1 Coastal Ski & Outing Club July 2018 THE BEST PLACE ON THE GRAND STRAND O President s Letter By Elena Moglia WOW Looks like summer at the beach has finally arrived. The weather is heating up, maybe too much but so are our activities. We will kick off July with a Swim Party at Dave and Wendy s for Independence Day on Wednesday July 4 th, followed by a great line of events and our monthly meeting at the Myrtle Beach State Park Shelter #B2. Remember to bring your kites as we plan have fun on the beach with a COME FLY YOUR KITE EVENT. Refreshments will be served including gyros (grinders, subs or whatever your heritage calls them ), salads, dessert and water & tea. BYOB in a discreet container as usual. Please mark your calendars and join in on the fun the more the merrier as we have a very fun filled July calendar. The August Rafting trip is full, but the August activities organizers are planning a great schedule for the rest of the summer, so stay tuned! We are also working on a trip Innsbruck for the end of February that will be great for skiers and nonskiers alike. Read on in the newsletter for details and reach out to Faith for more information and schedule for deposits. We are still looking for volunteers to organize activities, so if you are interested please contact Gene Young our VP in charge of Activities. If you have an idea for an event, please pass it along to Gene or any board member. We aim to please and the more variety in activities the more we have fun. Our membership drive is continuing. Thanks to all who have renewed their membership and welcome to our new members. Attached is the application, so just fill it out and either bring it to the July meeting at the Myrtle Beach State Park on July 10 th or mail to our PO Box 8043 Myrtle Beach SC Also, keep spreading the word about our club to entice new members to join in the festivities. 2 COASTAL SKI & OUTING CLUB JULY June was quite a busy month with a variety of activities planned. We started out on June 1 st when 26 club members met at Texas Roadhouse and Grill for a fun dinner. After that some went to see a movie and nine of us went to the Sun & Fun Festival at Plyer Park. We enjoyed music by Too Much Sylvia and some even ended up in the Sun & Fun Jail! On June 7 th on a hot summer day seven played miniature golf and then enjoyed dinner at Oscars. A few members enjoyed a great trip on the Big M casino boat on June 19 th.. Nobody got rich, but it was a great way to get a boat ride for $10! On June 9 th we enjoyed a fantastic performance at the Asher Theatre by James Stephens the Man of a Thousand Voices great music and terrific comedy. Ten members enjoyed Bowling at 710 on June 21 st and several more joined them for dinner after. Bowling skills are improving! The next day, we went to the LaBelle Amie Vineyard to hear American Pie Oldies. Lots of dancing, food, and cold drinks! On June 9 th we also had a well-attended Belmont Stakes party hosted by Jane Edwards and Gene Youtsey. A special White Carnation punch was served and prizes were awarded for best dressed male and female in racetrack costume. The weather was very hot on Sunday, June 24 th but seven brave members enjoyed a bike ride. Some made it the whole way down to down to Huntington Beach and back! After that, we had a great time eating together at Creek Ratz in Murrell s Inlet with dancing and some beautiful views! On June 5 th, five members had a great time at the Luau in Myrtle Beach. Dawn Kennealy was called up on stage to practice her hula dancing..despite a threatening storm, our Monthly Club Meeting was held at the beach on June 12 th. We enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner followed by birthday celebrations and some great information about upcoming events. Another storm postponed our Kayak trip on Jun 14th, but we ll keep trying! On June 27 th 21 members went on a boat tour to Shell Island on June 27 followed by dinner in Murell s Inlet. On June 28 we had dinner at Buoy s Beach Bar & Grill followed by Music on Main with The Entertainers at North Myrtle Beach.
3 The Coastal Ski Club s trip to Innsbruck Austria, February 22 to March 2, 2019 is going forward. Over 25 club members have already expressed interest in this exciting trip. The travel agent has put together a package that includes round trip airfare from Myrtle Beach, ground transportation to the Grauer Baer Hotel, daily breakfast, and five buffet dinners at the Hotel restaurant. The trip cost is $1500 per person double occupancy, and $1750 for single travelers. This is a trip for everyone. For skiers, Innsbruck has twice hosted the Winter Olympics. There are 9 slopes outside of Innsbruck, accessed by a complimentary ski shuttle. Ski rentals are available near the hotel, lift tickets are available in multi day combinations, including a ski 3 days in 6 six day option. For non-skiers or those who want a rest, Innsbruck, is known for its medieval landmarks as well as modern architecture. There are 54 designated attractions (Museums, Historic Buildings, etc) There is an all inclusive visitor card, The Innsbruck Card, that provides access to all attractions (for example; The Svarski Crystal Museum, Ambras Castle, the Hofburg Museum, Etc) and includes shuttle service between them. There are cable cars to provide access to mountaintop restaurants. In addition, a day trip to Salzburg Austria (known for medieval and baroque buildings) is also being planned. Details on deposit and payment schedule, as well as information on trip insurance (including a medical insurance option), will be available in the near future. CRESCENT TRIPS Steamboat - December 1-8, 2018: This is a 7 night ski and race training trip with 6 day lift pass nd 5 days daily lessons available as part of the package. All registrations are online. Early bird is set at 70 spots going on sale June 1st for $1120. Regular price is $1180. The early bird spots sell-out within hours so mark your calendars for June 1st at Midnight (PDT) which is 3 AM EDT. The trip price does not include air or transfers. Crested Butte January 12-19, 2019: Crested Butte is our 50th Anniversary Ski Week January 12-19, Package includes 7 nights either condo at $1040 or hotel suites at $1145, 5 days lift tickets, and other events. Does not include air. Registrations open on June 1st. Granada, Spain - March 2020: Mark your your calendars! This will be a trip with something for everyone! Skiing will be in the Sierra Nevada with 66 miles of groomed trails.you can see Africa from the top of the mountain! However, optional day tours for non skiers will be available to: Seville, Cordoba, Alhambra, Gibralter, and Morocco. includes 5 nights in Granada, 2 nights in Torremolinos on the Costa Del Sol, breakfast daily, transfers between airport, hotels, and cities. Price will include air. Package in is process of being finalized. Details to follow. Cruise from Charleston to Havana, Cuba April 13 18, 2020: Travel with Coastal Ski Club Members to Cuba on the Carnival Sunshine from our local Charleston Port. For this spectacular opportunity we have to prepare in advance to assure space. You can even reserve with a refundable deposit for flexibility or purchase travel insurance if your plans change. Currently we have these cabins types available with our group: all double occupancy rates: Inside: $666 per person Ocean view: $706 to $716 per person Balcony: $861 per person. $150 deposit due with reservation. Our read for June was The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, a highly rated WWII historical novel about 2 sisters in German occupied, war- torn France. Everyone enjoyed the book. Her other interests include crocheting, painting, reading, going to the beach and traveling.
