Issue 11/2017 November 2017 LATEST TRENDS The month of October was marked by severe storms, notably Ophelia, which interrupted fishing in Northern European waters, particularly off the coasts of Ireland and the UK. Landings suffered in consequence and this has led to higher prices. Traders are currently busy buying for the Christmas season, and all indicators point to good demand after years of relatively low Christmas seafood sales. Buying interest is expected to be high for luxury items such as oysters, lobsters and shrimp, with further increases in prices likely. Cephalopods are in very low supply, a trend which has been ongoing for several years and which has pushed prices up to the point where these species also qualify as luxury seafood products. Tuna prices, meanwhile, have started to decline from the sky-high levels reached in October 2017, but are still 40 percent above last year s prices. GROUNDFISH Cod catches in the Baltic Sea are limited at the moment due to cold weather, and supply to consumers is restricted as a result of low cold storage holdings. This has translated into a substantial increase in cod prices on the Polish market. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.

In 1970, landings of North Sea cod peaked at tonnes. Since then, SURIMI - in France, origin: Spain stocks have deteriorated due to EUR/kg overfishing, bottoming out at only tonnes in This prompted the introduction of preservation 2.5 measures, including lower quotas and a ban on harvesting small-sized fish, both of which have met with some success. 2.0 The result has been a recovery in stocks, with the annual cod catch in the North Sea now up to tonnes. This Stick 250 gr/pc experience demonstrates that good fisheries management does indeed have the potential to lead to a recovery of previously depleted stocks. There is still a lack of wet-salted cod fillets from frozen Pacific cod, with exceptionally high prices generating only very weak buying interest among Italian importers at present. However, wet-salted cod is a traditional food item for the Christmas period, and thus it is likely that eventually Italian importers will start buying even at this price level. There is a similarly limited supply of fresh cod raw material from the Atlantic due to disappointing fishing results, and producers have not yet fulfilled contracts signed before the summer break. Good demand and stable prices for Alaska pollock are reported in both Moscow and Vladivostok. The whitefish market in the Russian Federation is changing, as domestic Alaska pollock consumption shifts from more basic, low-processed products to value-added products. This has seen more fillets be produced to feed the domestic market, while imports of Alaska pollock fillets have fallen, although this is also partly a result of the ban on imports from a number of western nations. TUNA - BILLFISHES As expected, prices have started to fall, especially for skipjack. Further downward price adjustments are likely in the coming months, as demand for finished products is reported to be very sluggish and likely to stay this way over the coming months. The FAD closure in the Western and Central Pacific ended on 31 October and fishing is reported to be moderate-to-good. Raw material inventories at Thai canneries are reported to have improved to a healthy level. Some canneries have complained of slow finished goods sales due to high raw material prices in the past few months. As a result, skipjack prices have dropped sharply by 20 percent. 2

Catches in the Eastern Pacific remain low, although raw material supplies are being TUNA - Pacific Ocean USD/kg supplemented by carriers arriving from the 3.0 Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. With this increase in carrier arrivals, raw material inventories at local canneries are reported to have improved to a healthy level. Skipjack prices in Manta have fallen as an additional consequence of the improvement in supplies, but have stayed Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel well over the Bangkok price level. Meanwhile, yellowfin prices have remained stable. On 9 November, the second 2-month IATTC veda started with about 64 percent of the fleet opting for this closure period. TUNA - Indian/Atlantic Oceans EUR/kg Skipjack, Seychelles, FOB Yellowfin, Seychelles, FOB Skipjack, Abidjan ex-vessel Yellowfin, Abidjan, > 10 kg, ex-vessel Fishing in the Indian Ocean continues to be moderate-to-good and carrier transhipment activity remains high, with fish being diverted to the Ecuadorian market. Raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Mirroring the reduced prices in both Ecuador and Thailand, skipjack and yellowfin prices have dropped in the Seychelles. A precautionary closure of yellowfin fishery to the Spanish fleet came into effect from 5 November, set to last until the end of the year. The situation in the Atlantic Ocean remains steady with both catches and raw material inventories at local canneries at moderate levels. Skipjack prices have decreased slightly while yellowfin prices have remained steady. With the improved raw material supply situation, European prices for both skipjack and yellowfin whole tuna declined while those for loins increased, although loin prices are typically one month behind the market price trend for whole tuna. 4 SMALL PELAGICS High prices for Pacific herring on both the Vladivostok and the Moscow market have led to consumer resistance and a decline in demand. On the other hand, Baltic herring was in good supply and prices started to go down. CEPHALOPODS Strong demand for cephalopods continues, straining against the supply restrictions resulting from very low catches worldwide. SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa EUR/kg 8.0 Only some Chinese production is bringing any 7.0 relief to the market at present. Winter months are not normally the most active consumption period for these species, but this year no decline in demand is reported. Prices are rising further, to levels which might put cephalopods out of the reach of many Squid - Whole, FAS, size M consumers. In South Africa, the squid fisheries are currently closed, with no inventories available, and no sales as a result. The fisheries there will start again on 22 November. CRUSTACEANS Strong demand from China for shrimp is characterising the shrimp market worldwide and its impact is also evident on the European market. The disease problems being experienced by several producing countries of cultured shrimp have shifted demand towards wild shrimp, and particularly towards those of Argentine origin. In Argentina, the shrimp fishing season for the areas south of the 41st parallel closed on 31 October. Some vessels have continued trawling in the open areas, but traditionally the production in these areas is limited and most of the boats have already returned to port for the remainder of Overall, the 2017 season saw bumper catches once again with production exceeding tonnes. This figure is expected to be widely exceeded with trawler catches in November and December, which have improved in recent days. However, strong demand in China with the approach of its New Year (16 February) has led to a shortage of product in Argentina and significant price increases. Chinese buying of large sized shrimp from Argentina has seen prices for these products move up and has differentiated these sizes 4

from the smaller sized specimens, a trend that contrasts with the market situation that had lasted for a whole year previously (see chart). ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina EUR/kg In Europe, there have been some 4.5 signs of a lack of product, but this 3.0 effect was mitigated by delayed Chinese buying that saw the majority of the jumbo shrimp from Argentina end up in Europe up until the end of August. Strong Christmas demand is now starting to move prices upwards > pc/kg > > > Lobster raw material supply is tightening as weather conditions are becoming more challenging for the fishers in the USA and Canada. As a result, and also due to high demand for tails in the USA, the price for raw tails has risen substantially. In contrast, the market for cooked meat has weakened and prices for meat are stable. There is still some high-quality hard shell spring season lobster available in Canada, but quantities are limited. Prices remain firm for this high-quality lobster, although the price of whole cooked or EUROPEAN LOBSTER - in Europe, origin: Ireland raw netted lobster from the EUR/kg summer/fall season has dropped Production of European lobster has practically come to a halt due to the bad weather conditions in the North Sea and prices are on the rise, a normal trend for this time of year. Crab fisheries have also stopped producing, but prices have started to / gr/pc move downward as a result of sluggish demand. 5

BIVALVES French Bouchot, French rope and Dutch bottom mussels are now widely available on the French market. Galloprovincialis from Spain in MAP trays is the low-price reference for the market, while French mussels sell at more than double the price. Traditionally, winter months are good sales period for mussels in France. MUSSEL BOUCHOT - in France EUR/kg Oysters are in very strong demand, and the Monthly average consumer prices in metropolitan interest in the product will rise further as we approach the year-end festivities. The oyster season is expected to pick up again as the weather grows colder. According to the mortality monitoring bulletin from the French scientific institution IFREMER dated 11/10/2017, the average cumulative mortality rate is 65.1 percent at the national level for seed oysters with high regional variation. Juvenile and adult oysters are reported as having much lower mortality rates (6.9 percent and 6.5 percent respectively). Overall, according to the IFREMER monitoring programme, seed mortalities up to mid-october are similar to 2016 levels whereas juvenile and adult mortality rates are below last year s levels. Summer oyster growth is reported to have been disappointing and a shortage of larger sized oysters is expected for the end of year season. SALMON The biomass that had been building up at Norway s salmon farm s is now being released into the market in large volumes, and prices have taken a significant hit as a result. As of week 44, export prices for Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon as measured by the Fish Pool Index (FPI) were down to NOK per kg, well below the NOK per kg observed in the same week last year, although still above the 2015 equivalent. For October as a whole, the average export for fresh whole Atlantics out of Norway was NOK per kg, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC). The total volume exported for the same month was 10 percent higher than October 2016 at tonnes, equating to a total value of NOK 5.7 billion. Over the first 10 months of 2017, Norway s total salmon exports came to tonnes worth NOK 53.4 billion, increases of 1 percent and 9 percent respectively, although the recent boost to supply will see a higher volume growth figure for the full year. Poland and France remain the top two markets for Norwegian salmon, although France s relative share has declined somewhat in In the UK, Scottish salmon farmers have also observed a dip in prices over recent weeks, but firm demand from the USA, France and China together with a weaker pound will translate into a strong performance for the UK industry this year. 6

Current price levels are widely expected to be at or near the bottom for the year, and as of mid-november reports point to a recovery that will be sustained by end-of-year demand. Aggregate forward prices at Fish Pool also suggest that an average price of around NOK 60 per kg for Norwegian fresh whole Atlantics is likely to be maintained into the first few months of Overall, rapid demand growth across the world will keep European salmon prices relatively high for the foreseeable prices, although an increase in supply growth should prevent a repeat of the severe price spikes seen towards the end of last year. At the farm level, although margins are still healthy, sea lice treatment costs are now reported to be pushing total costs to record levels and this continues to be a focus area for the industry as a whole. Salmon - origin: Norway NOK/kg TROUT In line with the trend in the salmon market, Norwegian trout prices also slid downwards in October after reaching exceptionally high levels this year due to the combined effect of depleted biomasses and strong demand in a variety of markets, including Japan, Belarus, USA and Thailand. TROUT - Ex-farm prices in Italy EUR/kg The NSC reports a total of tonnes of Trout: Salmo spp Rainbow Trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss trout exported by Norway in October, worth NOK 253 million, both figures representing declines of 18 percent compared with the same month last year. The continuing tight supply is expected to keep prices high for the foreseeable future, although exporters will be wary of the demand erosion that is the likely result of any long-term elevation of price levels. In Italy, the impact of the dry summer is still being felt in the trout industry. Despite the recent rains, larger sized trout and salmon trout are practically absent from the market. For smaller sizes, however, supply seems to be sufficient with stable prices. 7

FRESHWATER FISH Carp is a popular seafood item for the traditional Christmas lunch in Hungary and sales of this species have recently risen further, meeting with sufficient supply. However, there is strong competition from seawater species and pangasius, which is likely to increase in the coming months. CARP - in Europe, origin: Hungary HUF/kg Carp - whole - live Carp - Fillets, fresh on ice Carp - Slices, fresh on ice SEABASS - SEABREAM - MEAGRE Although somewhat delayed this year, it now appears that prices for farmed bass and bream on the Italian market have started to fall in line with their annual year-end downward trend. Prices for Greek fish sold in Italy were 7 percent down in November compared with the previous month. In Spain, meanwhile, wholesale prices in Madrid and Barcelona show steep declines for both species, particularly smaller sizes. Overall, this year Farmed Finfish: Price Trend EUR/kg has been one of somewhat mixed 5.5 developments for the bass and bream 4.5 sector, characterised primarily by a 3.5 substantial supply boost from the major suppliers that has depressed prices but also by positive demand growth in multiple markets. This latter expansion has been led by Turkey in recent years, although the EU Seabass seabream has made investments into developing both marketing strategies and production technologies. Recent financial results reported by the Greek farming company Nireus suggest that progress is indeed being made in terms of cost reduction, which will be important if the increased production volumes are to translate into profits at the current price level. In other news, the sales process for Nireus and Selonda has moved forward although the final buyers are still unknown. The process is expected to be completed by February
