A U T U M N T E R M - I S S U E 8 W/E 16TH NOVEMBER 2018 CHRISTMAS IS COMING TO BRONTE! You should have received your Christmas Pack this week full of all the information for all our events. Please send reply slips back as soon as possible. Many thanks AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS There will be no Railway Club next Tuesday, 20th November, as Mr Kerr is away. There will be no clubs on Wednesday, 21st November, due to Parents Evening.

Nursery have taken their maths outside this week! We have been finding numbers outside and counting objects and making sets. We have been comparing set sizes and using words like 'most' and 'least'. Mrs Lawrance has been busy in the playground building tower bridge! Our letter this week is 'e'. We looked at the difference between a boiled and a raw egg and made our own Elmers after listening to some of his stories! Reception's maths has been all about the number 5. They have been recording number 5 in as many ways as they can find. Drawing around their hand was a popular way but there were also some more inventive ways showing the different ways of making 5 eg 4 and 1 and 3 and 2! Reception H have been working together in groups to build a marble run. We had to listen to each other s ideas and try to fit the pieces together so that the marble could roll from the top to the bottom. We had to adapt our work sometimes, learning from mistakes we might have made, in order to build the biggest and longest run. We also had lots of fun in the process.

In Year 1 the children worked in pairs to learn some skipping rhymes in class. They performed the poems really well. They then went outside to practise their skipping, keeping their jumps in time with their rhyme. Year 2 have been scientists this week. A naughty cat had been knocking all the drinks off the table and the children helpfully agreed to find out which paper towel would be the best to use to mop up the spills. They thought of ways to test which was the most absorbent and then carried out their investigation recording their findings. Each group had to work as a team with as little adult support as possible. They all did a fantastic job! As part of our ICT lessons Year 2 have been making music using the 2Sequence app on Purple Mash. They learnt about making music digitally and to explore, edit and combine sounds. They also explored how music can be used to express feelings and they created their own tunes to depict a particular feeling.

Year 3 have been learning about joints and muscles this week. We made the joints out of plasticine to see the difference between four different types of joint. On Thursday we then made muscles and models of a moving arm. Year 4 had a fantastic trip to Flamingo Land to do a workshop as an African Ranger. The children had to look at all of the clues to guess the African animal. We had a tour of the zoo and found out lots of interesting information and facts about the animals and we even had our own sea lion show as an extra treat. Marvin the sea lion stole the show!!

Year 5 have been busy this week writing postcards. The children tried to imagine that they were Maia, the main character from the book that we are reading Journey to the River Sea. Maia has moved to live with relatives in the Amazon and the children were asked to write a postcard to the friends she left behind. Some fantastic postcards were written, with the children thinking really carefully about what Maia would like to say to her friends. Year 5 had great fun learning about building fires in Bushcraft this week. They went on to try and build their own with varying degrees of success. Nevertheless, Mr Hemingway was very impressed with everyone! George in 5S received the Good Work Award for his postcard, which contained my favourite sentence the only animals here are the Carter s themselves! Year 6 had a fantastic start to their new topic about the First World War when author, Tom Palmer visited. He talked about his latest book Armistice Runner which is about two characters. One is a fell runner who fought in the 1st world war, and the other is a keen runner today. The Lake District setting was of particular interest, as the children remembered their trip there in Year 5. Many Year 6s bought the new novel and are finding it hard to put down! We had lots of fun today guessing the amount of sweets in a jar and naming a teddy bear. Everyone enjoyed crazy hair day! So far we have raised 816 for this worthy cause. Thank you

On Friday the U11B (red) team had a match at Harrogate Ladies College. We played against High Field Prep, who won 20. We had excellent defending from Ella-Grace, Tilly and Karmjeet. There was some brilliant attack from Tara and Helaina. Some excellent determination from Grace Roy. My lady of the match is Tara as it was her first match for us and she was amazing at finding space. Well done to every one who played. Thank you to Miss Stega for organising this wonderful event and Miss Pearson for coaching us. By Grace Huntington On Friday 9th of November the U11A had a netball match against Highfield Prep, the only team that beat us last year. It was a tough game but we managed to win There was some great shooting from Nicole and Natalie some outstanding backup, spaces and defending from Scarlett some amazing attacking from all of our wings (Harlei-Jade, Olivia L and Scarlett) and of course there was some unbelievable defending from our brick wall (Belle) and Sarah. My lady of the match goes to Scarlett for being all round fabulous. thank you to Ms Stega for coaching us and thank you to our mascot Macey for great support hopefully you will back soon. By Pippa Green Bronte House played Harrogate Ladies College away in Harrogate last Friday. Despite being absolutely freezing, everyone played their best. The shooters were amazing and kept us ahead in all four quarters. Lovely passing through the centre of the court and the defenders were ace. The person who stood out for me was Maiya Gowon; she rocketed up the court intercepting the ball and passing it on and she can jump higher than the Eiffel Tower!! Well done to everyone! By Lorna Kerr Great exercise on Friday afternoon playing against Richmond House. We had two mixed Bronte U10 teams who played against Richmond House and each other. Great fun had by all! On Friday 9th November the under 10A team played against Harrogate ladies college. We played really well to start with and we re a few goals ahead but then Harrogate made a come back. Isla got lots of goals and Lois was really good at getting into spaces. My lady of the match was Megan for some great defending. Overall we won 9-3. Thank you to Mrs Couzens for coaching us. By Martha Wilson. Congratulations to Pen-Y-Ghent who won the house rugby tournament on Monday afternoon in front of a healthy crowd of supporters. They were unbeaten in their matches, and showed great sportsmanship throughout the afternoon. Year 3 girls played at Richmond House on Tuesday 13th November. We played 4 matches winning 2 and losing 2. We played against Moorfield, Richmond House, Westfield House & Gateways. We enjoyed our first games. Well done to all who played. By Penny Lofthouse (Captain) On Saturday the U11 Bronte House rugby team travelled to QEGS Wakefield to take part in the annual Harrison Cup. The boys won two of their group games with fine performances against BGS and QEGS, scoring 3 excellent team tries during these two matches. Tougher games then ensued against the eventual winners Warwick, and Birkdale, though the boys never gave up and played well in both matches. It was then into the afternoon session, with two tough encounters against Manchester Grammar and RGS Newcastle. The Manchester game was the day s highlight - a thrilling 3 all draw where the boys came back from 3 tries to 1 down! Well done to all the boys who represented Bronte House so superbly, we are very proud of you. The Under 8 and Under 9 rugby teams travelled to Ashville College in Harrogate on Tuesday to play their latest fixtures of the season. In glorious sunshine the boys lit up the occasion with all teams playing some champagne rugby. Passing skills, great footwork and super sportsmanship were to be seen on all 4 pitches, and enjoyment levels were high for both players and spectators alike. It was then off for a chat about the game, Christmas presents and a thousand other topics with our hosts over sausage and chips! What a super afternoon s rugby and well done to everyone who represented Bronte House so superbly on and off the pitch.
