4 Welcome New Members: Arrowhead Golf Club would like to welcome our new Full Club Members! April Alldritt Michael Banis Ray Brown III Jere Byers Peter Diener Daniel Dolin Rick Elyea Jason Hammonds & Tiffany McClure Keith Heck Richard & Romana Monday Terry Paresi McKinnley Reznicsek Colin Tardif Arnold Villalobos Rich & Angela Viol President s Corner with Jerry Calvin With the start of spring and The Masters, I look forward to longer days and, I hope, a chance to be at The Head more often. We have all survived the cold and rainy days of winter, and now must look forward to April Showers and the aerification of the greens. The Men s Club has a few events coming up in April-May. First, is the Masters Par-3 Tourney and the Masters Championship. Please check the bulletin board for qualifications to the Masters event. We also have a couple of two-man games while the greens heal from plugging in the back half of April. If you haven t pick a partner for the Spring Member-Member in May, start looking as this is one of the feature competitions we hold each year. It is held on a Friday/Saturday with the Calcutta Friday after golf. We had a great Spring Opener in March with the winning Gross Team of Gary Logsdon, Randy Reid, Denny Metzger, and Alberto Torres. We had a three-way tie for first on the Net side so here is the list, Team 1: Doug Hugger, Dan Craven, Jeremy Longstreet, Rocky Tuomi; Team 2: Matt Beiser, Daryl Retzlaff, Mike Heard, Brad Bigelow; Team 3: Bill Schiewe, Bobby Stemmer, Jeff Manning, Mike Looney. Congrats to all the winners! As the Men s Club President, I have found out what the downside of being the POTH (President of The Head) is all about in a very short period. That is having to enforce the rules As a courtesy to all Arrowhead Members, please take the time to replace your divots, sand is secondary on all your shots. I would also like to note that the SUNFLOWER SEED BANDIT is back, please be respectful to all who use the course and not spit your seeds out on the tee boxes and greens. Finally, Arrowhead has provided the membership a new program to improve your overall Golf Performance. For those of you interested, please plan to attend the classes on April 4 th or April 14 th. ~Jerry Calvin, Men s Club President Page 4
5 AWGA Corner with Phyllis Millan April Showers, no way...we've had enough of them in March. The rain was fierce, even on Opening Day, where we had a great turn-out for a yummy breakfast, highlights of the upcoming season, and we got to know our new teaching pro, John Cassidy, a little more. Because the weather didn't cooperate (wind & rain), ten of the ladies ventured over to the Indoor Golf Simulator. We laughed, hit terrible shots, and some good ones too! Alexis won the final challenge, but we all won by at least getting to swing our clubs and play golf despite the weather. If you haven't checked out this new fun way to survive Oregon in the winter; do it you'll have fun and some laughs with your friends. Speaking of fun, Chris has a lot of fun golf games planned for us in April; including a 1,2,3 netrotation and a Nassau. The week of aerification (April 19 th ) we'll do a scramble. Don't forget about the Spring Tournament that will be held May 10 (Chapman) and May 17 (Best Ball). You play in each separately, so, if you can't commit to two weeks in a row, no problem. Start looking for that perfect partner you know that person who makes you laugh. Want to play golf at some great courses besides Arrowhead? Have a great day of golf and friendship at a different course? If you answered YES than look for sign-up information to play in our exchanges: Willamette Valley CC- May 24, Oregon Golf Club- June 27, and Persimmon CC- August 1. We'll host our exchange (here at Arrowhead) on July 26th, and I'm sure Carla has something special planned for us. Some of these events will be scrambles and no minimum handicap required. Don't be afraid to come play, even if you are new to the game. If you are a 25 handicap or less, make sure you look into signing up for Oregon Women's Golf Association (OWGA). It's a great way to play some competitive, but fun, golf. Contact Pearl Herkamp if you have any questions. Arrowhead made a great showing last year (our first year) and even brought home a trophy! Don t miss out on the OW fun! Our snow birds should be coming home soon, but for those of us who must survive the winter here in Oregon, we find other fun things to enjoy. If you look around the course, you may see some very cute golf towels with people's names embroidered on them. If you had "worked" on a golf committee when Linda Ignowski was president, she created these cute towels to thank us. Don't think she did it by hand this woman has "six" different type of sewing machines! Her talent is not new though, a few years ago (in High School) she won the Oregon Make it with Wool contest and went on to the National competition; placing second runner up. Sewing keeps her happy and busy. Soon the weather will be changing and indoor activities will not seem as much fun. I know we'll all be getting plenty of golf and will appreciate that we signed up for the golf stretch program. Don't forget to call in either Tuesday or by 2:00 pm on Wednesday if you want to play at 10:00 on Thursday. See you every Thursday, and Tuesday, and Friday and Sunday and maybe Saturday... ~Phyllis Millan, AWGA President Page 5
6 Around the Greens with Adam Vidourek Spring is finally here and the sun is shining! The grass growing!! The drainage projects on #14 and #17 greens are complete!!!. We are now back to normal play on both holes. We will see extremely good results from this project in the winters to come. Construction has begun on the new Short Game Practice Facility, located between #9 green and #8 tee box, and just off the back side of the putting green. The rough shaping is complete. Drainage will be installed next week, as well as, working on smoothing/contouring the area by removing rocks, tilling, and smoothing again. We will continue these steps until we are satisfied with the grade; at that point we will be ready to move on to the next phase. The next phase is building the base of the green area and smoothing to grade. Then we will lay sod from the extra green below hill on #10, and overseed all other areas. My guess on timeline to completion and ready-for-play is sometime in July. If we can open sooner, we definitely will! I hope everyone will be able to enjoy this area and see the benefit of a lower handicap! Aeration is planned to take place the week of April 16th. If weather doesn t allow us to aerate, then we will push out to earliest time possible. Enjoy your rounds! ~Adam Vidourek, Superintendent The Coach s Corner with John Cassidy I ve often been asked: what s the difference between a proper pre-round warm-up and an actual skill-building practice session? A pre-round warm-up routine should be focused on getting the body and muscles loosened up and ready to go play. This should include at the least some sort of stretching, and in a perfect world, some light cardio as well. Our main goal in our warm-up is to get prepared to go play golf, NOT to work on our swing. Your warm-up should be focused on creating warm muscles, proper rhythm and tempo, an immersion into your routine/target, and a general sense for how your swing and body feel that day. Your warm-up routine should be the same every day you play, down to the amount of time it takes and the number of balls you hit. If you have a good understanding of YOUR swing you might make some minor adjustments during your warm-up, but anything more than a minor adjustment is reserved for an actual practice session. When do we have skill-building practice sessions? After our round or on days we aren t playing competitively. If you would like help establishing a proper pre-round warm-up routine, or ideas on how to create effective skill-building practice sessions, let me know and we can get you going down the right path. ~John Cassidy, Lead Teaching Professional Page 6
