1 News St Joseph s TERM 3 WEEK 8 14 SEPTEMBER 2016 F rom the Leadership Te a m Dear Parents and Carers, How things change rapidly! Last week we were treated to a dose of real spring weather: warm days, blue skies, gentle breezes. Over the last few days it seems we are thrown back into winter, rainy days, cold weather, miserable skies, etc. In the light of such changeable weather conditions, this is a time when many people struggle with colds, coughs, and flu-like illnesses, and often these health challenges can spread through a class, the staff, and anyone in contact with the school. Quite apart from the challenge of doing our best to keep children safe and well while at school, it is important also to understand that at times like these, other factors can come into play that mean patience is tested to the limit, what might otherwise be a simple misunderstanding can develop into an angry response and hitting out physically at someone else, and before we know it, things begin to unravel. None of this is news to any of us, but it seems timely to stop and think about where we are in time. The end of the third term is coming rapidly, we have worked long and hard during the term, parents have been heavily involved in the life of the school, and it is natural to be looking forward with pleasure to a slowing down pace during the holidays, or at least to choosing our own routines, if we want them! In the meantime, we have a little over two weeks left of this term and we need to look after each other. It is often easier to react quickly without thinking things through, and then it takes longer to get things back on an even keel. So, during what remains of the term, can we all make a conscious effort to support and care for one another in practical and thoughtful ways as we normally do when things are not quite so busy, or we are feeling better in ourselves, or we take a little more time over the courtesies we can show one another. If we can all pull together, we will all make it to the end of the term and a well-earned rest during the coming holiday break. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support. Confirmation and first Communion At the end of this week, our school community will be enriched with the celebrations of the sacraments of Confirmation and first Communion. As you will be aware, many of our families have been coming along throughout the last three terms to support their children in preparation for these wonderful events. We have 23 children from St. Joseph s who will celebrate these sacraments, as well as children from the other schools in the parish, including St. Michael s, Allenby Gardens and Flinders Park. Please keep all of our families in mind over the coming days. End of Term Cultural Day/Cultural Dinner A reminder that next week we will celebrate the great richness and diversity of cultures that make up our community. Cultural day, when children are invited to dress in colours or costumes representing their cultural background, will be held on Thursday, 22 nd, and on Friday 23 rd there will be a Cultural dinner for families. Please refer to earlier notices about these events, and we look forward to welcoming you and sharing these times with you. A reminder that children will be dismissed for holidays on Friday, 30 th September, at p.m. The new term begins on Monday, 17 th October. Out of School Care is offered to families who require care for their children if there is enough interested families. Please find the tear off slip included in this newsletter. We wish you well for the week ahead. Maria, Rita and Kathy Leadership Team

4 Highlights of the Week from Preschool Term 3 Week This fun science activity enabled the children to manipulate objects and experiment with cause and effect. There was a lot of trial and error as they designed their bubble blowers and worked out the best way to form their bubbles. Bubbles are pockets of soap and water that are filled with air. When soap and water are mixed together and air is blown into the mixture, the soap forms a thin skin or wall and traps the air, creating a bubble. This week we experimented with detergent, glycerine and water to make bubble mixture and the children designed a selection of bubble blowers. We observed rainbow colours in our bubbles caused by light that is reflected off of the walls of the bubble. Soap, you need bubble mixture then blow it and it floats out. Air makes the bubbles when you blow it, they are always round. I can see rainbow colours, the colours reflecting in the sun make bubbles. I can see a rainbow inside, the light from the sun makes the rainbow. Air just blows like the wind, our mouths blow air gently, when you blow a bubble wand it moves. This week we baked purple beets, eggplant and sweet potato and garnished them with fresh rosemary. We also boiled some beets to create a natural food colouring. Our spring planting of vegetables such as beans, capsicum, pumpkin and carrots has commenced and soon it will be time to harvest our beetroots. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" begins with an egg that is sitting beneath a night-time sky. A caterpillar then hatches from its egg on a very sunny Sunday. The story then progresses through the remaining days of the week. Within a few brief, colourfully illustrated pages and a few, short minutes, young people can learn reading skills, the days of the week, how to count and even a little good nutrition advice. The story gives children lots of opportunity to count, with the caterpillar eating through one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, four strawberries on Thursday and five oranges on Friday. Language is modelled as children read along with the story and the life cycle of a caterpillar is explained as he spins his cocoon and turns into a beautiful butterfly. Rainbow explorations continued this week triggered by the stain glass cellophane window made last week. The children observed rainbows and reflections in bubbles, on CDs and via light shining through glass windows.

5 Under 13 Seniors Division 1 League Champions 2016 Congratulations to the team on finishing the season undefeated on top of the league table. Great come from behind wins in the first few games, however our last game against Allenby Gardens which we needed to win to finish top, saw us take the lead and go into the half time break with a 2.0 lead. Determined and fantastic goal saving defence enabled us to finish the game 2.1 victors. This was the last game for a majority of the team representing St Josephs, the core of the team having played together now for quite a few seasons. Great way to end their primary school soccer participation. The team should be proud of the way they represented their school and have been a pleasure to coach. Thank you also to the parents for their support and help on game day throughout the season. Tony Varricchio Coach U7 Soccer St Joseph s Yellow 2 vs St Francis Lockleys Red 1 A fantastic competitive fun game played by both teams. Lockleys managed to get the first goal of the day but not long after St Joseph s kicked up a notch to draw. The second half was a tough game of defence and attack for both sides. St Joseph s successfully scored their 2nd goal to end the game. Well done to all for playing a tough game. This Saturday is our Soccer Carnival to end the season. We play at West Lakes on fields A1,2&3 (refer to link: The first game commences at 12:40pm U9 Netball - SHOWDOWN - Blue 9 vs Gold 7 Another fantastic showdown game! These girls surprise us from time to time and I think watching Australian Diamonds play sparked them off to an all new level. The pace, the turn overs and the goal shootings were just like the pros. The gold team caught up rapidly almost at a level score. It could have been anyone's game in the last quarter...an enjoyable game to watch. Great shooting to all our goalies and wish to make a special announcement to Gracie who played her best ever. Well done to all and keep it up...see you all at Friday s training. Next Wednesday s games are: St Joseph s Blue play against Woodville Rockets 4:30pm St Joseph s Gold play against Kidman Pk 5pm Soccer U6-U11 Soccer have a carnival this weekend (17/9/16) which will be the final game for the season. Each team is allocated two games. Games are played at Jubilee Reserve, West Lakes. Due to several changes to the program, please check the website for finalised programs. Congratulations to our U13 Soccer Team who were the League winners in their age group! Soccer and Lacrosse Tops As the season is finishing, please return your playing top to the front office after your final game. Your top must be returned freshly washed, in good condition and in a bag clearly marked with your child s name and team. SOCCER PLAYERS will receive their deposit refund when the top has been returned and processed. This does not apply to Lacrosse tops as there was no deposit fee charged. Trophy Forms Students who participated in Soccer, Lacrosse, Netball and Basketball throughout this year have a participation trophy included as part of their fees. Notes have been sent home yesterday to confirm your child s details. This form must be returned to the front office ASAP so we can place the trophy order. If your child has played more than one sport, they will need to return a separate form for each sport. Sports Day Date Sports Day will be held on Friday October 28 th Please mark your diary! PLAYERS WANTED: U10 Basketball and U13 Netball Due to some recent withdrawals, we are desperate for 2+ additional players to join our U10 Basketball Team (games played Tuesday nights at St Clair) and U13 Netball (games played Thursday night at St Clair). Please see Mrs Keller or send an to rkel@sjsh.catholic.edu.au if you are interested! Cricket Milo In2Cricket and Kanga Cricket will return in Term 4.
