A party of staff and senior children will be departing for France later today. We wish them a safe and enjoyable trip and look forward to hearing all about their experiences when we welcome them back to school later this week. Looking at the week ahead in school, Years 1 and 2 are out at the National Maritime Museum on Friday and having heard snippets of rehearsals I am certain the Nursery and Reception presentation will be just as entertaining and uplifting as last week s concerts in the Prep School. 3 PRE-PREP NEWS Summer Concert May 2018 Year 2 were delighted to be invited to take part in the Summer Concert with the Prep School. Mrs Knight-Bennett asked us to learn some songs with the Prep School and to contribute some items of our own. Year 2 rose to the challenge and entered into learning the songs with enthusiasm. They certainly enjoyed playing their part and performing with the Prep School. In the first half Year 2 sang The world is a wonderful place written by Sha Armstrong and expresses how wonderful our world is and how beautiful it looks with all its colour. They followed this with Rhythm has your two hips moving. Year 2 have been working on playing different ostinato rhythms together as one group. They demonstrated their rhythm on their percussion instruments and then we added them together for our percussion ensemble. In the second half we included two items that we have been working on as part of our topic about Queen Elizabeth II. As a tribute to Prince Harry marrying Megan Markle on Saturday 19 th May and to celebrate this occasion we learnt a round called Wedding Confetti. They then sang the song "Sing" which is a song written by Take That singer-songwriter Gary Barlow and composer Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, and was performed by a number of artists assembled by Gary Barlow from across the Commonwealth, to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. It was performed as part of the Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Concert celebrations on 4 June Mrs Topsey-Eaton and I were very proud of the children in Year 2 as there were only eight of them due to sickness. They performed fantastically and we know they enjoyed it. They particularly enjoyed learning Sing and every one of them sang their part superbly. Well done Year 2! Mrs Caddy and Mrs Topsey-Eaton

4 Nursery and Reception trip to the zoo Yesterday we had a fantastic trip to bring our half termly topic about animals to life by spending the day at Newquay Zoo. With sun cream and sun hats on we were optimistic and hopeful about the day s weather and we were not disappointed. The sun shone down on us all day and made for a wonderful trip. We visited all the enclosures and spotted some of the characters from our Rumble in the Jungle presentation this Friday. We listened to a talk about the Sulawesi Black Crested Macaques and enjoyed meeting all the other animals. We rounded off the day with a well deserved and much enjoyed ice cream before returning to school to tell everyone in Pre-Prep about our adventure.

5 MUSIC NEWS Summer Concert 2018 I am ever so proud of all the children who performed at the Summer Concert last week - thank you for your hard work and effort in creating a magnificent evening. I might be biased, but the audience was treated to a wide range of musical styles and high-quality performances. Year 2 joined us for this year's concert and, as well as singing, they also demonstrated some of their class percussion work: their performances were well-rehearsed and every pupil performed with confidence. Many thanks to Mrs Caddy and Mrs Topsey-Eaton for preparing Year 2 for the concert. The school sang a selection of songs, all with a fantastic range of expression and feeling. All pupils were invited to sing verses or sections of the songs as a solo or duet and those who volunteered sang with clarity and conviction. Well done to Poppy Stevenson and Finlay Lyall for their solos in "Johnnie Groat Says" and to Gwener Wood, Sky Trevena, Jacob Taylor, George Warren, Karma Toms and Jago Nicholas for leading some of the verses in "The Keeper". I must also thank Ethan Lusty (Recorder and Saxophone), Gwener Wood (Voice), Lucia Warden (Voice), Ruby McCullough (Violin), Rosie Warren (Keyboard), and Karma Toms (Voice) for their terrific solo performances. Cornwall County Choir Congratulations to Rupert, Luca, Leo, Jago, Karma and Gwener, who have all been offered places in the Cornwall County Choirs (Cornwall Boys Choir and Cornwall Girls Choir) after successful auditions with Angela Renshaw, Director of the Choirs. 8 Year Five Trip to the Cornwall Islamic Centre On Thursday, 17 th May, Year 5 visited the Cornwall Islamic Centre on the outskirts of Carnon Downs. The visit was designed to enhance the group s knowledge and understanding of last term s study of Muslim beliefs and culture. When we arrived, we were greeted by Tipu Choudhury who warmly welcomed us to the centre. We removed our shoes and then were guided into the worship area, where we sat on the prayer mat carpet. We presented Tipu with the prayer mat designs that we had created at school after studying Islamic design. We explained that we did not expect Tipu to tear up the carpet and have our designs made into real prayer mats, but that he could if he so wished. The children were able to tell Tipu the names of the Minbar step and the Mihrab alcove, and that they both face in the direction of Mecca. Tipu explained about the 5 pillars of Islam, and again members of the class were able to tell Tipu a little about this as well. In connection with this, Tipu explained that it was actually the first day of Ramadan, where Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset. Tipu explained that until a few years ago, Muslims in Cornwall had to travel to Exeter to find a place of worship and to meet with other followers of their religion. So the Cornwall Islamic group bought the old Methodist chapel at Quenchwell Cross, which had been abandoned for several years and required a lot of work to make it useable again. But now the Muslims in Cornwall have somewhere to gather and worship in the county. It reached the time for Tipu to perform the call to worship and it was very interesting to listen to this. Tipu then took us to the room upstairs where women and children often gather. On the top floor was a community space complete with table football and lots of literature explaining various aspects of Islam. We were invited to take anything we wished for school, or for the children to read later. Tipu and his brother then offered the children some sweets, which they seemed to enjoy. We were then shown the Wudu area, where worshippers wash themselves prior to entering the hall for worship. They wash their hands, faces and feet. This symbolically cleanses Muslims from the outside world. We returned to the worship hall and we took some photos before thanking Tipu and his brother (sorry didn t catch his name) for being so welcoming and giving us so much information and insight into an unfamiliar faith and culture. Thanks to Tipu, and to Mrs Keyes, who very kindly drove the other minibus. I think the children found the whole experience interesting and enjoyable. A good bit of practical pre-exam revision. Mr Caddy

10 SPORTS NEWS Match Report for U8 & U9 Rounders v Truro High Tuesday 15 May 2018 On Tuesday 15 May, the girls from years 3 and 4 joined together for their first rounders match of the season. We welcomed the team from Truro High and after our warm up (very important!) the match began. Truro High chose to bat first which meant that Polwhele was fielding. A combination of super fielding, good throwing and catching and wonderful team work kept the number of rounders Truro High scored down to four! At the end of their batting, with half rounders added on for no balls, Truro High had a total of eight and a half rounders. Then it was our turn to bat. We really enjoy batting! And at the end of our turn we had scored an impressive six and a half rounders which grew to eight and a half after the no ball extras. The match ended in a draw and everybody had fun. We will keep practising our bowling and catching and come back stronger next time! Thank you to Mrs Lusty for coaching us and organising the match and to those who came to support us. Ruby McCullough

11 Y5 & Y6 Athletics v Truro Prep Wednesday 9 May All of our Y5 and Y6 children competed in the: 75m sprint, 600m distance race, long jump and vortex throw. Despite the miserable conditions we achieved a good number of results including a few top 4 finishes: 75m 600m Vortex Throw Y5 Girls Daisy Hassell 4 th Daisy Hassell 4 th Y6 Girls Lila Tillyard 2 nd Sky Trevena 4 th Y6 Boys Dan Davey 4 th Ethan Lusty 1 st Fergus Stephen 4 th Finlay Lyall 2 nd After the afternoon we have realised that we all need to work on our long jump. Well done to all of you! U9 Cricket v Truro Prep - Tuesday 15th May We played two matches of cricket against Truro Prep, in the first match we batted first and scored 106 with everyone contributing runs, then we fielded quite well, with Retallack and Leo taking wickets whilst bowling and I got two stumpings as wicket keeper. Truro scored 104, falling just short of our total. In the second match we batted first again and set an even better score of 127, which Truro could not match. This time everyone fielded brilliantly and they only managed to score 119. I think the whole team played very well winning both games, but my man of the match goes to Leo for his excellent fielding, batting and bowling showing what a great all rounder he is. Matthew Lusty, Captain Our team played two tough matches against Truro Prep and despite some good bowling from George and me and some strong batting from Rex and Freddie we lost both games. 21 EQUESTRIAN NEWS Last week, our Equestrian Scholars had an exciting trip to Knightswood Stud near Newquay, to see the yard and stables, and meet the horses, and also to watch Sophie Quarterman school her lovely horse Lolly. Sophie competes at high level dressage, and at the tender age of 20, is a great inspiration to our young Equestrian Scholars - this was a great opportunity for them to see what hard work and determination can achieve! Following is an account of their trip - they each had a different aspect of the visit to write about:- On 16/05/18, all of the Scholars went to Knightswood Stud, to see Sophie Quarterman ride. When we were there, I saw 14 stables - 12 of them were being used, and two empty. 12 of the stables were the same size as our stables, and the other two were massive! Jago Nicholas At Knightswood Stud, we first saw two beautiful horses. One was called Alannah, and one was called Rosie. Rosie was the first one to be born there, and was amazingly friendly (she was giving everybody kisses). Then there was Alannah, and she was also gorgeous. She was the second to be born there. She wasn't as friendly as Rosie, but she was still absolutely charming. I really enjoyed going. Gwener Wood On 16/05/18 the Equestrian Scholars went to Knightswood to see a lady called Sophie, who is a professional dressage rider. When we got there, all the scholars were ecstatic. We walked down to meet the rider and she introduced us to some mares in a field. They were broodmares (female horses that give birth to foals). One of the mares was a palomino mare (consisting of a gold coat and white mane and tail) and the other one was a chestnut mare (consisting of a reddish to brown coat, with a mane and tail the same or lighter in colour than the coat). Normally at this time of your they would be in season - ready to mate to make foals, but because they gave birth to a foal last year, they are having a break. Daisy Hassell On Wednesday the Scholars went to Knightswood Stud and we had so much fun. We saw a foal called Renee who was palomino with white markings. She was very sweet and gentle. No-one has started to ride her yet because she is too young. She is going to be a dressage pony or doing everything else (show jumping/eventing). I wish she was my foal! Jessica Pearce On 16/-05/18 the Equestrian Scholars went to Knightswood Stud. We watched Sophie Quarterman. Her tack was matching and had longer girth straps. The pommel on her saddle was a lot higher than normal pommels. Her bridle had two bits, in order to do more complicated moves. Nerayah Aubrey At Knightswood we watched Lolly the horse. He was amazing at dressage but he was very slobbery! He has to wear some boots and bandages because if he didn't wear the boots, the quick movement of his hindlegs might pull his front shoes off. He also has bandages to support his front legs. He was doing passage, canter pirouettes, half pass, and he was almost cantering as slow as a walk!.cont.

22 Emily Cochrane On 16/05/18 we went to Knightswood Stud. The Scholars saw Sophie Quarterman and Lisa Guy, and they showed us around Knightswood. Sophie did a demonstration about dressage. Her movement in her body was very still and quiet with Lolly. Her hands were lifted and her head was up, and her shoulder, hip and heel were in line with each other! Yasmin Lewis Sophie then finished the week with a visit to Polwhele House on Friday, where the Scholars were treated to a lesson with her! Thank you Sophie for a most enjoyable week!

23 OUT AND ABOUT (Left) Tipper enjoying a ride through the woods on Missy! (Right) Bella on Arnold, Ameera on Missy and Pippa on Polly. PAINT APPREAL If you have any old tins of outdoor paint you no longer need, we would really love to have them down at the stables! We are having a painting day during half term, and we hope to re-paint all of our old wooden show jumping poles and wings, to spruce them up a little! Any colour will be useful as we can mix them up! Why not also bring along a strong plastic sack, and we will say thank you with a bag of lovely wellrotted manure! Your garden will be grateful!
