1 VOL. 26, No. 4, July 2014 Southview Scene From the Director of Golf by Phil Anderson The month of June was quite a month as we battled weather issues throughout. We anticipate drier conditons as we head into July! We persevered through a rainy Tapemark Saturday and had another successful Tapemark weekend. Don Berry from Edinburgh USA was crowned our champion, winning with a -16. Our low amateur winner was our very own Scott Fenwickwho finished with a +7. The winning team for the Men's event went to Craig Brischke, Carl Horsch, Johnathan Dolphin & Jim Montalbano with an overall score of -56. Lisa Grimes from Alexandria Golf Course sealed the win for the Women's Professional Event with a -4 finish. Our very own Taylor Drenttel took the Amateur ladies title. Janine Moffa, Ede Rice, Carlotta Gruebele & Sharon Doyle won the team event with a -43. Thank you to all who participated in making the 43rd Tapemark Charity Pro-Am a success! June Results Junior Golf Camp With another school year coming to a close, Southview welcomed 29 Junior Golfers for Junior Golf Camp, June 23rd- 25th. We had a great week and the kids were able to learn fundamentals of the game as well as rules and etiquette. We invite you to view some of the pho tos captured from the week on page 4 of the Scene. 2 2 From the President by Will Steinke As you have read all year, the majority of the content in this column has been focused on our financial results. The Board believes it is extremely important to provide financial information to our Shareholders as we all have a part in making Southview the best golf club in town. I hope you all agree we all play a part in making Southview great. A few items to note prior to covering our financial results: #1 - Membership The Membership Committee and Phil have worked hard this year to bring in new members. Welcome to all the new members, we hope you are enjoying your experience. Currently our total golfing membership is at 284 members which is ahead of the number of members we budgeted for in Please continue to promote Southview to your family and friends. Here are a few key numbers: $12,000: May s improvement in Net Income over budget $44,800: May s improvement in Net Income over May of 2013 $42,000: YTD increase in Net Income over budget $52,000 YTD increase in Net Income over 2013 Lets all continue to do what we can to make Southview the best experience for our members. Will From the Pro by Andrea Kloppman-Heit Even when practice does occur, it is often inefficient. To help your game, use this simple and effective routine to improve your wedge shots. Professional golfers have a good understanding on how to gap clubs, which provides the ability to have more accurate shots. To close the gaps in wedge play, a golfer should have 3-4 wedges % of shots occur between 0 and 100 yards so it is beneficial to have multiple wedges to get the ball as close to the hole as possible and eliminate strokes. In the diagram below, a swing replicates the hands on a clock: 7:30, 9:00 and 10:30. When following these examples, four wedges will result in 12 different shot distances. A shorter back swing and a slightly longer follow through will insure an accelerating motion that will stabilize the club head through the strike at impact. #2 - Capital Improvement Funds Last year we approved a three to five year plan for Capitol Improvement spending. This plan covers Capitol spending in both the club house and the golf course. Items were prioritized and projected completion dates were estimated in this plan. As we near the mid-point of 2014 we have spent approximately $159,000 of the budgeted $171,000 in Capitol Improvement Funds. The remaining $12,000 is accounted for in our long range plan and will be allocated by the end of the year. On to our recent financial results... As it was last year, the month of May was again not the best from a weather perspective. Although May created some challenges due to the weather, we were still able to meet and exceed our budget. I remember the first time I broke 100 I was so excited and I could not wait to tell my golf instructor. As long ago as this day was I still remember his response how was your game from 100 yards and in? The Pelz s method of how to play wedge shots from 100 yards and closer is still applicable today. For the amateur golfer, 60-65% of their total golf shots during a round will be hit from 100 yards and closer. Yet, very little practice time is applied to this part of the game. Ask yourself...how much time do you spend working on your full swing versus chipping? Even when practice does occur, it is often inefficient. To help your game, use this simple and effective routine to improve your wedge shots. Be smart when practicing. Make sure your bag is equipped with the proper number of wedges to support a better game. Utilize the closer targets on the range and start developing your own chart that you can use to drop your score. We have two more Titleist short game clinics coming up. Friday, July 11th and July 25th. The clinic will run. from 8:00-11:00 AM and lunch from 11:00-12:00 PM. The cost is $185 and includes a wedge and lunch. Sign up in the golf shop.

3 From the Grounds by Jeramie Gossman Now that the flying and biting insects are out in full force you will find yourself reaching in your bag for that bottle of bug spray. This photo is of turf that has been damaged following an application of bug spray. This pictured area is on the approach very close to #1 green. There are currently many areas on the golf course that similar damage can be noticed. DEET is deadly. Most bug repellents contain DEET. DEET is an active ingredient in bug spray and it will kill turf. We ask that you please refrain from applying bug spray to your ankles while standing on greens, tees or fairways. Please stand in a parking lot, on a cart path or any hard surface when applying repellant. We have experienced record precipitation and therefore have some saturated soil areas. Please follow all cart stakes and signs and use proper golf cart etiquette when operating golf cars. A Recipe From the Kitchen Southview Favorite Champagne Vinaigrette 1/2 Cup - White Balsamic vinegar 1 - Small Shallot, Minced 1 Tablespoon - Dry Mustard 2 Tablespoons - Sugar 1/4 Cup - Champagne 1 1/4 Cups - Salad Oil 3 Blend together the first five ingredients. Slowly add Oil. Season to taste with Salt & pepper This wonderful dressing is from our Champagne Chicken Salad, featured in our, After Fore & Dinner menus. It would also go well with a fresh berry salad. The abundance of rain this spring has posed real challenges for golf course maintanence and golf play. We appreciate your cooperation when we have asked to remove golf carts from the course in order to protect the turf from damage. Wet soils are more prone to compaction which in turn causes poor water infiltration and gaseous exchange. To help correct this problem we have aerated all of the fairways and cart traffic areas using solid tines. Punching holes into the soil allows oxygen and moisture to penetrate into the root zone. Our goal is to promote root system health as early as possible in the golf season. This will promote healthy turf to help withstand the tough summer months ahead.
