Issue 7/2017 LATEST TRENDS Summer is the main consumption period for a number of important seafood species, including bivalves, canned tuna, cephalopods, and portion-sized seabass and seabream. However, for some other species, such as Alaska pollock, cod and carp, demand is close to zero. Prices for products in good demand have been rising, even for plate-sized seabass and seabream, for which prices have been relatively low so far this year. This demand can be expected to diminish as autumn approaches, to recover only at the end of the year for the Christmas and New Year festivities. Index for prices Groundfish 8 Flatfish 9 Tuna 10 Small Pelagics 11 Cephalopods 11 Crustaceans 13 GROUNDFISH Initial price reports from the Merluccius productus spring season are indicating a decline compared with the previous season, while prices of Baltic cod are also falling on the Polish market. In general, groundfish products are not a typical option for summer fish consumption. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.

Turbot sales remained stable in June, as did prices, with good production levels despite increasing temperatures. Some slowdown in production is likely to materialize in July and August, but prices should stay stable as demand is generally not very strong for turbot during the summer months. Demand for raw material from Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) continues to increase outside the EU. Strong demand is reported in the USA, Japan and China, and prices are expected to increase even more. The downside of this situation is that it leaves very little product for the European producers of klipfish. Supply is also scarce for wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and Icelandic origin, as vessels are focusing relatively more on ling and brosme, which is usual during this time of year. SURIMI - in France, origin: Spain EUR/kg TURBOT - in Spain, origin: Spain EUR/k Fresh - whole, cultured 0.5-1kg/pc 1-2 kg/pc 2-3 kg/pc 3-4 kg/pc Stick 250 gr/pc 2.58 In contrast, demand for surimi is quite strong during summer months, as this product is a well-liked ingredient for seafood salads. Despite the heightened demand, however, prices have remained stable, reflecting a good market balance for raw material at present. TUNA - BILLFISHES Tuna catches have been low in all major fishing areas, with prices increasing steadily. Skipjack prices are about to hit the US$2 000 per tonne level, which is considered a key psychological barrier. Consumer demand is also reported to be poor in major European markets. Canneries in Spain and Italy normally close during August, which will further reduce buying interest for tuna on the world market. These three factors taken together points to a likely inversion of the upward trend during the next two months or so, with skipjack prices falling back somewhat from the current record level. 2

The 4-month FAD closure in the Western and Central Pacific started on 1 July and fishing continues to be slow. Raw material inventories at Thai canneries remain at a moderate-to-low level. Some canneries have been complaining of slow finished goods sales and are only buying hand-to-mouth so as to keep the factory running. Skipjack price negotiation for July delivery has not yet been concluded but it is expected to be settled at around the US$1 950 CFR level. TUNA - Spanish canneries EUR/kg Yellowfin > 10 kg, Spain CFR Skipjack main sizes, Spain CFR TUNA - Pacific Ocean Catches in the Eastern Pacific have been moderate while local canneries are reporting low raw material inventories. The first 2-month IATTC veda will commence on 29 July. Together with the continuing price uptrend in Bangkok, these two factors have resulted in skipjack and yellowfin prices increasing sharply. USD/kg Skipjack Bangkok CFR Skipjack Ecuador, ex-vessel Catch rates in the Indian Ocean remain moderate and raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Skipjack and yellowfin prices continue to rise. Catches in the Atlantic Ocean are reduced as bad weather persists, while local canneries are reporting low raw material inventories. Due to the poor catches, European prices for skipjack continue to increase while yellowfin prices remain stable. Meanwhile, the market price for cooked, double cleaned yellowfin loins is holding steady. 4 SMALL PELAGICS Sprat prices continue to decline on the Polish market, where production is very limited at the moment. Herring prices are increasing, however, due to good market demand. CEPHALOPODS Octopus production and export volume from Indonesia is virtually nil at the moment, a normal seasonal pattern. Last month, however, demand was strong and prices were high as only limited supply was available from other sources. The European squid market is being influenced by two events: the disappointing squid season in Argentina and the return of the Peruvian squid fisheries. Both SQUID - in Italy, origin: South Africa fisheries were poor last year, leading EUR/kg to sky-high prices, but it remains to 8.0 be seen which supply development will impact the market relatively more. In South Africa, the squid fishery opened on 1 July, and catches have reportedly not been very good so far. Traders hope to push the price even higher than that achieved in 2016, but there seems to be some Squid - Whole, FAS, size M resistance on the Italian and Spanish markets.. 4

CRUSTACEANS Catches have been typically strong at the start of the shrimp fishing season in Argentina, which opened on 19 May. The most plentiful size has been 20/30, followed by 10/20 and 30/40. Demand in Asia remains strong, especially in Japan, even though Chinese buyers have been somewhat more hesitant. Japanese demand is mainly for small sizes, and with some stocks of large shrimp from last year still available in Europe, the price of large shrimp is ARGENTINA RED SHRIMP - origin: Argentina EUR/kg > pc/kg > > > similar to that of smaller sizes (30/40-40/60), which is an unusual development. Overall, reports suggest the price level so far this year has been lower than in 2016, but with shrimp aquaculture in Latin America currently in its low season, some price increases have been observed. In Indonesia, raw material supply is quite stable at present compared with last month and prices are steady. Crab and lobster landings will increase in the coming months with the start of the new fishing season in Europe. Pressure on raw material for American lobster remains high due to high demand worldwide for lobster and limited availability. Raw material prices fell back somewhat in the 2nd half of May and early June as the weather improved and catches increased, but are expected to rise again soon as the end of the spring season in Canada approaches (30 June) BIVALVES In France, the bouchot mussel season has begun. The oyster season traditionally declines in summer and the lack of product is evident at retail, but producers on the coast are optimizing direct sales during the tourist season through innovative channels such as food trucks and automatic 24/7 temperature-controlled distributors. Meanwhile, the French scientific institution IFREMER are again tracking summer oyster mortalities and on their 31/05 bulletin they report an average mortality rate of 27.9% at the national level for seed oysters, with 5

high regional fluctuation. Juvenile and adult oysters are reported as having much lower mortality rates (1.2% and 0.9% respectively). The clam fisheries in Italy are in full swing, and the tourist industry is demanding huge quantities. Prices of live clams have increased by EUR 1.00 per kg in just a few weeks. SALMON Compared with mid-2015, current prices for Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon reflect an increase of some 70%, with the Fish Pool Index weighted price at Nkr70.73 (US$8.34) per kg as of week 26, The most recent figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) underline the effect this has had on Norwegian export revenues, showing a 14 percent increase in value in Norwegian krone terms compared with the same period last year, despite a 2 percent drop in export volume. While the volume share of Norway s top export market, the EU, continues to diminish in the face of stiff competition from buyers in Asia and the USA, Poland and France still lead the way as the top export destinations with 11.5% and 9.4% shares of export value respectively. In Scotland, over the last two years or so, the farmed Atlantic salmon sector has seen its steadily expanding output absorbed at higher and higher prices as demand in its well-diversified major markets of the US, France and China has risen in parallel with a depreciation of the British pound versus the US dollar, the euro and the Chinese yuan. In the first 5 months of 2017, 16 percent higher export volumes of tonnes brought in GBP332 million for UK exporters, 53 percent higher than the same period in With progress being made at farm level with regard to controlling sea lice costs, the UK industry is particularly well positioned to take advantage of the tight market balance. While supply of farmed salmon has been low so far in 2017, for the most part supporting prices at even higher levels than last year, there is a broad consensus amongst analysts that global supply of farmed salmon will rise significantly in the second half of 2017, with the majority of that additional volume coming from Norway, where there is a surplus of 2015 and 2016 generation fish in the pens. However, there is still some debate as to the magnitude of this increase, with some feeling that Nordea bank s revised forecast of a 12% year-onyear increase in H is too high. Forward markets appear to be relatively hopeful that a severe price drop will be avoided, with Fish Pool forward prices at Nkr60.78 (US$7.29) for Q3 and Nkr63.23 (US$7.58) per kg for Q4, but there is potential for a 20 to 25% price drop from peak to trough. For 2018, an average forward price of Nkr61.88 (US$7.42) per kg suggests that market participants expect prices to continue to be supported at high levels despite an expected 7% increase in Norwegian production next year. 6 Salmon - origin: Norway NOK/kg

TROUT Trout production in Italy is low at the moment, and domestic demand is limited, a normal feature during summer months. Recent showers have relieved the drought situation in the Northern part of the country, although there are concerns over continued drought in August and September as lower water levels in the ponds reduce the oxygen supply and lead to mortalities. In Norway, export markets for trout TROUT - Ex-farm prices in Italy EUR/kg 4.5 are likely to continue to suffer from a severe shortage of fish for at least the next year or so. 3.5 Demand in Japan, Thailand, Belarus, Poland and the USA has been boosted by Norwegian marketing efforts over the last two years, but this new demand has in turn steadily depleted available supply and pushed prices up by almost 100% over that timeframe. Biomasses at Norwegian farms were down 19 percent as of Trout: Salmo spp Rainbow Trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss May 2017 compared with the same month in 2016, and 45 percent lower for 2015 generation fish. The extremely tight supply is reflected in Norwegian export statistics for the first 5 months of 2017, showing a 57 percent drop in volumes and a 33 percent decline in total value compared with the same period in FRESHWATER FISH Carp trade in Hungary is minimal at present, as very little carp consumption takes place in the summer heat and production also ceases during this time of year. With limited turnover, sales campaigns are temporarily at a standstill. 8 SEABASS - SEABREAM - MEAGRE Prices have remained stable for all bass and bream sizes in July, except for the gr segment, where prices increased by 3-5%. This reflects the increased demand from the restaurant sector for plate-sized fish. In order to enhance innovation, Farmed Finfish: Price Trend competitiveness and sustainability in the EUR/k EU farmed bass and bream sector, the European Commission is to invest a total 6.5 of EUR14 million in two initiatives, PerformFISH and MedAID. These sister projects are both to be funded and 2.5 developed as part of the European Commission s Horizon 2020 initiative, with the objective of creating shared Seabass seabream knowledge and tools for enhancing the Salmon marketing strategies, governance structures and production processes of the EU s aquaculture industry. As the largest aquaculture subsector in the EU, the bass and bream industry will be one of the main project beneficiaries. With the banks now looking to unload their majority shares of Nireus and Selonda, two major Greek aquaculture companies, the new owners will need to actively involve themselves in these initiatives, along with the full range of stakeholders across the entire sector. Total Greek exports of bass and bream in the first 4 months of 2017 came to tonnes, 30 percent higher than last year, but total value was only 18 percent higher at EUR138 million, reflecting lower unit values for both species and particularly in the case of bream. Similar trends are evident in trade figures reported by Turkey, with tonnes (+18 percent) exported worth EUR99 million (+6 percent), although it should be noted that prices actually rose year-on-year in Turkish lira terms as the currency depreciated further against the euro. The Turkish industry has also been boosted by good demand in the Turkish domestic market, where prices (ex-farm, icepacked) for g and g sea bream have risen significantly with the arrival of the summer season, in contrast to Greek product in Italy, where the price peaks typically achieved in early summer have been relatively low this year. As we now approach mid-summer, prices can soon be expected to start their annual downward slide towards their end-of-year lull. In the longer term, there continues to be debate as to the magnitude of expected future supply hikes and how well prices can hold up as these volumes are absorbed by the markets. 8
