They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning We will remember them. On Friday all the staff and pupils will be observing the two-minute silence and remembering the end of the First World War and all who gave their lives then and since. Please ensure the children honour this day in the correct way by wearing a poppy. If anyone would like to remember a fallen hero by planting a personalized message in our garden of remembrance (the grassy area between Pre-Prep and Prep), there are still a few remembrance crosses available from Ms van Emden in the school office. Next week we are trialling a new initiative: afternoon and evening celebrations of the creative arts in the Prep School. There will be the usual performances by the Drama Club and the Musical Theatre Club but also the chance all our Prep School pupils to showcase some music, art and storytelling. We will still provide opportunities for all children to be involved in drama performances, but these will take place later in the academic year. We look forward to seeing you in the audience. With best wishes, THE NEWSLETTER OF POLWHELE HOUSE Alex McCullough HEADMASTER headmaster@polwhelehouse.co.uk Karenza whelas karenza POLWHELE HOUSE TRURO CORNWALL TR4 9AE TELEPHONE / FAX office@polwhelehouse.co.uk

PRE-PREP Vikings in Pre-Prep! On the Friday before half term, two Vikings arrived at Polwhele House School and asked to spend the morning with Year 1 and Year 2. There was great excitement as the Vikings made a wonderful entrance to Fehu music, with a flourish of langseax and staff as they announced their names Heilsa! They told the children about their roles, Harald is a prosperous farmer but also trades and raids. Solveig manages the farm when Harold is away each summer and also goes trading with him. The children were then asked to introduce themselves using their chosen Viking name and there we all shouted the Viking welcome Heilsa for each one. The children were given a worksheet Can you speak like a Viking? and they worked together in pairs to complete the task writing in the missing words. They found out about some words the Vikings used. Great fun was had as they shared their knowledge about Viking Longships and carried out some role play as they worked together rowing their boat and tackling storms and taking the boat onto the beach, rowing in rivers and working out how to move the boat from one river to the next using rollers. The children were given the opportunity to understand what trading was and how the Vikings did this. They were shown furs, materials, silver and precious stones. They also made some Viking coins using a coinstriker. The children also learnt about the food that the Vikings would have had and were able to look at them and smell them. Some children were given the opportunity to have a go at using a quernstone. The children ended their exciting morning looking at some Viking weapons. They were all allowed to hold them as they were blunt and followed the instructions they were given about how to hold them safely. We thanked Harald and Solveig by singing a Viking song called Dragon Boats. Harald and Solveig wished us Farr heil! Thank you so much Harold and Solveig for giving the children such a wonderful Viking experience. They really enjoyed their time with you. Mrs Caddy

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM Thank you to those families who have contributed to this act of remembrance. OLAF SCHMID SSGT Olaf Schmid was born on the 11th June 1979 in Truro to Barbara and Hans. He had a younger brother Torben and half brother Greg. He was educated at Polwhele House School until the age of 13 and then at Penair School. Olaf was a choir boy and then Head Chorister at Truro Cathedral. He joined the Army in 1996 as a chef and then trained as a bomb disposal specialist. Olaf served in Yugoslavia, Kosovo before being sent to Afghanistan in June On 31st October 2009 Olaf was defusing a device in Sangin when the device exploded, killing him instantly. He was awarded the George Cross after diffusing 70 explosive devices which undoubtedly saved countless lives. According to many of his army colleagues who visit us, Olaf was a well respected dedicated member of their team who put others before himself. We knew him as a loyal caring friend who was always so much fun and full of mischief. Olaf died a hero saving others and will always be missed and remembered. Kathryn Nicholas SQR LDR John Brookes (known as Brookie) - Rowena Beckly (nee Brookes) Jack Beckly s grandpa served in the second world war: he was a Squadron Leader for 617 squadron also known as the Dambusters. He received a DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) bar and AFC (Air Force Cross) for his role as a bomber pilot in the Second World War. He led the last raid of Bomber command in April 1945 to attack Hitler s bunker, the Berchtesgaden. 318 Lancaster bombers went to obliterate Hitler s Eagle s Nest in Bavaria. Cloud and snow made it difficult to pick out but the Bombers were able to flatten the nearby SS barracks and Bormann s House with their 1000llb bombs. After the war he continued with the RAF until retiring in Sqr Ldr Brookes is 4th from the right, in front of a Lancaster Bomber.

War, war never changes by Finlay Lyall I am behind the trench with my one friend Ever lone and ever tired Just hoping for the war to end I look over the trench just to get a peek But I can t see anything, For there is a body in the way, looking all white and meek It is right in my line of vision Pretty gross, if you ask me, The gunners in their trenches with utmost precision Gunfire flying over our head I start to regret, And I start to dread My only comfort is the mud My friend falls next to me He lands with a muffled thud. I crawl down to his head But it is too late He is already dead. I stand up and do my best Seeking for revenge Then searing pain right down in my chest Just one piece of lead That is all it takes And now I am nearly dead But it makes me think Is life just an empty white room Until you add your paint? War is just a game War, war never changes The only truth is pain

South West Water Visit - 31 October PREP NEWS Samantha Keast from South West Water met Y4 in the art room and gave them a wonderful session about how South West Water cleans our water for our usage. She explained to the children how much water we use each day and showed us different ways in which we can manage our water usage more effectively. The children did a few water filtration experiments and had to determine whose water was the cleanest. The children all received a goodie bag filled with water usage advice and activities as well as a shower timer and a fat collector for the kitchen sinks. Thank you South West Water for a fantastic session!
