PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers We are all part of a very talented community and I am very happy to be highlighting a number of significant achievements in this newsletter. SUCCESS FOR SIAN WHEELER AT THE NETBALL SPORTS AWARDS Congratulations to Sian Wheeler who was named Primary Player of the Year at the Wairarapa Netball Sports Awards on Tuesday night, at the Copthorne. This is a very fitting accolade for Sian who is a determined and skillful player whose leadership is evident within her teams. Among her achievements this year are: Year Eight Wairarapa Representative. Co-captain of the Year Eight Representative team. Captain of Chanel Intermediate A team. Member of Chanel Diamonds (Years Nine and Ten team). Well done Sian! We are very proud of you and we expect to hear more of you and your future sporting achievements. The photo shows Sian with her trophies and the evening s guest speaker, Irene Van Dyk. MORE SUCCESS IN HOCKEY Last Thursday, our 1 st XI girls hockey team played their semi-final against Wairarapa College. The Waicol. team was a boys team with one girl in it. Our girls team have had a good season and have improved throughout the season. While they lost the semi final 3-2, they have been beaten earlier in the year by the same team 9-0. This is an indication of how much the team has improved. The semi-final was a very close game and I was impressed with the Chanel College team as they played the more constructive hockey throughout. However, it was just at vital times the physical strength of the boys did make a difference. The team has been well coached during the season by Maxine Neilsen and Jodie Hart. Their efforts are reflected in the way the team has performed during the year. We are very appreciative of the time you both have put into the team and we thank you for this. Congratulations on a great season and with such a young side the future is looking bright. YEARS SEVEN AND EIGHT HOCKEY VICTORY On Monday evening our Years Seven and Eight hockey team played in the final of the B Grade Section of the primary hockey. This is a grade higher than we have played in, in recent years so to make the final is an exceptional achievement. The team played very well in the final, winning the game 2-1. Winning the final was made that much more satisfying as they had been well beaten earlier in the season by the same team, Kahutara. The team has improved during the season and this would not have been achieved without the support of the Coach and Manager Fluer and Murray Jane. Thank you both. Below are some photos of a very proud and satisfied team. Congratulations and well done.

PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE continued SECONDARY SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT We had two teams travel to New Plymouth to compete in netball and football during tournament week. Both teams benefited from the experience with the boys 1 st XI football achieving some very good results: Scotts College - drew 2-2. Hamilton Boys HS - lost 7-3. Opunake HS - win Hauraki Plains College - win 4-2. Francis Douglas College - win 9-1. They finished the tournament a very creditable 9 th out of 16. Congratulations to the football team who have had a very good season having already won the local Secondary Schools Competition. Thank you to the coaches, Kelvin O Reilly and Phil Logan and manager, Natalie Lane. The netball team did not do so well on the results front finishing the week without a win. However, the growth that occurs as a result of going away and testing yourself against other schools and realising that you can compete against them, makes the week away worthwhile for that reason alone. Thank you to the coaches, Tracey Lupton and Mata Emile and the Manager, Mel Megaw, for providing this opportunity for our students. AIMS GAMES John Rogan, competed in these games finishing a very creditable 17 th in the 100m breaststroke with a personal best time and given there were over 100 entries in the race, this is a great performance. The Aims Games were held between the 15 th and 17 th of September in Tauranga, an annual national sporting competition for intermediate students. This result shows that students from Chanel College can compete on the national stage and hold their own with the best in the country. Well done John, we will follow you throughout the season. SCHOOL DONATION RECEIPTS Donation receipts were ed out on the 5 th of September for the last financial tax year. Donations for the school activity fee and the PTFA donation can be claimed for a rebate (see IRD website for the information and to download the form). If you did not receive the , let us know and we can post a receipt out to you. Please contact Sue Cruz on accounts@chanelcollege.school.nz Donations can also be claimed for the last four years. If you would like those receipts please contact Sue on the address above or on the school number (06) SENIOR REPORTS The senior reports are about to be sent home, tomorrow, Friday the 15 th of September. These reports are very important for senior students as they provide guidance as to where the student is and what they need to do to gain the qualifications they need to progress to the next step in their education. As parents, guardians and caregivers, you have a very important role to play in supporting your children as the end of the year approaches. You need to make sure that your children are revising for the externals and taking advantage of Homework Club, especially if it is recommended in their report. It is not too late for any student to turn around their result for the year. As happened during the practice examinations earlier in the year, students will not be released on study leave at the end of the year, if they have incomplete work or outstanding work. A concerted effort over the next few weeks can make all the difference to final results when they arrive in the mail in January of next year. If you have any concerns please contact your child s form teacher and / or subject teacher.

PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE continued FORTNIGHTLY REPORTS The table below records the latest round of the fortnightly reports with the top and most improved students in each year level being acknowledged. I congratulate all the students who have worked hard to achieve this recognition. Well done. If you are after some uniform items or have some to on sell, then keep an eye out in the next newsletter and Facebook for details of how. FUNDRAISING WE NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE With the Wharenui upgrade underway we are now working on plans to reinstall and upgrade the junior playground including the painted ground games and by adding more outdoor seating. Your school donation this year will go towards this. Our next fundraising activity is an inside / out raffle in which we hope to be able to put together a raffle of groceries, cleaning products and gardening items etc. For this to happen we would like to ask that each family donate a non-perishable item please. Thank you. Donations can be left in the box in the school foyer prior to the end of term. Raffle tickets will be given out to all children at the beginning of Term Four with the raffle being drawn early November. WORKING BEE We will be holding a working bee to help with these projects. Keep an eye out in future newsletters and Facebook for more information.

YEARS SEVEN AND EIGHT HOCKEY Team Congratulations to the Years Seven and Eight hockey team who were winners of the Primary B2 Competition. The final game was against Kahutara on Monday night. Many thanks to coaches Fleur and Murray Jane and Team Manager, Kevin Harvey. This a great result as a step up from being C grade for the last few years. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many coaches and managers who have put in a huge amount of time and effort over the season. Without your assistance many teams would not be able to take part in winter sport, so we are very grateful. Ms Duncan will be in the gym at lunchtimes next week for winter sport uniform collection. Please return all sport uniforms in a clean and tidy state. Thank you. FIRST XI HOCKEY TEAM Last Tuesday, our "Barbarian" 1st XI hockey team played their final game of the season against Kuranui. Unfortunately, they had a loss of 3-1, coming third in the last game of the round. They needed to be fourth to make the finals, it came down to the two preceding games to find out their fate. With both fourth and fifth winning, it meant Chanel s final place was fifth by one point. The team came together at the end of April with nine Chanel students, three Makoura students, one Kura student, one Saint Matthew's student and a student from Saint Mary s School. They had three trainings before playing their first game and managed to maintain a placing within the top four for most of the season. The team received a huge amount of support from coaches, Mark Allingham and Craig Nielsen, and their sponsors. They received $ worth of gear from City Care, a full set of hoodies all paid for by Fulton Hogan and hundreds of dollars worth of pizza from Hell Pizza. Congratulations to all players for doing so well, and a huge thank you to all those who made it possible.

YEARs seven And EIght Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers Tena koutou katoa. Welcome to Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. We have got an interesting week planned with a lot of Te Reo and other activities which will culminate in the students making Manu Tukutuku (traditional Maori kites). We are hoping to have them completed so we can have a kite flying competition on Friday. We are going to be very busy as it is also Social Justice Week and Cultural Week. The theme for Social Justice Week is Weaving Bonds of Belonging: Knowing our Neighbours. We will be learning about how the gifts or taonga, that God gives us, can be used for the work of the Church, to help bring about the reign of tika, rangimarie and aroha (justice, peace and love). It also reminds us that we are called to be visible signs of the living Christ in the world. As well as all this we will be celebrating the exciting and vibrant cultural diversity which makes up our Chanel College community. Next week we have twenty students attending Artsplash in Wellington along with the contingent from Saint Patrick s School. This promises to be a wonderful day out and I am extremely sorry that I will not be able to accompany them. Mr James will be going instead. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Mrs Chris Connor who has trained the students and organized the trip. Her commitment and enthusiasm are to be admired. Also on Tuesday we have eight students attending EPro8 at Wairarapa College. This combines Science and Technology and requires the students to develop practical solutions to problems using ropes, tackles, etc. It promises to be a fun filled morning. We wish them luck. A number of our students have also submitted entries to the Wairarapa Primary Schools Photography Competition. I certainly learnt a lot about photography from that experience and I was very impressed with the level of enthusiasm and the standard of photographs produced. I also wish those students all the best. Tofa Soifua. Andrea Parsons HEAD OF DEPARTMENT - YEARS SEVEN AND EIGHT CHANEL COLLEGE 2018 ENROLMENTS CHANEL COLLEGE 2018 ENROLMENTS The deadline for Chanel College 2018 enrolments is: Friday 22 September 2017 Please get your enrolment forms to the office as soon as possible to ensure your application meets the deadline.
