1 The Ripple November 2017 The President s Message: Jim Crichlow G reetings everyone---- A couple of recent news articles caught my attention, and how hard it is to keep a golf course alive. The first has to do with the Millennial generation. These young adults are delaying doing what most of us old folks did at their age. They aren t purchasing homes, they aren t getting married in their 20 s, rather in their mid-30 s, they aren t having kids until the late 30 s. They don t join organizations/clubs. They are basically all about ME. The other article was in the Porterville Recorder, and had to do with Tulare County income. Tulare County is at the bottom of the list of counties when it comes to income. When it comes to discretionary income to average family in Tulare County has a -$ to spend. So how does a Golf course survive these two things? It is not easy. You have a vast area of property that is basically vacant most of the day. It is imperative that we get players on the course after member play, so Terry and the Board are constantly turning over every possible leaf or rock to get play on the vacant property. Discount rounds, afternoon and aerification specials and more have kept RICC open despite the two paragraphs above. The Nomination Committee has been appointed and will shortly contacting Equity members to run for the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors meets Thursday :00pm in the Board Room. There are many ways to get your point across, and this one is one of my favorites: The famous Lady Astor from New York was a party in London. As the night went on she met Winston Churchill. Churchill had consumed a large amount of alcohol, and the Lady Astor, who was a real snob, said to Winston Mr. Churchill you are quite drunk. To which Winston replied, Yes I am, and you are quite ugly and tomorrow I ll be undisputable sober. Good evening. HAVE A GREAT MONTH

2 Club News: Terry Treece Update #2 Green: As you know our 2nd green was hit very hard by the record summer heat, and caused significant damage. Our plan going forward was to first move off the permanent green and open a temporary green to relieve daily traffic. The green was then verti-cut and over-seeded on two occasions. Moving off this green, allowing it to heal should expedite the improved overall condition. Next, we felt that lack of air & circulation was one of the main causes for the heat damage on this green. To improve airflow we (Fuzzy & I) made the decision to thin and remove most of the Osage Orange trees to the south of the green, improving circulation and keeping this green ultimately cooler. Our hope is to be back to the permanent green by Thanksgiving weekend but cooler nighttime temperatures may prolong the healing process. Thank you for your patience!!! Internet Based Phone Update: Currently we are still running tests to measure internet strength signals preparing to install the new phone system. As I mentioned last month, the annual savings should be around $18,000 and overall call quality will improve. More updates as we move forward. Regards, Terry Treece, PGA River Island CC

3 Restaurant & Golf News: Corey Gill O ctober was busy busy busy! The outside events we host for charity sure do appreciate the support they get from our members. We ve got two more this year: the Our Heroes Dreams Invitational on November 10, and the Knights of Columbus on November 18. We have a new Masters Champion! Congratulations to Ray Soto, who also won the Last Man Standing this year. He shot 133 for both days, tying the low number set by Bob Fields in 2002 and Bill Harbour in Soto also won the Amen Corner flight by an astonishing 9 shots over Pranav Patel, who shot 142. Bruce Carter, Doug Watkins, and Jeff Crocker all shot 150 to tie for third in the flight. Ben Weldon won Low Gross with 149. Past Champion Bill Harbour won the Rae s Creek flight at 136. He beat Doyle Sewell, who finished second, by 7 shots. Bob Nicholson shot even par 144 for third place. Jim Crichlow won the Magnolia Lane flight with 145. Vernon Sue finished second at 151, and Gary Mekeel shot 152 for third place. Coming up in December, the River Cup is the 2-3. You should have received an with the top 24 players. Please respond if you are in that elite group with a yes or no for participation. The last member tournament of the year is the Three Man Scramble, December The Men s Club Annual Dinner on December 7 also serves as the stag dinner for the tournament. This is always a popular tournament, find two players and sign up! One of the three team members may be a guest with an established handicap index.

Thanks to all the participants, Golf Professionals Corey Gill and Kristen Allard and Tournament Chairman Vicki Brown, the two-day stroke play 2017 Club Championship (October 10 and 12) progressed smoothly and was (at times) even fun! Congratulations to all who played and especially to 2017 Club Champion Sayoko Johnson who extended her reign to eight years! Congratulations to Marty McCormick whose low net score of 145 beat Linda Goates and Vicki Brown by two and three strokes, respectively. Linda Peterson(4 th ) and Linda Dixon(5 th ) also took home Target gift card prizes. October 5 Meeting Day President s Cup: The American team of Pat Price, Sayoko Johnson, Vicki Brown, Jan Mekeel, Jayne Denni, Patt Piper and Kathy Slechta scrambled to a 3-stroke victory over the International team. October 19 Medallion Play and Putts: Linda Dixon s low net 65 obliterated the competition! She won by 8 strokes over Pat Price and Sayoko Johnson who tied for second. Linda Peterson and Sayoko Johnson tied for the fewest putts with 31. October 26 Halloween Tourney: The second place team of Betty Smith, Linda Goates and Patt Piper felt great about their low net score of 55 until they learned that the team of Linda Dixon, Jayne Denni and Kathy Slechta had scrambled to a frightful score of 54! October 31 Second Annual Witches Luncheon: The hats and costumes were even more elaborate this year since we didn t play golf and had the morning to prepare. Supreme Witch Alice Christianson served as judge and selected the witches pictured at left for prizes. Thankfulness ~ As we gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us pause to be especially grateful for the members and employees who comprise our River Island community.
