Seeking self-discovery and the resolution of her enduring grief and personal challenges, at age 26, Strayed set out alone, on her 1,100-mile journey, having no prior backpacking experience. Wild intertwines the stories of Strayed's life before and during the journey, describing her physical challenges and spiritual realizations while on the trail.
3 From the Executive Committee T he Brickyard Golf Club Executive Committee and our Club ownership are committed to providing a unique golfing experience where members and guests can experience the natural beauty and challenge of a championship golf course. We take pride in our golf course, our course etiquette, and the courtesy, and sportsmanship demonstrated by our members. Course etiquette is an integral and unique part of the game of golf. In terms of our golf club environment, etiquette is about showing respect for all others on the course. It is also about showing respect for the course on which we play and the work that has been put into it to create our beautiful course. As golfers we have a responsibility to each other and our course and to abide by the course and club rules. Please help us maintain the beauty and integrity of our course. A great deal of time, effort, and expense goes into the preparation of the course. It s important that each golfer play his/her part by repairing your divots or pitch-marks, and raking bunkers and sand traps before leaving the area. Cleaning the sand from one s golf shoes before walking on a green helps to maintain the pristine condition of our greens. Unfortunately, we are beginning to see cart tracks creating new cart paths to several tee boxes. We must ensure that carts stay on cart-paths as much as possible and avoid taking short cuts to greens and tee boxes. In addition, carts should never be driven any closer than 30 yards to any green. Also, we are each responsible for collecting our personal trash and depositing the trash in available containers. Etiquette also extends to our actions in the Clubhouse and other facilities. Please ensure that you check-in with our Pro Shop before teeing off. It is imperative that our Staff be aware of all members and guests on the course in case of emergencies or other issues. Members are also reminded to turn in all cart keys at the end of the round. In short, golf etiquette distinguishes the game of golf and the Brickyard Golf Course. We have a strong tradition of etiquette at the Brickyard Golf course. Please help us maintain that tradition by respecting your fellow golfers, the course, our facilities, and the tradition of the game! Robert Hughes Executive Committee Chair 2
4 Membership News W ith the warmer temperatures creeping in and the long, lovely months of spring, summer, and fall ahead, there couldn t be a more perfect time to invite your friends, family, co-workers, and acquaintances to join the Brickyard. A growing membership leads to more events, amenities, and services, as well as greater financial stability for the club. Even more importantly, belonging to a club is about companionship and common interests, and inviting your friends to join you here helps to keep that great tradition in place here at the Brickyard. Because we know that you are itching to be out on the golf course with friends this time of year, we have re-opened the popular Buddy Membership Program that we successfully ran last fall. With 51 new members brought into the program in only 3 months last year, we know that this program is hard to resist because of its great value and privileges. There s even a little incentive for you, our members, to sponsor someone into this program! Please see the larger article for more details and feel free to give me a call if you have any questions. Our pool season is not far away; May is just around the corner! If your friends are not golfers, they may be interested in our Seasonal Pool & Social Membership! Please feel free to let me know of people who are interested, and I will gladly reach out to them directly. I will also be happy to schedule a meeting with you and/or a prospective member. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the club and our membership growth. Please stop by with questions or just to chat! 10 Golf News A Note from your Course Superintendent We are almost done. A few more weeks of winter to get through. I am excited for spring to start. We have a few things scheduled in March to get us ready for a great spring transition. The greens are looking good so far through the winter months. They should be ready to go once they start greening up. On Monday, March 9th, we have scheduled our spring fertilization/pre-emerge of the entire course. We will spread the fertilizer out on Monday and water it in immediately to ensure it gets down into the soil. We will water some more that night. We will make the course CART PATH ONLY on Tuesday, March 10th, to keep from burning the grass by driving on it. This is all weather permitting also. If it rains and the truck is not able to get on the course we will have to re-schedule. I would like to ask for everyone s help with a few minor things on the course. While riding in the carts on the course, please remember to stay at least 30 yards from the greens and exit the fairway to the cartpath as soon as possible. I have noticed a lot of cart traffic up and around the greens. I do not want to have to paint white lines or install ropes to keep this from happening. On that same note, please help in paying attention to areas that are being run down by cart traffic. Go another direction. Also, please remember to fix all ball marks on the greens and add sand to the divots on the tees, fairways and roughs. When using the driving range tee, please try to use the straight line technique. Divots will develop in a straight line leaving about 3 inches in between the divot lines. This ensures a faster grow back and uses less surface area. Hope to see you on the course! 12 Golf News -SWING TIP OF THE MONTH- The short game or the feel shots around the green and putting tend to be the most difficult to regain sharpness after a long winter or layoff from golf. I feel that this is the first area to attack when you start to practice. The advantages of building your game back up from the hole and working backwards is countless. The obvious high percentages of shots, some 60 percent that are taken within 100 yards during a round of golf are not the only reason. The short game or the less that full shots can help the not only the mechanics but the rhythm and tempo of your full swing. When I am teaching short game, the most prevalent errors often come in the decision-making process instead of the execution of the shot itself. The decision process is comprised of what type of shot to hit (high or low), what club to use, and how to set up to achieve this. This installment is what I feel is important in the short game as you start to get ready for the golfing season. -Jason Sutton If you're making poor contact on chip shots hitting behind the ball or catching it thin it's probably because you're trying to help the ball into the air. Your hands are too active, and you're hitting up at impact. I'm going to walk you through a chipping technique that will make it easy to pinch the ball crisply off the turf. - David Leadbetter 11
