1 Rolling Hills Country Club Volume 20/Issue 7 Newsletter July 2018

2 T From the General Manager hank you to everyone that joined us at the Annual meeting on June 27 th. We are excited about the proposed renovations, and if you were unable to attend it is important that you fill out a ballot. Ballots are available in the membership office and I will be more than happy to it to you. We will accept ballots until July 11 th, and once the results are tallied up a decision will be made if the project will be moving forward. Please don t hesitate contacting me if you have any questions. Despite the cold and wet weather we had in the spring we were able to stay a little ahead of our first quarter budget. Operations is slightly ahead of budget, cash flow is a few thousand ahead of budget and we have gained 25 new members with a loss of 14 netting a positive 11. Of the 25 new members, 18 have been golf with 10 being junior members. We are trending in the right direction as the Club has gained 21 new junior members since June Our current initiation fee for a regular membership is at $4,000 for the next five to join, and then it will go to $4,500. If you know of anyone interested in joining please contact me, and don t forget you will receive one month s dues credit. Congratulations to Brent and Caleb Surrat for winning the Parent Junior Championship. There were 12 teams that participated, and they held off the team of Jeff and Lucas Helms in a playoff to claim the trophy. Our Senior Club Champions were crowned with Alex Helms winning gross, Jim Ingram winning net and Rob Morrison winning the Super Senior. Congratulations to all three of you, and thank you to all the members and juniors that participated in these tournaments. July will slow down a little for golf tournaments, but our annual Firecracker Tournament will be held on July 4 th with a 9:00am shotgun. Our only other tournament this month is the LGA Member-Member on July 28 th and 29 th. The golf course will be closed the week of July 9 th for aerification of the greens and fairways. It is a great time of the year for Greg and his staff to take care of this in a one week period with no interruption. Please contact the pro shop for alternate arrangements during this week. Our annual July 4 th Cookout will be held from 12:00pm-3:00pm, and the snack bar will be open until 8:00pm. There will not be a la carte service this day, but we will resume normal dinner service on July 5 th. Music in the Lounge is not scheduled for July and will resume in August. Kid s Camp is July 10 th -13 th and spaces are still available. Theme is Christmas in July on July 11 th and don t forget we are collecting flip flops for the homeless shelter this month. You can drop them off in the membership office at any time. Back by popular demand is Kid s Cooking Class with Chef Grayson on July 18 th. Come join Chef Grayson and learn how to make your favorite pizza! You will see some new faces around the Club inside and outside so please make sure you welcome all of our new employees. I hope everyone has a great and safe July 4 th. Thank you for your continued support of the Club. Darren Berkman, CCM General Manager DBerkman@RollingHillsCountryClub.org

8 From the Golf Pro Jeff Avant, PGA Senior Club Championship We would like to congratulate our winners from the Senior Club Championship in June. Alex Helms started the second round 2 strokes behind, but by the end of the round had turned that in to a 2 stroke victory with rounds of to claim the 2018 Senior Club Championship. The Senior Net Championship was a closely contested race after day one with Jim Ingram and Richard Jefferies tied and Mark Jachym trailed by only one stroke. Jim Ingram was able to keep his good play going in round two and came out with a three stroke win after net rounds of We also had the Super Senior Net for those 65 years and older and Rob Morrison ran away from the field on day two with a blistering net 65 after starting the day in a tie for the lead. His rounds of net earned him the Super Senior Net Championship. Men s Member-Guest Event Sign ups will begin on July 15 th Please remember that your guest must have a verifiable handicap at the time of sign up for your entry to be accepted. We will be taking 60 teams again and all entry fees must be paid in full by August 15 th. If the entry is not paid at that time your team will be placed on the wait list. The handicap committee is going to begin the process of reexamining the hole handicaps in August. They will need assistance from the membership by turning unadjusted scorecards into the golf shop and noting your course handicap of the scorecard when you turn it in. This process will take a little while to complete and the committee hopes to have the results sometime in early We hope everyone is having a great summer and look forward to seeing you around the club. Thank You, Jeff Avant, PGA

9 Clubhouse News From the Greens Superintendent Greg McDanel, CGCS W e will close the golf course the week of July 9 th to do course maintenance. The greens will be verticut and aerated with coring tines. Sand will be used to fill the holes and help smooth the greens. It will take about two weeks for the greens to heal from aeration. We will apply fertilizer and other nutrients to promote plant health. This is the second core aeration that we will do on the greens this year. Tees, fairways, and roughs will be aerated with ¾ inch tines starting July 11 th. The cores will be broken up with mowers and the remaining debris will be blown off. Our irrigation pump station incurred damage from a storm in June which knocked out the drive for the 60 hp pumps. We were not able to irrigate for 5 days in June. The greens dried out which caused some thinning but they have recovered since the drive was repaired and we were able to irrigate. The maintenance pump is not performing and will be replaced. The staff has been busy preparing for July tournaments and pruning trees and shrubbery. We have four new employees; Robbie Kees, Sam Perry, Joel Moran, and Richie Gonzalez. You will see them around the Club. Teddy Strickland has completed 30 years of service at Rolling Hills. I am truly grateful and appreciative of all Teddy has done for Rolling Hills. He is by far one of the most valuable employees on the greens staff. Please remember to fill divots and fix ball marks! I hope everyone enjoys the golf course this summer!
