It identifies you as a member of the yachting community and allows you to use the guest facilities at many clubs within boating range. This perk is called reciprocity and it really is a great deal and a good way to meet a lot of nice folks. I have mine laminated every year and I carry it in my wallet. In addition to boating to other clubs, you may just be passing by and decide you want to check out another club. Most folks are very friendly and welcome members from other clubs. Probably my most memorable reciprocity experience was years ago at the Clover Island Yacht Club. I was in town for my son s baseball tournament and was staying at a hotel across the street. I had nothing to do on a Saturday morning so I wandered down to their clubhouse. Some of the old boys were in there and we had coffee and shared some fun stories about a few of our club members who had come over for the hydroplane races and had quite a good time. Just like the TV commercial says, membership has its privileges. I would like to put on a dinner for them. Cost would be approx. $15.oo. With on host bar. August 9th, Portland YC will be visiting us. There will be a dinner of Steak, potato, salad, chips and desert. Cost is $20.00 per person. Theme is Western. We will have a little show with audience participating. Time is 6pm- 10pm. August 30th, we will have something like Cheese Burgers in Paradise. This is up in coming. Maila and I are working on it. FYI: Kathy Evans and Laura Norton will be on vacation August 9th. 2 M A Y J U N E PORT CAPTAIN UPDATE Port Captain Dave Williams had surgery May 26th and now has two new bionic knees. He is recuperating at his shop due to the fact he can not get down the ramp on his own. He is expecting a fast recovery and would like to thank all for the visits and the get well cards. Special thanks to Vicki and Chris Erickson who went shopping for him while re as in the hospital. To John Keyser and Owen Scott who moved his recovering chair to the shop and to Dennis McCrady. Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears. P a g e 2 HOUSE COMMITTEE Our next work party is July 25th. Hope to see you there. 3 CRUISE REPORT 2009 LYC CRUISE GENERAL INFO. A FANTASTIC APRIL CRUISE TO AS- TORIA April weather didn t cooperate to the fullest during the Astoria cruise, however it didn t dampen the LYC spirits. Eight boats and their guests made the cruise to Astoria with several cars driving to join the festivities. Two boats departed Longview for Astoria a couple days before the weekend and were joined later by the rest of the fleet. A great time was enjoyed by all! If you didn t participate this year, perhaps next year more members will consider attending this fun cruise to the Wine and Seafood Festival. OPENING DAY CRUISE MAY 2 nd AND 3 rd Opening day cruise started with a delicious breakfast at 8:00 am and our Captain s meeting began at 10: led by Lowell Marsh. Afterwards Mark McCrady anchored in front of the clubhouse and thirteen or fourteen vessels participated in the parade with grand salutes and big smiles. Cathlamet is always a pleasant destination. Ten boats participated in the cruise including two sailboats. Several members opted to drive to Cathlamet for the day and attend the BBQ pot luck in the early evening. Dennis McCrady cruised down for the afternoon on his boat Jenny, along with a large contingent of guests. All the new workmanship on Jenny looks great! A big thanks to Loren McNair, Jerry Norton and Dennis McCrady for help assisting other members with a successful cruise. EAGLE DAYS CRUISE Get ready for the next cruise on July th to Cathlamet. This is always a don t-want-to- miss cruise with good July weather promised. We have reserved 23 spaces so there is room for everyone. For members who haven t participated in this event, there is a parade in town on Saturday afternoon that will be include a LYC float. Also planned is a pot luck at the docks as well as a Sunday breakfast. In the past few years, a downtown poker run in conjunction with the local merchants is planned with several great prizes. Evening brings a great fireworks show. A complete itinerary of events and activities will be included in next month s newsletter. Other yacht clubs attend this cruise so sign up early by calling Steve Hamm or Gary Myhr There will also be a sign up board in the club house. Hopefully everyone will sign up. See you there! Memorial DAY and San Juan Cruises This year s LYC Handbook indicated reserved dates for a Memorial Day cruise, however nothing has been planned as yet. If there is an interest, please call Steve Hamm or Gary Myhr who will arrange a activity. Any members interested with a San Juan cruise this summer? Only two - three members have shown interest in participating with this summer cruise. Those interested, please contact Steve Hamm. This is the last chance or event will be cancelled. GET READY FOR EAGLE DAYS CRUISE TO CATHLAMET!! We expect a great number of LYC members to attend this much anticipated event July We have reserved 23 spaces with the marina so sign up early with Steve Hamm or Gary Myhr. There is also a new cruising sign up board in the club house. A good time will be shared by all with breakfast at the dock for $2.50/person for those interested. (kids free) Our third annual downtown poker run will take place with the local businesses. Don t forget the Cathlamet parade and evening fireworks. Portland Yacht Club is also sponsoring a pot luck in the covered picnic area with LYC members invited. SEE YOU THERE! Volunteers needed for our Longview Yacht Club float decorations. MEMORIAL DAY CRUISE Several members were interested in a Memorial Day cruise this year and they decided to cruise to Martin slough and enjoy the holiday with other yacht clubs from the Portland area. Everyone had a good time and hopefully more members can attend next year

A Crew Safety Briefing Could Save Lives National Safe Boating Week May ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 29, Having friends and family aboard is what boating is all about. But in an emergency could they quickly locate a fire extinguisher or provide accurate location information to rescuers -- without your help? For National Safe Boating Week May 16-22, BoatU.S. Seaworthy magazine Editor Bob Adriance has developed a short Crew Safety Checklist. "Boating is supposed to be fun, so we do not want to unduly alarm our guests. However, every skipper should take a few minutes before they leave the dock to share these tips with crew." They are: 1. Life Jackets: Offer a correctly sized life jacket to those who wish to wear one, show guests where they are stored and how they are properly worn. 2. Fire Extinguishers: They should be easily visible near engine and galley areas. Take a moment to explain what types they are and how they are meant to be used. Point out any fire port locations for snuffing out engine compartment fires. 3. Flares: Show where they are located and how to safely activate without causing injury. 4. Engine and Fuel Shutoffs: Especially on sailboats, it's not always clear how to shut off the engine (usually by pulling out the "kill" knob). 5. VHF Radio: It's very important to familiarize the crew with its operation, how to make a radio distress call, and DSC one-button rescue mode (if equipped). 6. Battery Switch: Show the crew how to turn off power in case of an electrical fire. 7. Chartplotter, GPS, and Loran: At a minimum, crew should know to find a latitude/longitude position with these electronics. Pinpoint its location on the unit's screen. Have a paper chart aboard, show your crew where you're departing from and headed for the day. 8. Man Overboard Gear: Show where it is and give a brief explanation on how to use it. 5 M A Y J U N E P a g e 5 Columbia River Fishery Notice Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife May 26, 2009 Compact Action The Columbia River Compact agencies of Oregon and Washington met today via teleconference and took the following actions: Columbia River Mainstem Shad Fishery Area 2S Shad Fishery Adopted the following commercial shad fishing periods: Season: Open 3 PM to 10 PM daily during the following weeks: Monday June 1 to Friday June 5 (5 days) Monday June 8 to Friday June 12 (5 days) Monday June 15 to Friday June 19 (5 days) Area: True north/south line through Light #50 near the mouth of the Sandy River upstream to the commercial fishing boundary near Beacon Rock. Gear: Single-wall, unslackened, floater gill net, 5-3/8" minimum and 6-1/4 maximum mesh size restrictions, 10-lb breaking strength, net may not exceed 150 fathoms in length nor 40 meshes in depth. Allowable Sales: Only shad may be kept and sold. All salmonids, walleye, and sturgeon must be immediately returned to the water unharmed. Treaty Indian Fisheries Platform and Hook and Line Fisheries Modified the previously adopted platform and hook and line fisheries allowable sales and clarifying the area as follows. Modification and clarification in bold. Effective 6 AM Saturday May 16, 2009 and until further notice the sale of fish caught in platform and hook-and-line fisheries will be allowed as follows: Area: All of Zone 6 and the Yakama Nation Fishery below Bonneville Dam on the Washington shoreline from 600 feet below the fish ladder at the Bonneville Dam North shore powerhouse, downstream to Beacon Rock (bank fishing only). Chinook, coho, steelhead, sockeye, walleye, carp, shad, bass, catfish, and yellow perch may be sold or retained for sub- Allowable Sales: sistence. Sturgeon may not be sold. Sturgeon between inches in fork length in The Dalles and John Day pools, and sturgeon between inches in fork length in the Bonneville Pool may be kept for subsistence use. Fish may not be sold on USACE Property below Bonneville Dam, but may be caught and transported off USACE Property for sale. Oregon State Action Yakama Nation Tributary Fisheries Modified the previously adopted allowable sales and clarifying the area as follows. Modification and clarification in bold. Effective 6 AM Monday May 16, 2009, allow sales in Oregon of Chinook, coho, steelhead, sockeye, walleye, carp, shad, bass, catfish, and yellow perch caught in Yakama Nation fisheries in the Wind, Klickitat, Little White Salmon (Drano Lake), and Big White Salmon rivers and the Yakama Nation Fishery below Bonneville Dam on the Washington shoreline when sales of these fish caught in mainstem Zone 6 treaty fisheries are allowed. This applies only during those days and hours when these tributaries are open under Yakama Nation rules and regulations and for enrolled Yakima Nation members. FUTURE MEETINGS No Compact/Joint State hearings have been scheduled at this time. The Joint Staff will continue to monitor progress of the spring Chinook run and provide updates and schedule hearings as needed. Several people asked for the breakfast recipe from opening day so her it is: OVERNIGHT SAUSAGE SOUFLE 1 lb sausage links 6 slices of sourdough bread cubed. 1 1/2 cups grated cheese 5 eggs 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp dry mustard 2 1/2 cups milk NIGHT BEFORE: Fry sausage, drain & cut into thirds. Alternate layers of bread, sausage & cheese in buttered 9X 12 pan. Beat eggs, add salt, mustard & milk. Pour over bread mixture. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until done.
