Issue 12/2015 December LATEST TRENDS The euro was extremely weak in early December and this had an impact on fish trade, especially for those suppliers quoting in US dollar. The overall market situation is quite bleak, due to the terrorist scare. Thus sales are slow and importers that had built up inventories in view of the holiday period, have difficulties in finding a market. Overall prices declined for all main fish species. GROUNDFISH Index for prices Groundfish 8 Flatfish 10 Tuna 11 Small Pelagics 12 Cephalopods 13 Crustaceans 15 Bivalves 18 The year has been a very positive one for the groundfish industry, with prices rising strongly and demand far exceeding supply. In December, however, conditions changed and the majority of prices for groundfish species began to fall. This is related to expectations for increased catches in 2016, which will put total groundfish production tonnes higher than in Market demand for US produced Alaska pollock fillet blocks in Europe is stagnating due to the weaker euro and prices in US dollar have remained flat. However, demand should increase when the euro strengthens. Prices for minced Alaska pollock are being driven upwards as demand for minced-based product increases and supply tightens due to increased surimi production and strong demand from Asia. The price outlook for both minced Alaska pollock and low-grade surimi is positive and this trend is likely to continue in 2016, reflecting a gap between demand and supply. The outlook for high-grade surimi, in contrast, is weak. Salmon 19 Trout 20 Freshwater fish 20 Non Traditional Species 21 Seabass-Seabream- Meagre 21 The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.

Prices for Merluccius productus for the new season have changed very little compared with last year s prices, but due to the weaker euro this species is becoming quite attractive to buyers. Prices for Merluccius capensis mince blocks remain stable while the market for Merluccius gayi from Peru is picking up after a 6-week fishing ban. There is currently extremely limited availability of Alaska pollock on the Vladivostok wholesale market, while on the Moscow wholesale market demand is stable and supply in the warehouses is reportedly sufficient to meet demand. Demand for saithe products is reported to be weak and prices have started to drop. The Polish market for cod is growing. Previously, Poland was known for importing cod from Norway to process into fresh and frozen fillets for exports. However, Poland is now consuming half of the imported cod itself. In 2014, Poland imported almost tonnes of cod. In addition, the country landed almost tonnes. Of the total, just COD - in Poland (FOB, origin: Baltic Sea) EUR/kg Fresh gutted over tonnes were exported or re-exported, leaving a domestic consumption of cod to total some tonnes. This represents a 31% increase compared with 2013, and is double the amount consumed in It is expected that this trend will continue also in During the first half of 2015, cod consumption in Poland increased by some 11.5%. Overall prices of domestically produced cod declined during the past four years from USD 1.90/kg to USD 1.40/kg at present, reflecting the influx of higher quality cod from the Atlantic TUNA - BILLFISHES The tuna market remains depressed and skipjack tuna prices have declined further, slipping below USD 1000/tonne in all markets. Yellowfin prices have been stable, however. The short-term outlook is for moderate improvement for the coming months. TUNA - Pacific Ocean USD/kg Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel 2

Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific is slowing down slightly while Thai Canneries report healthy raw material inventories. Production activities continue to be slow due to weak demand for finished goods. Most Thai canneries will be closed for 1 week at the end of the year for annual maintenance. The second IATTC veda closure of two months started on 18 November 2015 and about half of the fleet is tied up. Fishing is moderate for those vessels that opted for the first closure. Raw material inventories at local canneries in Ecuador have fallen to moderate levels as demand for finished goods has improved slightly. However, reports suggest that demand from Brazil and Europe is still weak. Vessels in the Indian Ocean continue to experience slow-to-moderate fishing, catching mostly skipjack. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain adequate. Fishing in the Atlantic Ocean continues at a moderate-to-good level while local canneries report healthy raw material inventories. A slight increase in demand has helped to raise European prices for whole tuna while prices for tuna loins have stayed firm. TUNA - Indian/Atlantic Oceans EUR/kg TUNA - Loins USD/Kg Skipjack, Seychelles, FOB Skipjack, Abidjan ex-vessel Skipjack - frozen cooked loins, single cleaned, Spain/Italy DDP Yellowfin - frozen cooked loins, double cleaned, Italy DDP Yellowfin, Seychelles, FOB Yellowfin, Abidjan, > 10 kg, ex-vessel SMALL PELAGICS There is a high demand for Pacific herring on the Moscow market, especially for larger size herring (300+). Weaker sales in the Far East have led to price decreases in this part of the world. Peru now expects the El Niño weather pattern, a phenomenon associated with extreme droughts, storms and floods, to become "moderate" in the coming months instead of "strong" as previously forecast. This is good news for the Peruvian fisheries industry, as a strong El Niño impacts the anchoveta resource and the associated fisheries. Thus production during will be higher than anticipated. 3

CEPHALOPODS Octopus demand is poor at the moment and packers are building up stocks in expectation of higher prices later this month. Japanese demand for octopus is generally very good during the New Year s festivities, and SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa packers are hoping for improved sales over this period as the European EUR/kg 8.0 market is likely to stay weak The giant squid market is somewhat inactive as Chinese demand for boiled 4.0 products is still short and the market for 3.0 raw giant squid products remains very depressed due to heavy landings from Chinese vessels. The Spanish market Squid - Whole, FAS, size M situation seems to be similar, with slow demand and low prices. The loligo squid season has not started yet, but the forecast is also for weak demand and a hesitant market. CRUSTACEANS Shrimp prices declined sharply during the past month, partly reflecting the negative impact of the Paris terrorist attacks on the European shrimp market. The relative strength of the US dollar, especially during the beginning of the month, has been favouring countries quoting in dollars such as Ecuador, India and Indonesia. Demand from the market is focused on middle and smaller size due to high prices for larger sizes. WHITELEG SHRIMP - origin: Ecuador USD/kg pc/kg 6.90 In general, raw material supply of shrimp is low, but demand is sluggish. The overall climate in Europe is not favourable for shrimp consumption during the festive period, generally a restaurant specialty, and packers are having difficulties reconciling the market price with that of raw material. Lobster prices are firm due to lower landed volumes and good demand. There is limited availability of live lobster on the market. 4

Crab prices increased towards late November. Cumulative landings are still well below 2014 levels at French auctions (-36% in volume by late November for cm size) due to a colder spring and a late start to the fishing season. Live crustaceans stocks are low as a result. BIVALVES Bouchot, Rope and Dutch mussels are now widely available on the French market. Label Rouge rope mussels from Charente and organic Bouchot mussels from Chaussey are amongst this year s innovative mussels products on display in French supermarkets and they are stimulating consumer interest. Mussels from Spain are sold in MAP trays and are well accepted by the market as a low price option. Sales of large-sized oysters over the summer period are reported to have resolved much of the excess large oyster stocks which have been available since earlier in the year. According to Ifremer, summer survival rates have improved this year. Prices are expected to be firmer as we move through December due to retail promotions in traditional markets and good demand in international markets, particularly Asia. SALMON Seasonal demand saw Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon prices start to rise again towards the end of November, and by week 49, the NASDAQ salmon index was at NOK 50.2/kg. This is some NOK 3 above the same week last year, a continuation of the improved price situation that has benefitted the Norwegian industry in A lack of large size fish has led to significantly wider spreads this year between prices for small and large fish, but this is beginning to diminish as the average size of salmon in the pens returns to 2014 levels. Higher prices have not overly affected demand growth, particularly in the EU, where Norwegian exporters sold 24% more salmon in value terms in November, totaling NOK 3.3 billion, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC). In volume terms, exports to the EU were up 16% in November, to tonnes. Total year-to-date exports of Norwegian salmon came to tonnes by the end of November, for a total value of NOK 42.7 billion, increases of 4% and 8% respectively. Export figures in Asia and the US have also been impressive this year, with increased volumes and total value up 28% and 60% respectively. French and US preference for Norwegian fresh Atlantics in 2015 continues to negatively impact revenues for the UK salmon industry, however, with total year-to-date export volumes down 12% by October and the corresponding value 23% lower. 5

Flat smolt production in 2015, combined with biomasses that are currently marginally below last year, have pushed forward prices upwards. Fishpool.eu reports NOK 46/kg for 2016 as a whole, although forward prices for the first three months of the year are now above NOK 50/kg. Analysts are forecasting lower production growth in 2016, and strong demand in the EU, Asia and the US suggest that next year will be another profitable one for the Norwegian industry at least. TROUT TROUT - Ex-farm prices in Italy After a long period of challenging market conditions for Norwegian trout exporters following the Russian ban in August 2014, November exports of trout were EUR/kg up 57% in value terms compared with 2.5 the same month in 2014, and up 37% in 2.0 volume, according to the NSC. These 1.5 figures reflect the success Norwegian exporters have had in developing the Belarussian market in particular. Trout: Salmo spp Rainbow Trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss However, it remains to be seen whether the relatively higher biomass, and relatively larger trout, currently in Norwegian pens can be absorbed at similar price levels. Meanwhile, in Italy, the trout market is strong and prices have increased due to limited inventories. FRESHWATER FISH The tilapia market has been overshadowed by heavy arrivals of cheap fish from China and Viet Nam. This has created a difficult market environment, and prices are dropping. The US market is slow and Chinese tilapia producers are looking to sell everything before the Chinese New Year. Pangasius demand in Europe and the USA remains weak and the market outlook is not good. The fresh Nile perch Pangasius - in Spain, origin: Viet Nam USD/kg Fillets - interleaved, 20% glaze, skinless, boneless, belly-off Fillets - IQF, white, 20%, 1kg poly bag

market is picking up slowly, after the disappointing summer period. However, there are still plentiful stocks of frozen Nile perch fillets available in Europe which has kept prices stable. The new season for carp in Hungary has started, but surprisingly prices have so far been disappointing. SEABASS - SEABREAM - MEAGRE After the typical upward trend in the last quarter, prices for bass and bream have dropped off again as Christmas purchases begin to dry up. Overall, however, prices have been high this year, particularly for bream, and several Greek aquaculture companies have returned to profitability or at least reduced losses - after a long period of difficulty. There has been much talk of consolidation in Greece, seen as an important step to keep driving costs down, and the banks which are now majority shareholders in the largest companies are already seeking private investors. Total Greek exports of bass and bream were down some 8% in the first 9 months of 2015 on the back of lower production, and flat in value terms. SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece EUR/kg Seabass fresh whole gr/pc Farmed Finfish: Price Trend EUR/kg Turkish exporters, meanwhile, have more than compensated for reduced exports to Russia this year by increasing quantities to other key markets across the EU, the Middle East and the US Turkish supply has been tightening in Seabass the latter half of 2015, keeping prices Salmon seabream up, and lower production forecasts in both Turkey and Greece for 2016 should see the current price situation continue into next year Seabream fresh whole gr/pc
