Issue 09/2010 The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions. INDEX FOR PRICES Groundfish 6 Flatfish 6 Tuna 7 Small Pelagics 7 Cephalopods 7 Crustaceans 8 Bivalves 9 Salmon 9 Trout 9 Freshwater fish 10 Non Traditional Species 10 Seabass 11 Seabream 12 LATEST TRENDS September is usually a relatively slow month for seafood sales in Europe. Although vacations are over, schools have reopened and people are back in the cities, retail demand is held back by cautious consumers, especially for eating out. For the processing industry the picture is different, as sourcing of raw material is now underway in anticipation of sales over the next six months. Salmon sales are surprisingly strong despite high prices with many processors now purchasing for the peak season around Christmas time. However, increasing consumer resistance to the current prices is reported. The interaction of species in the European whitefish fillet market is becoming increasingly complex with pangasius and tilapia continuing to gain market share to the detriment of traditional groundfish species. Species such as saithe, for which supply is limited, are registering good prices however. Demand in the European market over the next few months will be linked to consumer sentiment as well as the needs of processors. Consumption leading up to Christmas will be on the rise although price and value for money continue to be key parameters. Some increase in demand for value-added products, notably in the French market, indicates an improvement in consumer sentiment. Also of interest is the upswing in company takeover activity, testifying to growing optimism in the sector s future, in particular of European aquaculture companies in salmon and bass/bream production.

GROUNDFISH Offers for Merluccius gayi are weak but demand is strong. However, prices of both deepskinned and interleaved fillets have remained stable. Hake catches from Chile are poor but prices are currently stable. There is strong demand for minced whitefish from European manufacturers with minced hake prices increasing to USD 1 950/tonne. Alaska pollack is in demand by European manufacturers although prices for frozen fillets from Russia/USA have dropped somewhat as pangasius and salmon continued to grow in market share. The situation of cod fillet block prices (skinless/boneless) from the Barents Sea is stable. After a few months of stability, surimi prices are weaker. Hake (Merluccius gayi) - in Europe, origin: Chile USD/kg Alaska pollack In Europe, origin: Russian Federation/USA USD/k g Frozen - fillets, skinless, boneless Fillet block, PBO, deepskinned Fillet interleaved, PBI 3.80 Cod - In Germany, origin: Poland/Norw ay Surimi - In France, origin: Spain EUR/k Fillet block, skinless, boneless Stick 250 gr/pc FLATFISH Turbot - In Spain, origin: Spain Fresh - whole, cultured 0.5-1kg/pc 1-2 kg/ pc 2-4 kg/pc 3-4 kg/pc Strong summer sales of turbot have boosted quotations. At the same time, biomass reduction at some farms is limiting supply with some strengthening of prices expected over the coming months. 2

Tuna Loins - In Europe, origin: Latin America USD/kg Nov-08 Mar-09 Jul-09 Nov-09 Mar-10 TUNA Jul-10 Yellowfin 6.85 Despite lower raw material inventories, Thai packers pushed down the price of tuna for main size skipjack to be delivered during September. Citing low interest from canned tuna buyers, the leading packers in Thailand reduced both the price and the volume of their raw material purchases for September. Many observers find this to be incongruous given the modest catches in the Western and Central Pacific as prices would normally go up during periods of reduced catch. Buyers seem to be speculating that holding their orders back from the market will allow them to purchase their requirements at reduced prices. End of year purchase programs, however, especially those tied to duty preferences and quotas commencing on 1 January, may fill production plans and frustrate bargain-hunters. Indian Ocean catches continued mixed with lower landings of yellowfin. Low offers from the cannery in the Seychelles prompted sellers to send one carrier from the Indian Ocean to Bangkok. West Africa s prices for skipjack fell. About half of the tuna fleet operating in the Eastern Tropical Pacific is currently idle as a result of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission s 2 month fishing ban that began on 29 July. Despite reduced landings from the Latin American purse seiner fleet, the price in Ecuador followed the price trend established by Bangkok. Prices of skipjack fell whereas the price of EU qualifying yellowfin 10 kg/up delivered to Central American processors was stable. Several reefer carriers from the Western and Central Pacific were sold to Ecuador and Mexico for arrival in September. CEPHALOPODS For squid, South African catches continue at moderate levels. With the local currency remaining firm relative to the Euro, vessel operating margins are under pressure, but shipments are being confirmed CIF to Spain and Italy. Squid - In Italy, origin: South Africa Squid - Whole, FAS, size M 4.50 European buyers appear to hold some stock given the expectations of a slow season. Some softening of prices is expected over the next month CRUSTACEANS The European lobster market is quiet at present. The fall season has already begun for Canadian lobster producers with disappointing volumes so far. Catches are only a fraction of what they were in spring this year. Prices, however, are stable and remain similar to those during spring. Somewhat weaker prices towards the end of the month are expected. 3

Indonesian supply of vannamei has declined sharply, reportedly by 40%. Prices have risen, making processors reluctant to buy at these levels. As a result, growing quantities are sold fresh in the local market. Interest from European buyers is not enthusiastic at the moment but is Crab (Cancer pagurus), origin: France expected to return towards the end kg/pc of the year. After a drop in August, vannamei prices from Ecuador have 3.50 bounced back this month, but only 3.00 for the larger sizes Nov-08 Mar-09 Jul-09 Nov-09 Mar-10 Jul BIVALVES In the European market for crab prices are holding but a small drop is expected towards the end of the month. Clam, w holesale Milan origin: Italy Nov-07 Mar-08 Jul-08 Nov-08 Mar-09 Jul-09 Nov-09 In shell Mar-10 Jul September is traditionally a weak month for mussels with consumer demand on the decline after the summer holiday spending, as European consumers face back to school costs. The French season for Bouchot mussels is late because of cold water temperatures with mussel size and meat yield being affected. For bottom mussels, prices dropped during September. It is expected that prices for these will level off at around EUR 1.00/kg. Prices for imported gigas oysters are on the increase, on the average as much as EUR 1.00/kg in comparison with the previous season. SALMON Salmon prices are easing somewhat in the European market with ample supply from Norway. Norwegian exports statistics for January-August show an increase in volumes of 14% compared with last year to tonnes (round weight equivalents) and a massive 30% in value to NOK 19.0 billion. Fillet exports in particular were strong with total fresh and frozen salmon fillet volumes up 32% and 34% overall. The US market remains undersupplied despite significant volumes now coming from Norway and Scotland. EU fillet imports from Norway were also up in Salmon - In Europe, origin: Norw ay Sep-04 Jan-05 Sales are good at present with rising export volumes from Norway expected over the next few months. Prices however are expected to fall slightly. Chile is offering only moderate quantities to European processors and is not expected to return with any 4 May-05 Sep-05 Jan-06 May-06 Fresh, gutted, head-on, 3-5 kg/pc 4.60

significant volumes until late 2011 at the earliest. As a result, industry estimates indicate volume growth of 8-10% next year and a further 7-12% in Company take-overs in the salmon industry have taken on new vigour with Polish smokehouse giant Morpol now going for vertical integration with several purchases of salmon farms. Likewise, Cermaq, a Norwegian company with the state as the largest shareholder, has now bought control of the diversified aquaculture producer Marine Farms. FRESHWATER FISH In Hungary, domestic demand for carp is adversely affected by economic emergency measures by the government leading to sharply lower sales for producers. Carp - in Europe, origin: Hungary Carp - whole - live Carp - Fillets fresh on ice Bighead carp - Fillet fresh on ice Sep-05 Jan-06 May-06 SEABASS, SEABREAM and MEAGRE Somewhat weaker prices for bass and bream are registered in the European market in September with demand softer than expected. Because of lower stocking levels in 2009, average prices for producers are better this year thanks to significantly higher prices for bream, whereas bass prices have come down. Most producers are now into profit despite higher costs on feed and transportation. Turkish producers have benefited from a strong local market, whereas Spanish companies with their heavy reliance on domestic sales have suffered from weak demand and tough competition from Greek and Turkish producers. Greek producers are mostly producing for exports and have been relatively unaffected by the lower domestic demand. However, they were hit by a once-off social contribution levy on profitable companies and, therefore, experienced worsening half-year results in 2010, also a result of higher Seabass and Seabream - In Italy, origin: Greece costs. In this respect, it is good to be reminded of the major cost Seabass fresh whole gr/pc components in the Greek seabassseabream industry: feed 46%, labour 6.0 Seabream fresh whole gr/pc %, fingerlings 15%. The outlook for the commodity in the short to medium term is fairly positive as production will be lower in 2010 and 2011 with stable or slightly higher average prices as a result The European market for meagre (also know as corvina, maigre) or Argyrosomus regius, is expanding but lack of consumer information about this species severely hinders wide distribution. Production is concentrated in Turkey, Greece and France and the fish has a number of positive product characteristics that should earn it a much wider audience. Prices are fairly stable around EUR /kg for sizes above 2 kg but expansion of production and lack of any marketing or consumer information forces many producers to sell small-size fish
