2 Dear Fellow Members, This issue features the first article by our new General Manager and COO, Don Hunter, which details his journey to Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC) in a refreshing and candid manner. I am confident his analytic approach, experience and knowledge will enhance our Club operations and present exciting opportunities for the future. As you come to know him, I know you will share my enthusiasm. In the five months since our management change, a number of significant operational changes have been embraced From Your President Bob Magrann by our management team. I particularly want to recognize the efforts of Terri VanRossem, our HR Director, and Renée Neville, our Controller, who have been the driving force behind maintaining our focus and re-energizing our exceptional staff of professionals. The results of these efforts are visible throughout the Club, including dramatic fiscal improvements. We are fortunate to have this team in place. Summer at QCCC is a time for our staff to take a welldeserved break, and it is also an opportunity to catch up on general maintenance throughout the Club. Among these efforts, Kevin Leo, our golf course superintendent, reports that his team's results are exceeding expectations. In mid-june we hosted the Southwest Chapter of Golf Professionals who, after play, offered unsolicited rave reviews of our design and playing conditions! These comments are consistent with our significant increase in reciprocal guests, who are sharing the same positive experiences. For those of you who are not here during the summer, you have much to look forward to on your return. For those of you who spend your summers with us, we will continue to have many Greenside Grille and golf specials to keep us busy. Wherever your travels take you, I wish you a safe and fun summer. Bob LOOK FOR THE PRESIDENT'S MID-YEAR REPORT IN JULY 2 Dear Members, We hope everyone is out enjoying the newly renovated golf courses. Your Golf Course Maintenance team is hard at work getting all the little projects and summer maintenance practices completed. Beginning the first week in July, we will be adding more flowers with color on all of the From the Green Kevin F. Leo par threes. By mid-july, the big area between both 18 tees will be a nicely planted area. We have restored the edges of the greens on the Quail Course to inhibit encroachment from our fairway Celebration grass. The Creek Course is now going through a similar process, which is needed to address our increased play. Our original plan for both courses was to transition from asphalt to concrete cart paths. We started with transforming our tee boxes and green areas with concrete on 27 holes, but the front of the Creek Course remains incomplete. Our Green Committee has approved the testing of an alternative product, the cart path trail mix, as a substitution for added concrete. The test will be done on the Quail Course number 10 and Creek Course number 12. We will continue to strive to improve your golfing experience here at Quail Creek Country Club. 3 Dear Members, On July 15, I will officially join Quail Creek Country Club as your Country Club Manager and Chief Operating Officer. I do want to begin by thanking your Search Committee, Board Members and staff for the thoughtful selection process. You can be proud of your fellow Members due diligence as they thoroughly checked and double-checked my abilities and track record. My second interview was 11 hours long. Through the entire process, everyone I met was both warm and welcoming. This is a career change that has both professional and personal opportunities for me and for my family. To let you know a little about us, my wife, Rose, and I met in Florida early in my club career. We have two beautiful daughters: Amanda, who is 14, and Amelia, who just turned 10. Throughout my career, Rose and I have developed many great friends and, not surprisingly, a number have made Naples their home. We look forward to renewing these friendships and developing new ones as we, ourselves, make Naples our home. When I say we are all very excited to return to paradise, it is an understatement. As for my professional background, I have worked in the club industry for 28 years. My career started first at PGA National in West Palm and then at Vestavia Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama. However, I spent the bulk of my career at Indiana s Sycamore Hills Golf Club. It is there I really learned what it is like in a club with a committed membership all working towards From the General Manager/COO Don Hunter focused goals. I learned firsthand what it is possible to achieve. As I look back over the 14 years that I worked for Sycamore Hills, I reflect on some of my proudest working moments, such as the call from Golf Digest that we had returned to the coveted top 100 list in 2009 or our selection as the host of the PGA Junior National Championship. It is through those great experiences that I was lucky enough to learn the planning processes that help teams of volunteer leaders and staff to dream big, work hard and complete a plan. I have been able to use those same skills during the last four years in North Carolina as I helped turn around Chapel Hill Country Club. When I arrived, the club was financially unstable with high debt and poor cash flow. Today, I can report that Chapel Hill has excellent cash flow, a strong financial footing and a great sustainable long-term vision. I recognize that I didn t do this alone. I have been lucky enough to work with highly qualified staff members, who shared my vision of member participation and membership satisfaction in every club area, from Food and Beverage to Golf to Tennis to Fitness and everything in between. As I join your Club, I will work hard to accomplish all of this and more. You are giving me a great deal with which to work. While I am very impressed with the beautiful golf courses and facilities that you have built, I am most impressed with you, our Members. Everyone I met has a love for the Club and true commitment to its success. I know this Club, like all clubs in the industry, has been facing challenges over the years. You will find that I like to face these issues head on, and hopefully, arm and arm with staff and you, the Members. I look forward to meeting each of you and learning everything I can about your Club. I come here understanding that a superb facility with excited and engaged staff and Membership provides an exciting opportunity for me and for you. Watch for announcements and posters advertising where and when. Trips will be available to Hideout, Grey Oaks and Talis Park. Summer Nine & Dine Join us for late afternoon, light-hearted golf during Summer Nine & Dine mixed foursome golf events on Fridays, July 17 and August 21 at 5:00 pm. These are fun, nine-hole scramble events with dinner following. You are encouraged to bring guests. They will pay only the nine-hole cart fee of $14 and a $5 entry fee. Dinner is additional and optional. Golf Summer Lesson Special Take advantage of the summer lesson special, which gives you five full hours of golf lessons for just $250. These lessons must be used before the end of October. However, they can also be shared with your family or friends, and they can be used for video, shortgame or on-thecourse instruction. We promise you ll be glad you made the commitment to get more enjoyment out of your golf game. Mike Dero Late Afternoon Golf Quail Creek Country Club encourages golf in the late afternoon and early evening during the longer days of summer. While other clubs are closing at 3:00 pm, or requiring that you have carts in by 5:00 pm, we will let you keep our fleet carts out until 8:00 pm. The best part is, if you begin after 4:00 pm, the rate of just $20 for you and/or your guest no matter how many holes you play. This special is only good through September, so take advantage and bring out some guests. Men's Summer Interclub Please make note that the Club will host the Men s Summer Interclub shotgun on Friday, August 21, so there will be no available times in the morning. All men are invited to participate and represent the home club. The cost is $25 for Members plus applicable cart fee. Teams are randomly chosen and the game is a team two best balls of four. 5 WGA 18 Hole News The Summer League is underway and will continue through the summer and into early fall. This League offers the opportunity to play at a variety of local clubs. You must have a handicap index of 32.4 or less to qualify. An entry fee of $50 will be charged to cover golf, lunch and prizes. Dates and scheduled courses are posted in the Women's Locker Room. We hope you are enjoying your summer wherever you are, but it is not too early to mark Opening Day, November 4, on your calendar. Event Chair Rita Kozic promises to deliver a fun-filled day as we kick off our season with Sea You on the Green. Sign up begins October 6. Some great events are in the works for the season. Coming up first on October 23 is the Meet-N- Greet, a complimentary breakfast open to all Lady Niners. The possibilities for fun are endless with their theme, Halloween on the Green. Opening Day will also be a kickoff for the Lady Niners Holiday Charity, Angela s Angels. Anne Genovese will be on hand to talk about this worthy cause. The Lady Niners Handbook is being updated. 6 MGA News Thanks to all of you who participated and supported your Men s Golf Association this season. We had more member participation than any time in the past five years. We look forward to next season and anticipate a few changes in some of the events. For example, it has been suggested that there be a winner for each day of the Kings Classic, in addition to an overall winner based on the two day team score. Details will be announced before the event. There will be some changes in how events are scored. All events which are run by and subsidized by the MGA will be considered tournaments, and the Pro Shop will enter the score from those events for the individuals accordingly. There will be no handicap changes made by the Pro Shop. Handicap changes, if necessary, will be handled by the Golf Committee. Events will be played at full handicap based on the tee played, unless otherwise specified. The MGA Board looks forward to our first event of the season in October. We hope you are enjoying a healthy, happy summer. From the Courts Jon Call Congratulations to our Head Professional, Jose Pastrello, on his recent accomplishments. Jose was just named the USPTA Florida District Professional of the Year. This award recognizes the USPTA Tennis professional who goes above and beyond his job to make a difference in the community. He also received the District of the Year award for all of his efforts as District President. Jose s responsibilities as District President include staying on top of the educational requirements for each and every pro in the district and hosting valuable meetings to inform and educate fellow USPTA tennis professionals on the latest trends in the industry. We are very proud of his accomplishments and happy to have him at Quail Creek. Quail Creek Country Club's Head Tennis Professional, Jose Pastrello (right) with USPTA Florida President, Brad Leu. FROM THE COURTS FOURTH OF JULY ROUND ROBIN The Yanks vs. The Brits! Friday, July 3 9:30 am 11:30 am Tennis Teams will be divided evenly between the Yanks and Brits. Points will be awarded for matches won. The entry fee is $5 per person and includes organized tennis and prizes. Lunch is available (on your own) in the Greenside Grille. Wear your patriotic colors and join the fun! LABOR DAY ROUND ROBIN Saturday, September 5 9:30 am 11:30 am Mixed-up doubles, rotating partners and opponents. 7 Summer at the Fitness Center The Fitness Center is open from 6:00 am until 9:00 pm, Monday through Sunday, throughout the summer. While the rest of the Club is closed on Wednesdays, we are not so come in and exercise. The Staff is here to help you get started and stay fit with evening and early morning hours available. Our office manager, Teri Brodie, will be taking some well-deserved time off, so please or call and leave a message. Schedule a therapeutic massage, a facial, combo package, personal training or Pilates session during the summer when the staff has more time to give you personal attention. Swim Lessons We have private and semiprivate swim lessons available for children and adults this summer. Our knowledgeable instructors will work at your level from beginners to those who want to fine tune their stroke. It could save a life! Staff Trained in C.P.R. and use of the A.E.D. This summer, over 70 Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC) staff members will again review adult, child and infant CPR and the use of the Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). QCCC believes very strongly in this safety training which benefits our Members and our staff. In case of an emergency, please remember your cell phones when you are golfing or you are on the Club premises. In an emergency, call 911 and EMS will alert QCCC, using our three dedicated red phones, that an emergency exists. Our trained staff will immediately bring one of our AEDs to wherever it's needed. We will be able to respond on the golf course more quickly than EMS, and that may make the crucial difference. We hope that we will never need to use the AEDs, but we are happy that we know how to use them. From Fitness, Wellness & Spa Kate Kerwin We presently have eight AEDs at QCCC. Each one is stationed to specifically service a particular Club area: One in the Fitness Center hallway; one in the Tennis Center; one hanging next to the podium in the Greenside Grille; another is hanging on the wall near the wine cooler in the Cypress Room; one is in the Cart Barn to service the golf courses; two are traveling daily on the Rangers carts on the golf course; and our last AED is located in the Golf Course Maintenance office for both the staff as well as quick access for the back side of the Creek and Quail Courses. We envision more than one staff person will always be available to respond to an emergency, and our training this summer will make QCCC safer for both the Members and the staff. What is MELT and can it Help Your Golf Game? MELT is a self-treatment program that uses small balls or rollers to hydrate the connective tissue in your body to help alleviate pain. You can benefit from MELT if you are noticing your golf swing isn t turning as far, that your neck turn has diminished, that your low back has pain while golfing, or it is getting harder to bend over without pain to get the ball out of the cup. MELT is the missing link to staying healthy, youthful, and active for a lifetime. The treatments take about 20 minutes to complete, and they can quickly become part of your daily routine just like brushing your teeth. Kate recently attended a week-long recertification course to learn new techniques for MELT. Please call the office to schedule a session to learn more about helping yourself live pain free. Why Train with a Personal Trainer? Much of what we do in the Fitness Center at QCCC could be described as movement therapy, or healing through movement. Lack of movement may cause pain in many of us, so finding the appropriate exercise is very important. Effective movement therapy is the way to reach your goals while working with an experienced personal trainer. Sessions can be 30 or 60 minutes long, depending on your goals, and tailored to your needs. For more details on our training programs, please call the Fitness Center at We are here to help. Please help yourself to this material to share with others who would enjoy our QCCC lifestyle. We love the opportunity to show off our hospitality. The warm greetings from our staff and our Members to those participating in our reciprocal play has not gone unnoticed. Several have stopped by to inquire about membership opportunities, and Summer has arrived in Southwest Florida. This means Reciprocal time at Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC). QCCC has partnered with over 60 Clubs, and detailed information about each Club can be found on the QCCC Website. To locate the electronic Reciprocal List, log into the Member Website and go to either the My Club, Golf or Dining tab. In the drop-down menu, From Membership Jennifer May I often hear how friendly and helpful everyone is. Thank you! I am happy to announce that during the past 12 months, we welcomed 56 new Golf, Preview Golf, Associate and Social Members. Several of our Preview Golf Members have already converted to Class A Membership and we expect many others will do so over the upcoming months. This speaks volumes about the value of membership here. I am especially thankful to those of you who opened up your golf, tennis and social groups to warmly receive our newest Members. You continue to demonstrate that while most new Members come to our Club because of our WOW... What's On the Web Jenni Caves you will see a tab for Reciprocal Clubs. All of the Clubs with which we reciprocate are listed, along with a link to each club which includes their hours of operation, golf fees, dining options and more. Members can request a tee time up to seven days in advance by contacting the Quail Creek Golf Shop, , between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. However, Golf Shop staff can only call two world-class facilities, they stay because of the friendships they have made. In recent months, we are pleased to see an increase in younger families joining the Club. Our Social and Associate memberships encourage families to enjoy the privileges of being QCCC Members. And our Golf, Tennis and Social programs offer something for all ages. We plan to continue to expand our offerings for this important segment of our QCCC community. If you know of any families looking for a club to call home, I hope you will recommend Quail Creek Country Club. I am happy to welcome them and show them all that our Club has to offer.
