I hope everyone had a relaxing and successful half term and feels refreshed and ready for the challenges of the final part of the school year. I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Charlotte Wheele who will succeed Mr Gent in the bursary on Monday 18 June. Mrs Wheele brings much relevant management and school-based experience to Polwhele and we very much look forward to welcoming her into the school community. Looking ahead to the last day of term, the choristers are involved in a live BBC Radio 3 broadcast of evensong on the afternoon of Wednesday 11 July. Therefore, we are going to move the Prep School presentations to the morning to tie in with drop off rather then pick up. We still plan to round off the day with a cream tea for parents on the gravel car park. I am sorry if this means you have to alter your plans for the day but I m sure that you can appreciate the importance of having all the children present. With best wishes, Alex McCullough HEADMASTER headmaster@polwhelehouse.co.uk THE NEWSLETTER OF POLWHELE HOUSE Tuesday 12 June 1.30pm U8 & U9 Mixed Rounders v St Petroc s (a) REMINDER: Please could parents put sunscreen cream on their children prior to coming to school. 4 PRE-PREP NEWS RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE On the final Friday morning of the half term something strange was going on in Pre- Prep. The Reception classroom had changed completely the tables had disappeared and had been replaced by a jungle! There were vines hanging form the ceiling, tropical flowers adorning the walls and palms all over the place. It could mean only one thing - it was time for the Nursery and Reception presentation of Rumble in the Jungle. Over the half term we learned all about animals. We studied mammals, reptiles, fish and amphibians and had a fantastic time at Newquay zoo on the Monday before. In our English lessons we studied the text Rumble in the Jungle. We learned the story and practised saying our words with loud, clear voices in preparation for our performance. The children (and staff!) were very excited as a huge audience crammed into the Reception classroom awaiting the entrance of our very youngest performers. At 9.00am we donned our head dresses and stepped onto the stage. Every single child was amazing. They all sang with enthusiasm, stood beautifully and spoke with great clarity and enjoyment. The Nursery children set the scene by telling us all about what we might expect to find if we went to the jungle and then we heard from the Reception children disguised as a chimpanzee, a lion, a zebra, a hippo, a giraffe, an elephant, a gorilla, a gazelle and a crocodile, alongside a snake, a rhino, a leopard and a tiger! We finished by singing a song called Mammals, which the children love! We are extremely proud of all of the children and think they were fantastic! Well done Nursery and Reception!

PRE-PREP NEWS cont. Some children in Year 1 made a fantastic mosaic which I thought would be lovely to share in the newsletter. The children were Wilfred Lloyd-King, Tristan Cochrane, Paul Hill and Freddie Sexton. Mrs Caddy

PREP NEWS Anderson Shelters In History, Year 6 have been exploring various aspects of World War II. As a homework task, the children were given opportunity to create an Anderson shelter from any materials they wished. As in the past, the class produced some great models and were very inventive and imaginative in their ideas. Something that has not happened in previous years is that someone created an edible Anderson shelter. Nerayah created a sponge roll with jam and cream, which when covered in chocolate made a very effective looking shelter. I m not sure how safe I would feel inside a sponge cake shelter during the Blitz, but if it was as tasty as Nerayah s was, I d be willing to take my chances. Well done to Nerayah, and the whole of Year 6 for all the excellent Anderson shelter designs. Mr Caddy

FRENCH TRIP 2018: Upper School French Trip 2018 Oh, what a fabulous time we had on the trip to France! To quote La Plage Boys it was Fun,fun fun all the way. We met our brilliant driver, Ryan, at around 6.30 on Tuesday evening, and boarded our plush mini bus. Before anyone could ask How much longer til we get there? more than a dozen times, we were driving on to the ferry in Plymouth. We found our cabins and settled down for the night. We woke the next day just as we were approaching Roscoff and after the usual border control formalities, we made for the older part of Roscoff for our picnic breakfast and a first chance to try out the children s conversational French at the harbourside market. Zack was clearly fluent enough and hungry enough to purchase a French stick and enough cooked jambon to feed a small army. Fully refreshed, we returned to the bus and made our way to Quimper, where Madame Fergus gave the children some tasks to complete in their booklets. Again, they were able to practise their conversational Francais. After finally persuading Nerayah not to try and kidnap one of the miniature ponies in the town square, we had a picnic lunch which was followed by a trip to the walled town at Concarneau. When we arrived at Concarneau there was a huge ferris wheel in the car park and a group of the children decided to give it a go. From the top, George thought about seeing if his Go-Pro camera might bounce gently, but, last second, he changed his mind and aborted the experiment. No amount of euros would persuade the operator to stop the wheel with part of our group at the top, so when they descended we all made our way into the walled town. This was a truly magical world full of sweet shops and ice cream parlours. Pure heaven! There were also some quaint buildings, little squares and of course, the battlements of the wall to visit. We all stopped at a creperie and the children ordered their own apres midi snack in French. I am not entirely sure that they all got what they wanted but everyone seemed satisfied. Apparently, Crepe a la Nutella is a local delicacy. We left Concarneau and made our way to the Centre d herbergement de Brest (Giggle giggle), we soon settled into our own private corridor. Some children quite naturally moaned that the accommodation did not quite match the Ritz, but they were prepared to semi-slum it for a few days. We went down to the dining room for our evening meal, where we met the school sharing our accommodation. There were 120 children from a school in Truro s twin town, Morlaix. I know what are the chances!

Then came the first truly terrifying moment for some of our party: They were serving FRENCH food. They have this peculiar food in France called carrots. Some of the children were willing to risk their lives by eating the cuisine, while others decided not to take the chance. Dinner with the French school gave the Polwhelers another opportunity to practise their conversational French again. This proved quite successful for both groups and soon a (cliché alert) Entente Cordiale was in full swing. One lad who shall remain nameless called Dan Davey was particularly successful in his cordial ententes and was soon exchanging names and numbers with a young French lady. This led to Dan spending much of the following day choosing a present for Amelie, fair maiden of Morlaix. More of this later. After the evening meal we went to the nearby beach where the children clambered on a rope mountain, tried to launch Zack s rugby ball into orbit and, in George s case, covering his legs in some horrid looking stuff which made him resemble the creature from the black lagoon. Madame Fergus insisted that I run the kilometre to the other side of the beach to check out if the building in the distance was the aquarium we were visiting the next day. I did; it wasn t. Soon we returned to the accommodation and prepared for our first night s sleep in France. Unfortunately, due to high excitement and an immersion in all things Gallic, the group in the next room to mine were no longer able to understand English, and my French is woefully inadequate and so I had to resort to talking very loudly and very slowly in order to convey the need for them to settle down and be quiet. They were of course, mortified at their own inability to grasp the need to follow instructions and in recompense they volunteered to clean the bus at the end of Thursday s travels. What kind, thoughtful boys. We did find Oceanapolis the next day in the opposite direction to which Madame Fergus had sent me the previous evening! This is one of Europe s best aquarium attractions. It is divided into three sections: The tropical area where several species of shark cruise through the water accompanied by tuna, turtles, octopi and many other colourful species. We even found Nemo. The Polar section featured penguins, who looked clumsy and awkward on land, but we could see them under water where they moved with unbelievable grace and speed. We also saw sea lions expertly performing the Brest stroke (Titter, titter). The Breton section featured less extraordinary sea life, but was still very interesting and it did lead to the shop where we could purchase more precious and priceless trinkets. George declared on the Friday bus journey home that Oceanapolis was the best part of the trip. He did not clarify whether he spoke unilaterally or for the whole group, but it seemed that everyone had a great time at the aquarium. The apres-midi adventure brought about a change of pace as we visited Chateau Kerjean. We were given a very detailed history of the chateau. We got a real flavour of the life of the Barbier family, who ran the estate in the days just prior to the French Revolution. We saw how the rich lived, and how the servants served. It was an enthralling afternoon, even if it did remind me a little too much of home.

The shop at Kerjean sold many goodies. Dan took the opportunity to buy some soap, which we understood was a present for the young lady from Morlaix. At dinner, the question punctuated the meal of yes FRENCH food: Would Dan have the courage to hand over the soap to the French Belle or not? The answer during the beetroot and apple salad starter was no! The answer during the Bolognaise was no! The answer during the Crepe pudding was YES! Dan presented his soap to a somewhat overwhelmed and stunned young lady whose complexion now matched the beetroot of the starter. After the shock, Amelie regained her composure quite remarkably. She said, in equally remarkable fluent English, that she loved her present tres much. The meal ended and both parties returned to their own areas for a more peaceful evening s sleep. The next day the children took on the almost impossible task of tidying their rooms. Another highlight of the trip: Fergus was introduced to the delights of the vacuum cleaner. He tried to conceal, but I could tell that he was enthralled by his first experience of operating heavy machinery. Mum and Tilly will be delighted! Ryan, ever accommodating, took us to a local Leclerc hypermarket to spend the last of our euros. This was an enjoyable hour, once we explained to Lila and Sky that they could not make any purchases from the Wine Hall. We stopped for another picnic lunch at Kersalliou beach. As it was Ryan s birthday we gave him a card and a little present to help him celebrate and to say thank you for being such a great driver. We set off again and before anyone could say How long before we get there? for more than a dozen times, we were back at Roscoff ready to board the ferry home. We dropped Daniel off with his mum in the car park, as they were staying in France for half term. The children appraised Dan s mum of his romantic adventures. The rolling of her eyes suggested that nothing surprised her where her son was concerned. An impending shortage of cocoa beans led to panic buying of chocolate from the ferry shop. This was initially offset by Josh buying a tin of sardines, but on closer inspection, these were also made of chocolate. I wonder what sort of person came up with making chocolate sardines? Before anyone could say How much longer til we reach Plymouth more than two dozen times, we arrived in Plymouth. Quick disembarkation led to equally swift processing at border control and we were on our way. Before anyone one could ask How much further? more than a dozen times, we were on the familiar territory of the school s gravel car park, where eager parents were waiting to collect their tired but enriched offspring. Once again Madame Fergus had organised a brilliant trip to France with meticulous precision. I don t know how she does it. So much was crammed into the few days we were away; so much variety; so much interest; so much fun. There was also, obviously a lot of opportunities to practise their French speaking and to learn much more about the country. Thanks to Madame Fergus, the children will have a memory that will stay with them forever and an experience that will continue to enrich their lives for many years to come. Mr Caddy
