1 Patronize & Participate Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Iowa City Lodge no. 590 Exalted Ruler Matt Zacek 637 Foster Road Iowa City, Iowa (319) Fax (319) Website: april Bulletin 2011 General Manager s Report The course officially opened on Saturday the 19th of March. Superintendent Ned Giles feels the course came through the winter in excellent condition. Once the weather warms up we hope to see you out here. Reminder to all members that your social dues for the 2011/2012 Elk year are now due. If you haven't received a membership card you have not paid your dues or you have not been initiated. By regulation of national and local by-laws you must present a current membership card to enter the Lodge facilities or cast a vote in Lodge deliberations. Also please submit a fee sheet with your choices of activities you wish to purchase this year. We will not assume you will sign up for golf or swim simply because you did last year. Please take time to read the article my Mike Manfull on the locker room project he managed the last couple months. We hope you all can come out and take a look at the wonderful changes in the downstairs facility that was done this winter. Details on activities later in the bulletin should give you plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy your Lodge. Remodel Thanks It is amazing what can be accomplished in a few short weeks with the help of enthusiastic volunteers and skilled tradesmen. The remodel of the two locker rooms took just over a month to complete and would not have been possible without the help and effort of so many people. I want to thank the following companies and individuals for their contributions: General Contractor: Prime Ventures Construction Chris Anderson: Anderson Electric Jeff Maske: Nagle Lumber Jim Mulford: Mulford Plumbing Bill Bednarz: Kelly Heating Josh Mehaffy: Mehaffy Construction Jay Nelson: Green Mountain Painting Jeff Harris: Concrete Central Jason Watts: JW Builders Ernie and Kathy Bachmeier: Bachmeier Interiors Chris Bower: Bower Drywall Rob McComas and Steve Wilson: McComas-Lacina A special thanks to Stephanie Wilson and Mara Goodvin for their help with interior selections and to Larry McConahay for the use of his trailer and the countless hours he spent helping to get rid of debris. A very special thanks goes out to all of the volunteers who helped with the initial demolition and periodic cleaning throughout the project. Thanks to Ned and his crew with helping to dispose of the concrete and rubble from the demolition and thanks to Kevin for helping with the coordination of the work when I couldn't be there. The scope and finish of this project would not have been possible without the generosity, time, skill and labor of all of these folks. The club can be proud of the new spaces that everyone can now enjoy. Remember to thank these folks when you see them and if you are looking for work to be done on your own homes please don't hesitate to support those who have supported your club. Call for Help On April 29 & 30, All Iowa Wheels for the World, will collect manual wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches for developing countries. MidWestOne Banks will serve as collection sites in the Iowa City and Coralville area. For more information visit Thanks for your help Patsy Lawton All Iowa Wheels for the World Chairperson From the Desk of the ER One of my goals this year is to have an article in each monthly newsletter about things that are important and topical for us as Elks. One thing that is important to me this year is to, as they say, get back to the basics. All to often we forget that we are an Elks Lodge that happens to have a pool and a golf course not the other way around. One of the most basic rules in the Elks organization is that each member must be initiated before they get their membership card and full access to the club. In this bulletin you will find there are many of you who have not attended initiation. That ends now. You can come to any of the Monday meetings and we will run through it with you. We have scheduled initiation in May and if we need to we can get a quorum together and run through it in 20 minutes on a Saturday. If you have not been initiated within 6 months of joining you will not be allowed to participate in any club activities including, but not limited to, the pool and golf tournaments. The Elks organization, is as the full name says, The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. We are an organization that was founded on the principles of charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity. The Elks organization has two main pillars under the principle of charity, Youth and Veterans. To that end I hope this year to open up a renewed dialogue with the Iowa City School district that has been lacking over the years. The Elks organization is one of the largest grantors of scholarships in the country yet almost one of that is know in this area. Getting us out and involved in the schools and community ties in with another goal of mine and that is to bring in 100 new members in Being visible and active in the community is the best way for us to bring in new members. If you have ideas on how we can get involved with community activities around the area, please let one of the officers or myself know and we will make it happen. Stay tuned for more articles in the coming months about our Drug Awareness trailer and Fire Safety trailer and how we can use these out in the community. I look forward to a great year as your ER, if you have any comments, concerns, or ideas for the club feel free to contact me at zaceks1@mchsi.com Matt Zacek
