There will be NET and GROSS winners and a Ladies, Mens, Senior, Guest, Professional and Junior divisions. Plan on coming to the course early to pick up your RED SOLO CUP! We are preparing amazing dinners designed to feed 6 to 8 people. It includes a whole roasted turkey, dressing, garlic mashed potatoes & gravy, cranberry chutney, Sweet Potatoes with marshmallow topping, Green Bean Casserole and a pumpkin pie. Contact the Events Department today at Reminder of some changes in Quixote s As we enter the winter months we make some adjustments to better serve you. Starting November 1st, Quixote s will close at 6:00pm on Tuesday evenings. This will last through the end of March. Also November 1st, the soup that we have everyday will be Chili instead of Chicken Tortilla. In response to your requests, we will have the New England Clam Chowder on Fridays and Saturdays. Tunes on the Terrace Thursday, Novmber 3rd, 10th & 17th We will continue the Tunes on the Terrace from 5:00pm to 8:00pm in November. As the weather gets colder we will have the music inside. Each week we will be featuring a different band and a different buffet menu. This is a great way to meet your friends and fellow members and enjoy a fun evening. No reservations are required. 3 from the General Manager Jeff Wilson General Manager Dear Members, I know many of you are concerned over the condition of our course over the last few months. I would like to take this moment to update you on some of the issues we are facing and how we plan to improve the conditions on the course and satisfy our members. Irrigation One issue we are currently facing is irrigation. Over the summer, you may have noticed some dry areas on the course, as well as wet spots. Recently, our irrigation system s independent rotating sprinkler heads have suffered gear failure, as a result of their age. This prevents them from turning fully and watering evenly, leading to the dry spots and wet spots that have appeared over the summer. We are currently in the ongoing process of identifying and replacing the broken sprinkler heads; our system has over 3000 total heads. We will also be looking for heads that have sunk over the last 15 years. These head will be identified and raised back to their proper heights. This process is part of our greater effort to conduct a full irrigation audit to ensure our course remains healthy and high quality into the future. Irrigation failures in the green surrounds have unfortunately been common, and I want to reassure you that we are taking an aggressive approach to amending this situation. We have already begun our over-seeding process in the next couple of weeks as part of this maintenance effort. We will also identify areas in the surrounds that need to be sodded this will be done in the month of November. Finally, we have been experiencing a long term issue with freshwater clams building up in our irrigation valves and pipes. This issue is not a challenge that all courses face, but because of our raw water source, it s an issue that we must continually monitor. Bunkers As a result, the advisory committee, and our Turf Care Staff will be prioritizing the repairs that are most needed and most beneficial to quality of play. In the meantime we have added additional sand to the bunkers that are in acceptable shape to ensure playability while repairs are in progress. Our end goal is to update all our bunkers to a Capillary Concrete style basin, which will allow more effective drainage and playability in all conditions. The Olympic Club recently re-built their bunkers using the same system and we believe this is a lasting and effective choice for our facility. You can find examples of the updated bunkers on the green-side of holes 6 and 7 as well as the left side fairway bunker on hole number 12. Those three bunkers have also received a new sand that we plan on utilizing as we re-build our bunkers. Greens As you may know, the greens were aerified five weeks ago and appear to be healing nicely. I can understand the recent complaints about their speed and smoothness, over the last few months, but the upside is that last six months have been a crucial period of regrowth and healing for root structure and surface of our putting surfaces, which are now at peak health. We all love playing on hard and fast greens, but we have to recognize that the harder and faster a green is, the closer it is to dying. It s the responsibility of the superintendent and turf care crew to find a reasonable balance between performance and sustainable long term health. I am proud to say that Ram is doing a terrific job of nurturing the greens to a point where we can safely drop the mowers down again to provide a faster, smoother putting surface for the members without risking the health of the greens. We expect the greens to be healthy, full and fast for many seasons to come. I am completely committed to providing you with the highest quality playing conditions in the area. I want to reassure you that the condition of the course in no way the result of spending less money on course maintenance. As a result of our commitment to the current and future condition of our facility, we have been increasing the resources available to our course maintenance efforts significantly over the past few months and will continue to do our best work to provide the members and players with an outstanding experience at our club. 7 Robert Delgado Director of Golf from the Director of golf November is here and the end of the year is near. But there are still some great events at the club, the Tolosa Wiine Dinner and the Thanksgiving Dinner. The food a beverage operation is doing a great job with some great member driven events. Let s not forget one of the most anticipated events of the year, The Red Solo Cup Tuff Day, November 19th. This event will have a Member Divisions for Men and Women as well as a Guest Division for Men and Women. The course will be set-up Tuff and the pins in some diabolical locations, and the tees will be all the way back. Please be sure to sign up for this event, it fills up fast and is open to the first 100 players. Just because the weather is not exactly perfect for golf, don t let that keep you away from the course. We want you do come out and enjoy some great winter golf. Also, be sure to take advantage of our staff professionals to keep your game sharp through the winter to ready for It has been a great year and 2017 is going to be even better for the members of Catta Verdera Country Club. 9 Handicap Committee There has been significant progress in achieving fairness and equity in golf events at CVCC in the five years since the inception of the club s handicap committee. Progressing from educating the committee members about the policies and procedures governing the USGA and NCGA handicapping system to extending that knowledge to the club s membership, the committee has tried to fully embrace the two tenets of the USGA s philosophy. The first belief is all golfers try their best on every hole played and the second is the system and its processes are subject to peer review. In order to incorporate peer review, in 2012 the club began random daily audits matching the tee sheet with posted scores on the player s GHIN file. These audits were primarily educational but did give some insight on members who frequently appeared on the lists. Beginning in mid-2013, the committee also began collecting data on members performance in handicap money events sponsored either by the Men s Club or by CVCC. Furthermore, in 2015, the committee began to assess penalty scores for those members whose posting behaviors indicated the educational s were not having a positive effect. Finally, this year the committee began to do random ninety day retrospective audits on players winning money in handicap events using a threshold of 95% posting compliance. Players not meeting the 95% threshold were subject to penalty scores being posted for missing posts. Penalties were only posted after discussions with the player. Overall, the committee is pleased with the high level of posting compliance shown by our members. The committee will continue to emphasize the need for handicap integrity for all holes played by members, just as the Rules of Golf ensures integrity for competitors. 11 Ramiro Sena Course Superintendent Superintendent s Update Thank you to all the members for your great support during the aerification and overseeding. We know these practices are extremely intrusive, but they are the most essential cultural procedures in order to guarantee the turf s health. This is our down time where we can focus and improve some of the trouble areas during the Summer months Areas with poor drainage and lack of moisture holding capacity need the attention. We will be adding irrigation or drainage to these spots. This should greatly improve such trouble spots and allow us to spend more time elsewhere. Also, thank you for all the positive comments about the new bunkers. The staff really appreciate your comments since these projects take all of us and more to pull it off.
