newport sport & Leisure trustee recruitment pack be part of something great
trustee recruitment pack introduction newport is a city on the rise. Regeneration and new investments mean that more than 250 million will have been spent on Newport in the last decade. Its landscape has changed dramatically and is very different to what it was in 2002 when it was awarded city status. Completed projects and investments have delivered huge transformation for the city. These include a world class university campus, state-of-the-art business premises, a new railway station, revamped indoor market, new bus station, iconic architecture and a new waterfront district providing riverside homes and leisure opportunities. Perhaps the most visible and game-changing development is Friars Walk. The development is over 390,000 sq. ft. and includes a full offer department store, a multiplex cinema, a wide range of shops and restaurants, all supported by a new modern car park and bus station. This is the most significant change to the skyline of the city centre in more than 50 years and is due to open at the end of next year. In September the Nato Wales Summit 2014 was held at Newport's Celtic Manor Resort. This put the city on the international stage and offered substantial economic benefits as 60 world leaders, 7,500 delegates and 5,000 journalists visited. One of the benefits was showing that Newport had the ability, infrastructure and energy to host a truly global event. Hosting the 2014 Nato summit enhanced the city s already growing reputation for event excellence which was further enhanced by the delivery of this event. The impact this will have in the future on investors from a wide variety of sectors including retail, housing and regeneration is significant. It was also the first time a sitting president of the United States of America visited Wales and he came to Newport. A first in every sense. Following the Nato summit, in November the Celtic Manor will host an investment conference. This conference will focus on Wales as an inward investment location and showcase what it can offer. Newport is proud of its sporting and cultural credentials. Rodney Parade situated in the heart of the city is home to the regional rugby side Newport Gwent Dragons and football side Newport County AFC who returned to the football league last season after an absence of 25 years. The city is also home to Wales only velodrome which is used by elite athletes as well as the community. In 2010 Newport hosted the 38th Ryder Cup an event that was full of drama, history and excitement. Hosting the tournament left a sporting legacy for the city with the council praised as being one of the most proactive local authorities at delivering golf within Wales getting more people interested in the sport and opening it to others who may not have encountered golf before. In 2015 Newport High School and Active Living Centre will be used by Ireland and Georgia as a team base for the Rugby World Cup the third largest global sporting event. The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre celebrates its 10th birthday in October. The building cost 16m to construct and is a stunning example of 21st century architecture. More than 90,000 attendances were counted in 2013/14 nearly double the annual number predicted in March ,000 attendees at workshops and classes initiated and managed by The Riverfront have also come through the door. Newport also has a museum, art gallery and library located in the city centre and 10 community libraries.
introduction to newport s sport and Leisure services newport city council operates first class leisure facilities in the city that can be used by the community as well as elite athletes. Newport International Sports Village (NISV) is a multi-purpose venue with a fantastic range of facilities including an athletics track and football pitch, four indoor and three outdoor tennis courts, indoor 250m Olympic cycling track, outdoor cycle speedway circuit, full size 3G football pitch, gyms with 106 fitness stations including a dedicated strength and conditioning room, three indoor cricket nets, soft play facilities for children, café, sports hall, meeting rooms, outdoor playground, floodlit multi use games area, swimming pool and extensive car parking. The Wales National Velodrome is Wales official national Velodrome and is home to Welsh Cycling. The venue hosts national and international competitions, Olympic and Paralympic training camps and has been used by some of the world s top cyclists and their teams including British Cycling, Team GB, USA, Australia and individuals such as Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton, Geraint Thomas, Nicole Cooke and Dame Sarah Storey. The facilities are principally used by local clubs and the community which includes the cycling track and the huge indoor sports hall space in the inner area for badminton, judo, football, netball, trampolining, table tennis, boccia and many other sports, exhibitions and events. This together with a dance studio, dedicated indoor group cycling studio and meeting rooms makes the facility a world class destination for community sport and physical activity. Also at NISV is the South East Wales Regional Pool and Tennis Centre. The pool is a 25m, eight lane competition pool with moveable floors and seating for more than 500 spectators. There is also a teaching pool for swimming lessons, aqua classes and parties. The Newport Tennis Centre is based in the same building as is an Easyline fitness room, café facilities and meeting room space. The Tennis Centre has four indoor and three outdoor tennis courts. NISV is also home to the Welsh Football Trust. In 2011, Newport and NISV was selected by the Football Association of Wales and the Welsh Football Trust as the new permanent base for Welsh football with training facilities for national players and a new headquarters for the Trust. Opened in the summer of 2012, the FIFA two-star 3G pitch - with the latest synthetic turf - is available for community use and is used for coaching courses and national squad training. There are also two premium grass training pitches. One of the pitches is the same dimension as the one at the Millennium Stadium, floodlit, of the highest standard possible and home for the Wales national team for training. Newport Stadium is the home of Llanwern AFC, Newport Harriers Athletics Club and the Newport and EastWales Triathlon Club. Newport Stadium is able to accommodate 4,300 spectators and can stage international standard track and field athletic events and meets Football League standard. It also continues to host international standard football matches. The athletics track was resurfaced during 2007 and is of Class 1 Standard for events. The Active Living Centre was part of the 28 million Newport High School development. The centre is available for swimming lessons, fitness classes, children s parties, football and a wide range of other activities. Based in the heart of the community, the centre has excellent facilities including, a 25m, four-lane swimming pool with wave machine, an 18-station Active Newport Gym with TechnoGym cardio-vascular and resistance equipment, air-conditioned dance studio with sprung floor, large sports hall with four badminton courts and is also suitable for five-a-side football, basketball, netball and more, two indoor cricket nets, floodlit astro turf pitch for hockey and football, outdoor multi-use games area, four outdoor tennis courts and three outdoor netball courts.
Newport Centre is located in the heart of the city centre and is an excellent multi-purpose centre. The large free form leisure pool has a wave machine and large flume. The centre also has a recently refurbished Active Newport Gym which has seen a 40% increase in its size to 64 fitness stations. The new facility has been fitted with the latest Technogym fitness and audio visual equipment to greatly enhance the customer experience at the centre. There is a sports hall and other areas and rooms which double as a concert and events venue for up to 2,200 people. Hundreds of artists and bands including Elton John and the Stereophonics have played the Centre together with major televised sporting events including the Wales Open Snooker have been hosted at the Centre. Caerleon Golf Course was founded in 1974 and is located with beautiful countryside views across the river Usk. There are two courses, a nine-hole par 34 course and the Ryder Cup Legacy course, ideal for all players and perfect for juniors and beginners. The nine- hole course is a flat parkland layout with established trees and is ideal for starters, juniors and more experienced players. The Ryder Cup Legacy course is a nine- hole par three course ideal for juniors and beginners. There is also a 12 bay covered driving range. The club house provides catering services for customers and local residents to use. Sports Development in Newport has been around for many years and it includes some of the highest quality, and most forward thinking programmes to increase sport and physical activity participation in Wales. The wide ranging Sports Development programmes and projects on offer cover the whole of the city, and can be found in schools, communities, leisure facilities, and sports club environments. Partnership work is key, and is something the team excel in which is highlighted by the funding partners embedded into the programmes including the Gwent Police Crime Commissioner s Office, Youth Offending Service, social services, Sport Wales, Disability Sport Wales, Families First, Communities First, and Street Games to name a few. The team lead and challenge at all Wales, south east Wales, and citywide levels impacting on the biggest and most important agendas, championing and showcasing sport as a tool for development. Further information is available online at
trustee information in may 2014, newport city council made the decision to transfer its sport and leisure services to a not for profit distributing organisation (npdo). this model allows the council to determine the strategic priorities of the service through a management and performance agreement, however, the npdo would be fully responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the services. Additional benefits of an NPDO include employment of local people, ring-fenced reinvestment back into services locally, more community involvement, strategic control through a board of trustee representatives and increased staff engagement. The role of a trustee is to advise the NPDO management team by contributing to the strategic direction of the organisation. Newport City Council is currently looking to recruit 11 trustees to help establish this new organisation. Trusteeship is a serious responsibility with trustees required to take an active role in the governance of the NPDO. We would welcome applications from anyone with skills that would contribute to the organisation but who would also have the following specialist skills: finance, marketing/pr, tourism, HR, education, legal, business, property development, leisure, event, culture, arts and health. Having experience, interest or enthusiasm in sport and leisure and the city of Newport would also be very beneficial. The board of trustees would meet at least four times a year for meetings that would last approximately two hours. Trustees must be prepared to set aside the necessary time to read board papers, attend board meetings and keep themselves informed about the trust s activities. All trustees will receive relevant training throughout the duration of their appointment. How to apply If you are interested in applying then please fill out the application form at the back of this information pack. For an informal chat about this opportunity please contact Newport City Council s Head of Continuing Learning and Leisure, Steve Ward on , or via steve.ward@newport.gov.uk There will also be an open evening at the Wales National Velodrome located on Newport International Sports Village, Velodrome Way, Newport, NP19 4RA at 6pm on Monday 29 September where you can hear more about the new organisation, services and the role of a trustee. Please note that the position of trustee is voluntary and is not remunerated, however, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
