Issue 1/2018 January 2018 LATEST TRENDS January is a rather quiet month for seafood demand in Europe. The focus has now changed to Chinese markets due to an overall reduction in European demand in the wake of the holiday season. Strong demand from China in expectation of the Chinese New Year festivities in mid-february will draw supplies way from the European market, where traders are reluctant to buy at the high price levels prevailing at present. GROUNDFISH Cod remains in low supply due to limited catches and reduced quotas for this year. Prices are increasing in all major markets. 2 Very strong sales were reported for cultured Spanish turbot during the Christmas season, but at a lower average price. In January 2018 prices have started to move up, but are still 40 percent below what they were in January Decreasing prices of Alaska pollock are reported in Vladivostok. On the contrary, there are increasing price of Alaska Pollock in Moscow due to high demand and a few offers in the market. TURBOT - in Spain, origin: Spain EUR/kg Fresh - whole, cultured 0.5-1kg/pc 1-2 kg/pc 2-3 kg/pc 3-4 kg/pc Strong demand and high prices in the fresh and frozen cod market is creating supply problems for the cured market. Cured cod is still considered a product for periods when supply is plentiful rather than a value-added product. A further increase in prices is expected in February and March 2018 for wet-salted cod fillets from frozen Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus), and there is also a shortage of product in the market for wet-salted Atlantic cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin. Meanwhile, the market is stable for wet-salted ling fillets, where there has been continuing good catches and high consumption. In general, the quality of stockfish at present is far better than in 2016, when black spots were present on the skin due to the persistent rain TUNA - BILLFISHES Price of tuna, especially of skipjack, continue the downward trend which began in November Limited demand from the Thai industry, which itself is a result of sluggish demand for the final product, has led to a steep decline in skipjack prices to USD per tonne, compared with almost USD in late October Some experts expect the price to dip below USD in the coming days, and the canned tuna industry is becoming more and more competitive. TUNA - Pacific Ocean USD/kg Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific has slowed down to a moderate pace. However, due to the large number of carrier landings in December and the end-of-year closure at Thai canneries, raw material inventories remain at a healthy level. The second 2-month IATTC veda in the Eastern Pacific is ending on 19 January 2018, and catches have been poor for those vessels (some 36 percent of the total) that have opted to continue fishing over this period. While raw material supplies continue to be supplemented 2

by carriers arriving from the Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific, inventories at local canneries have fallen to a low level. Despite the lack of raw material, however, prices for Ecuadorian, EU-eligible skipjack have fallen to USD per tonne ex-vessel Manta, while those for skipjack from Western and Central Pacific carriers are at USD CFR Manta, reflecting the downtrend on the Thai market. In contrast, yellowfin price have increased slightly. TUNA - Spanish canneries EUR/kg Yellowfin > 10 kg, Spain CFR Skipjack main sizes, Spain CFR Fishing in the Indian Ocean has resumed for all fleets since the start of the year. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Both skipjack and yellowfin prices have fallen. The annual 2-month FAD closure in the Atlantic Ocean came into effect on 1 January Both catches and raw material inventories at local canneries are moderate. In line with the global trend, skipjack and yellowfin prices are declining. In Europe, prices for skipjack have fallen while yellowfin prices remain stable. Meanwhile, the market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins is down due to the arrival of duty-free quota loins. The tonne duty-free quota was already exhausted by the first week of January. TUNA - Indian/Atlantic Oceans TUNA - Loins EUR/kg USD/Kg Skipjack, Seychelles, FOB Yellowfin, Seychelles, FOB Skipjack, Abidjan ex-vessel Yellowfin, Abidjan, > 10 kg, ex-vessel Skipjack - frozen cooked loins, single cleaned, Spain/Italy DDP Yellowfin - frozen cooked loins, double cleaned, Italy DDP SMALL PELAGICS Demand for herring in Poland is good at the moment, while catches are declining, pushing prices higher. Sprat prices are reported to be stable. Pacific herring is in ample supply and is selling at record low price levels in Vladivostok. On the Moscow market, however, price of Pacific herring is stable. 3

CEPHALOPODS Catches in the South African Loligo squid fishery have been good, and it is estimated that more than tonnes have been landed since the season reopened on 23 November. Prices for the larger sizes are holding up well, but they are weak for the smallest size "S". While the current catch rate is pointing EUR/kg to softening prices, however, the strength of the local currency, the rand, is discouraging price cuts. The rand has firmed from ZAR to ZAR to the Euro in 6 weeks. SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa Squid - Whole, FAS, size M 7.55 Low demand from Europe is reported for cuttlefish, with slightly downward trending prices. Most of the cuttlefish supply is being directed to East Asia. CRUSTACEANS During the Christmas season, consumer demand for shrimp remained low, confirming a weaker shrimp market in In January, demand has remained weak but prices have been stable. Price increases in the coming months are likely, as imports in EU28 will be seasonally low until April/May 2018 and high demand for shrimp in East Asia is anticipated for the Lunar New Year celebration in February. ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina EUR/kg > pc/kg > > > The Argentine fleet posted record catches of shrimp in 2017, with the total in the first three quarters of 2017 already exceeding the previous tonne record achieved during Exports from Argentina, which is one of the leading suppliers of sea-caught shrimp, were, at tonnes, 16 percent higher in the first nine months of 2017 compared with the same period of This was due primarily to increased exports to the USA, Japan, Viet Nam, Thailand and the Russian Federation. Exports to the EU and China fell over the same period 4

(-15 percent each). As inventories in Europe of Argentina shrimp are relatively high, prices are likely to come down soon, with the exception of large sized shrimp, that had been sold at a very low price in recent months. OTHER CRUSTACEANS Demand for crab and lobster remained firm for year-end sales. This is the end of the fishing season for European lobster and stocks are low, pushing prices up. There are some difference with regard to inventories of American lobster in Canada and the USA. While there are some whole raw and cooked lobster and cooked lobster meat on stocks, the lobster tails inventories are scarce, so prices will be high for tails in coming months. The Canadian new season will re-open on 1 May. Canadian exporters will be taking advantage of duty-free status in the EU under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) in the new season to the disadvantage of US exporters. Meanwhile, demand in Italy has been weak in January, for tropical lobster, and prices have fallen sharply as a result. Demand for crab was high during the holiday season, leading to a record price of EUR 4.85 per kg. EUROPEAN LOBSTER - in Europe, origin: EUR/kg / gr/pc CRAB - in France, origin: Europe EUR/kg kg/pc BIVALVES French Bouchot rope and Dutch bottom mussels are plentiful on the French market. Organic rope mussels are also widely available and well accepted by French consumers, who are willing to pay a higher price for what is considered a more healthy product. Spanish mussels have also managed to carve out a market slot as a lower priced alternative. 5

December is the strongest season for MUSSEL BOUCHOT - in France shellfish sales in general, and for oyster sales EUR/kg in particular. December sales can represent 6.0 over 50 percent of annual sales of oysters of 5.5 French origin, the main oyster exporting country. According to the oyster mortality 4.0 monitoring bulletin from the French scientific institution IFREMER dated 18/12/2017, the average cumulative mortality rate is 70 percent on national level for seed oysters Monthly average consumer prices in metropolitan with high regional variation. Juvenile and adult oysters are reported as having much lower mortality rates (8 percent and 7.2 percent respectively). Overall, according to the IFREMER monitoring programme, seed mortalities are a little above 2016 levels whereas juvenile and adult mortality rates are well below last year s figures. Summer oyster growth is reported to have been disappointing which has led to a shortage of large oysters. SALMON Prices for Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon began the year close to record highs but NOK/kg declined steeply in the last two quarters as a buildup of biomass led to a spike in harvest volumes. However, it appears this trend is reversing in early 2018 as supply tightens once again. As of week 1, 2018, the Fish Pool Index, which reflects average Norwegian export prices for fresh whole Atlantics, was at NOK per kg, significantly higher than the 2017 low of NOK per kg but some way below the NOK per kg observed in week 1, Salmon - origin: Norway Despite the decline in the second two quarters, the average price for 2017 as a whole was still higher than the previous year, and the full-year report recently released by the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) showed a 5 percent increase in Norway s farmed Atlantic salmon export revenues in 2017, driven by higher prices overall and a 2.8 percent increase in total export volumes. The annual totals came to 1 million tonnes worth NOK 64.7 billion. The EU remains by far the most important market for Norwegian salmon exporters but its relative share declined slightly in 2017 after a 2 percent drop in EU-destined volume and a 1 percent increase in value. Offsetting this decline is a significant increase in exports, of 11 percent in value and 13 percent in volume, to Asian markets such as Japan, Viet Nam and 6

the Republic of Korea, and also increased exports to a salmon-hungry US market. In Scotland, a weaker British pound, strong demand in the EU, the US and China, and high prevailing prices meant record revenues for the industry in In line with their Norwegian counterparts, prices for Scottish fish fell towards the end of the year but have begun a recovery in early Current forward prices at Fish Pool reflect the broad market consensus for an average price level of NOK 55 per kg for January and just below that for 2018 as a whole. This would represent a decline of about 10 percent compared with 2017, and is the result of an expected increase of around 8 percent in global supply of farmed Atlantic salmon. Demand is firm and stable in the EU, where economic conditions are improving. TROUT Continuing tight supply of farmed trout from Norway saw 2017 exports drop 42 percent TROUT - Ex-farm prices in Italy EUR/kg in volume terms to tonnes and percent in value to NOK 2.9 billion, figures 4.0 that reflect the effect that the lack of fish has had on price levels. Although good biological performance over the course of the year saw biomass growth accelerate and eased some pressure on prices in the second half of the year, farmed trout remains scarce and demand from the US, Trout: Salmo spp Rainbow Trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss Eastern European and Asian markets should prevent prices from dropping much further in FRESHWATER FISH As typically seen after the Christmas holidays there has been a drop in sales in Hungary, Germany and the Czech Republic, which are the traditional markets for these species. Supplies are tighter but are still sufficient to meet demand, with most producers making use of this period of year to maintain their units for live fish and try to empty ponds. Sales campaigns for carp are continuing, albeit at sharply discounted prices. CARP - in Europe, origin: Hungary HUF/kg Carp - whole - live Carp - Fillets, fresh on ice Carp - Slices, fresh on ice

Due to negative press, European demand for pangasius continues to decline. As a result, imports into the EU were some 15 percent down in 2017 and Viet Nam, the main supplier of this species to the European market, is diversifying its exports, increasing sales to Africa and Latin America. Tilapia imports into the EU, in contrast, grew somewhat in 2017, but this species still is rather marginal in the EU market, equivalent to only one third of total pangasius imports in volume terms. SEABASS - SEABREAM - MEAGRE Both of the two major Mediterranean suppliers, Turkey and Greece, have been supplying the European market with significantly greater quantities of bass and bream this year, and this has pushed prices downwards. Compared with December, January prices for Greek seabream on the Italian market rose slightly for small sizes ( g) and extra-large sizes (1kg+) grade but dropped for the g category, SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece EUR/kg Seabass fresh whole gr/pc Seabream fresh whole gr/pc while seabass prices remained stable for small ( g) and large (800g+) fish but fell for all other sizes. For the mid-size category ( g), prices are now at their lowest point in 4 years in Italy, while reports from Spanish wholesale markets reflect similar trends. Without a significant negative supply shock, total production of bass and bream in the Mediterranean region can be expected to remain at or above 2017 levels over the next couple of years and although progress in market diversification, technological innovation, product development and marketing means that the sector is not as vulnerable to price crashes as it once was, the short and medium-term outlook remains uncertain. In other industry news, there are now eight bidders competing for majority stakes in two of the largest Greek bass and bream companies, Nireus and Selonda. The majority of the remaining potential buyers are US and European based investment funds seeking to advance consolidation of the Greek industry by acquiring both firms. The sales process is now expected to be completed sometime in the second quarter of
