1 From the President, Craig Druskins August 15, 2014 Inside this issue: Manager s Report 2 Upcoming Events Treasurer s Notes Pro Shop 3 Tournament & Golf Greens and Grounds Marketing Mah Jongg Tournament 4 5 Social Committee 6 Cards and Mah Jongg 7 Dear Members: The golfing year is winding down and many of us are thinking about our migration south for warmer winter weather. There are still many opportunities to use the golf club this year. Mike Ridley will be on the deck again, the club championship is coming up and the Rider Cup matches still need to be played. Get out and enjoy the Indian River Golf Club. The IRGC Annual meeting is Sunday August 17 at 1:00 PM. This will be an opportunity to meet the new board members and participate in the meeting. We will have an open forum again with a chance for your input to the board with suggestions for improvement and recommendations for change. Plan on attending, and I will see you there. The will be an announcement of a new promotion to increase membership. We still need every member to try to recruit new members to come and enjoy the club. Treasurer s Notes As I stated before, the priorities for 2014 are: maintain and grow our membership, provide a high quality golf course, deliver a quality dining experience and continuously communicate to the membership. I feel we are doing well on all of these goals. So finish the year with a bang and join us at the annual meeting!! Sukey Stump In Memoriam Louis Torrice Net Profit/ (Loss) for the club for June was $32,207, which is $2,759 ahead of the $29,448 budgeted profit. YTD profit is right on budget with a $352 variation. Although June Net Operating Income numbers were closer to budget than previous months, we remain behind budget $30,932 YTD. Again, both golf and restaurant income are behind budget for the month and YTD; and this miss was partly offset by dues and pro shop sales ahead of budget. We should continue to thank Pam and her staff for their excellent cost control. Total Operating Expense was $7,182 ahead of budget for June and $30,580 favorable YTD. This favorable expenditure variation offsets the below-budget income, which results in profit numbers very close to or better than budget. If the Operating Expense was right on budget YTD, the club would have lost over $30,000 through June. As you frequently hear from me, we all have to contend with cost increases that are beyond our control. The club operations are no exception. A couple examples of these are recent food cost increases and the upcoming increase in the minimum wage. As of September 1, 2014, the minimum wage will increase almost 10%, up to $8.14/hour from $7.40/hour. In the face of rising prices, we can t continue to rely on the staff s cost control without sacrificing club operations. This underlines the importance of bringing in new members and everyone utilizing the golf and restaurant as much as possible.
2 From Our Manager, Pam Phipps In spite of the slow start and the cool spring and summer the club is on budget for the year. Merchandise sales have been better than budget and up from last year. Food sales are up from last year as well. The club is at a point where the financials seem to have stabilized, but capital equipment and improvements to the club have been held back the past few years. The board is in the process of prioritizing the list and how it will be paid for. August 23rd and 24th Club Championship August 27th Member s Scramble August 28th Final Ladies Day League August 31st IRGC/Mullet Lake Scramble Upcoming Events Sept. 1 Labor Day No Leagues I really want to thank all the members for joining the club and supporting the club one way or another. I am just amazed at the dedication of the membership; for example, the countless volunteer hours spent to maintain the flower beds and the painting of the clubhouse and the deck. This volunteering has occurred for a long time. I have heard stories about members being on bull dozers to help build the course, helping to build the clubhouse and even building the benches we sit on. Some of you don't use the course very often and continue to support the club. In addition to thanking the members, I want to thank the staff for their hard work. The course has been in excellent shape all year, the restaurant staff and the golf shop staff have been working hard to learn the members names and offer service with a smile. It is amazing what can happen when everyone is working together to make the club successful. Hopefully, we can all work together by inviting our friends and neighbors to join the club. As you will read and hear, the membership and marketing committee has a new campaign "Give the Gift of Golf". The goal for this campaign is twenty five members. Please help us reach our goal. House Committee Report Sept. 2nd Men's 18 Hole Holiday Deviation Sept. 3rd Ladies' Night League Holiday Deviation Sept. 3rd Men's 9 Hole Holiday Deviation Sept. 4th Ladies' Day League Breakfast & Fun Day Sept. 4th Couples Fall League Starts Sept 8th Ladies Night League Scramble & Meeting Sept. 9th Men s Night League Position & Banquet Sept. 10th Men s day League Position & Banquet Sept. 12th 8 AM Board Meeting; Ryder Cup Pairings Dinner Sept. 13th and 14th Ryder Cup Ron Berg I want to begin by thanking all the members who gave me very nice compliments regarding the staining of the decks. However, the real accolades belong to the members who worked one and two days to get it done. If you see Jim Whitmore, Steve Bataran, Chuck Kraegel, Gene Pezon, and Kevin Clarke, give them a pat on the back. An inexpensive solution has been found to the repairs needed on the bi-fold doors to the meeting room. Dave Hill offered to do it, but couldn t until September. Sometime in the next few weeks John Rhadigan will remedy our problems. Finally, the pictures for the dining room wall have been ordered and should be here in the next few weeks. They will display our beautiful course in the best possible way to not only our member but to guests and visitors as well. Thank Terry Foster for painting the front entrance door to the clubhouse. It was decided to paint both sides in the same shade of green. How appropriate as you enter the Greenside Grill. Kim Wilkins has also found a solution to the staining of the chairs in the barroom. He completed one and it looked great. The committee will be working on this for some months, and the bar area should look great next spring. Actually, we have a number of projects to complete when the club slows down in October, so we may be calling for some help. Lastly, and the most exciting thing, is that the board has requested the house committee to develop a plan for the updating of the barroom and sunroom. After 20 years the area could use some renovations. If there is anyone in the club who has some designer knowledge and experience and could help us put this plan together, please contact Ron Berg. He s colorblind and might make an ok committee chair, but we wouldn t want him looking at color charts! 2
3 Wise Words from Westbrook As July ends and August starts, the club looks forward to two marquee events: the Club Championship and the Ryder Cup. The Club Championship names our Annual Club Champions based on gross scores. It is flighted and all golfers are invited to participate. There is also a stableford event as well during the event. A banquet is held at the end on Saturday. During this event, the Ryder Cup teams are selected. The Ryder Cup is a match play event where teams are chosen and one team plays another. The format is the traditional match play events of Four Ball, Four Somes and Singles play. Sign up for both of these events are currently in the pro shop. Before golfers leave for Florida, it s good to go through your checklist. Getting your clubs in order is an im- portant step. The pro shop does regripping and is often a cost effective way of keeping your clubs in working order. It is recommended to regrip your clubs every other year or sooner. Check with JP or Pam in regards to grip inventory or if you need it done. Maybe we need to update our old equipment with a new model. Get your game polished up with a lesson or lesson pack. A mid-summer tune up or short game lesson might help for the club championship or the last few league weeks. Let us know how we can better serve you. Check your shoes, too. The locker room can clean, polish or respike your shoes.this might help you shoes last another summer! I played my first tournament with some members. Jill Whitmore, Ginny Braidwood and Paulette Paschen and I played in the NMPGA Pro-Ladies at Harbor Point GC. We had a respectable showing, and Jill and I both won proximity for closest to the hole. Each summer, I play in several of these and am always looking for a team. Let me know if you are ever interested, and we can compete together. In September, the club begins its Couples Night League on Thursday nights which runs for six weeks from September 4 through October 9 with a shotgun at 4:30pm. Sign up in the pro shop to participate. The pro shop is having a Summer Blues sale, discounting select Sun Mountain golf bags, outerwear, bottoms and tops up to 50% off. Take advantage on extra discounts on the Taylor Made golf equipment in stock. All hats and visors are now $5 off. Use up all those certificates or just pick out a nice gift for an upcoming birthday. Congratulations to our President s Cup champions of 2014: Jill Whitmore defeated Margie Steller 4 and 3 in the finals for the women s division. Mike Vizina outlasted Gary Freismuth 4 and 3 to take the men s division. Good Job to all our finalists! It was a great multi month tournament thanks to the participants staying within the deadlines when scheduling his/her match. Stay posted to the website and calendars for upcoming events like the August Members Night. Yours in Golf, John Paul Westbrook, PGA Head Golf Professional Attention Members: Please be sure to check in with the pro shop before golfing and sign your receipt for charges. Be sure the charges are correct before signing. Hopefully, this will prevent charge errors and make the monthly bills run smoother. Also be sure to sign for charges in the Greenside Grille and look over the items before signing. These errors are much easier to correct if caught right away. Thank you! Amanda Check-in the first! 3
4 Tournament and Golf The 2014 tournament season is in full swing with several champions already crowned and more to come in the next several weeks. The 2 nd annual MIXED CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP was held recently on a wonderful Sunday afternoon. This event is growing in popularity as players enjoy the three different formats used to compile scores. Again this year no divorces were reported as spouses played together attempting to scramble and play alternate shot. Perhaps the dinner and cocktails soothed a few frazzled nerves. Congrats to Muriel and Charlie Lange as the overall winners with Jill and Larry Lutz taking home the low net prize. This year s President s Cup has come down to just one more match. On the ladies side we saw Jill Whitmore shoot the round of her life to defeat Margie Steller in a spirited championship match. Jill had been runner-up a few times, but this was her year to win it all. In the men s bracket the championship match pits Mike Vizina against Gary Freismuth. By the time you read this article the match will have been played and we will report the outcome next month. Aug. 23&24 are the dates for this years Legend s Tournament the Club Championship. Sign up forms are available in the pro shop, from JP or your league president. We hope to have divisions from the white, gold, red and yellow tees and several 9 hole flights. Please consider signing up for this event. Most play is handicapped giving everyone a chance to be a winner. Sunday s play will be followed by an optional dinner. At this dinner champs will be honored, toasted AND this year s RYDER CUP teams will be determined. For this tournament all tee groupings and starting times will be set by our pro, JP Westbrook. JP will Gary Freismuth also set up the course to make this a fun and challenging event. We encourage you to try this tournament this year. It will be an excellent opportunity to test your skills, meet some new members and have some fun with your golf game. If you have any questions see, your pro or any member of the T&G Committee. Keep hitting it straight and see you around our club!!!!
