Vice President - Tim Devaney tdev5@yahoo.com Have you ever wondered why some us golfers are married and some have girl friends while others just do without or so they say. Aside from the obvious reasons, there has to be a pretty good bond between golfers and their partners to allow us to play as much as I seem to see everybody at the course. The trade off with girl friends seems easy to me in that you buy your way to the course with dinners, shows, trinkets and the like. The married have all kinds of manipulative measures to secure their participation at the golf course most of which were cultivated a long time ago. This particular expose deals with gentlemen in our club that are single or not actively involved with a significant other. The conclusion must be drawn that their desire to play golf has wedged its way between that relationship, or according to her there never was a relationship, or their mangled personality just destroyed the relationship. Now, I don t know if this is true but I heard that one of our members got up early, quietly dressed, and slipped into the garage. He packed the clubs into the car, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so he pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. He went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. He cuddled up to his girl friends back, and now with a different anticipation, whispered, The weather out there is terrible. His loving girl friend of two years replied, Can you believe my stupid boyfriend is out golfing in that. Anybody you know? Now this next rumor has these names all over it Bales, Parsakian, Ozols, even Schafer in his younger days. The story goes that his girl friend was hinting about what she wanted for her up coming birthday. She said, I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds. He bought her a bathroom scale. The grace with how they play the game is never far from their social tact. And so the circle of life perpetuates itself on the golf course and you see people every week for 4 to 5 hours and wonder that you may not know very much about the guys you play with well now you know a little more. 2

Past President & Rules - Doug Peterson peteart7@aol.com From the Past Prez---In the course of fulfilling the duties of Past President there comes a time when its necessary to inform the membership of the passing of one of our own. Sadly, that time is here again as on Wednesday, March 3 rd, Bill Hamley passed away while playing golf at Royal Vista. He was 93 and played golf actively until the day he died. I don t know if it is possible to call the time and place that we would leave this mortal coil but to have it happen doing what you love, with the people you enjoy, on a beautiful Spring like day well, that might be my call, and that s how it happened with Bill. It s ironic since Bill has been in charge of the Wednesday game for almost as long as I can remember, going back to the early days at Imperial Golf Course when I had summers off from teaching. I looked forward to those Wednesdays when I could learn the game from Bill, John Boeheim, Bob Raley, Bob Ness, Kevin Donahue, Art Oropeza, et al. They made it fun, regardless of the final scores or how badly I played when on their teams. I was fortunate enough to play on Bill s team many times and would marvel at how straight he hit it and how consistent he was. No matter how hard I swung, I couldn t do that and then Bill said don t swing so hard. What a novel idea!!! I haven t necessarily heeded his words over the years but he certainly helped me to hit the ball straighter and less often and for that I am grateful. For those that knew him and enjoyed his company both on and off the course, Bill would be described in many ways with many complimentary words, but I think the word that strikes me the most, as it did with the pastor of his church, was Gentleman. Though fiery and competitive on the course, Bill s gentle nature and pleasant personality will sorely be missed by all who knew him and the members of Royal Vista will find it hard to forget his presence at the weekly skins games, especially the Wednesday game. I m fortunate to have known him, I m glad to have played golf with him, and I m proud to have learned from him for he had a passion and manner that always made golf and life enjoyable we could all be so lucky. And speaking of things Bill found enjoyable, besides hitting it long well, maybe that s a stretch straight, and sometimes too often don t forget to get your entries in for the Spring Fling on April 29 th and 30 th, and the Member/Guest on July 9 th and 10 th. The weather in the desert has been incredible recently Chamber of Commerce days as the locals say, and Royal Vista is rounding into great shape following some cold and wet weather. By the way, as Tony Olearts used to say play em as you find em no more winter rules. Speaking of finding things, if you need help finding a partner for the Member/Guest, I can help as in the past. I m leaving for Alaska July 11 so I won t have a lot of time in the weeks just prior to the tournament so let me know asap. In the mean time, enjoy the game of golf, the gift of life, and all that each has to offer. 4

Editor -Mark Gallant On Wednesday March 3, 2010, I decided to take a day off work and play a little golf. I can t remember the last time I played in the Wednesday game but something told me to go play golf. I went down to Royal Vista to join the Wednesday game. I was paired with Bill Hamley and Dick Rocha. The round started like any other round. Both Bill and Dick always seem to be down the middle. We where having a good time, we talked about their families and how many Kid s, Grand Kid s and Great Grand Kid s they had. I asked Mr. Hamley what he does to keep himself healthy, he said I never smoked and always have an occasional beer Mr. Hamley told me he was once a 11 handicap. He had a nice swing but he was not a good chipper. On the 6th hole I told him that I didn t like the way he chipped. I gave him a chipping lesson and he tried to work on it throughout the round. On hole 12 Mr. Hamley had hit his approach shot in the rough on the left side of the green and had a very difficult downhill chip shot to a fast green. I told him Ok Bill, this is what you do, take your sandwedge and lay it wide open, then take a long lazy swing. He said I don t have a sandwedge, I said here use mine. He took a couple of practice swings then hit a nice little (Phil Mickelson) flap shot and it ended up 5 feet from the hole. He where both very surprised! As we where leaving the 13 hole Mr. Hamley said, Wait a minute, I feel a little weak He took a few deep breaths and said I am Ok. On the 14th tee he seemed ok, he asked me why did you miss that put on the last hole. After we had all putt out on the 14th hole, Mr. Hamley collapsed on the green. We immediately called 911, but it was to late. Mr. Hamley was always known as a very nice man and most of all a gentleman. He always had nothing but positive things to say and was always willing to volunteer his time to the club. I m sure we all looked at him in amazement, 93 years old, living on his own and playing golf 3 times a week. As a fellow golfer he will be missed. Ken Wheeler - Secretary Happy April to you all. Hopefully we will have no April showers. We ve had enough cancelled golf dates this year. The secretary s position doesn t offer that much in the form of a monthly addition to the Birdie. I ve been trying to come up with something that is not only pithy, but can be of service to all. Everytime I mention something to the board they mearly say ok note boy, whatever you say. So I am embarking on a new and revolutionary idea. A classified column. That s right. If you have something for sale or rent that is directly related to golf, just let me know and I ll put it in. For instance, you have a condo on a golf course and would like to let members know that it is for rent. Or perhaps some clubs for sale. Neet huh!!! Maybe not completely revolutinary but something I would like to try out. Just let me know when we are together or send in your ad to kdubb@earthlink.net. Just make sure you subject the ad so that my spam blocker won t send it into space. I ll start this experiment by saying: 5 FOR SALE 2008 Taylor Made Burner Irons. 4 through sand wedge including an approach wedge. Excellent condition. $200 See Ken Wheeler or phone (310) Please join in because the board is going to S#@! when they see this...

Handicap Chairman - Bob Briggs rebriggs@pacbell.net Spring is officially here, so let us hope the major rains are over. That means we can also put the winter rules discussions on the back burner. The loss of Bill Hamley last month was a shock and a sad day for us all. Bill was kind and gentle man who was always upbeat and cheerful. He never made an unkind remark about anyone. We would all do well to learn that lesson from Bill. He was a real asset to our club. We will all miss him. Rules, rules and more rules.. It was one those days. Tom Miles had missed several short putts in the last club tournament. Frustrated, he tapped in his last putt of the day with the grip end of his putter. As a long time friend, I was tempted to look the other way, but then I thought better of it and said, Tom, golf is a simple game, but it does have rules. You have to use the club head when playing golf. Tom, that s going to cost you. Question: Did Tom s using the grip end, tap in cost him any strokes? What, if any, is the penalty? A. No penalty and the ball is holed. B. One stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced and the stroke played properly. C. One stroke penalty and the ball is holed. D. Two stroke penalty and the ball is holed. AND THE ANSWER IS: The answer is D. There is a two-stroke penalty and the ball is holed. Rule 14-1 stipulates that a ball must be struck with the head of the club. Failure to do so results in loss of hole in match play and a two-stroke penalty in stroke play. Since the ball was holed, Tom had completed play of the hole. Bob 6

Tournament Chairman - Dennis Walker dennisroyalvista@yahoo.com Well guys golf is a very humbling game. Saturday I was asked by Vince to fill in on team play at Mountain Meadows. That morning I met my opponent at the first tee and he was a very genuinely nice guy. At the second hole he pulled a half gallon jug of Bloody Mary s from his bag. He offered Bob Mora my partner and I a drink. I said I d take a little (after all I usually play with the Bloody Mary master Ken Wheeler) and he poured me one. It was quite strong so I sipped from it the entire round. Our match went back and forth but on the 15th tee I found myself down 2 holes. I had also noticed that my opponent had a little slur in his voice. We teed off and from the tee the hole is goes down slope pretty steeply. Bob and I stayed to the cart path gingerly working our way down the hill. My opponent was going hell bent for leather across the grass at top speed. About 100 yards out he hit a drainage cutout going across the fairway that launched his clubs out of the cart bag and all probably 10 to 15 feet in the air. He didn t notice. At about 150 yards off the tee he hit a second drainage channel. This time it launched him out of the cart coming to rest on the ground in front of his cart which proceeded to run over his legs. The cart then made a left and headed towards the boundary fence. Bob and I stopped it, then went over to see if he was okay. He was dusting himself off by then limping around pretty bad. When the cart first ran him over I have to admit that one of my thoughts was I may win this one since I was sure he was either dead or severely injured. We played on limp and all he played like a revitalized Tiger Woods closing me out on 16! Golf is a very humbling game.
