to hear about such a wide variety of opportunities that our children are having here. Our Tuesday Commendation Assemblies are wonderful occasions where we celebrate the children s achievements in class and also around the School and in the local community. The Parents Meetings are going very smoothly and these are proving very useful for staff and parents in agreeing ways forward that benefit the children s learning. I am grateful to all of the staff for the extra time after a busy day. Thank you especially to Miss Watkins for keeping going with no internet for a whole week and apologies to parents who have experienced delays in our responses. Mr Rudkin has resolved the issue and we are now receiving a flood of s. I am also continuing to enjoy meeting parents individually and will be pulling main themes together from all my meetings since May with parents and staff as well as discussions with children. I will discuss these with the staff and take the more significant ideas to the Managing Council, in the second half of term, reporting back any developments to the Polwhele community soon after. Monday 29 October 8am Michaelmas Term recommences 8am Nasal Flu Vaccina tions I hope that you have a good week. 5 S O TS NEWS Hockey U9 5 a side Away Fixture V TP & THS Tuesday 9 October 2:15pm MATCH REPORT On Tuesday Year 4 played our first match against Truro High School. All players worked hard and played well. The final score was 7-2 to Truro High School, with both our goals scored by Sofia Lippiatt. We are going to work on listening skills and keeping our stick to the ground for our next match! By Rosie Warren
Rugby Match Report Wednesday 10th October Polwhele U10/11s v Truro Prep U10/11s We had a great match on Wednesday 10th October against Truro Prep U10/11s. We had four Truro Prep players who took turns to play on our team. We started off strong scoring 3 tries in the first 5 minutes. During our first water break we had a chat about what we should be doing better. I have never seen our team try so hard, everyone in year 5 and year 6 was running for the try line and making lots tackles. Despite Henry saying he didn t want the ball he took it very confidently and ran very strongly and also George Warren tackled so many people! He even had a couple of scratches but that didn t seem to put him off. When George Holder passed him the ball he ran with determination. Finn, Archie and Jacob all scored 3 ties each and played brilliantly. It is impossible for me to pick one or two players to be man of the match so I have decided that the whole team deserve it. The final score was 11-7 to Polwhele. Time for our sweet party!. Olly Goldby, Rugby Captain.
Hockey Match Report Tuesday 10 th October Polwhele v Truro High School Polwhele House went to play hockey at Truro High School. We played four matches, three against Truro Prep teams and one against a Truro High team. We were delighted that we won two of the games, though unfortunately we lost two of the games also. However, we are really proud of what we achieved as it was our first matches of the season. Man of the match: Elizabeth was the man of the match because of her excellent tackling, working as part of the team and her accurate passing. However, as captain I would like to say that everyone contributed with all of their efforts and worked amazingly as a team to score some great goals. Let s keep up the hard work, effort and working as the great team we are. Well done. Nerayah Aubrey, Hockey Captain

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR YEAR 7 STUDENT AND SPORTS SCHOLAR....who attended her first significant level 2 gala of the season at the weekend ahead of her trip to Jersey for her first international meet and achieved 5 personal best times and two medals in 50m and 100m backstroke.
M SIC & D AMA NEWS On of our Year 7 Performing Arts Scholars has recently had the opportunity to work as a double as the younger Elton in the filming of Rocket Man. It is a fantasy musical portraying the life of Elton John, directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Rob Maddern and many others. It is due to be released in May 2019 by Paramount Pictures. This has been the second time our student has worked with a film production team and this time he has been based at Bray Studios near Windsor which has given him experience on set as well as out on location. He loves watching the stunts, meeting interesting people, learning about film production and eating the amazing food produced by the catering team!

EQ EST IAN NEWS We were delighted to hear that one of our Equestrian Scholars, won a World Championship Team Gold Medal recently, at the Laser Tag Championships held in Dublin. Competing for only the second time in this sport, she achieved an Individual 5th place, and Team Gold! She first started shooting as part of Pony Club Tetrathlon competitions, representing the local Four Burrow Hunt Pony Club. Having developed a keen interest in Modern Pentathlon, she recently started training for both fencing and laser shooting. After a successful first competition, she was invited to take part at the World Championships with Team GB. Having to shoot at a target directly after completing a cross country run is very challenging, and Daisy puts her success down to a good technique of breathing and rhythm. We look forward to sharing many more of her successes in the coming months! Also out competing recently, were two of our Year 3 students, who took part in a Combined Training event at the Royal Cornwall Showground, with their North Cornwall Hunt Pony Club. This event requires riders to complete a Dressage Test followed by a round of show jumps! One of our Year 3 s won his class on his lovely pony Shilstone Windwhistle (Wind) with our other Year 3 close behind in 2nd place on the beautiful Blackberry!
