Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions. LATEST TRENDS International fish markets are being influenced by growing economic uncertainty among consumers. Importers, processors and retailers in the large importing markets are scaling back on purchases with less willingness to commit or to enter into any long-term contracts. As a result, prices of many fish products are declining after hitting the highest levels ever in March Since then, as evidenced by the FAO Fish Price Index, aggregate prices levels have declined for many fisheries commodities. As usual though, the picture is not uniform and supply constraints for some species have seen a number of species move upwards, including tuna, shrimp, tilapia, mackerel and herring. The biggest change in sentiment, and in prices, has been for farmed Atlantic salmon. After a strong 2010 with record prices levels and producer margins close to 50%, prices crashed in May 2011 and the market has still not settled. Despite the economic uncertainty, many local markets have been strong, for example both Greek and Portuguese salmon imports increased in 2011 and bass and bream have also had a good year with firm demand. Over the next two months, strong seasonal demand should firm prices for most species. WTO trade forecast The World Trade Organization has reduced its overall trade forecast to 5.8% growth, down from their earlier estimate of 6.5%, in view of the fact that trade has grown more slowly than expected in the last few months and the outlook for the global economy remains uncertain. The WTO calls on its members to strengthen and preserve
the global trading system to enable it to continue performing its functions, and avoiding even worse outcomes. For fish trade, tariffs in the major importing countries are low, but some recent attempts at protectionism have been observed during 2011, especially as a reaction towards increased imports of farmed freshwater species from Asia. The NSEC announced that in September clipfish exports from Norway increased by EUR 10.9 million to a total of EUR 59.2 million. For the year to date exports of clipfish stand at EUR million. Exports of cod increased by EUR 18.4 million in value, which is the result of higher prices, and saithe by EUR 10.3 million, but in this case the increase is because of higher volumes. Salted cod exports dropped by EUR 8 million, to a total of EUR 4.4 million. The outlook for groundfish fisheries in 2012 is looking promising following recent surveys. According to the latest survey of marine resources in the Barents Sea, jointly managed by Norway and Russia, biomass is increasing. Researchers also found that cod was far more spread out than before, probably as a result of their food source moving further north because of higher water temperatures. At the meeting to set quotas held in early October, Russia and Norway agreed to increase their joint quota of North East Arctic cod by 7% to tonnes for 2012, up from tonnes in The haddock quota will be increased by 5% to tonnes and Greenland halibut by 20% to tonnes. GROUNDFISH The European Commission, in its latest proposal for 2012 quotas, also indicated that quotas for certain cod stocks would increase by 141% to tonnes. 2
FLATFISH In Spain, prices of small sized turbot continue to fall while prices of larger sizes remain stable or rising. This trend is likely to continue as demand is falling and farms have large stocks of small size turbot, giving rise to a widening price gap between these sizes. TUNA Catches in the Western and Central Pacific are below average and fishing on FAD s starting on 1 October failed to produce the increase anticipated by the market. Low catches are partially attributed to management measures imposed by the Parties to the Nauru Agreement whereby foreign flag purse seiner fleets that have exhausted their allocated number of fishing days in certain Exclusive Economic Zones had to either limit their fishing activities to less productive areas where they still have access or stop fishing completely. Cold storage holdings of raw material in Bangkok continued to decline because of very poor volumes delivered during September, which amounted to only tonnes. Projected delivery tonnage for October is also low at tonnes. The market price for October deliveries to Bangkok was between USD and USD per tonne for main size skipjack. Yellowfin of 10 kg and up, with EU catch certificates, is being sold for up to USD 3 000/tonne cfr origin Bangkok. Usually, at this time of the year, there is an increase in the processing activity in Thailand to take advantage of the EU 6% duty quota on cooked loins, but because of the relatively high cost of raw material, major buyers have decided to wait for the price to drop before placing their orders. Accordingly, the market is quiet waiting for increased catches, and lower prices. At the moment, buyers are only placing small orders to cover their immediate needs. In the North Atlantic fishing was poor and catches were half of what could be considered as normal. Despite low supply, the skipjack price was stable at about EUR 1 100/tonne and yellowfin of 10kg/up at about EUR 1 950/ tonne, both prices ex vessel Abidjan. Yellowfin 10kg/up sold in Spain for EUR 2 000/tonne cfr Vigo. Prices in the Indian Ocean were comparable. 3
As expected, the price of tuna raw material in Ecuador was quite firm during October as this month is the period between the two closures of the tuna fishery by IATTC. The price of skipjack in Manta increased to USD 1 950/tonne from USD 1 850/tonne. Catches have recovered compared with figures from 2010, especially skipjack, up by 76% compared with the previous year. SMALL PELAGICS In Norway, herring exports totalled NOK 174 million (EUR 22.4 million) in September, an increase of NOK 38 million (EUR 4.9 million) compared with the same period last year. While exports of mackerel were down by NOK 343 million (EUR 44.1 million) to NOK 926 million (EUR million), with China being the main market for Norwegian mackerel, with a value of NOK 443 million (EUR 57 million), followed by Japan with a value of NOK 398 million (EUR 51.2 million) Prices of Norwegian spring spawning herring remain on the high side. At the beginning of October, the average price at auction was at NOK 5.78 (EUR 0.74) per kilo, with some tonnes of herring landed at ports during the same week. The average price for this season stands at NOK 6.24 (EUR 0.80). CEPHALOPODS Octopus of Indonesian origin is in high demand from Spain and Italy, and packers from China and the Republic of Korea are also showing interest, keeping prices on an upward trend. In South Africa, although squid catches show signs of improving, landings are still low and the product is being shipped rapidly. Prices remain high with prices of illex at levels not seen before. In western India, bad weather conditions caused a significant drop in landings of cephalopod raw material. The demand from the Chinese market for whole cephalopods is strong, accepting high prices. At the moment, the European market remains unresponsive with few orders. Only small sized cuttlefish are available in the market and squid landings have yet to improve. 4
The autumn season for lobster in Canada ended on 8 October while the Maine season in the USA continues. Prices remain stable. In France, crab prices are beginning to rise, indicating some increase in purchases in anticipation of needing stocks for the end year. Shrimp Supply and prices of shrimp from Indonesia remain stable and this trend is likely to continue until the end of the year. CRUSTACEANS Shrimp supply is likely to be lower in the second half of this year, with both Thailand and Viet Nam having problems. In contrast, Indian supply, particularly of vannamei, is very good. However, prices are likely to remain high or even increase, with the exception of vannamei from India, and the EU import trade will start looking for more supplies soon in the run up to the end of year festive season. BIVALVES French bouchot, Mediterranean rope and Dutch mussel have a strong presence in the French market at the moment. Promotions take place frequently because consistent supply and reasonable price compared with other seafood products make this possible. Oyster mortalities have stabilised in all the observed locations since the beginning of August, as reported in September by the French National Observatory managed by IFREMER. Resistant seeds selected for the 2011 season have been showing promising results. 5
SALMON The continued fall in prices in the European market is making life difficult for producers not only in Norway, the main supplier, but also for Irish and Scottish farmers. Chilean companies, who have been targeting Brazil and the USA for their recovering output, have on their side been hit by the fall in the Brazilian currency and a weak US market. Norwegian export statistics for the first nine months show a 3% increase in export volumes from the same period in 2010 at tonnes (round weight). However, as a result of the sharply lower prices from the second quarter onwards, the value of exports declined, albeit only marginally, to NOK 21.7 billion. Fresh fillet exports to the EU were stable but those to the USA fell 66%. The EU remains Norway s principal destination and saw imports grow 3.4 % during 2011; traditional processing destinations such as Poland were down however. Norway s problems with China saw salmon exports fall back 48%. The major growth was experienced in relatively new markets such as Israel and Viet Nam, and within Europe in Portugal and Greece, somewhat surprisingly. Generous catches of wild Pacific salmon, especially of pinks, have added supplies to both the US and Russian markets, lessening the need for imports of farmed salmon. Coho however remains in short supply. Russia s imported volumes from Norway were still up 4% during the first nine months, whereas USA s purchases from Norway fell back almost 50%. The main reason for the latter is Chile s comeback, however. Demand and production of trout in Italy have remained virtually unchanged all this year, with prices also stable at EUR 2.90/kg for farmed live trout. Norway s trout exports during the January-September period fell slightly to tonnes, down by 5.4 %. The EU s trout imports from Norway rose 49% during the period, although the total is small at around tonnes. TROUT 6
VASEP reported that exports to the EU account for 30.7% of the total pangasius export. Spain and the Netherlands are currently the biggest importers, accounting for over 10% of all pangasius imports by the EU. In the first eight months of 2011, Viet Nam s exports to Spain were valued at USD 73 million, down 9.6% on 2010, but in August itself exports were up 46%. Exports to the Netherlands were up by nearly 88% in August. FRESHWATER FISH According to VASEP, Viet Nam s overall production of pangasius in 2011 will drop 40% to around tonnes, the equivalent of tonnes of fillet, as producers struggle with increased costs, tight credit and some disease problems. Our correspondent from Hungary stated that carp sales have been low because food prices, including for fish, have increased. Fish producers and processors have started promotional campaigns to encourage sales. SEABASS/SEABREAM After new stability in the market over the last two months, some weakening of prices is expected during November and early December. This is a seasonal phenomenon with ample supply of bass and bream during the autumn, often in competition with wild local fish for the same fresh market. From December onwards, the market should tighten as a result of strong demand and diminishing supplies. 7
