1 THE Polwhele Post Issue No October 2018 From the Headmaster... THE NEWSLETTER OF POLWHELE HOUSE Dear Parents Wednesday 3 October 2.15pm U10 Hockey Trian gular Tournament at Truro High 2.30pm U11 Rugby v Truro Prep (away) Monday 8 October 8.00am Pre-Prep Parent- Teacher Meeting Week Thank you to so many of you for attending our Harvest Festival last week. This was a wonderful occasion masterminded by Mrs Caddy. It was beautifully organised and the children sat quietly and respectfully enjoying taking it all in. The performances were magical and I am very grateful to Mrs Caddy for all her preparation and to Mrs Knight- Bennett for her work with the musicians. There is more on this later in this edition of The Polwhele Post. Information about our first Parents Meetings will be sent out soon and Mrs Topsey-Eaton will explain how we are reviewing how we assess the children to fit in with our new marking policy that we started this term. Thank you for the positive feedback we have received already we are tickled pink! Our Value is now Respect and I know you will support us in highlighting such an important value with the children. In Tuesday Commendation Assemblies a child from each class is being picked out and the Form Tutor is explaining how they have been respectful around the School. I am enjoying watching the Cornwall weather change and really appreciating our amazing location. I hope that you have a good week and enjoy the weekend when it comes! 5 E E NEWS Harvest Festival 2018 The Value of Caring We enjoyed a wonderful Harvest Festival Service together on Friday 28 th September and it was great to see so many parents. We were thrilled that you gave up time to come and share this service with us and we hope that you enjoyed being a part of it. Pre-prep children had all contributed and had great fun in making a harvest loaf which was at the centre of our table. Thanks to Mrs Bishop for providing the dough! The children at school have been focusing on the value of caring in September and the Harvest Festival continued to reflect on this. We thought about our world being part of the universe and thought about the recent missions to the sun and to Mars. We need to appreciate and care about our world as it seems to be truly unique. The songs chosen reflected the topic we were discussing: Appreciation of our world and the fact that if we don t look after it there will be consequences. We thought about Sudan, the last male Northern white Rhino and the critically endangered Orangutans. Thank you so much to everyone who helped on Friday. It was great to see the whole school singing together. Thank you, Mrs Knight-Bennett, for helping with the music. The Prep school sang We eat the plants that grow from the seed to the well-known tune of English Country Garden and Year 6 sang a beautiful song called Harvest of Love. There were some fantastic solos within the song which just shows what talent there is at Polwhele. Nursery and Reception children sang Big Red Combine Harvester, Year 1 and Year 2 enthusiastically sang The World is a Wonderful Place. Pre-prep sang Love Is Something If You Give It Away. Children in Year 7 shared some very moving poems that they had written about issues such as pollution and recycling. Thanks to Mr Caddy for inspiring them to write the poetry for the Harvest assembly. The children listened to the story Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish by Michael Foreman which emphasised the fact that the world belongs to everyone including the creatures that share our planet with us. Mr Main very kindly helped in the Mr Potato Head game with Wilfred Lloyd-King, Henry Piccin- White and Poppy Stevenson. They worked together as a team to show us that when you have a plan and work together it makes such a difference. Thanks also to Mrs Lusty for bringing her stopwatch along with her and supervising the proceedings. Sharing our skills and our passions could help so much in our world. Additionally, sharing the things we have with others such as clothes, food and things that we no longer use but others may find very useful is a very caring thing to do. Peter White from the Truro Food Bank Team came in to share in our Harvest Festival and to talk to the children about the work of Food Bank. He told the children how Truro food bank sorts the food for the people in need and invited them to write a message on some tins that had been brought in. Now a few grateful people will know that Polwhele played its part in helping them through a difficult time. Thank you very much Mr White. I must also thank Malikiah for so willingly taking charge of the power point slides throughout the festival. Thank you so much for all your contributions for Truro Food Bank and we want to thank you all for supporting this in such a generous way. It was great to have that wonderful family vibe going on as well! Sincere thanks Linda Caddy

8 Diet Coke & Mentos Eruption One of the most popular experiments of modern times is the Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser. This experiment is a lot of fun and sure to amaze your friends and family (assuming you do it outside rather than in the living room) What you'll need: Large bottle of Diet Coke About half a pack of Mentos Geyser tube (optional but makes things much easier) Instructions: WEIRD SCIENCE Make sure you are doing this experiment in a place where you won't get in trouble for getting Diet Coke everywhere. Outside on some grass is perfect, please don't try this one in your family sitting room!!! Stand the Diet Coke upright and unscrew the lid. Put some sort of funnel or tube on top of it so you can drop the Mentos in at the same time (about half the pack is a good amount). Doing this part can be tricky if you don't have a specially designed geyser tube Time for the fun part, drop the Mentos into the Diet Coke and run like mad! If you've done it properly a huge geyser of Diet Coke should come flying out of the bottle, it's a very impressive sight. The record is about 9 metres high! What's happening? Although there are a few different theories around about how this experiment works, the most favoured reason is because of the combination of carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the little dimples found on Mentos candy pieces. The thing that makes soda drinks bubbly is the carbon dioxide that is pumped in when they bottle the drink at the factory. It doesn't get released from the liquid until you pour it into a glass and drink it, some also gets released when you open the lid (more if you shake it up beforehand). This means that there is a whole lot of carbon dioxide gas just waiting to escape the liquid in the form of bubbles. Dropping something into the Diet Coke speeds up this process by both breaking the surface tension of the liquid and also allowing bubbles to form on the surface area of the Mentos. Mentos candy pieces are covered in tiny dimples (a bit like a golf ball), which dramatically increases the surface area and allows a huge amount of bubbles to form.

16 EQ EST IAN NEWS This week the ponies had their annual dental appointment with our Vet from Kenwyn Veterinary Practice! Some of our Equestrian Scholars spent their break time watching our Vet Mr Guy Vaughan, as he rasped the ponies teeth, removing any sharp edges with motorised tools, and checking for any abnormalities. The ponies mouths are kept open during the dental procedure, using a special gag, which winches the mouth open and keeps it open for the vet to check and rasp safely. Ponies in the wild eat a more varied diet than domesticated ponies, and this usually includes harder vegetation, such as gorse and hard shrubs. This helps the teeth to wear more evenly than ponies that are stabled with pasture, eating a much softer diet. Sharp ridges can form at the outer edges of the teeth, and over time this can restrict the pony s ability to chew properly, as well as causing discomfort with the bit when being ridden. Although the procedure looks and sounds a little scary, most of the ponies have no problem allowing the vet to work on their teeth. Two of our more sensitive ponies (Missy & Midnight) were sedated in order to allow the Vet to work safely. No complications were found, and all of the ponies can wait another year for their next check! A Big Thank-You to Mr Vaughan for taking the time to explain the procedure to our Scholars, and for showing and explaining the use of all his marvellous dental tools!
