Rolling Hills Country Club Newsletter Volume 20/Issue 11 November 2018

From the General Manager Darren Berkman, CCM I t s hard to believe Christmas is less than two months away! As we move into the colder months, golf and tennis tournaments will start to wind down for the season. Colder mornings will bring frost delays, so please check the website or call the pro shop for any delays. Our Fall Member-Member tournament was held the weekend of October 6 th. The team of Dennis Moser and Scott Hunsucker came away with the victory. This duo swept the Member-Member tournaments this year by winning the spring tournament as well. Player of the Year was crowned in October, with Mark Dunn winning the point total and Kent Byrom winning the tournament. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to the members that played in these events. Tough Day will be held on November 3 rd with a 9:00am shotgun, and there are a few outside events being held on November 5 th and November 12 th. Please call the pro shop if you need alternate arrangements on these days. Hours for the Pro Shop will change starting November 4 th and be open from 7:30am-5:00pm. The Pro Shop will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. We have been experiencing battery issues with a good majority of our golf carts. Our current lease with Club Car is set to expire in May, but we will not be able to wait that long to change the fleet out. The Club is responsible for purchasing any batteries that are faulty after December 9 th, so we have made the decision to bring in Yamaha with new carts in December. Yamaha provides an excellent product, and the membership was very pleased with their carts that they provided as a demo. We are looking forward to the arrival of the new carts and establishing a relationship with Yamaha. The Snack Bar will be closed on Mondays starting November 5 th until April. Music in the Lounge is on November 2 nd with Matt Stratford. Our Wine Dinners have been very successful this year, and we will be featuring wine and food from the South American region on November 9 th. Space is limited so call today to avoid missing out. Theme is Fish Fry on November 14 th, Ladies Night is November 15 th with wine and chocolate pairing, and the month closes out with our annual Thanksgiving from 11:30am - 1:30pm. This event is filling up quickly so please call to make your reservations. There will be no other food service available on Thanksgiving other than the buffet, and reservations will be required. The Snack Bar will be open on Friday, November 23 rd from 8:30am - 6:00pm, but there will be no seafood buffet or dinner service on that day. Thank you for your continued support of the Club. I hope that everyone has a great Thanksgiving! Darren Berkman, CCM

Club Information RHCC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Freddie Gordon Bill Norwood Ron Brown Bob Diehm PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT TREASURER SECRETARY Cameron Helms and Dr. JD Kisella GREENS COMMITTEE The RHCC Book Club meets the first Thursday of the month to discuss that month s book and enjoy each other s company. Please join us on November 1 st when we will be discussing Suspect by Robert Crais. Our book for December will be The Truth about Grace by Cassie Dandridge Selleck. The Truth About Grace is the long-awaited sequel to The Pecan Man. In 1976, six-year-old Grace Lowery was raped by the white son of the local police chief. Fearing retribution, Blanche Lowery refused to report the assault and told her daughter it was only a dream. Twenty-five years later, Grace is told the truth and must now reframe everything she thought she knew about her family and her life. 8 From the Golf Pro Jeff Avant, PGA W e had a very exciting October to close out our 2018 golf season. The first was the Fall Member-Member, which features four different nine-hole formats. The flights were very closely contested with the following six teams coming out on top and advancing to the shootout: Flight 1: Flight 2: Flight 3: Flight 4: Flight 5: Gene and Nick Robbins Dennis Moser and Scott Hunsucker Mark Jachym and Ron King Dustin Welborn and Mark Dunn Gary Kahrau and Scott Kennedy All five teams went to hole 18 for a sudden death shootout, and after two times through we were down to two teams. After two more trips down 18 the team of Dennis Moser and Scott Hunsucker claimed the victory. Congratulations gentlemen on the victory! We closed the month out with the annual Player of the Year event. This event is an invitation to the top 40 point earners throughout the year based on finishes in club tournaments. It is an individual net play tournament and Mark Dunn, who had earned points in 6 events for the season, started the day with a slim 10 point lead. There were some early challengers to his lead. Kent Byrom with a net 68 was low for the day and Wesley Horne with a net 70 finished second and almost came from 30 points behind to win, but Mark Dunn held on with a net 72 to win by 15 points and claim the title. Congratulations to Mark Dunn on A good year of golf. For November we have the annual Tough Day tournament on November 3 rd. This is a captain s choice format from the black tees. We will put the hole locations in the most difficult, and sometimes goofy, spots we can find. The entry fee is $40 and lunch will be served after the round. We will also have a couple of outside events at the club his month. The first is the Nutcracker Tournament on November 5 th, and the First Baptist Indian Trail event on November 12 th (which originally got rained out by Hurricane Florence.) Please remember that the clocks turn back an hour on November 3 rd, and with the time change the golf shop will be closing at 5pm. Jeff Avant, PGA

From the Tennis Pro Francis DiMenna, USPTA H appy November to everyone! Even as the days grow shorter and colder, tennis will still continue this month on the courts. We have ladies teams competing, clinics for all players, and open play on Sundays. So come out and play some tennis this month. Rolling Hills Country Club USTA 7.5 Team Flight Champions Congratulations to the USTA 7.5 team captained by Candace MacIntyre which captured their flight in the Charlotte area. The team finished the season with 8 wins and 2 losses. The team will compete in the playoffs in the Charlotte area with the hope of qualifying for states later this month. Way to go RHCC team! Winter Queen City Teams Rolling Hills CC continues to compete in the QC tennis league. The fall league is winding down, but the winter teams will be starting up. We will have one team this winter that will play during the day either on Wednesday or Thursday. We are always looking to add players to the roster. So please tennis@rollinghillscountryclub.org if you are interested in playing. All levels of players are encouraged to come out and play! Sunday Open Play 2pm Most Sundays of the month players of all levels and ages gather at the courts at 2pm for an afternoon of round robin doubles or mixed doubles. Please Gary Kahrau at gkahrau@gmail.com if you would like to be added to the distribution list. Ball Machine: The ball machine is still available this fall season and is a great way to practice those individual strokes. The drop in rate is $20 per use. The machine is available from 8am to 9pm. Lastly, just a reminder that with temperatures dropping, the courts could be closed at times due to the frost. Please check the website for court conditions on that particular day. I look forward to seeing you all out here as much as possible. Francis DiMenna

From the Greens Superintendent Greg McDanel, CGCS W e typically have our first frost the third week of October. Frost is ice that forms on the leaf blades of grass. When frosted grass is walked on, the cells of the grass leaves are damaged which can be seen in the purplish blue color and eventual browning of the plant. The growth rate of the grass is slower so it takes longer to heal. The results of frost damage are thin bumpy greens and more weeds. Starting this month, we will use three-hole locations rotating from front to middle to back. Three cups will be set in each green and two rubberized plugs will cover the holes not in use. This system is used because Bermuda grass will not grow enough to heal from changing cups. Our green covers are in storage and will see use as we get colder weather. We will cover the greens if there are two consecutive nights with temperatures predicted to be 25 degrees or lower and day time temperatures less than 50 degrees. It takes 6 people an average of three hours to cover and three hours to uncover the greens. The greens will be uncovered when the cold weather breaks. Green covers will be stored behind each green area until early spring. It is important to repair ball marks on the greens during winter because the grass is not growing and will become bumpy if not repaired. Pigments will be used to keep the green color on the greens until the grass is dormant. Tees, fairways, and roughs will be going dormant after we have had several frosts. We will be installing pavers in front of the driving tee mat and adding topsoil and sod on the back side. This will level the area around the tee mat preventing possible injuries. The mat will be used until Bermuda grass starts to grow next year. The staff will be busy blowing, vacuuming, and mulching leaves. Dead trees will be cut and limbs chipped. We have started our winter equipment maintenance. Our mechanic, Rod Price does a great job which saves the club money because he is able to do most repairs in house. The holidays are just around the corner. I hope everyone is able to spend time with family and friends. Thanks for all of your support! Rolling Hills CC Dress Code Appropriate casual outerwear attire is required at all times and in all places on Club property. Appropriate denim (no holes or rips) and shorts (no athletic) are allowed in the Fairway Dining Room. There are no hats allowed in the. Appropriate attire must be worn in the Snack Bar/Grill area at all times. No tank tops or sleeveless shirts (for men) are permitted anywhere in the Club or the patio. Shoes are to be worn at all times when in the Club or on the patio.
