Last Thursday morning we received a special visit from three-time Olympic silver medallist and world champion rower, Frances Houghton. She spoke to Pre-Prep and the Prep School separately and was able to share her experiences and explain the sorts of sacrifices she has had to make in order to compete in sport at the highest level. We were delighted to welcome her and came away feeling energised and inspired. Congratulations to Tim Roberts, Dylan Spokes (distinction) and Arthur Trotman on passing ABRSM grade 8 singing. Congratulations also to Walt Dewhurst, Jacob Taylor and George Warren who were admitted to the cathedral choir during the Eucharist just over a week ago. The three of them are now proudly wearing their chorister ties, having received them in assembly. We have had a good initial response to the proposed school family ski trip to Morzine next Easter. 6 Year 8 Geography Trip PREP Everyone deserves a trip to the beach once in a while. Year 8 have been so focussed on their work in the classroom these last few weeks so as a reward we took the opportunity to do some of our revision on the beach. On Thursday afternoon Year 8, Mrs Keyes and Miss Topsey went to Porth beach, Newquay. We enjoyed our picnic lunch and a run around before getting down to some hands on revision. One group worked with Miss Topsey on river processes, creating dams and meanders in the river and observing the effects. The other group worked through a set of key diagrams that are needed for Common Entrance. Each group demonstrated their knowledge by drawing the diagrams in the sand. We finished up with an Owls and Herons who dares wins competition. A good, fun sandy time had by all; thank you Year 8 for your company and super engagement. Thank you also to Miss Topsey for accompanying us. Year 6 Geography Models Year 6 have been learning about the structure of the earth in Geography and were set the challenge of creating a 3D model. Some super efforts (big and small) came back. Below are a few examples: Fidget Spinners Further to assembly announcements fidget spinners are not allowed in school; thank you for your help and cooperation with this matter. Year 5-8 Websites In Coding this term Years 5-8 have been continuing with their code.org course but have also been given the option of exploring website builder WIX to make a simple website. Some of the results have been impressive. Ask your son or daughter to show you what they have done. Year 8 have been creating Geography revision websites as their focus. Mrs Keyes

ASSEMBLY THOUGHTS: Welcome back to school was Mr McCullough s message to the school on Monday morning. We started our assembly singing the hymn When a knight won his spurs. This hymn reminds us of St George the patron saint of England. Mr McCullough asked us what we knew about St George. Images of slaying the dragon were given and facts about St George from other countries. St George represents to us goodness overcoming darkness and helps us to learn two key lessons: 1. To help those in need. 2. That a person of great faith and belief can achieve great things. We were blessed with a double helping of Mr Caddy this week for both Wednesday and Thursday s assembly! Wednesday s assembly was a surprise reveal of this year s school production (insert drum roll): POL (WHELE) DARK Mr Caddy gave us the synopsis of the plot as well as a rich description of the background and the characters. Pupils listened with excitement and it was the talk of the school for much of the rest of the day. Canon Alan spoke to us on Wednesday about rules in an interesting assembly focussed around the 10 commandments. Thursday brought two more visitors to the prep school. First we were entertained by the Truro School barber shop group who were making a return visit to Polwhele. It was so wonderful to see 11 old Polwhelers in the group. The music was fantastic and we were treated to three individual pieces. A big thank you to Truro School for coming to visit us. On Thursday Mr Caddy spoke to us about the marathon. We learnt a bit about the history of the race as well as some notable stories and figures that are associated with it. The marathon is such a great sporting event but its effects are more wide reaching. We can learn about perseverance, teamwork, kindness, helping each other, mental strength and physical endurance.

ASSEMBLY THOUGHTS (cont d) 3 Time Olympic Silver Medallist and World Champion rower visits Polwhele - Thursday 4 May Both the Prep and Pre-Prep were treated to an inspiring visit from Frances Houghton last Thursday. Frances shared her Olympic and World Champion success stories with the children and spoke about the hard work and dedication involved in achieving the many successes in her rowing career. Below are some wise pieces of advice that Frances shared with us: *Even if 99% of you feels you can't achieve your goal hang on to that 1% that still believes you can, and push through. *Teamwork is vital to any success and we all need to support each other even if that means adjusting our technique to suit the team s needs and goals. *A good night s rest and a healthy breakfast are vital to anyone's daily success. *'Go, Grow & Glow' should be part of all of our meals. (carbs, protein & vitamins/ vegetables). At the end of each session Frances spent a lot of time answering the children's numerous questions. The children were also encouraged to try on some of her Olympic tracksuits and hold her medals. Both the children and staff were truly inspired by her visit and we wish her the best of success as she settles in Cornwall! Mrs Lusty Lost Property These items have been in the school office for a little while now does anyone recognise them please? Jago Nicholas has mislaid his tracksuit bottoms, which are named if anyone has picked them up by mistake? Many thanks!

Polwhele House School Summer Production 2017 Pol(whele)dark This year s production is based on the Poldark television programme, with a bit of Polwhele history sprinkled in the plot. Demelza is worried. Her husband Ross is out working in the field with his shirt ON! This has never happened in all the time they ve been married (two whole series!). She sends Jud out to fetch the doctor, who turns out to be a locum standing in for Dr Ennis. Ross troubling behaviour is, it seems, caused by the stress of not being able to find tin down his mine, Wheal Barrow. His worst fears are realised when one of his investors, George Warleggan, insists on the return of his investment. Demelza stands on the cliff tops staring out to sea for quite some time but this has no effect on the situation. Ross is summoned to debtors court, where a panel of judges including a woman! (Yes a woman!) sentence him to a spell of hard labour. Much to George Warleggan s annoyance, Richard Polwhele, of Polwhele House, Truro, steps in as guarantor. This buys Ross some time but could mean that Polwhele may well end up in prison alongside of Ross if the mine fails to become profitable soon. After that all sorts of mayhem occurs. Smugglers appear on the moonlit beach because of a clause in their contract; Warleggan tries to tempt Ross workforce away from the mine; Jud finds out that the tin required does not have baked beans inside it; The Tommy Knockers get up to mischief; almost everyone ends up in the mine; Demelza finds a way to make her hair blow in the breeze even when there is no wind. If you want any more detail you might have to come to one of the performances. Songs featured include new versions of Going Underground by The Jam; The theme from (mine) Shaft!; and Cornish songs such as Lamorna; Camborne Hill; and Trelawny. Watch this space for any requests for help, props or costumes. I will start by asking if any of you ladies might have a stylish 17 th /18 th century gown suitable for Elizabeth Warleggan to wear? If the answer is yes and you would be willing to lend it to us, we would be very grateful. Alternatively, if you wanted to knit one, or make one by some other means, please let me know. Mr Caddy

SPORTS NEWS Polwhele House School Sports Colours Lent Term 2017 Full Colours - These are awarded to Year 8 pupils who have shown exceptional skill and outstanding dedication in their sport whilst at Polwhele House School. Half Colours - These are awarded to pupils who have shown exceptional skill and outstanding dedication in their sport whilst at Polwhele House School. They will have: *Shown high levels of dedication and determination to succeed in that sport. *Maintained a highly positive attitude towards his or her sport in both training and matches. *Demonstrated good leadership skills and qualities. *Been a good role model' for the rest of the school. FOOTBALL Full Colours Charlie Beckly - A classy winger who has come along in leaps and bounds this season with his intelligent movement into space and cultured crossing and interplay. If Charlie continues to develop he has a bright footballing future ahead of him. Polwhele s Jesse Lingard Thomas Luke - A tenacious pacey forward who never gives the opposition defence a moment to dwell on the ball. Thomas has worked hard on his ability to run off the shoulder of the last defender and finish with lethal accuracy. Thomas has been a tireless outlet for the Polwhele team this season. Polwhele s Jamie Vardy Lucio Mombelli-Armondi - A tough tackling defender or defensive midfielder who covers every blade of grass during the game. Lucio has made vital interceptions with consistency for the good of the team and gives opposition attackers nightmares with his hard tackling. Polwhele s Ngolo Kante William Piccin-White - The magician in midfield, William makes Polwhele s attacking tempo tick. Fantastic interplay with his team mates, great close control and a cool finisher, this kid has it all in the final third. Polwhele s David Silva

Thomas Reed - Another hard working tough tackling defensive player, Tom has worked really hard on his positioning this season and has done a great job of marking opposition players out of the game with consistency. If in trouble Tom has incredible pace to get himself back on goal side. Polwhele s Chris Smalling Tim Roberts - An opposition coach once asked me if there were two Roberts twins playing, such is Tim s ability to be everywhere all of the time. Breaking up the play in defensive midfield, bursting forward with the ball, scoring from range, Tim is an unbelievably gifted footballer. Polwhele s Yaya Toure Dylan Spokes - Dylan has developed his all round game a great deal this season and has been a fantastic outlet in the wide forward and wing positions for Polwhele House this season. Blessed with pace and a great cross Dylan has been real asset to the side. Polwhele s Eden Hazard Arthur Trotman - Sam Allardyce would be proud! Arthur is a great no nonsense defender; he works hard to get himself between the attacker and the goal and then makes sure the ball ends up somewhere safe (even if it is row z). A real asset to the team and another who has progressed excellently this season. Polwhele s Robert Huth Ruben Wheeler - Ruben has worked hard on his ball skills this season and his hard work has been paying off with him showing some lovely touches in an attacking midfield role. Ruben is capable of both running the channels and carrying the ball through the middle of the park. Polwhele s Willian Ethan Willis - The Rock at the heart of the Polwhele defence, Ethan has shown determination and great skill to develop into a hugely reliable and effective defender for the Polwhele team. Ethan s positional sense allows him to negate the threat from attackers who would outpace a less intelligent defender. Polwhele s John Terry SWIMMING - Half Colours Pax McDowell Pax was selected to represent the South West ISA swimming team this year at the London Olympic pool and swam in the U10 boys freestyle relay. NETBALL - Full Colours Hannah Moses Hannah has approached all games sessions and matches with enthusiasm and has played a vital role in all our netball matches over the past few years in her Goal Defence position. She uses her height to her advantage, helping her team regain possession of the ball in many tricky defensive situations. HOCKEY - Full Colours Hannah Moses Hannah has continued to make good progress on the hockey pitch during her final year at Polwhele. She has made a big effort to go towards the ball and get stuck into the tackle, clearing the ball up to the midfield.

Charlie Beckly Charlie has been a solid in defence during all the matches he has played, always showing good form and determination on the pitch. He tackles the task of defending our D with great concentration, always trying to clear the ball hard and fast. Tim Roberts Tim has played a vital role in all the hockey fixtures he has been involved in during his time at Polwhele. He has approached his captaincy with great responsibility and enthusiasm. It is always very tempting for a skilful midfield player to dominate a game Tim has not been tempted. He has played with maturity, understanding that part of his role as captain is to promote the development of his fellow players during match play. A very talented midfield player, watch out Team GB! William Piccin-White William has been our senior goalkeeper for 2 years and has made fantastic progress in the goals. His good agility and fast reflexes have enabled him to clear almost every single attempt at goal during his time in the box, including penalties. His enthusiastic approach to this very challenging position on the pitch is infectious, spurring his team mates on during tricky situations. A very talented keeper; watch out Team GB! CROSS-COUNTRY Half Colours Jack Beckly, Ethan Lusty & Bertie Tillyard: Jack, Ethan and Bertie were selected for the ISA South West team to run at the Nationals at Princethorpe College in February which, unfortunately owing to bad weather was cancelled. Jack and Ethan were also selected to run for the Peninsula Cross-Country team at the Cornwall Primary Schools Cross-Country Championships in March. Full Colours Hannah Moses and William Piccin-White Hannah and William have had a very successful Cross-Country season which included 1 st place for William at the ISA SW trials and 2 nd place for Hannah at the ISA SW trials resulting in both of them being selected for the ISA South West team to run at the Nationals at Princethorpe College. Both runners took part in the Coose Trannack Cross-Country with both achieving silver medal finishes at this event. 16 EQUESTRIAN NEWS Everyone has been enjoying the spell of good weather, and the ponies have had a lovely time out and about in the woods for some hacks, with the wild garlic in full bloom, and the pretty bluebells creating a thick carpet across the woodland and grounds. Above are Isla and Finlay enjoying themselves on a woodland hack with Polly and Arnold. Jacob and Polly are pictured right, with the colourful primroses and bluebells providing a pretty backdrop - it really is the loveliest time of year, and we're so lucky to be able to ride in such beautiful surroundings!

We also had a recent double birthday celebration, and as always - Arnold led the singing in his favourite party hat! We hope Lucia and Evie both enjoyed their birthday celebrations. Below, we have Ruby and Oscar hacking through the woods. And below left, Edward and Evelyn with Arnold and Polly.
