Next Tuesday the children will be having individual photographs taken so please could I request they come to school wearing full uniform (summer or winter) with blazers; and just to confirm to all parents that winter uniform becomes compulsory after the half term break. Please note due to the Prep School parent-teacher meetings, the only Prep School club running on Monday and Thursday next week is prep club. Therefore all children should be collected as usual at 3.40pm or 5.00pm. If you would like your child to attend prep club on either of these nights please inform Ms van Emden. For those with appointments after 5.00pm, if alternative childcare arrangements cannot be made, there will be some chairs positioned in the centre of the hall on which the children are welcome to sit and read quietly while waiting; they will not be allowed to roam freely in or around school and the grounds. These stories were researched and written by the children, and printed in the Polwhele Post over the two weeks around Remembrance Day, along with poetry written in response to History and English lessons on this theme. We would be delighted to receive family stories again, to help the children understand both their own history, and the contributions of others to the bigger picture. Please forward any contributions to Ms van Emden in the school office by the 30th of October if possible photos and other mementos are also welcome. Thank you.

PREP NEWS ASSEMBLY THOUGHTS: Please talk to your child about this image, and how it featured in assembly last week. On Thursday Mme Fergus spoke to us about peace. She asked us if we could think of any symbols of peace. We came up with some suggestions and then Mme Fergus showed us a selection of symbols and we spoke about them and their meanings. We looked at a map of conflicts around the world. We reflected on how lucky we were that we knew peace and we thought about how we can have peace in our own lives every day. We finished with a prayer and Mme Fergus told us that she would create a display and would like us all to add our messages of peace to it. We have made a great start please see below: LOST PROPERTY: Caleb Sanford is missing a blue school coat it has his initials in it has anyone seen it? Florence Tillyard has mislaid her blazer has anyone taken it home by mistake? Many thanks!

SPORTS NEWS All of Y3 and Y4 were excited and ready to face the challenges on the rugby and hockey pitches during their first sporting fixtures of the new academic year. Y3 were particularly keen to tackle their first ever team fixture for Polwhele and Mr Main and Mrs Lusty were very proud of their efforts on the pitch. All of our teams achieved great results; keep it up Polwhele!

Polwhele House v Truro Prep U8s Wednesday 4 October We started off the match by scoring a spectacular goal with Gus sprinting through their defences. We were on the offensive. As we played we improved our passing. We only let them sore once or twice, and by half time we were very tired but winning. We won My man of the match is Rex for his great running and passing. Well done everybody. Henry Piccin-White Pictures courtesy of Aaron Trevena Polwhele v Truro Prep & St Petroc s Wednesday 4 October Polwhele first played against Truro Prep; it was a tough game and we lost but we learnt a lot. We realised we need to tackle more and pass more and this helped us in our second game against St Petroc s. We won this game. Our try scorers on the day were Jack, Olly, Jacob and Archie. My man of the match is Olly Goldby because of his super tries and great tackling. Well done everybody. Jack Beckly Pictures courtesy of Kurt Sanford

Y3 & Y4 Hockey v Truro High School & Truro Prep This was our first fixture since returning back to school so we were all nervous but excited. Our first match was against Truro Prep B Team. Despite being a newly formed team we all seemed to gel really well! Jessica had great connection with the ball, which resulted in her scoring 3 goals for us. Overall score TP 0 PH 3 The next team we were up against was THS B Team. This was a tough match, with players challenging at every opportunity. Both Ruby and Lucia tackled well, with Lucia defending our goal, leaving little space for THS to score. End result was a draw 2-2. Our final opposition was THS A Team. It was clear that our team were beginning to tire, but that we were also up against a good team. Pippa played extremely well, controlling the ball and passing nicely. Final score THS 3 PH 0. Well done to all players who showed great skill. Man of the Match for Y3 goes to Lucy Alford for her determination when tackling, and Y4 Man of the Match is awarded to Lucia Warden for her encouragement and continually defending. Poppy Stevenson, Captain Mixed U11 Rugby v Truro Prep As this was our first rugby match of the season adrenaline levels were high; it was also our first time we had played rugby since the beginning of the term! We weren t used to the team s characteristics, however we were the first to score, in only about the first three minutes, we were so fast off the mark that Truro Prep hadn t even taken possession of the ball when we scored. By half time however we were losing 1-2 but the match was so even that they only scored in the last 20 seconds. My man of the match is Digby for his amazing play, and team spirit. Bertie Tillyard Polwhele House Rugby v Truro Prep Aaron Malhotra The game began with Leo and Retallack driving through the opposition and passing the ball to and fro, and then they scored a try. After a breath-taking first half, the second half began and Matthew and I scored many tries; the final score was 18-1 Polwhele House under 8s rugby team had won! Overall I think it was a good game, and I cant wait to play the next! My man of the match is the whole team for putting in 100 percent, and I think that deserves a well done!

MUSIC NEWS Brass & Theory Lessons I have space for new students of all ages and abilities. I am a professional French Horn player myself and have been teaching at Polwhele for a number of years now. Several of my students have now moved on to pastures new and so I have space for some new students. I would love to build up the numbers of brass players in the school again so that we can continue our brass ensemble performances. Lessons are available on French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Cornet, Euphonium & Tuba. Smaller models are available of all the instruments and all lessons will include theory tuition too. In addition to my brass teaching, I particularly enjoy teaching theory and would be happy to help any student with their music theory. I am in school on Monday mornings or can be contacted on Kind regards, Jacqueline Kershaw

EQUESTRIAN NEWS As you may know, we organise a number of activities and clubs at the stables during school holiday breaks. This half term is no exception! We will have a Midweek Club on the morning of Wednesday 25th October, with a Show Jumping Clinic in the afternoon, and we will be offering private lessons and hacks on Friday 27th, along with a new and very exciting activity Equisimulator Lessons!!! We have secured the Equisimulator for one full day on Friday 27th, and will be offering half hour sessions with Emily Lloyd at a cost of 25. One huge challenge for riders learning to canter, is how to sit correctly to the movement, which requires both control and relaxation, in order for the rider to move in unison with the horse. Most young riders struggle with this, as their bodies tense naturally when they feel they are moving faster, and this causes them to bounce, which is uncomfortable for both rider and horse. The Equisimulator will move in trot and canter, and will help riders to learn the correct movement, and can also help experienced riders to perfect their canter position, and give a good work out to their core and lower back! Places are limited, so if you are interested, do please let Ms van Emden know as soon as possible, along with your choice of morning or afternoon session on 27th. We do need payment in advance to confirm each booking, and please note that this is non-refundable (unless we have enough notice of cancellation, to fill the space). This event will be advertised publicly on our Facebook page later in the week! Also later this week, we will be writing to parents of riders in Year 5 and above, in order to introduce our Polwhele House School Grooms programme, and to invite applications from those riding pupils who are interested in becoming a Groom for this coming year. Being able to spend time in the peaceful setting of the stables, caring for and grooming the ponies is a wonderful privilege, and a super opportunity to develop confidence handling ponies from the ground. It also provides a great chance to improve communication and team-working skills, whilst learning to take responsibility for the care of our animals. Grooms will be expected to commit to at least one morning and one afternoon each week throughout the coming year.
