Issue 12/2018 Latest trends Demand for fishery products in Europe is strong as Christmas approaches. Prices for most fresh products, from both capture fisheries and aquaculture, are trending upwards. Shrimp and lobster are attracting very keen buying interest from the retail sector and the catering trade, driving prices higher. Strong demand from China is also influencing trade in European markets. A slowdown in activity is expected in the opening months of next year, however, as Easter (the other main consumption holiday in Europe) is late in In contrast to most other species, demand for tuna has not been good over the winter months in Europe and the United States of America and inventories are full, a combination which has seen prices of tuna raw material for canning fall drastically in December. 2 In Poland, cod catches are limited at the moment due to bad weather and prices have increased on the back of moderate demand. Meanwhile, consumption of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) is rising and market prices are increasing strongly. For wet-salted cod fillets from fresh raw material (Gadus morhua) of Faroese and Icelandic origin, fishing is finally improving after months of poor catches. In particular, the Foroya banki fishing grounds near the Faroe Islands are becoming more productive. Christmas is typically a strong sales period for these products, especially in the Southern part of the continent. Sales of turbot have increased as demand strengthens with the approach of the yearend festivities. Average prices have increased by almost EUR 1.00 per kg for all sizes. Large turbot are generally served as the family Christmas dish, while smaller turbot are sold to restaurants, which are also very active buyers during this time of year. TUNA - BILLFISHES Prices for both skipjack and yellowfin were down in early December, helped by good catches in the Western Pacific, and the closure of canneries in Bangkok for the New Year period. Bangkok is the global price setter for skipjack, and prices have been declining in Manta despite the second veda, which saw half the fishing fleet confined to port. TUNA - Pacific Ocean USD/kg Fishing in the Western and Central Pacific is reported to be good and there has been an Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel increase in carrier landings in Thailand. Most of the canneries will be closed for a week during the New Year period and raw material inventories remain healthy, pushing skipjack prices down further to reach some of the lowest levels seen this year. Catches in the Indian Ocean have fallen slightly to a moderate level. Seychelles flagged vessels are now tied up in port due to the exhaustion of the yellowfin quota. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy and some fish cargo continues to be diverted to the Bangkok and Ecuadorian markets. Skipjack prices continue to drop while yellowfin prices have increased slightly. 2

The second IATTC veda in the Eastern Pacific remains in force until 19 January. Fishing is reported to be slow for those vessels not in port. There have also been fewer carrier arrivals from the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. However, raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy for now. Prices of skipjack and yellowfin have decreased. TUNA - Spanish canneries EUR/kg Yellowfin > 10 kg, Spain CFR Catches in the Atlantic Ocean are reported to Skipjack main sizes, Spain CFR have decreased while raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Due to weak demand from canneries and the price downtrend in other markets, skipjack and yellowfin prices have fallen further. The two-month FAD closure will begin on 1 January Demand is subdued on the European market due to the holiday season, with associated prices declines evident for skipjack and yellowfin. The market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins remains stable, however. SMALL PELAGICS Herring catches in Poland have been good in the last few months of the year. Herring is not one of the preferred species for Christmas dining, however, and the improved supply has translated into lower prices. Herring catches by the Norwegian fleet also have been strong over the last few weeks, and prices have fallen in key export markets. CEPHALOPODS Supplies of octopus raw material are increasing from all regions in Indonesia. However, raw material prices remain high due to continued strong global demand for octopus products and tight supply from Morocco and Mauritania. 3

CRUSTACEANS In Indonesia, the supply of shrimp raw material is decreasing as many farmers reduce harvests towards the end of the year. Raw material prices have fallen somewhat, however, especially in the East Java region. Meanwhile, Argentine shrimp prices are stable, with very tight supply at present. ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina EUR/kg Crab prices are very good are present due to strong global demand and a later start to the season. Lobster prices are > pc/kg > > > also firming as the end of the year is one of the main sales period for lobster in European markets. CRAB - in France, origin: Europe EUROPEAN LOBSTER - in Europe, origin: EUR/kg EUR/kg kg/pc / gr/pc BIVALVES Demand for oysters will increase as we enter the festive season. Prices are expected to be firmer than last year due to higher summer mortalities in France and strong international demand. 4

SALMON European market prices for farmed Atlantic salmon have picked up in December as per the standard seasonal trend, but the upturn has been somewhat more subdued than expected due to a combination of relatively plentiful supply and uncertainty resulting from the ongoing demonstrations in the largest market, France. However, spot prices for fresh whole Atlantics from Norway as of week 49 were above those recorded in the same week last year, with FishPool reporting levels of NOK 57.6 per kg versus NOK 51.2 per kg for the same week in The latest export figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) show the positive effect the high price levels are having on Norwegian export revenues, with tonnes of salmon exported in November worth NOK 6.2 billion, reflecting flat volume growth and an increase in value of some 10 percent compared with the same month in The cumulative totals for the first 11 months of 2018 were tonnes exported worth NOK 62 billion. NSC analysts have noted a decline in Norway s Salmon - origin: Norway market share in non-eu markets this year, but this has been compensated for by strong demand from EU export destinations such as Poland, France, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy. In the UK, a detailed government report assessing the challenges and opportunities of the Scottish salmon farming industry was released at the end of November, and its contents will have potentially significant implications for the future of the sector. The core conclusion of the report was that environmental concerns and fish health issues must be urgently and meaningfully addressed if the industry is to secure its long-term future. The outcome of ongoing Brexit negotiations is also likely to have significant consequences for Scotland s salmon farming industry, particularly if the final deal introduces new barriers to UK-EU trade. In the more immediate future, export prices out of the UK are slightly up year-on-year as of week 50, with the industry reporting quotes of GBP 5.80 per kg for 4-5 kg fish compared with GBP 5.50 per kg in the same week in NOK/kg kg Forward prices at FishPool have been revised down slightly in recent weeks and significant further increases are unlikely for the remainder of 2018, but reduced biomasses at Norwegian farms are still expected to push prices up in the first half of next year. The consensus forward price for now stands at NOK per kg while the equivalent for January 2019 is NOK per kg. Similar levels are forecast for the first half of 2019 as a whole, due to a slowdown in global production of farmed Atlantic salmon, particularly in Chile. 5

TROUT Prices for fresh whole farmed Norwegian trout were marginally up year-on-year as of week 48, 2018, averaging NOK per kg. Total cumulative output of farmed Norwegian trout has been some 15 percent above last year so far in 2018, and biomasses as of October were 25 percent higher than the same month in The NSC reports a total export volume in the first 11 months of the year of tonnes worth NOK 2.7 billion, increases of 18 percent and 5 percent respectively, although export supply volume fell slightly in November to 2 percent below the same month in FRESHWATER FISH Christmas sales of carp have started in Europe with significant discounts for live carp. Carp is a popular Christmas dish in Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, and the species is actively promoted in supermarkets and municipal markets. Prices of carp fell by some percent from November to December. CARP - in Europe, origin: Hungary HUF/kg Carp - whole - live Carp - Slices, fresh on ice Carp - Fillets, fresh on ice SEABASS SEABREAM Producers of farmed bass and bream to the European market continue to suffer the effects of severely depressed price levels, the result of high export volumes coming out of Turkey. Turkish supply has shown little sign of abating in the last quarter of the year, and in fact year-onyear comparisons for the latest available month, October, reveal a sharp increase in Turkish export volume of both species compared with the same month in With demand seasonally weak in the winter time, the excess supply situation SEABASS/SEABREAM - in Italy origin: Greece EUR/kg has pushed euro prices for both bass and bream down to levels not seen since late 2012, and the medium-term outlook is worsening. Italian market prices for g fresh whole bass and bream from Greece were down to EUR 3.90 and EUR 3.80 per kg respectively as of early December, and average prices for all sizes were down about 2 percent compared with November. Significant recovery from these low price levels is unlikely in the short-term due to a combination of continuing high supply volumes and the negative demand effects of slowing economic growth in the Eurozone, more severe economic challenges affecting the Turkish domestic market and the additional uncertainties associated with Brexit. 6 Seabass fresh whole gr/pc Seabream fresh whole gr/pc
